Shakespeare Mr. William
London: Thomas Evans, [1775]. A fine and very early printing of Shakespeare's Poems. A Large Copy. With a charming vignette portrait of Shakespeare on the title-page from an engraving by Alexander Bannerman. Small 8vo, in handsome full chocolate crushed morocco, the spine with gilt chain flat bands creating compartments with central gilt tooled ornaments, one compartment gilt lettered, board edges gilt hatched, in a slipcase of complimentary brown cloth-covered boards with matching morocco tips. viii, 250pp. A fine copy, the text especially clean and fresh, the 20th century binding pristine and as new, the slipcase fine as well. SCARCE AND A VERY ATTRACTIVE EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S POEMS, VERY POSSIBLY A LARGE PAPER COPY. According to Jaggard, "a large paper copy (the only one recorded), measuring 7-1/8 by 4-1/2 in., is in the writer's collection." Our copy measures 7 x 4-1/2 inches and might perhaps qualify as a large-paper copy.) The book is printed in the same style as Capell's 1767-6 issue of the Works, and probably intended to be supplementary to it. The arrangement follows that of the 1640 edition, but in this case the index now names every poem. Jaggard speculates that the editor might have been E. Capell. Shakespeare's first published works were poems, starting with Venus and Adonis in 1593. A tragic-comedy of Venus, her unrequited love for Adonis, and Adonis's tragic death while hunting a boar. In the Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare's second published work, the rape of a Roman noblewoman leads to suicide and the downfall of the Tarquin kings … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARBOSA, Domingos Caldas].
Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1775.. FIRST EDITION. 4°, splendid contemporary Portuguese binding of crimson sheep (light wear at corners, head and foot of spine; short splits in joints near head of spine), spine richly gilt with raised bands in six compartments, richly gilt roll-tooled border on each cover, edges of covers gilt tooled, all text-block edges gilt. Woodcut vignette and initial. Occasional slight marginal soiling. Overall in fine condition. Bookplates of Victor Avila-Perez and Fernando Alves Barata. 123 pp., (1, 1 blank ll.). *** FIRST EDITION. "A very important book, and very rare indeed" (Borba de Moraes), containing many poems (all unsigned) written in 1775 in honor of the dedication of the statue of D. José I in Lisbon's Praça do Comércio. These are preceded by a description of the dedication ceremonies (pp. 3-74). Borba de Moraes mentions a variant in which the pagination is not continuous throughout the volume. Five of the odes and six sonnets are generally acknowledged to be the work of Domingos Caldas Barbosa, one of the finest Brazilian poets of the colonial period. These poems also appeared (again unsigned) in the undated, 27-page Collecção de poesias feitas na feliz inauguração da Estatua Equestre, which is itself a rare work. Of these 11 poems Borba knew of no later reprints, separately or in anthologies. Whether the Narração or the Collecção came first is not clear: the type is set in very similar style in both, but there are variations in wording, and the order in which the poems appear differs considerably. Given the thematic structure … [Click Below for Full Description]

1775. Antique print, titled: 'Le Medecin Clair-Voyant', ('The clairvoyant / clear seeing doctor') Scene in a medical laboratory, with various instruments and apparatus strewn about. There are numerous bottles on a table, an open book in the foreground, and a fish hanging from the ceiling. On the left an assistant mixes medicine with a mortar and pestle. At the centre of the scene is seated an old bearded physician (who is supposedly clairvoyant) - he points at the heart of a young female patient who stands in front of him. Etching/engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This original antique master print was published by Helman in France in 1775. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: Made by Helman after Le Prince. Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-1806/1809), was a French draughtsman, engraver and printseller. He was born in Lille in 1743 where he received his early artistic training. His death date is uncertain. He died in Paris in either 1806 or in 1809. In Paris he studied with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783), a draughtsman, engraver and etcher, and was one of his finest pupils. Helman was known especially for his engravings of genre scenes.Jean Baptist Le Prince (1734-1781) came from Metz and studied with Boucher in Paris. He stayed in St. Ptersburg between 1758 and 1763. After returning to France he etched many Russian … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOLINGBROKE, HENRY ST. JOHN, 1st VISCOUNT.
London: Printed for T.Davies, Bookseller to the Royal Academy. 8vo. 5.25 x 8.25 inches. xxxvi + 243 pp. [4] A8, a8, B-Q8, R2. Illustrated with one plate, engraving of author, serving as frontispiece. Contemporary calf; spine divided into compartments by raised bands and gilt rules with red morocco label, gilt. Extremities worn but overall a fine copy. Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751) played a prominent role in English politics in the turbulent period of the early eighteenth century, which saw the end of the Stuart line and the accession of the House of Hanover. Mercurial in temperament, he was a man of great learning and a notable orator, suffering a 'lifelong conflict: a struggle between his reason and his passions'. A landowning Tory who accepted the settlement of 1688, he held high office as Secretary at War (supporting Marlborough's campaigns) and later as Secretary of State, but fell out of favour after the death of Queen Anne in 1714 and fled to France to join James Stewart, the Old Pretender. He abandoned the Jacobite cause following the failure of 1715 and did not return to England for another ten years, after he had received a full legal pardon. These three writings of the 1730s are a product of his continued opposition to the Whig ministry dominated by Walpole and are also based on his study of history and philosophy in exile. This edition reprints three of Bolingbroke's works. He addressed his 'Letter on the Spirit of Patriotism' to Lord Cornbury in 1736 as a plea to all honest politicians to abandon their Whig or Tory principles and unite aga … [Click Below for Full Description]
