LINLEY, Thomas 1733-1795
London: C. and S. Thompson, 1775. First Edition, first issue. BUC p. 294. RISM L2460. The Duenna, to a libretto by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, was first performed at Covent Garden in London on November 21, 1775. "The music for the opera was primarily the responsibility of the elder Linley, who took suggestions from Sheridan and Sheridan's wife. Most of his own contributions (which amount to about half of the total) are in fact based on traditional tunes and works by other composers, notably the finale to Act 3, 'Come now for jest and smiling', for which he used the melody of Morley's ballett Now is the month of maying, a brilliant choice. Among the items that he allocated to his son Thomas (ii) are a larger number of newly composed pieces, including the overture and the air 'Sharp is the woe'; this is one of the younger Linley's finest songs, scored imaginatively for horns and strings... Only a few of the musical items were published in a vocal score, and none in full score." Gwilym Beechey in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Full 20th-century mid-brown cloth with titling gilt to upper, floral patterned endpapers. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [1] (blank), 2-58 pp. Engraved. Binding slightly worn and rubbed. Minor internal browning, staining and foxing; slightly trimmed; upper outer corner of first blank preliminary leaf torn away.

Gray, Thomas
London: printed by H. HHughs and sold by J. Dodsley, and J. Todd, York, 1775. 4to, pp. [4], 416; 109, [2]; engraved portrait frontispiece (a bit rubbed); contemporary tree calf, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; hinges neatly strengthened, small, neat repairs at the bottom of the spine; all else very good and sound. Armorial 18th century bookplate of Sir John Mordaunt. Johnson thought little of the biography which he considered "fit for the second table, " but this criticism was largely due to political rather than literary tastes. "Mason took great liberties with the letters, considering them less as biographical documents than as literary material to be edited...The book, however, is in other respects, well done" (see DNB). LEFEBURE DE SAINT-ILDEPHONT, Guillaume-René (1744-1809)
Paris,: Michel Lambert,, 1775.. 2 volumes: xix, [i], 640; [iv], 641-1070, [ii] pp. 8vo (13 x 20 cm.). Bound in contemporary polished calf, spine with raised band and gilt decorated, gilt lettered and numbered on green Morocco labels; red edges (an attractive binding with some minor rubbing and wear). ¶ A rare work, being a mixture of quackery and scientific medical bibliography. The first part here in 2nd corrected & enlarged edition was originally published in 1773 as "Methode familière pour guérir les Maladies Vénériennes", and was nothing more than an attempt to promote the use of author's nostrum "chocolat aphrodisiaque & anti-syphilique". The remainder of the text are in First edition. At pp. 55-63 a "life of Astruc". On pp. 759-821 we find the translation of Boehm's "Dissertation sur les differentes méthodes qui ont été employées pour guirir le Mal Vénérien" (no record found of the original Latin edition). The bulk of the book (960 pages) is a most valuable anotated supplement ot the Bibliography of Astruc from 1740(see G-M 5195). Detailed and remarkably correct, with information about many obscure and rare publications. The work is concluded by an index on authors, a chronological table and a table of subjects. No copy in the Bibliotèque Nationale.-- (Small wormhole in the outher margin throughout
