Judah Restored: a Poem. In Six Books. By Dr. Roberts, of Eton College.

Printed for J. Wilkie; T. Payne; W. Frederic, at Bath; J. Woodyer, at Cambridge; and J. Pote, at Eton., London 1774 - First edition. 'Chief among Roberts's poetical works is his long poem, Judah Restored: a Poem, in Six Books . which was commended by Southey as one of the inspirations behind Thalaba. In his preface . Roberts modestly denies his poem the name of epic, on the grounds that it has no single hero; but its style, structure, and allusions (duly annotated to display the author's considerable learning) mark it as an attempt to write a heroic poem in blank verse on a biblical theme after the example of Milton. The poem relates the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity .' (Oxford DNB). 2 vols, 8vo (179 × 115 mm), pp. xxii, [2], 113, [3]; [4], 151, [5] including half-titles and terminal blanks to both vols; contemporary full red morocco, gilt, sides with floral borders, panelled spines with bird and goblet and urn tools, lettered direct, gilt edges; very slight rubbing with a couple of minor abrasions to the spine; later armorial bookplates (Cecil Roberts); a handsome copy.         THEATRE DE P. CORNEILLE AVEC DES COMMENTAIRES ET AUTRE MORCEAU

1774 . Corneille. (Gravelot, Hubert)illus. THEATRE DE P. CORNEILLE AVEC DES COMMENTAIRES ET AUTRE MORCEAUX INTERESSANTS edited by Voltaire. Geneva, 1774. 8 volumes, quarto, frontispiece and 34 engraved plates after designs by Gravelot. 18th C. leather boards, old reback to spines, new labels. The 1774 reissue of the 1764 Voltaire edition which was in 12 volumes. Internally very fresh. Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) "can be considered the prime shaper of the French theater, While earlier writers had attempted a tragedy of actions, Corneille sought tragedy in the depiction of the human soul, thus substituting an interior drama for the exterior drama of his predecessors." (Benet, Readers Encyclopedia). Hubert Gravelot (1699-1773), after studying with Boucher in Paris, spent several years in dissipated living. Ultimately, however, he went to London, established a reputation as an engraver, and opened an art school in the Strand. He was the first to recognize the talent of Gainsborough, and was a close friend of Hogarth, assisting in the engraving of his early plates. He became one of the foremost caricaturists in England, but upon the outbreak of war between England and France, had to return to Paris. After settling finally in France he illustrated the books upon which his main reputation rests, including the Corneille. His drawings are notable for their finesse, their spirit, and the perfection of their execution. (From Benezit). Gordon Ray devotes a 15 page section of his "Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700-1914" to Gravelot's work as a book illustrator, with entries on books by Gay, Fielding, Boccaccio, Rousseau, Racine and Voltaire, as well as the present work written by Corneiile, of which he says "...Gravelot's harmonious decorative compositions nicely interpreting the crucial moments of the plates, are a delight to the eyes." In a discussion Gravelot's method Ray says: "Gravelot's way of working was highly idiosyncratic. He studied the text he was illustrating with great care, identifying the situations in the story, poem or play which were salient in his author's mind. The he considered how each situation could be presented in the most telling way. Here he employed [three articulated mannequins] each about two feet high and capable of every movement of the body, down to the movement of the fingers of both hands...He had assembled a full wardrobe for

Letters written by the late Right Honourable Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, to his son, Philip Stanhope, Esq.; Late Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Dresden: together with other several pieces on various subjects. Published by Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope, from the originals now in her Possession

      J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, London 1774 - The Third Edition. In Four Volumes (complete set). London, J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1774. Octavo. Collation: Volume I: Engraved frontispiece of Stanhope, XVI, 352 pages / Volume II: (2), 355 pages / Volume III: (2), 376 pages / Volume IV: (2), 364 pages. (Collation complete). Hardcover / Original full calf with gilt lettering on original spinelabels. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Smaller dampstain to lower first and last two pages of two volumes only. The bindings a little shaky but holding. Provenance: From the library of Robert Doyne, with his Exlibris - bookplate to the front pastedown of all four volumes. While he died already in 1733 and these books were published in 1774, it is very likely that the bookplates were still applied by his librarian or family / Sir Robert Doyne (1651-1733) was member of the Irish House of Commons for New Ross from 1692 to 1695, and later a distinguished judge who served as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer from 1695 to 1703 and Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas from 1703 to 1714. In the latter year like all the senior judges in Ireland appointed under Queen Anne he was removed by the new administration; while allegations of corruption were made, the removal seems to have been a simple matter of politics. Although the Irish House of Commons passed a resolution that he had acted corruptly no further action seems to have been taken against him and he lived in peaceful retirement for many years. (Wikipedia) Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield KG PC (22 September 1694 – 24 March 1773) was a British statesman, and a man of letters, and wit. He was born in London to Philip Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Chesterfield, and Lady Elizabeth Savile, and known as Lord Stanhope until the death of his father, in 1726. Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he subsequently embarked on the Grand Tour of the Continent, to complete his education as a nobleman, by exposure to the cultural legacies of Classical antiquity and the Renaissance, and to become acquainted with his aristocratic counterparts and the polite society of Continental Europe. In the course of his post-graduate tour of Europe, the death of Queen Anne (r. 1702–1707) and the accession of King George I (r. 1714–1727) opened a political career for Stanhope, and he returned to England. In the British political spectrum he was a Whig and entered government service, as a courtier to the King, through the mentorship of his relative, James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope, the King's favourite minister, who procured his appointment as Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales. --------------- He was a selfish, calculating and contemptuous man, not naturally generous, and he practised dissimulation ’til it became part of his nature; despite brilliant talents and admirable training, the life of Chesterfield cannot be pronounced a success.[5] His social anxiety and the pains he took to become an orator already had been noticed. Horace Walpole said that he, who had heard the great orators of the time, preferred a speech of Chesterfield to that of any other orator; yet the contemporary opinion was that the Earl of Chesterfield's eloquence did not compare with that of Prime Minister Pitt (the Elder). In that regard, James Boswell reported that the poet Samuel Johnson pointedly said about the nobleman Chesterfield, "This man I thought had been a Lord among wits; but I find he is only a wit among Lords!" As a politician and statesman, his fame rests upon his short, but brilliant, administration of Ireland as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1745-1746). As a courtier, the unrefined Robert Walpole worsted him at the King’s court. Despite being a protector of men of letters, Chesterfield’s want of heart and head in the quarrel over the dedication to A Dictionary of the English Language (1755), inspired the poet Johnson to rewrite the line "Toil, envy, Want, the Patron and the Jayl" (The Vanity of Human Wishes [1749], line 160) in a [Attributes: Hard Cover]

It contains the Chronicles of Dom Henrique, the founder of the Kingdom, until Dom Fernando, 1090-1383. It first appeared in Lisbon in 1600 and was reprinted in 1677.         Carte d'une Partie de la Cote de la Nle. Galles Meridle. depuis le Cap Tribulation jusqu'au Detroit de L'Endeavour, par le Lieut. J.Cook

Paris: Saillant et Nyon, 1774. in fine condition, with good margins.. Engraved map, 295 x 335 mm.; original folds. French edition of Cook's chart, which was published originally for Hawkesworth's official account of the first voyage. This early map details the tracks and anchorages of the Endeavour as the expedition sailed north along the Queensland coastline in 1770. Far North Queensland was a difficult passage for the Endeavour: the ship ran aground on a shoal near the Hope Isles and required numerous repairs at Endeavour River. The expedition's naturalists, Joseph Banks, Herman Spöring and Daniel Solander, used the delay as an opportunity to collect Australian flora for European study. The original manuscript version from which this was prepared, now in the British Library, is reproduced in Historical Records of NSW (1893, plate 6).

Considerations on the measures carrying on with respect to the British colonies in North-America. The second edition. With additions and an appendix relative to the present state of affairs on that continent

London: printed for R. Baldwin, E. & C. Dilly, J. Johnson, Richardson & Co and J. Almon, 1774. Octavo. (8 7/8 x 5 5/8 inches). Half-title. Largely unopened. Stitched self-wrappers. Housed in a blue cloth chemise, within a modern blue morocco-backed slipcase. A very fine untouched copy of the expanded and corrected second edition of this important polemic in support of the American colonies. The second London edition of this work is as rare on the market as the first. Only one copy of first and no copies of the second London edition are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years. The need for the second edition and its 45pp. Appendix are explained in a contemporary review: "The first edition of the considerations which we may venture to ascribe to Mr. M. R---b---n, was hastily printed, and there were in it, besides many errors of the press, considerable omissions, which are supplied in the present edition, to which has been added, a large appendix, relating to events which have happened since" ( Monthly Review ). Matthew Robinson-Morris, the 2nd Baron Rokeby, described in the above quoted Monthly Review as "one of the most candid and best informed of any of the late writers on the interests of Great Britain and her colonies," was a politician and champion of civil liberties who published several pamphlets opposing Lord North's American policy. In this work Rokeby is "strongly critical of Lord North's policy, [but] ... also of Franklin's conduct." (Howes), and identifies "the cause of the present situation of things between the mother country and our colonies of North-America" as having arisen from "our having taxed those colonies without their consent." Franklin is criticized for the inflammatory nature of his writings, which Rokeby compares to Guy Fawkes's gunpowder. Adams, American Controversy 74-68b; Howes R-372; Sabin 72152.

II: 286 pp., [1] f., [6] ff. of original wrappers. 1776: 2 vols. (of 4). I: [1] f., 290 pp., 4 plates II: 310 pp. [1] ff., 3 plates.. 1774–76 In this monthly journal of criticism and original German literature, three monthly issues constituted a volume. Present here for 1774 is vol. 3 (July–September), for 1775 are vols. 1 and 2 (January–June), and for 1776 also 1 and 2. The volumes for 1775 have => retained their original green paper printed wrappers. The plates in the 1776 volumes are essentially frontispieces, being engraved portraits of Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg, Johannes Fichard, Wilibald Pirckhaimer, Sebastian Brandt, Ulrich von Hutten, and Hans Sachs. Political coverage is secondary to the literary and philosophical content here, but => in the 1776 volumes the coverage for England is almost exclusively devoted to America. The journal's editor, Wieland (1733–1813), was a complex figure of the German Enlightenment: a poet, novelist, political theorist, and pedagogue. His critical review/journal was of considerable influence. Provenance: Duplicates (with no markings) of the Harold Jantz Collection (i.e., ex–Duke University). Volume for 1774: Contemporary wrappers of brown paper sprinkled with black; uncut; considerable foxing and some waterstain lines. Volumes for 1775: the two are bound in one volume of brown leather, spine darkened to black and flaking; plain endpapers. Binding shows wear, but text clean. Volumes for 1776: Contemporary calf, gilt spines; covers with some stains and abraded at edges, some distressing of the spines. Interesting "wallpaper" endpapers in blue-green and white of a floral and wave pattern. Good++ condition. Very definitely a mixed, partial set and definitely an interesting array of presentations.

[2], 86 pp. (without final leaf with one erratum).. 1774 Following the ruin of Santiago de los Caballeros by the big earthquake of 1773, the capital of Guatemala was moved first to the little town of Mixco and then later to the location of the present site of Guatemala City. Offered here is the highly important report of the commission headed by Juan González Bustillo on that devastating July, 1773 earthquake: It occupies pp. 1–55 and is followed by "Prosigue la relacion, ô Extracto de todo lo que resulta èvacuado en la Junta general, y demas que se ha tenido presente hasta la conclusion del assunto de translacion, e informe, que debe hacerse à Su Magestad" on pp. 57–86. The careful, lengthy, and contemporary reports present here detail the day's events, give the sequence of the destruction of various buildings and areas of the city, recount salvage and evacuation efforts, etc. The writers (and the citizens) erroneously blamed the nearby volcanos for causing the tremors and quaking, but that was logical at the time. Seeking historical perspective, the commissioners make significant and informed comparisons with earlier earthquakes. => This document is one of the very few printed in the temporary capital of Mixco, a press having been salvaged from the ruins in the former capital. Thus, Mixco was the second city/town to have a press in Central America, and then, for only a short time—approximately two years. In addition to being important for its contents and in the realm of printing history, the González Bustillo report is uncommon: We trace only half a dozen copies in U.S. libraries. Modern full calf, very plain style. Without the final leaf with one erratum on it.

Temporary Acts and Laws of His Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England. [with]:[A Consecutive Run of pre-Revolutionary Massachusetts Assembly Laws, 1763 - 1774]

Boston 1774 - Paginations included in the individual listings below. Early 20th-century three-quarter morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Partial contemporary ownership signature on titlepage, some leaves trimmed close, occasionally touching the last line of text, minor toning and foxing. A Long Run of Significant Colonial Massachusetts Laws An important consecutive run of Massachusetts colonial laws printed just before the outbreak of the American Revolution. The laws here are largely concerned with local issues in New England, including fishing, town meetings, courts, improvements for Faneuil Hall, building another hall at Harvard College, and the like. The great majority of the laws, however, involve raising local funds by taxation and import duties to pay for treasury notes, the public debt, the colonial governor, and more. A 1769 act appoints Robert Pierpont as tax collector for Boston, replacing unsuccessful businessman and tax collector, Samuel Adams, who surrendered the post for "diverse Reasons." Two lengthy acts (1765 & 1766) detail punishments for mutiny and desertion within the Army, but also provide for better payment of the soldiers. Also includes acts relating to Native Americans, namely the 1765 act for "allowing necessary supplies to the Eastern Indians, and for Regulating Trade with them, and preventing Abuses therein."         TEMPORARY ACTS AND LAWS OF HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND. [with]:[A CONSECUTIVE RUN OF PRE-REVOLUTIONARY MASSACHUSETTS ASSEMBLY LAWS, 1763 - 1774]

Boston, 1774. Early 20th-century three-quarter morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Partial contemporary ownership signature on titlepage, some leaves trimmed close, occasionally touching the last line of text, minor toning and foxing. Very good. An important consecutive run of Massachusetts colonial laws printed just before the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Also includes acts relating to Native Americans, namely the 1765 act for "allowing necessary supplies to the Eastern Indians, and for Regulating Trade with them, and preventing Abuses therein."         AN EPISTLE FROM OBEREA, QUEEN OF OTAHEITE, TO JOSEPH BANKS, ESQ. TRANSLATED BY T.Q.Z. ESQ. PROFESSOR OF THE OTAHEITE LANGUAGE IN DUBLIN, AND OF ALL THE LANGUAGES OF THE UNDISCOVERED ISLANDS IN THE SOUTH SEA; AN ENRICHED WITH HISTORICAL AND EXPLANATORY NOTES

London: Printed for John Almon, 1774. Quarto. Modern three quarter straight-grained gilt morocco and cloth, gilt, spine richly gilt. Near fine. "The third edition" of this popular lyrical satire at the expense of the eminent British naturalist, Sir Joseph Banks. Written in imitation of Ovid, the poem pokes fun at Banks and his purportedly amorous shore leave on Tahiti (Banks had a considerable reputation as a ladies' man). The poem masquerades as an affectionate letter from Queen Oberea of Tahiti, who recollects her encounters with Banks. In the text, which incorporates notes from Hawkesworth's account of Cook's first voyage, Banks is cast as Ulysses and the Queen as Calypso. The true author of the work has been identified as Major John Scott-Waring of the East India Company. The first edition of this poem was published in 1773 and a second letter from the Tahitian Queen appeared in 1774. An early bit of Cook-inspired satire, and quite funny indeed. BEDDIE 3915. KROEPELIEN 1166. O'REILLY & REITMAN 9791. HOLMES 11 (1st ed).
