Course of the River Mississippi from the Balise to Fort Chartres; Taken on an expedition to the Illinois, in the later end of Year 1765

Rob Sater, London 1775 - Map. Hand-colored engraving on two sheets. Image measures 44 1/4 x 14 1/4" Ross's map of the Mississippi is widely regarded as the finest and most detailed map of the river made in the 18th century. Utilizing surveys of the river which the French conducted, Ross synthesized them into a sizable and thorough depiction of the River, and in fact, the first official survey of its lower portion. The map extends from the area of present-day St. Louis down to Fort Balise on the Gulf of Mexico. Descriptive notes provide information on river depth and the surrounding areas and elevations. Surrounding tributaries, rivers, cities, Indian villages and forts are all labeled. Notes from early expeditions as far back as the 16th century are also included. This map is the second edition of the map and is in very good condition, with slight scattered foxing and off-setting. This map is a crisp and lovely representation of the country's most impressive river.

        L'arretin moderne

      - Aux dépens deLa Congrégation de l'Index, A Rome 1775, In-12 (9,5x16,5cm), 230pp. (1) ; 212pp., 2 parties en un volume relié. - Nuova edizione dopo l'originale è apparso allo stesso indirizzo nel 1763. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 263-264.

        De sedibus variolarum (smallpox)

Naples & Bologna: Sancti Thomae Aquinatis, 1775. THIRD EDITION. With 1 plate containing 8 engraved figures. Modern vellum backed marbled boards; very light waterstain to bottom of first few leaves, otherwise text very clean. From the library of Dorothy Schullian. Third edition of Cotugno's investigative report on the localization of variola pustules, the smallpox virus. Cotugno describes the history and pathology of smallpox as well as providing a comprehensive description of the virus and ways to prevent the disfiguration of the face: "He recommended that this part should be frequently bathed with tepid milk and water, under the idea that the continual moisture would be efficacious in opposing the complete development of the pustules" (Olliffe). Despite having been an endemic disease for centuries, smallpox became a true crisis during the second half of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, causing nearly half a million deaths. Cotugno's contribution to the study of the disease came at the cusp of Jenner's research and success with the smallpox vaccine, making this work an important part of the early struggle to eradicate the disease from the modern world. The Italian physician Cotugno (1736-1822) was "an outstanding example of the physician-humanist. He was devoted to books and accumulated a large library; was well versed in art, architecture, numismatics, and antiquities . . . Apart from medicine, in which his reputation was such that, the saying went, no one in Naples could die without a passport from him, Cotugno's greatest contributions to science resulted from his fusing of anatomy and physiology to uncover the secrets of the human body." He traced the course of the nasopalatine nerve, which is responsible for sneezing; described the vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea of the osseou labyrinth of the internal ear; demonstrated the existence of labyrinthine fluid; formulated a theory of resonance and hearing; differentiated between arthritic and nervous sciatica, etc. He "exemplified to many students the true investigative and selfless spirit in anatomy and medicine" (DSB).

        Letters from Yorick to Eliza.

Printed for T. Evans 1775 - a few trifling spots, the last leaf apparently mounted on a stub, pp. [ii], xix, [20-] 8o, 12mo in 4s (6 1/16 x 3 x 7/8 ins), contemporary half calf, spine gilt, red lettering piece, insect damage to spine, the top of which a little defective, and to corner pieces, withal an attractive copy. Second London edition, though not so named, and rather scarce - 10 copies in ESTC, only 3 of them in the UK; much scarcer than the plethora of Kearsly editions. The proportions of the title-page make it look as if the binder has been unkind to the fore- and lower edges, but the measurements do not compare badly with those given by Cross. The front pate-down has lifted, revealing the contemporary instruction to the binder for 1/2 calf. (Cross, New Ed., 1925, II, p. 274; ESTC N10953)

The Life of Petrarch Collected from the Memoires pour la vie de Petrarch [by Jacques François Paul Aldonce, abbé de Sade ]

London: Printed for James Buckland, 1775 First edition. Contemporary calf, lightly worn at spine extremities. Gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges sprinkled red. . Two volumes, octavo. Engraved frontispiece in Volume I. Light foxing to first and last few leaves of each volume, old ink signature on title-page of Volume I. A very good, clean copy. Susanna Dobson (d. 1795) was the wife of Matthew Dobson, author of several medical treatises. Mrs. Dobson's first book was her Life of Petrarch, which was based in part on de Sade's Mémoires pour la vie de Petrarch. According to Samuel Johnson, 'Mrs Dobson, the Directress of rational conversation, did not translate Petrarch; but epitomised a very bulky French life of Petrarch' (Letters of Samuel Johnson, 249). Sade's work was controversial; he claimed to prove the true identity of Petrarch's Laura and identified her with the Laura de Noves, wife of Hugues de Sade, on the basis of a sonnet found in her tomb in the De la Croix Chapel in Avignon. Dobson's work was very popular, going into a sixth edition by 1805. Roderick Marshall wrote, "this book restored Petrarch, after a hundred and fifty years of banishment, to an active part in English literature:" (Marshall, 124, quoted in DNB). Dobson's other works were less well received, and she was never accepted into the literary circles that she desired to join. Fanny Burney famously referred to her as "coarse, low-bred, forward, self-sufficient, and flaunting."

Justiani SS Principia, Libri Quatuor a Domino Ruffat Editi Anno Domino 1775. Toulouse, 1775. [i], 41, 56, 29, 29, 6 ff. Quarto (9" x 6-3/4"). Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands gilt ornaments and gilt title (reading Instit/ Justin) to spine, edges rouged, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping to head of spine, corners somewhat worn. Moderate toning to interior, text in neat hand. A handsome item. * This appears to be a fair copy of lectures on the Institutes of Justinian or a text that circulated in manuscript. We were not able to locate any information about the author, Ruffat. It is a section-by-section paraphrase of Justinian's text with a table of contents and index. Many sections have cross-references to other sections. A note on the title page states "Ad Usum j. V. Dardignae," likely the owner of the manuscript.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Benjamin Faneuil

Circa [1775]. [1775]. - Circa [1775]. [1775]. Good. - sc - [The letter is undated but it was penned circa 1774-75]. Over 85 words penned on a 5 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide sheet of buff watermarked paper, there is a faint outline and remnant of a red wax seal at lower right. Slightly soiled and toned, the letter was once folded and a short tear was repaired with document tape from the verso. Inlaid into a 7-1/2 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide cream paper mat. Good. The Boston merchant Benjamin Faneuil (1701-1785) was the brother of Peter Faneuil who donated Faneuil Hall to Boston. Upon Peter's death, he and his sister Mary inherited a large fortune. He owned a 70 acre estate on Bigelow Hill and in the 1840's Faneuil Street was named for him.The letter, addressed to David Jeffries of the Boston Committee of Donations, is a rather cranky reply to "the Commity wanting my Determination. I am surprised those Gen. Act the part they do you know I was always ready to fulfill my agreement."In response to the Boston Tea Party, the pro-British Parliament closed the city to trading and sent Redcoats to occupy Boston. The Committee of Donations was set up to receive funds from colonists in Massachusetts and from the other colonies for the relief of the citizens of Boston who suffered under the occupation.

PYGMALION: SCENE LYRIQUE DE MR. J. J. ROUSSEAU. [bound with] IDYLLE

Paris; [s. l.]: [s. n.], 1775. FIRST EDITION of first work. Elegantly bound, using massed tools to form undulant dentelles in the style of Derôme, this volume is beautiful inside and out. In addition to the animated and elegant binding, the chief pleasure of the book lies in the engraved text by Drouet and the elegant engravings after Jean-Michel Moreau "le Jeune" (1741-1814). Ray says that the work done by Moreau during the 1760s "showed him to be the equal of the established rococo masters Boucher, Eisen, and Gravelot" and that in his work during the 1770s, "he carried all before him." Despite its title, the second work is actually an excerpt entitled "L'Espérance" from Berquin's larger, two-volume work, "Idylles," also published in 1775. This part of the volume features two domestic scenes after Pierre-Clément Marillier (1740-1808), characterized by Ray as "among the most accomplished and abundant of eighteenth-century illustrators" whose "designs are characterized by grace, liveliness, and firmness of drawing." The lovely and well-preserved binding was executed by Émile Mercier, assistant and then celebrated successor to François Cuzin (d. 1890). The work of Cuzin was so well known and so highly esteemed that he was responsible for establishing what was called the "Cuzin style," and that Cuzin tradition was sustained in its finest form by Mercier, who signed bindings from this period (as here) "Mercier s[uccesseu]r de Cuzin." Best known for his didactic children's books, Arnaud Berquin (1749-91) here renders in verse Rousseau's popular "Pygmalion," but with a twist. Whereas in the original story from Ovid, the gods conspire with Pygmalion to bring his sculptures to life, here our central character animates Galathée without divine aide; also, in contrast to his undiscriminating love as depicted in Ovid, Pygmalion pledges his eternal fidelity to her alone in the present version. Although this is not an impossible book to find, it is rarely encountered with such extensive margins and in a binding as lovely and well preserved as the present one.. 255 x 168 mm. (10 x 6 5/8"). 2 p.l., 18, [2], 8 pp. FIRST EDITION of first work. ELEGANT LATE 19TH CENTURY RED MOROCCO BY ÉMILE MERCIER (stamp-signed "Mercier s[uccesseu]r. de Cuzin" on front turn-in), covers with graceful, undulating dentelle frame formed by volutes, fleurons, flowers, and many small tools, raised bands, spine panels with fleuron centerpieces and volute cornerpieces, gilt titling and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT, six vignettes in the first work engraved by Delaunay and Ponce after Moreau le Jeune, and two vignettes in the second work engraved by Gaucher after Marillier. A Large Paper Copy. Front free endpaper with morocco bookplates of Georges Wendling and Carlo de Poortere. Cohen-de Ricci 140 (second work), 141 (first work). Faint toning throughout (perhaps washed?) but paper still thick and textured, offsetting from leather bookplates on verso of front free endpaper, but A BEAUTIFUL COPY, the binding unworn and glittering with gilt, and the wide-margined interior clean and fresh. Although this is not an impossible book to find, it is rarely encountered with such extensive margins and in a binding as lovely and well preserved as the present one.

        Reliques of Ancient English Poetry:

London: J. Dodsley,, 1775. Consisting of Old Heroic Ballads, Songs, and other Pieces of our earlier Poets. Together with some few of a later Date. 3 volumes, foolscap octavo (172 × 107 mm) Slightly later dark blue straight-grained morocco, titles direct to the spines, flat bands with narrow rope-twist roll, small tool of overlapping dotted circles and quatrefoils to the first and fifth compartments, rolled panel of overlapped alternate dotted and solid circles within a panel of a broad and narrow fillet, dotted edge-tooling to the corners, all edges gilt, narrow foliate roll to the turn-ins, light buff endpapers. Engraved frontispiece to volume I, also an uncalled for engraved author portrait tipped in before the preface, emblematic title-page vignettes to all, each volume with two illustrative section heads, and a similar tail-piece, one page of musical notation. Very light shelf-wear, light browning, occasional foxing, particularly in volume III, an extremely pretty Regency binding in excellent, unrestored state. First published 1765, this a lovely set of the third edition in which Percy "corrected such Mistakes as he had detected Â… [and] also inserted such further Illustrations as had either occurred to himself, or been communicated to him" (Advertisement to the Third Edition). The dedication, though signed by Percy, was written by Samuel Johnson. Johnson had in fact offered to do much more, but the task of helping Percy select and annotate the material fell instead to Shenstone. "Most of Percy's contemporaries welcomed the Reliques as a powerful blast of fresh air. 'Poetry has been absolutely redeemed by it', wrote Wordsworth ('Essay supplementary to the preface', Lyrical Ballads, 1815, 3, 75). Several generations of poets felt its influence: Blake, Coleridge, Keats, Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, and many lesser lights. Scott, both as novelist and ballad-editor, owed a debt to the book, as did figures such as Bürger, Herder, and the Grimm brothers in Germany, and by extension European Romanticism in general" (ODNB).

Prijs: ?3.450,-.

""The Crisis."" IN: The New-England Chronicle: or, Essex Gazette [Newspaper printing]

1775. (AMERICAN REVOLUTION). ""The Crisis."" IN: The New-England Chronicle: or, Essex Gazette. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Printed by Samuel and Ebenezer Hall, in Stoughton Hall, Harvard-College, Vol. VIII. Numb. 375. Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 1775. Folio (10 by 15-1/2 inches), one sheet folded once for four pages. $3750.A 1775 rarity, originally printed the same day as the Battle of Bunker Hill: an American printing of the 12th installment of ""The Crisis"": part of a series of political essays published in London defending American liberty and criticizing royal authority. The present issue reprints the 12th installment of a pro-American publication printed in London entitled ""The Crisis."" The original weekly, published by T. W. Shaw, ran from January 1775 to September 1776 in 91 issues and was notable for its fierce attacks, not only against Parliament but George III as well. (Note: this series is not to be confused with Thomas Paine's similarly titled series of essays, ""The American Crisis"" which ran in newspapers beginning in December 1776 – though he very well may have been inspired by the title.)This installment, subtitled ""BLOOD calls for BLOOD,"" is highly critical not only of Parliament, but of King George III, who had been viewed by American rebels as inherently good, but misled by his ministry: ""No tyrant was ever more despotic and cruel than the present sovereign, who disgraces the seat of royalty in the British empire; no court ever more corrupt than his, and yet. O my countrymen, to this merciless and despotic tyrant, and to his wicked and corrupt ministry, you sacrifice your rights, and yield a PEACEABLE submission."" Recalling the freedoms secured during the Glorious Revolution, the author asks: ""Shall we TAMELY submit tho have those privileges, for which they FOUGHT and FELL, ravished from us by a lawless tribe of men, who calls themselves senators or ministers, and who taking advantage of their price, are laying waste their country, and spreading desolations through the land? Shall it be said in after times, that the year ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED and SEVENTY-FIVE was less glorious than that of SIXTEEN HUNDRED and EIGHTY-EIGHT; and that as the age grew more and more enlightened it became more and more PUSILLANIMOUS. Forbid it Heaven!""""The axe is now at the root of the tree; the overthrow of the constitution is the great design of the King and his ministers, the open and avowed enemies to the natural rights of mankind, who have already sufficiently proved to the world, that they mean the subversion of the universal right of Christians and of subjects. Let those, my countrymen, who plead for tyrants, submit to their power ; but let us esteem our liberty, religion and property, equally with our lives, every man's birthright by nature; no government ever received a LEGAL authority to abridge or take it away; nor has God vested any single or confederated power in any hands to destroy it; and it is in defence of those glorious privileges, these common rights, I have written this paper; and to preserve them unviolated by the polluted hands of lawless tyrants, I would lay down my life, for life is a burthen in any other state than that of FREEDOM.""A slug at the bottom of the left-hand column, added by the editor of the Chronicle, notes, ""'Tis worthy of observation that this CRISIS was printed in London, the Day of the Battle at Bunker's Hill.""In many respects, the language of ""The Crisis"" anticipated Thomas Paine, who took the argument a step further in ""Common Sense,"" in which he categorically rejected royal authority and denied the right of monarchs to rule. Up to this point, many were reluctant to criticize, let alone question, the authority of the king, who was viewed as a basically good man who was misled by his ministers. Essays like this helped prepare the colonies for the next step, forwarded by Paine: the rejection of monarchy, and the goal of American independence.Soon after the republication of this essay in American newspapers, word would arrive that George III had declared the American colonies in a state of ""open and avowed rebellion"" and ordered the military to use their ""utmost endeavors to withstand and suppress such rebellion."" This measure, combined with Paine's arguments for independence issued in January, 1776, convinced many government critics that a separation from the British Empire was the only logical course of action. The paper also includes news of the ongoing campaign against Quebec led by General Richard Montgomery and the recall of Lord Dunmore from Virginia. Contemporary owner signature.Creases, light toning and minor foxing, rough margins, very good condition.
