A manuscript copy of Sanron yoku [trans.: Addenda to Dr. Kagawa Shigen's Obstetrics]. 32 full-page fine drawings in black ink. 23; 25 folding leaves. Two vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rather rubbed with some wear), orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching

[Japan: 1775 or shortly thereafter]. A manuscript copy, prepared shortly after the publication of the first edition in 1775 of this "important writing" (Mestler, II, p. 485) on obstetrics. The father of Genteki Kagawa, Genetsu (or Shigen) Kagawa (1699-1777) is famous for originating the practice of gynecology and obstetrics in Japan. His "San-ron was destined to be the standard authority on obstetrics in Japan for at least a hundred years. That classic work was followed by the San-ron yoku written in 1775 by Genteki or Shikei Kagawa (1739-1779), the adopted son of Genetsu, as a 'supplement' to the San-ron and to correct the errors in the published work of the elder Kagawa, resulting in a considerable improvement in obstetrical methods."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II, pp. 493-94. Genteki Kagawa is famous for using many unconventional devices for facilitating a successful delivery and was the first obstetrician in Japan to understand that the head of the baby should be down during delivery. In the 18th-century, due to the considerable poverty in Japan, many fetuses were aborted. Makers and polishers of mirrors also filled the profession of abortionists as they had access to mercury which could be used to terminate foetuses. When the procedure went wrong, women were brought to Kagawa who noticed that the unborn children's heads were almost always at the bottom of the womb. This manuscript, like the printed edition, is remarkable for the 28 case histories which Kagawa has contributed. He has devoted much of the book to complications during pregnancy and has outlined massage therapy for pregnant women. Very good set.

Marmora et adfines aliquos lapides coloribus suis exprimi.

Contemporary half calf.l Magnificent and outstanding colour-plate book of the mineral kingdom. Sinkansas: "Very little is known about the author of this splendid work aside from that he gives in his title. It is depicting an almost infinitely-varied series of marbles and allied ornamental stones from deposits in Germany and nearby countries. Presumably each of the rectangular panels represents the appearance of a polished slab, with most plates depicting six such pieces, but others two, four, and as many as nine, while one is immediately captivated by the richness and depth of the watercoloring, often heightened by the application of opaque white for veinlets, it can be seen that under each painting lies a complex, lightly-incised network of lines, almost like rouletting, over which the colors have been laid." This first edition should have between 54 and 98 plates of which we have about half or one third, including the "Bayreutische, Würtembergische, Neresheimische Marmor". The text is in Latin and German. Ex libris of Groeninghe Velt of the Borluut family in Flanders pasted in on front. A few text pages slightly browned without touching any plates, however. Landwehr, 1; Sinkankas, 7281-7282. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Journal of the Resolution's Voyage, in 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775

London: F. Newbery, , 1775. On discovery to the southern hemisphere… also a journal of the Adventure's voyage, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774. With an Account of the separation of the two ships, and the most remarkable incidents that befel each. Octavo (210 x 123 mm) Contemporary tree calf, gilt ruled spine, red morocco label, yellow edges. Housed in a custom-made brown quarter calf solander box, marbled sides. Folding track-chart frontispiece and 5 engraved plates. Short split at head of spine, very light abrasions to spine. An excellent copy. First edition, a lovely copy with a striking provenance: from the library of the great African explorer James Bruce of Kinnaird (1730-1794), with his armorial bookplate, additional label ("From Kinnaird 1897") and his signature at the head of title page ("Kinnaird"). "Anxious to emulate the form of James Cook's Voyage to the Pacific Ocean (one of the best-selling travel books of the century), Bruce published his 3000-page Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile in five quarto volumes in 1790. In conformity with eighteenth-century conventions of travel writing, it is an 'immethodical miscellany', ranging from striking adventure stories, reported dialogues, and Shandean asides boasting of his success with African women, through a pedantic history of ancient Ethiopia (which occupies most of the first two volumes), to vivid sketches of contemporary Abyssinian life, politics, and natural history. It was immensely successful, most of the original edition being sold to retail booksellers within thirty-two hours, and was rapidly translated into French and German… [and] remains one of the great travel accounts of the eighteenth century" (ODNB). Having traced the source of the Blue Nile and travelled extensively in Abyssinia Bruce returned to London in 1774: "For a time he was, according to Fanny Burney, 'the Lyon of the Times' (Early Journals and Letters, 44), stealing the show from Captain Cook and Joseph Banks, the recently returned Pacific explorers. Horace Walpole wrote: 'There is just returned a Mr Bruce who has lived for three years in the court of Abyssinia, and breakfasted every morning with the maids of honour on live oxen. Otaheite and Mr Banks are quite forgotten'" (ibid.). "The first printed account of man's entry into the region south of the Antarctic circle" (Spence), the plates including the first published images of the region. This rare account of Cook's second voyage was "published 'anonymously and surreptitiously' eighteen months before Cook's official narrative. It records many incidents omitted by Cook, and gives the reasons which caused Sir Joseph Banks and his twelve assistants to withdraw from the expedition" (Hill). Marra, a native of Cork, was one of the gunner's mates on the Resolution, and was picked up by Cook at Batavia where he had deserted from the Schoonzigt, a Dutch East India Company vessel. He was later to attempt to desert from Resolution when she was at Tahiti, and was clapped in irons for his pains, despite the fact that Cook was remarkably relaxed about the incident, commenting that: "I know not if he might not have obtained my consent, if he had applied for it in the proper time". Marra's correspondence with Banks shows that he "was incapable of writing a consecutive account of anything" (Holmes), his contribution to the publication being extracts from his private journal which were then edited and elaborated by David Henry, printer, miscellaneous writer, and at the time sole publisher of the Gentleman's Magazine. Cook himself identified Marra as the author of this work in a letter to the Admiralty dated 18 September 1775. A superb copy, with a provenance that links two of the greatest names in the history of exploration – James Bruce and Captain Cook. "If Captain Cook was the first truly modern 'scientific' maritime explorer then James Bruce has some claim to be the first scientific continental explorer" (Jennifer Speake ed., Literature of Travel and Exploration, 2003, p. 130).

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM FRANCISCAN MISSIONARY FRANCISCO PALOU TO FATHER FRANCISCO PANGUA AT THE COLLEGE OF SAN FERNANDO, CONCERNING CHURCH BUSINESS].

San Carlos de Monterey. July, 1775. - [2]pp. Some professional reinforcement, moderate staining, costing some letters in the margins. Very good. Accompanied by a typed English translation. In a buckram folder, paper spine label. One of the earliest California mission letters in private hands, written only five years after the founding of the mission, by one of the most important figures in the development of 18th-century California. Documents signed by Palou are rare in the market, especially from this early period in his California career. Father Francisco Palóu (ca. 1722-89) was a student of Father Junipero Serra and followed his teacher to California, where the two men, in conjunction with other missionaries, labored to build a system of missions in Upper and Lower California. Father Palóu and Capt. Juan Bautista de Anza established mail service over the Anza Trail from mission to mission from Mexico City to Monterey in 1774, along what is now called El Camino Real. This letter refers to "that which was carried by Juan Bautista de Anza ." Palóu participated in Captain Rivera’s expedition to San Francisco Bay in late 1774, arriving at Lobos Creek in early December, just months before he wrote this letter. Palóu founded numerous missions in and around San Francisco, and was at one time or another the superior of the missions of Upper and Lower California, briefly succeeding Serra as president of the Upper California missions in 1784. He retired the next year and became guardian of San Fernando College until his death about 1790. He is best known as the author of the first great California biography, VILLA DE JUNIPERO SERRA AND NOLICKUT DE LAS CALIFORNIA, and standard works on early mission history, including NOTICIAS DE LA NUEVA CALIFORNIA. The present letter reads, in part: "Through the hands of Father Vincente Santa Maria I received the letter of Your Reverence of November 24, last, in which you told me you had received the letter which Don Juan Bautista de Anza brought, and that you would gladly send the power of attorney to Don Manuel de Monte Aoyda, resident of the town of San Miguel de Horcasitas. In this matter I thank you for the benefits that can come from this for the minsters of these missions, having a brother on the frontier of Sonora who aids us in the needs from which we suffer. This is the first notice I have had that the Holy Community with great wisdom has elected Your Reverence as our Guardian.I place myself from that time on in obedience to Your Reverence as one of your subjects, though unworthy, and I await your precepts and lightest wishes in order to express my complete obedience. I am grateful for your kind words and for the ardent desires you have to aid in the growth of these new missions. The knowledge I have of your well-known zeal and affection tells me this and I do not doubt that you will aid in so far as you can in their progress as well as in the great credit that will accrue to this Apostolic College. Please bear with patience the impertinences of the ministers of these missions, with which it is their custom to trouble you. They are motivated at least by the purpose of a heart-to-heart contact with their religious superior." An exceptionally early Palóu letter, from a man vital to the development of the mission system throughout the Baja California peninsula and Alta California in the 18th century.

Loto de Dauphin (Prinzenlotto) für 8 Spieler.

Paris. Au Singe Violet, Ende 18. Jahrhhundert. Loto de Dauphin for 8 players. France, late 18th century. Au Singe Violet. 8 single playing fields as etchings on paper, mounted on wood, with 90 fields each and a water-coloured green background. Each playing field with compartment holding 5 bone jetons and 5 bone spikes in 4 colours each, as well as a carved bone dolphin (a pun concerning 'dauphin' meaning both prince and dolphin). With a white leather pouch holding additional jetons and spikes, also in two further colours. - In the original cardboard case (the missing rule book added as a print). With two added 18th/19th century small papers with handwritten annotations in French concerning the game. The 90 conical nibs for drawing numbers as well as the wooden paddle to hold the drawn ones missing. Some playing fields with fractures of the wood. - The Loto de Dauphin was invented in 1775 by French toymaker Vaugeois as a more complicated variation on existing lotto games. This game was popular especially in Versailles with the young Dauphin, popular lore has it that Louis XVI himself had the idea for the game, to amuse his son, and henceforth it was played in Versailles every night. A copy accompanied the Royal family even to the Temple. Until the 19th century, it remained a favourite with French upper class families. In a folding carton of the time with marbled colored paper, with threads for closing at all edges. On the upper flip cover described: Loto de Dauphin. Lacking the wooden wheel, the cardboard box slightly bumped, some fields with slight tear marks, otherwise well preserved. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was then followed by two series of pyrotechnical shots and music, danc

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM FRANCISCAN MISSIONARY FRANCISCO PALOU TO FATHER FRANCISCO PANGUA AT THE COLLEGE OF SAN FERNANDO, CONCERNING CHURCH BUSINESS]

San Carlos de Monterey, 1775. [2]pp. This letter refers to "that which was carried by Juan Bautista de Anza…." Palóu participated in Captain Rivera's expedition to San Francisco Bay in late 1774, arriving at Lobos Creek in early December, just months before he wrote this letter. This is the first notice I have had that the Holy Community with great wisdom has elected Your Reverence as our Guardian...I place myself from that time on in obedience to Your Reverence as one of your subjects, though unworthy, and I await your precepts and lightest wishes in order to express my complete obedience. They are motivated at least by the purpose of a heart-to-heart contact with their religious superior...." An exceptionally early Palóu letter, from a man vital to the development of the mission system throughout the Baja California peninsula and Alta California in the 18th century.

- DSB II, 286 "Ch. Bonnet is considered one of the fathers of modern biology. He is distinguished for both his experimental research and philosophy, which exerted a profound influence upon the naturalists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries" - Caillet, I.n°1402 - Murphy, Hist. introd. to modern psychology, p. 37 "Bonnet described memory in terms of activities in nerve fibers .. He performed a rough experiment on the 'span of attention'. He suggested that each quality of sensation must depend upon the specific brain area axcited" - Roback, History of Psychology and Psychiatry, p. 388 "One of the neglected men in the history of psychology is the naturalist Charles Bonnet, whom we have earlier seen in the company of the French sensationalist, Condillac."

Prijs: ?3.450,-.

A Modern System of Natural History, Containing Accurate Descriptions and faithful Histories, of Animals, Vegetables, and Minerals. Together with Their Properties, and various Uses in Medicine, Mechanics, Manufactures, &c. Illustrated With a great Variety of Copper-Plates, accurately drawn from Nature, and beautifully engraved.

London: Printed for F. Newbery. - 1776 1775 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12 volumes. 12mo (in 6s), 142 x 82 mms., pp. [iii], iv - xv [xvi blank], [17], 18 - 180; [3], 4 - 180; [3], 4 - 178 [179 - 180 adverts]; [3], 4 - 124, xlviii [xlix - l "Directions to the Binder," li - liv adverts]; [5] 6 - 180; [5], 6 - 180; [5] 6 - 179 [180 blank]; [5] 6 - 120, li [lii blank, liv - lvi "Celebrated Performances in Natural History," lvii - lx "Directions to the Binder"]; [5], 6 - 180; [5], 6 - 164, xv [xvi "Directions to the Book-Binder"]; [5], 6 - 178 [179 Index, 180 "Directions to the Binder"]; [5], 6 - 171 [ii], iii "Directions to the Binder," [iv blank, v - vi "Entertaining Books for Children printed for F. Newbery"], 118 engraved plates (all called for and thus complete), recently and sturdily rebound in quarter chocolate brown calf, marbled boards, red morocco labels. A very good set. The twelve volumes are divided intro three sections: the first four volumes cover the animal kingdom, including the well-known mention of the kangaroo in volume 3; the next four volumes, 5 to 8 cover birds; volumes 9 and 10 are given over to fishes; volume 11, reptiles and insects; and volume 12, "waters, earths, fossils, minerals, and vegetables." Like most Newbery imprints, this one is designed for a juvenile audience. The compiler, Samuel Ward (1764 - 1798), is described on the title-page as "Vicar of Cotterstock cum Glapthorne; Northamptonshire; and others," and he was also the headmaster of or principal teacher at a private school. He seems to have a sense of humour, opening the section on crocodiles (XI, 29), with this observtion: "This animal is palced at a happy distance from the inhabitants of Europe," and then devotes 20 pages to describing them. The work is also known for its mention of a kangaroo (volume IV), often said to be discovered for the first time, at least by Europeans, by Sir Joseph Banks in Captain Cook's first voyage in1770. A contradictory, and perhaps more accurate claim, is made for one Captain Pelsart, whose East India company ship, Batavia, was wrecked on the Abrolhos islands in 1629, where they sighted the Dama Walla by, the first member of the kangaroo family known to Europeans. The new and complete dictionary of the English language To which is prefixed a compendious grammar

London: Edward and Charles Dilly, 1775. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, unpaginated lexicon in double column; A5 a-b4 c2 B-4G4; [*] *4G 4H-7L4 7M2; full 20th-century brown calf, original spines laid down, new peach endpapers; about fine. With "[Price Twelve Shillings.]" printed at bottom of Vol. I title page (no priority). Ash (?1724-1779) was an English Baptist minister whose dictionary (second edition, 1795) was compiled on the basis of Bailey's. In a catalogue of 1872 John Russell Smith writes: "A very useful dictionary as it contains obsolete, provincial, and cant words and phrases, besides a number of technical terms." In a letter to David Ramsay, Webster notes: "It is questionable how far vulgar and cant words are to be admitted into a dictionary... Johnson has transgressed the rules of lexicography beyond any other compiler; for his work contains more of the lowest of all vulgar words than any other now extant, Ash excepted." Roma 1775 - - PRIMO STATO DI TRE - Acquaforte e bulino, 1775, firmata in lastra . - THE FIRST STATE OF THREE - Etching with engraving, 1775, signed on plate. From the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB", with margins, very good condition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris.

Engraving, printed from a plate engraved in the niello manner, possibly 1775-1800. This fascinating work, was for years attributed to the hand of Maso Finiguerra. A good impression, printed on laid paper, tirmmed to the paletamrk, good condition. Hind 1936 294.a; K.
