La Fontaine, Jean de
Paris: chez l'auteur, 1765-1775. Fessard, Étienne. First Fessard edition, first issue. 6 engraved title pages, frontispiece volume 1, 243 engraved plates, 243 vignette headpieces and 226 tailpieces engraved by Étienne Fessard after Monnet, Loutherbourg, Bardin, Bidault, Caresme, Desrais, Kobell, Meyer and others. LXXI, [1], 100; VI, 102; IV, 95; [vi], 134; [iv], 103; [iv], 115 pp. (Engraved titles vols 2-6 included in pagination.) Text engraved by Montulay. 6 vols. 8vo. Fine, fully engraved edition of La Fontaine. First edition, first issue of one of the most elaborate 18th century editions of the celebrated fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695). The engraver and publisher Fessard hoped to rival the edition of Oudry of the previous decade, and he in fact surpassed it in the sheer number of engraved illustrations; numbering over 700 in all, these comprise full page plates as well as vignettes at the beginning and end of each fable. The illustrations after the work of Charles Monnet, which dominate the first three volumes, are especially strong, as are those after Loutherbourg. The engraved text by Montulay together with the illustrations create an "ensemble ... as harmonious as it is elegant" (Ray). A clean copy, with wide margins and in a handsome binding. Cohen-de Ricci 551-552; Ray 61 (2nd issue). Provenance: Tho[mas] Coulthard (inkstamp with date 1796 at head of each title page); Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park (bookplates); John Charles Bigham (armorial bookplates); Peter A. Wick (bookplates). Samuel Auguste Andre David Tissot
Neuchatel: Grasset, 1775. Quatrieme ed. considerablement a. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf. Edge wear to cover, scuffed /wormed spine corners. Gilt-lettered spine-label. Good binding. Marble end pages. All edges red. Quatrieme ed. considerablement augmentee. XXI, [3] 264 p. Blake, page 453; Rose 3355 (1765 edition). "The Swiss physician Tissot published in 1760 the first edition in French of L'Onanisme, a book which dealt with the diseases caused by masturbation and had a deep and lasting influence. For the first time the problem of masturbation was tackled from a strictly medical angle. Tissot used observation and logical reasoning, and rejected acts of faith. However, behind this fierce rationalism a religious morality was concealed, which was never explicitly expressed but could be guessed through some expressions, in particular through the idea of 'nature'. The latter concept related back to the physical laws, to the moral laws and to the religious laws at the same time. If Tissot's medical discourse had more influence than the preceding religious and moral discourses, it is because of the rationality of its line of argument, which could lead to a real internalization of the message by the reader. Letters to Tissot show indeed that sick people did not see the interdiction of masturbation as coming from an external authority, but as coming from themselves. The power relationship was not any more between two persons, but between the reason and desires of a single individual." P. Singy; Gesnerus. 2000;57(1-2):27-41.

This scarce and unusual twin hemisphere map is presented on a polar projection. The approximate position of the northern magnetic pole, indicated by a large shaded area, is located just north of the Arctic Circle. The variations in terrestrial magnetism at different points on the earth's surface are indicated throughout the map. The boldly engraved map shows only the continental outlines with few country and place names. Alaska is in a rudimentary shape, the southern coast of Australia is still unknown and Tasmania is thought to be connected to the mainland. The chart reflects the latest discoveries with evidence of Capt. Cook's Pacific surveys, La Perouse's last voyage to the Pacific in 1775, and also the work of Jean-Charles Borda who is credited with the first observations on the variations in terrestrial magnetism. The map is sometimes attributed to La Perouse, but was published in the scarce mineralogy section of Buffon's Historie Naturelle. Original Etching/engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This original map originates from George Louis Leclerc Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle' (in the scarse mineralogy section). It was published in Paris in 1780.Artists and Engravers: Cartographer: Jean-Francois de Galaup de La Perouse (1741-c.1788) entered the Navy at the age of fifteen and became an important French navigator, whose maps and charts are clear and to the point. Trenck, Friedrich Freiherr von der.
Nur 1. Band (von 2). (16), 336 SS. (Dabei:) Gedanken eines Deutschen am Namenstage unsers Reichs Oberhaupts den 19. Merz 1775. 8 SS. (Dabei:) Politische Anmerkungen über die Zeitungen und Vorfälle Europens für das Jahr 1775. 112 SS. Loser Vorderdeckel einer zeitgenöss. Interimsbroschur. 8vo. Erste Ausgabe. AUBLET, F.
- Londres/ Paris, P.F. Didot jeune, 1775. 4 volumes (2 text volumes & 2 volumes of plates). 4to (253 x 194mm). pp. (4), 32, 1-621; (3), 622-976, 52, 160 with engraved frontispiece and 392 fine engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf (a bit worn). The first flora of French Guiana, profusely illustrated with excellent plates. "Aublet's further words on the conditions under which a naturalist worked in the French possessions are almost identical to those of Adanson with respect to his Senegalese years; the scorn of the other settlers, the absence of chances of financial reward, the hard-boiled mercenary attitude of his 'colleagues'. In addition to that are the hardships of trying to botanize in the tropical jungle with its - at that time - almost unknown hazards. . The 'Histoire' of 1775 is written, characteristically, in French and in Latin . it is remarkable that Aublet's book is fully Linnaean both with respect to taxonomy (the sexual system and the generic delimitations) and to nomenclature. It contains the descriptions of not less than 400 new species . it is still the basis for the study of the flora of the Guiana region" (Stafleu. Linnaeus and the Linnaeans, p. 283)."It is clear that Fusée Aublet should be considered one of the 'founding fathers' of neotropical ethnobotany. Although most botanists think of his 'Histoire des Plantes de la Guiane Françoise' as a taxonomic treatise, Aublet was in fact sent to French Guiana as an Apothecary-Botanist. His book describes uses of 124 species from 56 different families. That he employed many of the plants himself and that he … [Click Below for Full Description]

F'cap 8vo format (watermark uninterpretable); bound up without the half-title; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.[iii] - xii+178+[ii]; A5 (ex 6), B - I, K - M8, N2; contemporary watered calf, ruled and tooled gilt on spine, contrasting label; marbled end-papers. Quarter inch chip to calf at head of spine, and external joints cracked, but holding firmly on the cords and end-papers; otherwise a very nice copy. A prominent bluestocking, this was Hester Chapone's second book of only three published in her lifetime. It includes three essays: 'On Affectation and Simplicity'; 'On Conversation'; and 'On Enthusiasm, and Indifference in Religion'; the novella: 'The Story of Fidelia' which had earlier appeared as a serial in Hawkesworth's 'Adventurer' (77-8-9); and fifteen poems, the earliest of which dated from 1749, and the best known of which, 'To Stella', Samuel Johnson had quoted in his Dictionary in 1755 to illustrate his definition of 'quatrain'. The volume includes one poem not by Chapone: a sonnet by Thomas Edwards, one of the chief enthusiasts for the revival of that form, who had done much to promote it in his 1750 work 'The Canons of Criticism'. The preface (vol. I, ix-xxxi) is by Samuel Johnson, as is also 'The Vision of Theodore, the Hermit of Tenerife, found in his Cell' (vol. II, 520-30). Chapman and Hazen (citing the first edition) call for one frontispiece and 28 plates only. "Tom Tyres said that Johnson composed [The Vision of Theodore] in one night 'after finishing an evening in Holborn'. Bishop Percy heard Johnson say that it was the best thing he ever wrote. 'The Picture of Human Life: Translated from the Greek of Cebes,' which forms the conclusion of the second volume, and is introduced as 'translated into English, by a person considerably distinguished in the Republic of Letters', has been attributed to Johnson" (Courtney & Smith) but Fleeman says that the attribution is "not persuasive."
