CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de:
Leipzig, Fritsch, 1775-1977. Mit gestoch. Portr., 6 gestoch. Kopfvign. von G. M. Krauss und 5 gestoch. Frontisp. von D. Chodowiecki. Erste Ausgabe der Übersetzung von Bertuch. – Goed. IV/1, 679, 12. Rius I, 738. Bauer 259-63. Engelmann 147, 169-71. [Click Below for Full Description]

Qur'an]. Boysen, Friedrich Eberhard (ed.).
Halle, J. J. Gebauers Wittwe & Johann Jakob Gebauer, 1775. 8vo. 42 (but: 40), 678 pp. With engraved frontispiece. Contemporary unsophisticated wrappers. Second edition of Boysen's German translation of the Qur'an, first published in 1773. This is the second German Qur'an translation based on the original Arabic text, following that of Megerlin in 1772. While Boysen's version is considered more scholarly, more reliable and more readable that Megerlin's, it suffers from a lack of Sura markings, a fact which rendered it a tedious companion for studying the original. The translation was republished, with corrections, in 1828 by S. F. G. Wahl. - Pagination of preliminaries agrees with NUC, with pp. 15f. skipped. Binding a little duststained; spine professionally rebacked. Some browning and foxing, with light waterstaining near the end. Stamp of the Vicariate Apostolic of Oslo to verso of frontispiece; title-page has contemporary handwritten ownership "Kath. Bibliothek". An untrimmed, partly uncut and wide-margined copy. Zenker I, 1400. Schnurrer, p. 431. Graesse IV, 44. Woolworth 285. VD 18, 90017838. Not in Enay. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Massachusetts. Committee of Safety .
Benjamin Edes ?, Watertown, Mass. ?, 1775. continues, "You are hereby aquainted that the Commission as Captain in said Service shall be made out for you as soon as you have compleated the said inlistment, and you also will be allowed to nominate 2 Subalterns to serve under you, who shall receive Commissions accordingly, if the Committee shall approve of them. By Order of the Committee of Safety, [signed in ink] Jos. Warren, Chairman." Warren signed this single sheet document as the Chair of the Committee of Safety, and as President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. The latter post was attained when he succeeded John Hancock, only the day before. This document dates from the earliest beginnings of the Revolutionary War, being just 5 days after the Battles of Lexington & Concord. Samuel A. Foreman in his book about Joseph Warren, describes the context and importance of this document: "The Provincial Congress met at 7:00 AM on Sunday, April 23, to raise an army of thirty thousand. Immediately to be raised by Massachusetts were 13,600 men and the rest requested of neighboring provinces. Warren.was in the center of these actions transitioning the mobilized militia into a standing army. The next day the Committee of Safety sent six hundred enlisting papers to the printing press, each one authorizing an officer to sign up enlisted men for the Provincial Army." Dr. Warren was killed, June 17, 1775 during the battle of Bunker Hill. This "martyrdom" stirred many to the patriot cause. One of the rarest of all Revolutionary War autographs. Size: 7 1/2" X 8"

CURTIS, William.
London printed for and sold by the Author and B. White -1777-1798, 1775. First edition. 2 vols, folio (46 x 27 cm). Engraved vignette on title-page, 435 (on 432) hand-coloured plates after Sydenham Edwards, William Kilburn, James Sowerby and others, dedication leaves and 1 leaf of subscribers in vol. I. (upper outer corner of one text leaf (for Veronica Montana. Mountain Speedwell, the seventh plate) in vol.II torn and repaired with text supplied in manuscript, some leaves very lightly browned, a few instances of offsetting). Nineteenth century brown half morocco gilt over red pebble-grained cloth sides, First edition, with interesting provenance, of William Curtis's magisterial survey of the flora of London and the southern counties of England. It was the earliest English flora illustrated with coloured plates to be in any way approaching comprehensive. Godman (1834-1919) was an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Along with Osbert Salvin, he is remembered for studying the fauna and flora of Central America. He lived at South Lodge, Horsham, and had a magnificent garden. This copy with the catalogue of plants in the environs of Settle, the general observations on grasses, and the indices to the fascicules, often lacking. The work, intended to portray all the native plants within a ten-mile radius of London, was issued irregularly in 75 numbers between May 1775 and 1798. However, Curtis's ambitious enterprise received little encouragement, and was cut short for lack of subscri … [Click Below for Full Description]

WESLEY, John
R. Hawes, in Dorset-Street, Spitalfields, and sold at the Foundry, Moorfields. 1775 1ed John Wesley Calm Address to American Colonies TAXATION Samuel Johnson An incredibly rare first edition of John Wesley’s argument in favor of taxing the American colonies! John Wesley was an English Anglican cleric and theologian. Wesley was one of the most important Anglican theologians and is most remembered for helping found Methodism. Many of Wesley’s doctrines contrasted Whitefield’s Calvinism and promoted his theology in his evangelism and missions. Wesley was an advocate for Arminianism, which strongly opposes Calvinism. Wesley also was an active political advocate, supporting British parliament as well as the Church of England’s rule in the American Colonies. From Abelove: “About the last week of September 1775, John Wesley published ‘A Calm Address to Our American Colonies’. In it he argued that ‘the supreme power in England’ had a clear, legal right to tax the colonies and that the Americans who thought otherwise and were ‘all in an uproar’ had been misled by a small cabal of designing Englishmen. What these Englishmen secretly hoped to do was overthrow the monarchy, and they were fomenting civil unrest in American and in England, too, as a means to that end. If the Americans wanted to be sensible, they would stop acting as dupes of the cabal and quietly pay their taxes.” Sabin notes on this work that it is, “a condensation without acknowledgment of Dr. [Samuel] Johnson’s ‘Taxation no Tyranny’. Item number: #7622 Price: $1500 WESLEY, John A calm address to our American colonies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Klinger, Friedrich Maximilian v.).
Leipzig, Weygand, 1775. – VD18 1533080X; Goed. IV 1, 806, 2; Schulte-Strathaus 1; Deneke 640. [Attributes: First Edition]

Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. This edition printed on excellent paper with no foxing ! Robert Lowth FR 27 November 1710 - 3 November 1787) was a Bishop of the Church of England, Oxford Professor of Poetry and the author of one of the most influential textbooks of English grammar. Lowth was born in Hampshire, Great Britain, the son of Dr William Lowth, a clergyman and Biblical commentator. He was educated at Winchester College and became a scholar of New College, Oxford in 1729. Lowth obtained his BA in 1733 and his Master of Arts degree in 1737. In 1735, while still at Oxford, Lowth took orders in the Anglican Church and was appointed vicar of Ovington, Hampshire, a position he retained until 1741, when he was appointed Oxford Professor of Poetry. Bishop Lowth made a translation of the Bible. The Seventh-day Adventist theologian E J Waggoner said in 1899 that Lowth's translation of Isaiah was „without doubt, as a whole, the best English translation of the prophecy of Isaiah". In 1750 he was appointed Archdeacon of Winchester. In 1752 he resigned the professorship at Oxford and married Mary Jackson. Shortly afterwards, in 1753, Lowth was appointed rector of East Woodhay. Klinger, Friedrich Maximilian v.).
Leipzig, Weygandsche Buchhandlung, 1775. – Vorgebunden: Leisewitz, Johann Anton. Julius von Tarent. Ein Trauerspiel. 109 S. Leipzig, Weygandsche Buchhandlung, 1776. – VD18 15330826; Goed. IV 1, 804, 3a; Schulte-Str. 2. – II. Bryant, Jacob. Blake, William.
1775. London: T. Payne, 1775/1776. 3 vols, 4to, xx, 516; [2], vi, 535; viii, 602 pp, with 31 engravings on the 30 listed plates. A very good and attractive set in clean condition, bound in original calf with gilt decorated rules to covers, and gilt decoration to spine panels, with six compartments and red and black labels. § Vols I and II second edition (1775), and Vol III only edition (1796). The three maps are lacking. All other illustrations are present in good condition but including usual offsetting and a few showing minor mottling and browning. Plate XI, stated in the List of Plates to be a Bartolozzi engraved plate designed by Cypriani from an original onyx Camaio by the Greek artist Tryphon is the correct plate, although in fact it bears no plate No. and the imprint " G. B. Cipriani Del, I.K. Sherwin Sculp.". Although Bartolozzi normally signs his studio's plates, J. K. Sherwin was an apprentice of Bartolozzi's, and presumably was allowed to sign his engraving in this instance. The plate's design matches "The Marriage of Eros and Psyche" from Tryphon's Camaio in the Duke of Marlborough's Collection (see e.g Wikipaedia: "The Marlborough Gem"). Bentley, BB, 439.

Academiae Regalis Scientiarum et nonnullorum alior, secundum annotationes recentissimas." - In Sammlermappe. Vgl. Ritter: Die Welt aus Augsburg. S. 158.

Opera rara e ricercata. Copper engraving, signed by Bernardino Rollers for drawing and by Mariano Bovi for the text. It is one of the most impressive iconographies of Scilla, with the top of the castle that covers the town. The plate is populated with characters, including Minasi himself and the designers of that work. In stormy waters, even a British ship attempts to "schivare gli scolgi di qua e di là di Scilla, pieni di morte nera". Minasi introduces a new technique: the iconography is matched with a legend to the margin of the press, which is a sort of "synthesis" of the investigations conducted by Antonio Minasi. Very good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, perfect condition. Rare … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1775. [Click Below for Full Description]
