John Hancock
1775. Seeking to foster good relations with the Native Americans sympathetic to the Revolution, Hancock and Congress allow safe passage home for the “Indian Sachems & warriors…who are in friendship with the people of the United States of America" Once the American Revolution broke out in 1775, Congress recognized the importance of either building alliances with Native American tribes, or at least obtaining their neutrality. After all, the Indians had men, and arms, and were situated in key areas of conflict between the British and the rebellious colonists. As early as May 1775, Stockbridge Indians formed a company of Minutemen to support the colonists. Congress then created three different departments of Indian Affairs (North, Middle and South), made an appropriation of $17,000 for rum and gifts to entice them, and on July 17, 1775, issued a proclamation explaining the war, and Congress’s disposition “towards you our Indian brothers of the Six Nations and their allies”. It called on the Indians for peace and neutrality: “Brothers and friends!...This is a family quarrel between us and Old England. You Indians are not concerned in it…Brothers! we live upon the same ground with you. The same island is our common…We have said we wish you Indians may continue in peace with one another, and with us the white people. Let us both be cautious in our behavior towards each other at this critical state of affairs. This island now trembles, the wind whistles from almost every quarter- let us fortify our minds and shut our ears against false rumors-let us be cautious w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cooke, William
London: Printed for G. Kearsley…and G. Robinson… 1775 First edition. Half calf over marbled boards, rebacked to style, gilt brown morocco spine label. Marbled endpapers and edges. G1 closely cropped at fore-margin, a little light foxing. Overall a very good, clean copy. William Cooke (1757-1832) was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He studied law and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1777 and called to the Bar in 1782. He spent most of his adult life practising bankruptcy law, and he published a book on that subject in 1785. Cooke was also intensely interested in the theatre, and he wrote the present work when he was only eighteen. It is heavily based on Aristotle's Poetics. "Cooke feels that the theatre has been usurped by dictatorial modern dramatics and false taste, and he wants to restore its respectable character, to make it a 'public school of virtue, and of manners'…Cooke's work represents a useful codification of Aristotelian aesthetics filtered through a mind to whom experimentation and doubt seem to be complete strangers" (John Valdimir Price, writing in the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers).

CHORIER (Nicolas)
Heavily restored but still wonderful and noble example! Please read description carefully!Map has been expertly laid down onto quality heavy backing paper, the whole job patiently and expertly done. As good a job as likely could have been done with the map as it survived when an earlier owner took it to be preserved. Noble and excellent restoration job, not perfect looking, the map had serious damp staining and paper loss along fold-lines prior to preservation. Still well worthy of ownership in a collection or for display. Fascinating details abound for this era, the text is fascinating, dated discoveries noted, rhumb lines, historical discussions within the interior regions, etc. All sorts of notations and observations about the landscape, tribes, discoveries of, unknown coastlines, supposed routes of travel from Spansih maps, etc. 18th century country maps in multi-sheet wall-size format like found here are rarely encountered for under $1000 when clean and in excellent condition. Marra, John]
London. xiii,[1],328pp. plus folding map and five plates. With an additional folding map, "Part of the Tropical Discoveries of the Resolution Sloop Captain J. Cook in 1774." Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, gilt morocco label. Front hinge weakening, light shelf wear. Bookplate on front free endpaper. Small worm holes in lower margin of second half of leaves, not affecting text. Very good. The earliest published complete account of Cook's second voyage, issued at least eighteen months prior to the official version. The second voyage included the first crossing of the Antarctic circle, making Marra's narrative the earliest firsthand account of the Antarctic, and the engraved plates are the first depictions of that region. Due to the strict regulations against private publications, the work was published anonymously, but the identity of the author did not remain a mystery for long. "Correspondence between Cook and the Admiralty shows that the author was John Marra, one of the gunners' mates in the Resolution. He was an Irishman whom Cook had picked up at Batavia during the first voyage. He made an abortive attempt to desert at Tahiti on 14 May 1774, an escapade of which Cook took so lenient a view that he says - 'I know not if he might have obtained my consent, if he had applied for it in proper time.' This did not, however, as Marra states at p. 241, prevent his being put in irons." - Holmes.
