MILTON, (John)
London, R. Bladon, et al. 1775 - Two volumes, original calf extremities worn, joints cracked frontispiece and 8 (of 12) plates (lacking plates to Books 4, 5, 7, and 11), light embrowning, name on end-paper and inscription on back cover of first volume, some worming to outer edges of first portion of first volume with slight loss to pages 13 through 25, minor chipping to spines and covers, still not that bad considering the rarity. We have seen one other example of this edition, and the ESTC On-line locates only the British Library and Inverness Public Library copies. Jean Baptiste Greuze (painter): Jean Massard (engraver)
Jean Baptiste Greuze, Paris 1775 - This is a very rare and well documented print. It was engraved in 1775 by Jean Massard after a drawing by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Greuze had produced a drawing specifically for the purpose of it being engraved, and in 1772 entered into an agreement with Massard to engrave the drawing as an exact copy of the drawing and to the same size. Each print from the engraving was to be signed on the reverse by both Greuze and Massard, as this print is (on the verso - see image) The Art Gallery of New South Wales has another copy of this print, and also the original drawing. The only other copy of which we are aware is in the British Museum. It may be presumed that only a few copies were made, and even fewer will have survived. We understand that Greuze made an earlier painting, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1769, very similar to this engraving. The painting was however a portrait of Jean-Joseph de Laborde and his family, commisioned by de Laborde, and it is not the model for this engraving (pace the British Museum). The painting is now in the Collection Laborde in Madrid. De Laborde was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. The picture is in the typical style of Greuze (1725-1805), one of the foremost European genre painters. The art critic Diderot claimed that Greuze was "the first who has set out to give art some morals, and to organise events into series that could easily be turned into novels." Jean Massard (1740-1822) was a pupil of the King's engraver, Martinet. The condition of the print is not perfect. The print is o … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERQUIN (Arnaud), ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques)
Paris, 1775. (Cohen, 141. Dufour, I, p. 224. Tchemerzine-Scheler, V, 556). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Voltaire, d. i. François Marie Arouet, écrivain et philosophe (1694–1778).
Ferney, 26. II. 1775. 2 pp. 4to, papier.

Title-page with two very small contemporary stamps, one a monogram, the other an armorial with a crowned lion, likely corresponding to the feature of the covers. Handsomely-bound almanac from Bohemia for the year 1776. It includes (sigs. D2v-F1r) an astrological report, (F1v-F2r) the Jewish calendar, (F2v-F4r) postal services, and (F4v-G2v) tables of exchange and interest. The 97 numbered pages list members of the noble families of Bohemia, from the dukes down, showing jobs and professions where they have them. These leading families may have provided a market for the almanac. This is shown in the present copy, where the supralibros, featuring lion with coronet, probably indicates that the copy came from a noble library. OCLC (01/18) shows no copies of almanacs in this series outside Germany. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand, London, 1775. [2], 91, [1 blank] pp. Disbound and lacking the half title, title page lightly dusted, else Very Good Printed in the same year as the first edition, this pamphlet rebuts the "loud clamours" and "wild affections" of ingrates "who have denied to the parliament of Britain the right of taxing the American colonies." England, he says, has "the supreme power" to demand "such contributions as are necessary to the public safety or the public prosperity." Johnson mocks the colonists' myth that they "fled from tyranny to rocks and deserts," and that England should abandon "all claims of justice, and all sense of dignity, in compassion for a harmless people, who having worked hard for bread in a wild country.are now invaded by unprecedented oppression, and plundered of their properties by the harpies of taxation." [Johnson Samuel]
for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1775. First edition. Issue with six line errata. 8vo, in a lovely binding of full contemporary polished calf, spine with simple and tasteful raised bands ruled in gilt and a red morocco label, gilt lettered. [3], 384. An especially fine copy, in completely original state with no repairs or restoration whatsoever, highly unusual with both the text and binding in such a fine state of preservation. With excellent provenance and fine baronial bookplate. FIRST EDITION IN A BEAUTIFUL STATE OF PRESERVATION. Johnson undertook this expedition at the ripe old age of 64, but it had its origin in a book, Martin's DESCRIPTION OF THE WESTERN ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND (1703), which his father gave him in his youth. "His attention was drawn to the anecdote of the man of St. Kilda, who thought that the high church of Glasgow had been carved out of a high rock, and had remarked that there were some in that island 'much higher'. This fascinated him and remained, while life lasted, in his mind.....His narrative of the journey was written in a more homely style than many of his previous publications, and it was not meant unkindly" (Courtney and Smith, pp. 118-9). Traditionally this is called the second issue of the first edition owing to the six versus the twelve line errata. It contains Johnson's final corrections (despite the presence of the errata leaf) and is the authorized text of the book.

London Sayer & Bennett. First edition. Large folio. 22 engraved charts, many double-page or folding, some with inset plans, with title page (verso blank) and 2pp text. Contemporary half calf, joints repaired, marbled boards, within a morocco-backed drop-back box, spine lettered in gilt. Extremely rare. Published in the year of Cook's return to England from his second voyage, this is the first issue of the complete edition of the survey of Newfoundland and Labrador which he carried out in 1760s. These incredibly detailed and accurate charts, along with his skills as a navigator, were largely responsible for Cook being given command of the Endeavour, which took him on his first circumnavigation. Samuel Holland, the first Surveyor General of British North America, gives an insight into Cook's surveying work in North America: '.whenever I could get a moment of time from my duty, I was on board the Pembroke where the great cabin, dedicated to scientific purposes and mostly taken up with a drawing table, furnished no room for idlers. Under Capt.
