Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was then followed by two series of pyrotechnical shots and music, danc

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM FRANCISCAN MISSIONARY FRANCISCO PALOU TO FATHER FRANCISCO PANGUA AT THE COLLEGE OF SAN FERNANDO, CONCERNING CHURCH BUSINESS]

San Carlos de Monterey, 1775. [2]pp. Some professional reinforcement, moderate staining, costing some letters in the margins. Very good. Accompanied by a typed English translation. In a buckram folder, paper spine label. One of the earliest California mission letters in private hands, written only five years after the founding of the mission, by one of the most important figures in the development of 18th-century California. Documents signed by Palou are rare in the market, especially from this early period in his California career. Father Francisco Palóu (ca. 1722-89) was a student of Father Junipero Serra and followed his teacher to California, where the two men, in conjunction with other missionaries, labored to build a system of missions in Upper and Lower California. Father Palóu and Capt. Juan Bautista de Anza established mail service over the Anza Trail from mission to mission from Mexico City to Monterey in 1774, along what is now called El Camino Real. This letter refers to "that which was carried by Juan Bautista de Anza…." Palóu participated in Captain Rivera's expedition to San Francisco Bay in late 1774, arriving at Lobos Creek in early December, just months before he wrote this letter. Palóu founded numerous missions in and around San Francisco, and was at one time or another the superior of the missions of Upper and Lower California, briefly succeeding Serra as president of the Upper California missions in 1784. He retired the next year and became guardian of San Fernando College until his death about 1790. He is best known as the author of the first great California biography, VILLA DE JUNIPERO SERRA AND NOLICKUT DE LAS CALIFORNIA, and standard works on early mission history, including NOTICIAS DE LA NUEVA CALIFORNIA. The present letter reads, in part: "Through the hands of Father Vincente Santa Maria I received the letter of Your Reverence of November 24, last, in which you told me you had received the letter which Don Juan Bautista de Anza brought, and that you would gladly send the power of attorney to Don Manuel de Monte Aoyda, resident of the town of San Miguel de Horcasitas. In this matter I thank you for the benefits that can come from this for the minsters of these missions, having a brother on the frontier of Sonora who aids us in the needs from which we suffer. This is the first notice I have had that the Holy Community with great wisdom has elected Your Reverence as our Guardian...I place myself from that time on in obedience to Your Reverence as one of your subjects, though unworthy, and I await your precepts and lightest wishes in order to express my complete obedience. I am grateful for your kind words and for the ardent desires you have to aid in the growth of these new missions. The knowledge I have of your well-known zeal and affection tells me this and I do not doubt that you will aid in so far as you can in their progress as well as in the great credit that will accrue to this Apostolic College. Please bear with patience the impertinences of the ministers of these missions, with which it is their custom to trouble you. They are motivated at least by the purpose of a heart-to-heart contact with their religious superior...." An exceptionally early Palóu letter, from a man vital to the development of the mission system throughout the Baja California peninsula and Alta California in the 18th century.

Prijs: ?3.450,-.

The new and complete dictionary of the English language To which is prefixed a compendious grammar

London: Edward and Charles Dilly, 1775. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, unpaginated lexicon in double column; A5 a-b4 c2 B-4G4; [*] *4G 4H-7L4 7M2; full 20th-century brown calf, original spines laid down, new peach endpapers; about fine. With "[Price Twelve Shillings.]" printed at bottom of Vol. I title page (no priority). Ash (?1724-1779) was an English Baptist minister whose dictionary (second edition, 1795) was compiled on the basis of Bailey's. In a catalogue of 1872 John Russell Smith writes: "A very useful dictionary as it contains obsolete, provincial, and cant words and phrases, besides a number of technical terms." In a letter to David Ramsay, Webster notes: "It is questionable how far vulgar and cant words are to be admitted into a dictionary... Johnson has transgressed the rules of lexicography beyond any other compiler; for his work contains more of the lowest of all vulgar words than any other now extant, Ash excepted."

Finely engraved vignette on titles, each different, 48 engraved plates of maps, plans, & charts (six heightened in color) on 40 folding sheets, & one folding printed table. Six vols. Large 4to, cont. speckled boards (several with minor rubbing), red vellum lettering pieces on spines. Freiberg: Barthel, 1775-76-78-81-84-86. First edition of this outstanding history of the German campaigns during the Seven Years' War, describing the strategies employed during the conflict. Tielke (1731-87), wrote a series of works on military history and science based on his extensive theoretical knowledge, as well as first-hand combat experience - he was wounded at the Battle of Torgau. Tielke not only recapitulates the decisive moments of these campaigns, he also furnishes case studies regarding tactics, artillery, and fortification. The present work received much praise for its precise methodology, presentation of arguments, and judicious use of historical examples. The finely executed plates include highly detailed maps and battle-plans, including those for Schweidnitz and Maxen, plans and cross-sections of fortifications, and charts of formations and their evolution during the course of the battles. Many of the plates contain complex diagrams, highlighting trajectories and lines-of-sight, and are clearly intended for the instruction of field engineers. A fine copy. ❧ A.D.B., Vol. 38, pp. 286-88.

Anatomici Summi. Septemdecim Tabulae quas nunc Primum Edit atque Explicat iisque Alias Addit de Structura Mammarum et de Tunica Testis Vaginali Michael Girardi. ORIGINAL, UNTRIMMED STATE.

Parmae: Ex Regia Typographia, 1775. - Frontispiece portrait, 4 leaves, xxxv, 217, pp, 1 leaf ["Monita" on recto]; 21 plates, each with a facing outline plate (the plates are numbered I-XVII, CI, CII, GI, GII). Folio. Original pastepaper boards. A few spot stains in upper blank margin of a few leaves. Untrimmed. Near Fine. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 399.1: "Santorini died before the completion of these anatomical plates which he intended to be his chef d'oeuvre. This elegantly printed volume is the only significant medical book printed by the celebrated Giambattista Bodoni for the Duke of Parma." "All the twenty-one prints of the work are done in a light crayon effect which, however, does not impair the anatomic clarity of the prints, but even brings out well the differences in the tissues. Each plate is accompanied by an outline plate which is marked with reference letters. The seventeen plates by Santorini have a ruled margin at the top and on the side, like the Eustachian plates, but have no signatures of the artists. They were drawn by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, who made the coppers for Tasso's Gierusalemme Liberata. . . . A woman, Florentia Marcella, engraved Santorini's plates under Santorini's personal supervision. . . . The work belongs to the best of its time. . ., not only as regards the dissections and illustrations, but also as to the very elaborate commentary. The pictures deal with facial muscles, the base of the brain and other parts of the brain, the organs of smell and hearing, the pharynx, the breasts, the heart, the diaphragm with the beginning of the thoracic duct, the stomach, the liver, the intestines, the pancreas, the ileocaecal valve. . ., the bladder, the muscles of the perineum, and the genitals. Covoli's pictures represent the breasts, the tunics of the testicle and a six months' foetus" (Choulant, History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration, pp. 263-64). "Santorini was generally acknowledged as the outstanding anatomist of his time. Many corrections and discoveries in the detailed anatomy of the different organs of the human body go back to Santorini. Even today a facial muscle (risorius), a pair of cartilages (cornicula) of the larynx, the emissary veins of the skull, and a part of the superior and inferior turbinates of the ethmoid are named after Santorini" (Hagelin, Rare and Important Medical Books in the Library of Swedish Society of Medicine, pp. 112-13). Course of the River Mississippi from the Balise to Fort Chartres; Taken on an expedition to the Illinois, in the later end of Year 1765

Rob Sater, London 1775 - Map. Hand-colored engraving on two sheets. Image measures 44 1/4 x 14 1/4" Ross's map of the Mississippi is widely regarded as the finest and most detailed map of the river made in the 18th century. Utilizing surveys of the river which the French conducted, Ross synthesized them into a sizable and thorough depiction of the River, and in fact, the first official survey of its lower portion. The map extends from the area of present-day St. Louis down to Fort Balise on the Gulf of Mexico. Descriptive notes provide information on river depth and the surrounding areas and elevations. Surrounding tributaries, rivers, cities, Indian villages and forts are all labeled. Notes from early expeditions as far back as the 16th century are also included. This map is the second edition of the map and is in very good condition, with slight scattered foxing and off-setting. This map is a crisp and lovely representation of the country's most impressive river.

        L'arretin moderne

      - Aux dépens deLa Congrégation de l'Index, A Rome 1775, In-12 (9,5x16,5cm), 230pp. (1) ; 212pp., 2 parties en un volume relié. - Nuova edizione dopo l'originale è apparso allo stesso indirizzo nel 1763. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 263-264.

        De sedibus variolarum (smallpox)

Naples & Bologna: Sancti Thomae Aquinatis, 1775. THIRD EDITION. With 1 plate containing 8 engraved figures. Modern vellum backed marbled boards; very light waterstain to bottom of first few leaves, otherwise text very clean. From the library of Dorothy Schullian. Third edition of Cotugno's investigative report on the localization of variola pustules, the smallpox virus. Cotugno describes the history and pathology of smallpox as well as providing a comprehensive description of the virus and ways to prevent the disfiguration of the face: "He recommended that this part should be frequently bathed with tepid milk and water, under the idea that the continual moisture would be efficacious in opposing the complete development of the pustules" (Olliffe). Despite having been an endemic disease for centuries, smallpox became a true crisis during the second half of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, causing nearly half a million deaths. Cotugno's contribution to the study of the disease came at the cusp of Jenner's research and success with the smallpox vaccine, making this work an important part of the early struggle to eradicate the disease from the modern world. The Italian physician Cotugno (1736-1822) was "an outstanding example of the physician-humanist. He was devoted to books and accumulated a large library; was well versed in art, architecture, numismatics, and antiquities . . . Apart from medicine, in which his reputation was such that, the saying went, no one in Naples could die without a passport from him, Cotugno's greatest contributions to science resulted from his fusing of anatomy and physiology to uncover the secrets of the human body." He traced the course of the nasopalatine nerve, which is responsible for sneezing; described the vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea of the osseou labyrinth of the internal ear; demonstrated the existence of labyrinthine fluid; formulated a theory of resonance and hearing; differentiated between arthritic and nervous sciatica, etc. He "exemplified to many students the true investigative and selfless spirit in anatomy and medicine" (DSB).

PYGMALION: SCENE LYRIQUE DE MR. J. J. ROUSSEAU. [bound with] IDYLLE

Paris; [s. l.]: [s. n.], 1775. FIRST EDITION of first work. Elegantly bound, using massed tools to form undulant dentelles in the style of Derôme, this volume is beautiful inside and out. In addition to the animated and elegant binding, the chief pleasure of the book lies in the engraved text by Drouet and the elegant engravings after Jean-Michel Moreau "le Jeune" (1741-1814). Ray says that the work done by Moreau during the 1760s "showed him to be the equal of the established rococo masters Boucher, Eisen, and Gravelot" and that in his work during the 1770s, "he carried all before him." Despite its title, the second work is actually an excerpt entitled "L'Espérance" from Berquin's larger, two-volume work, "Idylles," also published in 1775. This part of the volume features two domestic scenes after Pierre-Clément Marillier (1740-1808), characterized by Ray as "among the most accomplished and abundant of eighteenth-century illustrators" whose "designs are characterized by grace, liveliness, and firmness of drawing." The lovely and well-preserved binding was executed by Émile Mercier, assistant and then celebrated successor to François Cuzin (d. 1890). The work of Cuzin was so well known and so highly esteemed that he was responsible for establishing what was called the "Cuzin style," and that Cuzin tradition was sustained in its finest form by Mercier, who signed bindings from this period (as here) "Mercier s[uccesseu]r de Cuzin." Best known for his didactic children's books, Arnaud Berquin (1749-91) here renders in verse Rousseau's popular "Pygmalion," but with a twist. Whereas in the original story from Ovid, the gods conspire with Pygmalion to bring his sculptures to life, here our central character animates Galathée without divine aide; also, in contrast to his undiscriminating love as depicted in Ovid, Pygmalion pledges his eternal fidelity to her alone in the present version. Although this is not an impossible book to find, it is rarely encountered with such extensive margins and in a binding as lovely and well preserved as the present one.. 255 x 168 mm. (10 x 6 5/8"). 2 p.l., 18, [2], 8 pp. FIRST EDITION of first work. ELEGANT LATE 19TH CENTURY RED MOROCCO BY ÉMILE MERCIER (stamp-signed "Mercier s[uccesseu]r. de Cuzin" on front turn-in), covers with graceful, undulating dentelle frame formed by volutes, fleurons, flowers, and many small tools, raised bands, spine panels with fleuron centerpieces and volute cornerpieces, gilt titling and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT, six vignettes in the first work engraved by Delaunay and Ponce after Moreau le Jeune, and two vignettes in the second work engraved by Gaucher after Marillier. A Large Paper Copy. Front free endpaper with morocco bookplates of Georges Wendling and Carlo de Poortere. Cohen-de Ricci 140 (second work), 141 (first work). Faint toning throughout (perhaps washed?) but paper still thick and textured, offsetting from leather bookplates on verso of front free endpaper, but A BEAUTIFUL COPY, the binding unworn and glittering with gilt, and the wide-margined interior clean and fresh.Elegantly bound, using massed tools to form undulant dentelles in the style of Derôme, this volume is beautiful inside and out. Evans 1775 - a few trifling spots, the last leaf apparently mounted on a stub, pp. [ii], xix, [20-] 8o, 12mo in 4s (6 1/16 x 3 x 7/8 ins), contemporary half calf, spine gilt, red lettering piece, insect damage to spine, the top of which a little defective, and to corner pieces, withal an attractive copy. Second London edition, though not so named, and rather scarce - 10 copies in ESTC, only 3 of them in the UK; much scarcer than the plethora of Kearsly editions. The proportions of the title-page make it look as if the binder has been unkind to the fore- and lower edges, but the measurements do not compare badly with those given by Cross. The front pate-down has lifted, revealing the contemporary instruction to the binder for 1/2 calf. (Cross, New Ed., 1925, II, p. 274; ESTC N10953)

Letters from Yorick to Eliza; [bound after] Sterne's letters to his friends on various occasions. To which is added, his History of a watch coat, with explanatory notes.

London: [1st work] printed for T. Evans; [2nd] for G. Kearsly; and J. Johnson, 1775 - 2 volumes bound in one, small octavo (155 × 94 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with double gilt rules either side of raised bands, red morocco label, red and blue sprinkled edges. A little rubbed, faint offsetting to some leaves, still a fine copy. Early engraved armorial bookplate (motto "Festina Lente"). Second London edition ("though not so-named" – Cross) of the Letters from Yorick to Eliza. This genuine correspondence between Sterne and his friend Eliza Draper was later imitated in Letters Supposed to have been Written by Yorick and Eliza (1779) by William Combe, who was also the editor of Sterne's Letters to His Friends, a combination of authentic and fabricated correspondence. It contains 12 letters, of which three are probably authentic, and one is from John Eustace to Sterne; the others are by Combe, who thereby established himself as a skilful literary imitator. Sterne had died in 1768; his daughter gathered 114 of his letters in three volumes, published in October the same year as these two less respectable volumes. 1st named, Cross, pp. 606-607.

The Life of Petrarch Collected from the Memoires pour la vie de Petrarch [by Jacques François Paul Aldonce, abbé de Sade ]

London: Printed for James Buckland, 1775 First edition. Contemporary calf, lightly worn at spine extremities. Gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges sprinkled red. . Two volumes, octavo. Engraved frontispiece in Volume I. Light foxing to first and last few leaves of each volume, old ink signature on title-page of Volume I. A very good, clean copy. Susanna Dobson (d. 1795) was the wife of Matthew Dobson, author of several medical treatises. Mrs. Dobson's first book was her Life of Petrarch, which was based in part on de Sade's Mémoires pour la vie de Petrarch. According to Samuel Johnson, 'Mrs Dobson, the Directress of rational conversation, did not translate Petrarch; but epitomised a very bulky French life of Petrarch' (Letters of Samuel Johnson, 249). Sade's work was controversial; he claimed to prove the true identity of Petrarch's Laura and identified her with the Laura de Noves, wife of Hugues de Sade, on the basis of a sonnet found in her tomb in the De la Croix Chapel in Avignon. Dobson's work was very popular, going into a sixth edition by 1805. Roderick Marshall wrote, "this book restored Petrarch, after a hundred and fifty years of banishment, to an active part in English literature:" (Marshall, 124, quoted in DNB). Dobson's other works were less well received, and she was never accepted into the literary circles that she desired to join. Fanny Burney famously referred to her as "coarse, low-bred, forward, self-sufficient, and flaunting."

Institutionum Dn Justiani SS Principia, Libri Quatuor a Domino...

1775. A Manuscript Paraphrase of Justinian's Institutes [Manuscript]. [Roman Law]. [Corpus Juris Civilis]. Institutionum Dn. Justiani SS Principia, Libri Quatuor a Domino Ruffat Editi Anno Domino 1775. Toulouse, 1775. [i], 41, 56, 29, 29, 6 ff. Quarto (9" x 6-3/4"). Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands gilt ornaments and gilt title (reading Instit/ Justin) to spine, edges rouged, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping to head of spine, corners somewhat worn. Moderate toning to interior, text in neat hand. A handsome item. * This appears to be a fair copy of lectures on the Institutes of Justinian or a text that circulated in manuscript. We were not able to locate any information about the author, Ruffat. It is a section-by-section paraphrase of Justinian's text with a table of contents and index. Many sections have cross-references to other sections. A note on the title page states "Ad Usum j. V. Dardignae," likely the owner of the manuscript.
