Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1775. [Click Below for Full Description]

MAYER, Johann Tobias
Göttingen: Johann Christian Dieterich, 1775. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (290 x 224 mm). [8], 110 pp., 4 engraved plates (one hand-coloured). Modern half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt-lettered label, contemporary front endpaper bound in. Internally very little browned, some light spotting to margins, light brown spotting of title-page, very slight dampstaining to upper blank margin of p.105/106. Fine copy. ---- Ashworth, The face of the moon, Linda Hall 39 - "After Mayer's untimely death, George Christoph Lichtenberg undertook to edit some of Mayer's papers for publication, among them the smaller moon map of 1750. To engrave it, he selected Joel Paul Kaltenhofer, who was not only one of the best engravers in Germany, but a friend of Mayer, and himself a skilled lunar artist. Kaltenhofer's first attempt was rejected, but the second proved satisfactory... One unusual feature of the map is that it has north at the top, contrary to the tradition inaugurated by Cassini and continued by every other lunar map until 1960. When Schröter incorporated Mayer's map in his own moon book (Ashworth 14), he took exception to this disregard of convention, and had the map re-engraved with south up." (Ashworth). In his Opera inedita, Mayer was the first to introduce a system of lunar coordinates. - Visit our website to see more images! Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

POWELL, J. William
Near Fine. Unbound. Folio document Signed by Powell, dated June 15, 1775 in Frederick, Maryland. Powell signs an affidavit repudiating his previous claims that a dying young child had ordered his father to pay Powell 20 shillings and requesting his parents turn his sister over to Powell once she has come of age. In part: "To all People to whom it may concern... I... let fall from my mouth the most heinnious parger'd words... Declaring that 'Certain Moses Cool - Son of John Cool - who departed this life about sixteen or seventeen years ago at the age of eight or nine years...that he the said Moses Cool in time of sickness & on his Death bed did order his father John Cool to give me... the sum of twenty shillings & also requesting his father & mother that When Ever his sister Saria become of age to Give her to me in Mariage & farther declaring that I have often seen the gost of him the said Moses since his death & that I spoke with it concerning the above which I now have a true sence of this my great & miserable crime Do freely acknollege to be entirely falce... ." Powell goes on to repudiate his testimony because of his fear of the abominable sin he has committed. It is signed and witnessed by several enumerated in the document to whom Powell repeated his calumnies. Modest light wear, near fine. An early and unusual mention of ghostly testimony, albeit false, in early America.

Overall in good to very good condition. iv, 100 pp. *** FIRST and only early EDITION. The present work appeared when modern principles of life insurance were beginning to take hold. The Amicable Society referred to in the title was the first company to offer life insurance in modern times, founded in London in 1706. Edward Rowe Mores established the Society for Equitable Assurances on Lives and Survivorship in 1762. The first modern actuary was William Morgan, who served the Society for Equitable Assurances from 1775 to 1830. In 1776 the Society carried out the first actuarial valuation of liabilities. Pages 70-79 contain tables regarding how to calculate annuities, as well as amounts in pounds sterling for annuities and years. Campomanes, Pedro Rodriguez, Conde de
Antonio de Sancha, 1775. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. 8vo. [24], 475, [1] pp. Binding with minor rubbing (a few insignificant wormholes) but overall in excellent condition, the text very clean and crisp. Contemporary Spanish mottled sheep, smooth spine gilt, red morocco label, early paper shelf label at foot, marbled endpapers and edges. Very good. ¶ An extraordinary work on Spanish business development through education of artisans and craftsmen. The work deals with female labor, trades, apprenticeships, as well as provisions and funds for the disabled and old aged members of the working class. It also has a chapter about Spanish foreign trade, notably with the West Indies. ¶ Albert Boime gives an insightful overview of the Spanish government at the time: "Goya's print of the 'Crockery Vendor' celebrates the Spanish government's ideal of a prosperous and proud artisan class, enunciated in Campomanes's publications of 1774-1775, 'Discurso sobre el fomento de la industria popular and Discurso sobre la educacion popular de los artesanos y su fomento.' Campomanes hoped to put to work all the idle classes of the nation, and to this end urged the cultivation of domestic crafts like pottery (although most of his examples are taken from the textile industry) that would not take people from small towns and farms. Over and over he praised the work of the economic societies for their encouragement of the arts and crafts, emphasizing their broad social appeal and representation. He especially lauded the spread of drawing instruction, which he considered 'the father of practical trades an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ann Fisher
London: G Robinson, 1775. Front hard calf cover loose, rear hard cover missing. Book itself in very good condition, spine intact. A Practical New GRAMMAR with Exercises of bad English - By Ann Fisher 1775 - Enlarged and much improved. A very rare and collectible children's school book written by the quite brilliant Ann Fisher. The book is 243 years old and has been used by children over generations, there are small poignant reminders of this on some pages adding to the provenance of this beautifully written piece of historical educational literature. Yes you could repair the cover, but in my opinion the book should be enjoyed as it is, to repair would, in part, would take away some of the provenance. Thank you for looking.

London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1775. FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 4to, pp. xvi, 706, [2]; xii, 656, [24]. Contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments, red and green morocco labels. Some light spotting in places. Boards a bit scratched, extremities rubbed. A very pleasant copy of the most substantial historical work of James 'Ossian' Macpherson (1736-1796). Following 'Temora' in 1763 Macpherson largely kept his head down as the controversy around his most famous works roiled. He was not idle, however, retaining patronage on the basis of his political and journalistic writing, as well as historical studies such as this one, which followed a much shorter 'Introduction to the History of Great Britain and Ireland' of 1771. Agnew, John (c.1732-1790)
Hand sewn calf covers, well worn. 16cm. 118 pp. Short, near daily entries between July 1775 and Sept. 1777, then scattered from 1778-1788, in a legible hand. A wealth of local names are recorded amongst the listings of court cases and other legal transactions. According to the Carlisle County Historical Society, John Agnew, a Carlisle merchant, first served as a Provincial Justice of the Peace for the county in 1770. He retained this position under the new Revolutionary Pennsylvania government, also becoming clerk of the quarter sessions. He also served as a member of the Cumberland County Committee of Correspondence during the war. In 1784, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Agnew begins his entries on July 18, 1775, recording lists of names of plaintiffs and defendants in court cases, and the fees paid. A handful mention cases involving "The King" v. various individuals, several mention the Orphan's Court and guardianship cases. On July 27, 1775 Agnew records that he bought "of Col. Washington 4 hhds. Tob[acco] at 18 p hund. Virginia Curr'cy." [This is likely Col. William Augustine Washington, Gen.
