CHAVIGNY DE LA BRETONNIERE
GRIFFITH, Elizabeth
London: T. Cadell, 1775. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Elizabeth Griffith was an 18th-century author known for her essays as fictional works. However, one of her most important and well-known works of fiction was her extensive critical commentary on the plays of William Shakespeare. It is one of the earliest works of literary criticism by a female, but also one of the earliest works defending Shakespeare against the claims of Voltaire. [Attributes: First Edition]

LINGUET (N.).
A Paris, 1775. in-12. 2ff. XX. 179pp. Bel exemplaire. Peignot, I, 244. Jammes, Le Bûcher Bibliographique, 451. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BARHAM, B.
1775. Manuscript map in colours on vellum, 775 x 985 mm. Though a little grubby and with a circular stain to the lower right, this is nevertheless a lovely manuscript map showing off both the surveyor?s accuracy and his artistic skills; the pastoral scene surrounding the title is particularly fine. The Witherden family owned these extensive lands for several centuries.

1775. Please see item description for detailed condition report. Forster Family Archive Including items relating to Thompson Forster, Staff Surgeon to His Majesty's Detached Hospital in North America during The American War of independence, 1775~1777, and author of the journal: 'DIARY OF THOMPSON FORSTER OCTOBER 19, 1776 TO OCTOBER 23, 1777' Thompson Forster (1748~1830), was born in Halesworth, Suffolk in 1748, son of Rev. Thomas Forster, Rector of Halesworth. He became a Member of the Corporation of Surgeons in 1769. In 1775 he served under Major General Howe as one of two surgeons in His Majesties Detached Hospital. Whilst there, he kept a detailed journal of his experiences. The journal has since become a valuable source of information about The American Revolutionary War, particularly from the British perspective. After the war Forster was appointed surgeon to Guy's Hospital. From 1800 to 1827 he was a Member of the Court of Assistants and Council of the College, and was a Member of the Court of Examiners from 1801 to 1827. He was a Governor of the hospital in 1803, 1804, 1810, 1818, and 1819. He resigned from Guy's in 1824 and had a practice in Southampton Street, Bloomsbury Square. He was described as a very gentlemanly old man with the upright gait, carriage, and the spotless neatness of an old soldier. He was rather precise and prim in manner, and had a decided aversion to the pupils visiting the wards with him with their hats on, which occasionally resulted in a sharp reproof. He died in Southwell, Nottinghamshire in 1830, after retiring to the country. (The galler … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORBES, Francis]
1775. Three folding engraved plates. xvi, 431 pp. 8vo, cont. calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: G. Robinson, 1775. First edition of a somewhat scarce book. "Francis Forbes, who was a great protagonist of the 'New husbandry,' was writing about it at about the same date [as Lord Kames and Cuthbert Clark] because he thought it necessary, and the most agreeable means of satisfying the public of its value was for authors of credit to make known their extensive experience and successful practice of culture for a long series of years. To do this he produced no less than four sizeable books."-Fussell, II, p. 112. The present work was the first in the series to be published. Forbes was an ardent admirer of Tull and a partisan of drill husbandry. The book is divided into four sections: a discussion of how to make fences from field stone, chalk, and wood; the treatment of manures and how to compost; Tull's theories of farming and the uses of the drill plough; and a section on hydraulics and the use of running water (including how to determine its velocity, how to build mills, dams and canals, and the Archimedes screw-pump). A fine copy. The plates depict various farming apparatus, including the drill plough. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SMITH, William (1727-1803).
Philadelphia: James Humphreys, junior, 1775. 8vo., (8 x 5 inches). (A bit browned and spotted throughout). Modern red cloth, the smooth spine lettered in gilt (extremities slightly worn). First edition. Two distinct editions exist, with identical titles, imprints, and collations. In the present edition (Adams 196b) "A sermon on the present situation of American affairs." is printed in four lines. William Smith served as the first provost of the College of Philadelphia (which would become the University of Pennsylvania). "During his long tenure as Penn's first provost, Smith had a significant impact on the early formation of the college which would later be known as the University of Pennsylvania. Although Smith led Anglican services at the College and encouraged discussions of the Bible and religion outside of the classroom, he encouraged students of all faiths to attend and did not include official courses of religion in the curriculum. It was his view that students learned true religion from exposure to pure and truthful teaching. Readings focused on ethics and on deist views of the universe authored by a variety of authors. The quality of Smith's mind was widely recognized. He received honorary D.D. degrees from Oxford and Aberdeen in 1759 and from Dublin in 1763. In 1768 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. "During the Stamp Act crisis and the early years of the American Revolution, Smith favored the broadening of colonial liberties, but decried the tendency to turbulence and upheaval. London: G Robinson, 1775. Front hard calf cover loose, rear hard cover missing. Book itself in very good condition, spine intact. A Practical New GRAMMAR with Exercises of bad English - By Ann Fisher 1775 - Enlarged and much improved. A very rare and collectible children's school book written by the quite brilliant Ann Fisher. The book is 243 years old and has been used by children over generations, there are small poignant reminders of this on some pages adding to the provenance of this beautifully written piece of historical educational literature. Yes you could repair the cover, but in my opinion the book should be enjoyed as it is, to repair would, in part, would take away some of the provenance. Thank you for looking.

GRIFFITH, Elizabeth
T. Cadell. 1775 1st ed Morality of Shakespeare Drama Elizabeth Griffith English Plays Elizabeth Griffith was an 18th-century author known for her essays as fictional works.
