Dekorativer Lederband der Zeit mit reicher Rückenvergoldung. Erste Ausgabe. [Philadelphia, 1775. Folio broadside, 8" x 13-1/4". Old folds, several blank margin chips and light wear, else Very Good. Quakers were subject to much public obloquy in Pennsylvania for refusing to support the American Revolution. Signed in type by James Pemberton, Clerk of the Meeting, this broadside explains why Quakers have refrained "from joining with the public resolutions promoted and entred into by some of the people." The reason: Quakers are required to be "peaceable subjects, and to discountenance and avoid every measure tending to excite disaffection to the king, as supreme magistrate, or to the legal authority of his government. We are, therefore, incited by a sincere concern for the peace and welfare of our country, publicly to declare against every usurpation of power and authority, in opposition to the laws and government, and against all combinations, insurrections, conspiracies, and illegal assemblies."II Streeter Sale 766. THIS IS A VERY RARE COMPLETE SET OF A CLASSIC WITH ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY BINDINGS EVER SEEN! TITLE AND CONDITION Cours D'Etude Pour L'Instruction du Prince de Parme... Par. M.l'Abbe de Condillac. A Parme, De L'Imprimerie Royale. 1775. 16 Volumes (complete). The binding is amazing, all 16 volumes have a spine constructed from medieval original manuscripts as shown. All books are in fine condition as shown, almost as if they came out of the press today, apparently never read, with a few exceptions of minor foxing in a few pages here and there, or one or two damp marks. Interestingly, some of the volumes have the word "Prince" in the cover crossed out and the word "Citoyen" added instead (clearly a sign of post French Revolutionary times). NOTE: Shipping cost to countries other than the US can be negotiated. Please ask. BACKGROUND [FROM WIKIPEDIA] Ferdinand (20 January 1751 - 9 October 1802), baptised Ferdinand Maria Philip Louis Sebastian Francis James, was the Duke of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla from his father's death on 18 July 1765 until he ceded the duchy to France by the Treaty of Aranjuez on 20 March 1801. He was a member of the Spanish House of Bourbon. Born at the Ducal Palace of Colorno as the second child and only son of Philip, Duke of Parma, and Princess Louise Élisabeth of France, he was considered to be the favorite grandson of his maternal grandfather King Louis XV of France. As a grandson in the male line of King Philip V of Spain, he was also an infante of Spain. LINGUET (N.).
A Paris, 1775. in-12. 2ff. XX. 179pp. Bel exemplaire. Peignot, I, 244. Jammes, Le Bûcher Bibliographique, 451. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(24), 475, (1) pp. Finely bound in modern calf with giltstamped label to gilt spine. First edition. Campomanes (1723-1802) was a distinguished Spanish statesman, jurist and economist who greatly contributed to the improvement of Spanish commerce and industry, the promotion of agriculture, the reform of the system of taxation and the diffusion of popular education. His theoretic views and practical efforts strikingly resemble those of his illustrious contemporary Turgot. Schumpeter notes that in view of the date of publication, Campomanes had little if anything to learn from Adam Smith. The present volume deals not only with the education of the Spanish working class, including chapters on apprenticeship, examinations and female labour, but also discusses guilds, provisions and funds for the disabled and aged, etc. It also boasts a chapter on Spanish foreign trade, particularly with the West Indies, which was overlooked by Sabin. The present work is significantly rarer than the author's better-known "Discurso sobre el fomento de la industria popular", published the previous year. - Faint dampstaining to lower margin of first and last leaves, but a fine copy. Kress 7088. Higgs 6474. Palgrave I, 208. McCulloch p. 361. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LEOPOLDO, PIETRO]. - [CREATING ECONOMIC SOCIAL REFORM]
Firenze, Gaetano Cambiagi, 1775. Royal8vo. In patterned contemporary paper wrappers. Wrappers with some tears and minor loss. Internally very fine, clean, and fresh. 62, (2) pp. Scarce first printing of this collection of tax edicts issued by Pietro Leopoldo II, grand-duke of Tuscany. The intention was to raise the tax-level for the rich and for companies in Siena in order to spend the extra income on the poor and needy. In this sense, the present collection of tax-edicts represents one of the very earliest European attempts to create economic social reform in the spirit of the Enlightenment. This became a source of inspiration for the French Constitution. Pietro Leopoldo initiated a process of political, social and economic change in Siena which lasted several decades into the 19th century. It has been argued that this turned Siena from a patrician city - symbolized by the nobility - into a middleclass and bourgeois city. Partly due to laws and guidelines presented in the present work, Siena went from being a city whose most significant features were convents and monasteries to being a city characterized by its public and civil institutions. Leopold also approved and collaborated on the development of a political constitution, said to have anticipated the promulgation of the French Constitution, which bore some similarities to the Virginia Bill of Rights of 1778. Leopold's concept of this was based upon respect for the political rights of citizens and upon a harmony of power between the executive and the legislative. Leopold developed and supported many social and economic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trenck, Friedrich von der.
O. O., 1775. Nur 1. Band (von 2). (16), 336 SS. (Dabei:) Gedanken eines Deutschen am Namenstage unsers Reichs Oberhaupts den 19. Merz 1775. 8 SS. (Dabei:) Politische Anmerkungen über die Zeitungen und Vorfälle Europens für das Jahr 1775. 112 SS. Loser Vorderdeckel einer zeitgenöss. Interimsbroschur. 8vo. Erste Ausgabe. Minor foxing to first and last few leaves. Most of second half of text unopened; untrimmed. Just about very good. A scholarly edition of Gunnlaugi's Saga, "A love story of great sentimental charm" (EB). Written in Icelandic and Latin, the work is extensively annotated and includes a copious dictionary. The folding plates are of a meeting house and banquet hall from the period 1000 A.D., when the Sagas were actually recited. The Icelandic Sagas hold the seed for all early Norse literature and history and are one of the great sources for Western literature, influencing such works as the Arthurian legends and the operas of Wagner. The editor has contributed extensive footnotes, sometimes longer than the text itself, and the appendix includes several genealogies. BRUNET V, p.28. FISKE I:211. GRAESSE VI, p.216. EB XXIII, p.1001.

Peu commun.

Gordon, William
London, 1775. [4],36pp. Modern buckram, spine gilt. Contemporary ink ownership signature and small ink stain on first leaf, minor foxing. Very good. Untrimmed. A fiery sermon on the "distressing and alarming" state of affairs in the American colonies by William Gordon, pastor of the Third Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Gordon blasts the Crown and Parliament of Great Britain: "The late venal Parliament, in compliance with the directions of administration, have, under the false colour of regulating the government of the colony, mutilated its charter, and conveyed dangerous powers to individuals, for the enforcing and maintaining those encroachments, that they have ventured, in defiance of common equity, to make upon the rights of a free people.... The operation of the late unconstitutional acts of the British Parliament, would not only deprive the colony of individual privileges, but introduce a train of evils, little expected by the generality, and give the British ministry such an ascendancy in all public affairs, as would be to the last degree dangerous." The half-title reads, "Religious and Civil Liberty, a Thanksgiving Discourse." Reprinted in the same year from the first Boston edition, which included a warning to the colonies to be prepared for an attack, a leaf not issued in this edition. "William Gordon, the rash and unrestrained clergyman of the Third Church in Roxbury, attacked England and the Loyalists, whom he called 'the partisans of slavery'" (Nebezahl). Walter, The sorry tale of a Yarmouth labourer John Day, who though ?illiterate and indigent in his circumstances? had a bold and unshakable confidence in his ability as a submariner. His efforts did find him the fame that he was ?jealous of? - but alas - his notch on the belt of history was the unconverted title of first recorded submarine shipwreck fatality. Day's initial experiments involved using the tide to submerge him in a diving-bell style vessel, which perhaps contributed to his crucial misunderstandings of the pressure implications of vertical submersion. After a modest but much exaggerated success, he took his expanded proposition to professional gambler Christopher Blake Esq. as ?an affair by which money might be won? Blake took the bait - he advanced Day £350 to construct the vessel and offered 10% of all winnings from wagers. With this, Day purchased a 50 ton sloop, the Maria, and employed a Plymouth shipwright Mr. Hunn to modify and refit her to his specifications. These … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANTORINI, Giovanni Domenico.
Parma: [Giambattista Bodoni for] Regia typographia, 1775. First edition. A very fine copy. "The book is one of the finest anatomies of the eighteenth century because of its excellent illustrations and comprehensive commentary." (Heirs of Hippocrates). It is also one of the rarest of the few medical books printed at the celebrated Bodoni Press in Parma, as well as one of the few medical books issued by a private press. ❧Norman 1888; Garrison-Morton 399.1; Heirs of Hippocrates 788; Pincus 248. "Santorini was generally acknowledged as the outstanding anatomist of his time. Many corrections and discoveries in the detailed anatomy of the different organs of the human body go back to Santorini. Even today a facial muscle (risorius), a pair of cartilages (comicula) of the larynx, the emissary veins of the skull, and a part of the superior and inferior turbinates of the ethmoid are named after Santorini. The work belongs to the best of its time, not only as regards the dissections and illustrations, but also as to the very elaborate commentary. Of the 21 plates 17 are by Santorini, two of the last four plates belongs to the anatomist Giovanni Battista Covoli, who was drowned, in 1768, in his youth. The other two plates belongs to the editor, Michael Girardi (1731 - 1797), a professor of anatomy in Parma, who also wrote the commentary to Santorini's plates, thus carrying out Covoli's plans. using, in part, posthumous writings of both Santorini and Covoli. All the 21 plates are done with a light crayon effect which, however, does not impair the anatomic clarity of the prints, but eve … [Click Below for Full Description]
