Antonio MINASI (Scilla 1736 - Malta 1806)
Opera rara e ricercata." "Copper engraving, signed by Bernardino Rollers for drawing and by Mariano Bovi for the text. It is one of the most impressive iconographies of Scilla, with the top of the castle that covers the town. The plate is populated with characters, including Minasi himself and the designers of that work. In stormy waters, even a British ship attempts to ""schivare gli scolgi di qua e di là di Scilla, pieni di morte nera"". Minasi introduces a new technique: the iconography is matched with a legend to the margin of the press, which is a sort of ""synthesis"" of the investigations conducted by Antonio Minasi. Very good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, perfect condition. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The famous account of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-67) to the Middle East, Egypt, Persia and India, the first scientific expedition to this area. Niebuhr's "work on Arabia was the first European attempt at a complete account of Arabia, its people and their way of life. He amassed a vast quantity of factual information which he relates in a simple unrhetorical fashion, distinguishing clearly between things observed personally and things learned from others. The expedition, which lasted six years, was sponsored by the Danish king, and included the brilliant Swedish scientist, Peter Forsskal, who died while in Yemen" (Cat. Sotheby's, 13 Oct 98, lot 1010). Of the five scientists, Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. His map of the Yemen, the first exact map of the area ever, remained the standard for the next 200 years. - Old stamps erased from title pages (leaving insignificant waterstain), otherwise a perfect set in immaculate original French bindings.
Bel exemplaire. DSB, X, p. 145. Shakespeare Mr. William
Thomas Evans, 1775. A fine and very early printing of Shakespeare's Poems. A Large Copy. With a charming vignette portrait of Shakespeare on the title-page from an engraving by Alexander Bannerman. Small 8vo, in handsome full chocolate crushed morocco, the spine with gilt chain flat bands creating compartments with central gilt tooled ornaments, one compartment gilt lettered, board edges gilt hatched, in a slipcase of complimentary brown cloth-covered boards with matching morocco tips. viii, 250pp. A fine copy, the text especially clean and fresh, the 20th century binding pristine and as new, the slipcase fine as well. SCARCE AND A VERY ATTRACTIVE EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S POEMS, VERY POSSIBLY A LARGE PAPER COPY. According to Jaggard, "a large paper copy (the only one recorded), measuring 7-1/8 by 4-1/2 in., is in the writer's collection." Our copy measures 7 x 4-1/2 inches and might perhaps qualify as a large-paper copy.) The book is printed in the same style as Capell's 1767-6 issue of the Works, and probably intended to be supplementary to it. The arrangement follows that of the 1640 edition, but in this case the index now names every poem. Jaggard speculates that the editor might have been E. Capell. Shakespeare's first published works were poems, starting with Venus and Adonis in 1593. A tragic-comedy of Venus, her unrequited love for Adonis, and Adonis's tragic death while hunting a boar. In the Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare's second published work, the rape of a Roman noblewoman leads to suicide and the downfall of the Tarquin kings of Rome. Artist: Bonne Rigobert ca ; issued in: Paris; date: ca1775. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 23 x 34; - description: Map shows the northpart of Soth America with Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, French Guyana and Columbia; - vita of the artist: Rigobert Bonne (1727?1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne?s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

SCRAP ALBUM]. VISSCHER, J. (compiler or recipient).
, . . Piet J. Buijnsters, "Het Nederlandse 'scrapbook' 1775-1900", in: Antiek XXXI, pp. 50-58, at p. 52 ; WorldCat (2 albums of Engelbrecht's "Aufschneidebilder",); cf. B.M. Stafford & F. Terpak, Devices of wonder, p. 336. A carefully and neatly assembled scrap album containing about 330 coloured, engraved images, each carefully cut out of a print. The images show people (including costume figures, caricatures and oriental figures), boats and ships, flowers, architectural views (including garden views, fountains and sculptures), theatre prints, birds, insects, Aesop illustrations and other items. They include a large image of a man on a ladder picking fruit from a tree, and a whaling scene with a man harpooning a spouting whale. The heart-shaped label with the name J. Visscher and date 28 January 1777, suggests that the album was assembled for Visscher's betrothal or marriage on that date. Buijnsters notes that 18th-century scrapbooks such as the present are very rare. The compilation of a scrapbook became a popular pastime, especially for young ladies, in the 19th century.Nearly all of the clippings come from Engelbrecht in Augsburg and Johann Christoph Schmidhammer in Nürnberg. Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) was an Augsburg engraver and print publisher. In 1719, 1729 and 1739 he received an imperial privilege for "illuminierte Lackier- und Ausschneidebilder" (coloured varnished images and cut-out images). These were intended to be cut out for constructing peep shows or miniature theatres as well as for pasting in scrap albums. Shakespeare Mr. William
London: Thomas Evans, [1775]. According to Jaggard, "a large paper copy (the only one recorded), measuring 7-1/8 by 4-1/2 in., is in the writer's collection." The arrangement follows that of the 1640 edition, but in this case the index now names every poem. Jaggard speculates that the editor might have been E. Capell. Shakespeare's first published works were poems, starting with Venus and Adonis in 1593. A tragic-comedy of Venus, her unrequited love for Adonis, and Adonis's tragic death while hunting a boar. In the Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare's second published work, the rape of a Roman noblewoman leads to suicide and the downfall of the Tarquin kings … [Click Below for Full Description]
