Bryant, Jacob. Blake, William.
London: T. Payne, 1775/1776. 3 vols, 4to, xx, 516; [2], vi, 535; viii, 602 pp, with 31 engravings on the 30 listed plates. A very good and attractive set in clean condition, bound in original calf with gilt decorated rules to covers, and gilt decoration to spine panels, with six compartments and red and black labels. Vols I and II second edition (1775), and Vol III 1st edition (1796). The three maps are lacking. All other illustrations are present in good condition but including usual offsetting and a few showing minor mottling and browning. Plate XI, stated in the List of Plates to be a Bartolozzi engraved plate designed by Cypriani from an original onyx Camaio by the Greek artist Tryphon is the correct plate, although in fact it bears no plate No. and the imprint " G. B. Cipriani Del, I.K. Sherwin Sculp.". Although Bartolozzi normally signs his studio's plates, J. K. Sherwin was an apprentice of Bartolozzi's, and presumably was allowed to sign his engraving in this instance. The plate's design matches the of "The Marriage of Eros and Psyche" from Tryphon's Camaio in the Duke of Marlborough's Collection (see e.g Wikipaedia: "The Marlborough Gem"). Bentley, BB, 439, p537.

Antonio MINASI
Napoli, 1775. Opera rara e ricercata. Copper engraving, signed by Bernardino Rollers for drawing and by Mariano Bovi for the text. It is one of the most impressive iconographies of Scilla, with the top of the castle that covers the town. The plate is populated with characters, including Minasi himself and the designers of that work. In stormy waters, even a British ship attempts to "schivare gli scolgi di qua e di là di Scilla, pieni di morte nera". Minasi introduces a new technique: the iconography is matched with a legend to the margin of the press, which is a sort of "synthesis" of the investigations conducted by Antonio Minasi. Very good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, perfect condition. Rare … [Click Below for Full Description]

She came to power following a coup d'état when her husband, Peter III, was assassinated. Russia was revitalised under her reign, growing larger and stronger than ever and becoming recognised as one of the great powers of Europe... She enthusiastically supported the ideals of The Enlightenment, thus earning the status of an enlightened despot. As a patron of the arts she presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment, a period when the Smolny Institute, the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe, was established... At the instigation of her factotum, Ivan Betskoy, she wrote a manual for the education of young children, drawing from the ideas of John Locke, and founded (1764) the famous Smolny Institute, which admitted young girls of the nobility."Betskoi, who had worked with Diderot was Catherine's chief advisor fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAHLBERG, Alexander Magnus.
Lund, 1775. 8:o. 110 s. Rudolf Antoni 1911.

Italy, 1775. Manuscript on paper, Italian Hebrew script. 28 leaves, Hebrew. 12mo (4 ½ x 2 7/8 in.). Title within intricately decorated floriated and scrolled border. A few leaves loose. Old sheep backed paper boards, worn, lacking lower portion of spine. Half morocco case. This delicate and rare manuscript, prepared exclusively for women includes prayers for healthy and righteous children, a comfortable livelihood, the Mikveh, pregnancy, candle lightening, and the separation of Challah. This tiny book is a scarce survival from a period when women were exempt from the obligation to recite the daily prayers. Thus it provides an illuminating practical perspective on the special realm of women's spirituality. This manuscript prayer book is a fine example of the scribal arts employed by the Jewish community in creating sacred books and ritual objects.

Shakespeare Mr William
London: Thomas Evans, [1775]. A fine and very early printing of Shakespeare's Poems. A Large Copy. With a charming vignette portrait of Shakespeare on the title-page from an engraving by Alexander Bannerman. Small 8vo, in handsome full chocolate crushed morocco, the spine with gilt chain flat bands creating compartments with central gilt tooled ornaments, one compartment gilt lettered, board edges gilt hatched, in a slipcase of complimentary brown cloth-covered boards with matching morocco tips. viii, 250pp. A fine copy, the text especially clean and fresh, the 20th century binding pristine and as new, the slipcase fine as well. SCARCE AND A VERY ATTRACTIVE EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S POEMS, VERY POSSIBLY A LARGE PAPER COPY. According to Jaggard, "a large paper copy (the only one recorded), measuring 7-1/8 by 4-1/2 in., is in the writer's collection." Our copy measures 7 x 4-1/2 inches and might perhaps qualify as a large-paper copy.) The book is printed in the same style as Capell's 1767-6 issue of the Works, and probably intended to be supplementary to it. The arrangement follows that of the 1640 edition, but in this case the index now names every poem. Jaggard speculates that the editor might have been E. Capell. Shakespeare's first published works were poems, starting with Venus and Adonis in 1593. A tragic-comedy of Venus, her unrequited love for Adonis, and Adonis's tragic death while hunting a boar. In the Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare's second published work, the rape of a Roman noblewoman leads to suicide and the downfall of the Tarquin kings of Rome. COOK, James (1728-1779); Michael LANE; and Joseph GILBERT - Thomas JEFFERYS, engraver (1719-1771)
London: "Printed for Robt. Sayer & Jno. Bennett", 1775. Engraved map. A classic chart published by Jefferys depicting all of Newfoundland, after the monumental surveys of Cook, Lane and Gilbert. This fine chart of Newfoundland, the Gulf of St. Laurence and part of the coast of Labrador was published in the first part of the North American Pilot , the most thorough and detailed mapping of the Canadian territory ceded to Great Britain at the end of the French and Indian war. Following the war, surveys of the region were immediately ordered, as the waterways were deemed of vital economic importance to the inland fur trade. Among those selected for the task was James Cook. "On 19 April 1763 James Cook, Master R.N.. was ordered by the Admiralty to proceed to Newfoundland 'in order to your taking a survey of the Parts of the Coasts and Harbours of that Island'" (Tooley & Skelton, p.177). His appointment would have been based, in no small part, on the glowing endorsement of his commanding officer, who had written to the Admiralty in December 1762 "that from my experience of Mr. Cook's genius and capacity, I think him well fitted for the work he has undertaken, and for greater undertakings of the same kind." Cook started by surveying the northwest stretch of coastline in 1763 and 1764, then in 1765 and 1766 the south coast between Cape Ray and the Burin Peninsula, and in 1767 the west coast. Cook's work in the region allowed him to master the art of practical surveying and navigation, bringing his name to the attention of the Admiralty and the Royal Society at a crucial moment in h … [Click Below for Full Description]

France: , c. 1775. France, c. 1775. Hardcover. Very Good. Manuscript on paper in French. Written in brown ink in a neat script with a calligraphic title and headings in clear majuscules. Once part of the dictionary collection of Thomas Malin Rodgers, Jr. Descriptions of homonyms were published in books on French grammar since the 17th-century. The issue of disambiguation in the field of semantics, or the so-called “qualified ambivalences,” were appointed within this body of knowledge and refined over several years of lexicology study. The first dictionary of homonyms of the French language was the Dictionnaire des mots homonymes de la langue françoise (1775) by Pierre Thomas Nicolas Hurtaut and published in Paris. By the title of this manuscript we can surmise that this manuscript quotes a number of key examples from his publication. This handwritten exercise and the resulting grammar book would have been destined for students in secondary education who at the time were learning the semantics of speech … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sheridan, Richard Brinsley (libretto) & Thomas Linley, Sr (music)
C. and S. Thompson, London. First edition. Engraved title-page, engraved table of songs, 57 pp. engraved music. [4], 58 pp. Oblong 4to. Rare first edition of the score of Sheridan's The Duenna. Following the success of The Rivals, Sheridan engaged the help of his father-in-law, Thomas Linley, Sr, to score the libretto to his next major project, a three-act burlesque opera set in Seville and based loosely on the Spanish honor drama. The score is a mix of original compositions and melodies gathered from Italian opera and Scottish folk ballads (these melodies were harmonized by Linley's son, Thomas Linley, Jr). The Duenna premiered at Covent Garden on 21 November 1775 and was an immediate success, running for 75 shows in its first season. It was frequently revived through the 19th century, becoming one of the most successful English operas of its time. Byron praised it as "the best opera ever written." The score is printed here in reduced form for voice and accompaniment; no full printed score of the opera exists. Slip-song printings of the text of individual songs were issued in 1775, along with a gathering of the libretto text under the title Songs, Duets, & Trios. The libretto and dialogue were pirated in a Dublin edition in 1777 under the title The Governess and again in 1785 as The Duenna; the first authorized edition was finally published in 1794. In 1940 Prokofiev rescored the libretto as Betrothal in a Monastery.Rare: ABPC records no copies at auction, and ESTC locates 8 copies (4 at the Bodleian). Poggi, Mauro
(No imprint, but Firenze 1775). One of the handsomest of all engraved alphabet volumes, providing on each plate an elegant decorative representation of a letter of the alphabet, customarily embodying small figures of putti, satyrs, fish, cats, dogs or birds, together with trails of fruits and flowers. The alphabet, complete thus, comprises images for the letters A-H, K-V, X-Z, with one further image doing duty for the letters I and J (not thought of as separate letters in the Italian alphabet), and no image for the letter W (not part of the Italian alphabet). The image for the letter U, not normally thought of in the Italian alphabet as a separate letter from V, has more the appearance of an elaborate version of the letter T.The book was a joint undertaking by two Florentine writing masters, Mauro Poggi, responsible for the alphabet designs themselves, and Andrea Bimbi, who drew out the designs in ink for the engraver (Bimbi is not credited on the volume?s title leaf, but is credited on each of the plates). No date for the publication is indicated on the title leaf or elsewhere, which has led to some confusion in the bibliographical literature and to the volume frequently being dated c.1730, but advertisements in the Gazzetta Toscana, a contemporary periodical, make it clear that the first two plates were issued at the beginning of July 1775, the rest doubtless following soon afterwards. The present copy carries the engraved armorial bookplate of ?John Adam, Esquire?, who can be identified from the heraldry as a member of the Adam family of Blair Adam, Kinross-shire, and th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antonio MINASI (Scilla 1736 - Malta 1806)
Opera rara e ricercata." "Copper engraving, signed by Bernardino Rollers for drawing and by Mariano Bovi for the text. It is one of the most impressive iconographies of Scilla, with the top of the castle that covers the town. The plate is populated with characters, including Minasi himself and the designers of that work. In stormy waters, even a British ship attempts to ""schivare gli scolgi di qua e di là di Scilla, pieni di morte nera"". Minasi introduces a new technique: the iconography is matched with a legend to the margin of the press, which is a sort of ""synthesis"" of the investigations conducted by Antonio Minasi. Very good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, perfect condition. … [Click Below for Full Description]
