Le Marche aux herbes á Amsterdam / (The Herb Market in Amsterdam)

      1774 - Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Two very light waterstains on bottom edge of sheet. This captivating print is a rare proof impression of Francois Anne David's celebrated print depicting a bustling herb market in Amsterdam. Francois Anne David was a highly regarded engraver working in Paris at the close of the eighteenth century. Born in 1741, David garnered a reputation as a talented portrait engraver. He was the master of J. P. Lebas and a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1802 to 1819. He was an esteemed member of the Academy in Rouen and in Berlin, and his prints can be found in some the most noted European museums. This delightful genre scene is regarded as one of his finest engravings. From the collection of Frederic R. Halsey, a famous New York print collector, who was active during the latter part of the 19th century. Autograph letter signed

      Paris, 1774.
Pasumot, François (1733-1804). Autograph letter signed, in French, to an unidentified correspondent. Paris, January 20, 1774. 4pp. 231 x 177 mm. Minor foxing, one or two tiny marginal tears, but fine otherwise.

A long, densely written (ca. 1500 words) letter from French cartographic engineer and antiquarian François Pasumot, best known today as the co-creator, with Nicolas Desmarest (1725-1815), of the landmark geological "Map of a part of Auvergne, representing the lava flows, where basalt is found in prismatic and round forms . . . ," published as part of Desmarest's Mémoire sur l'origine et la nature du basalt en grandes colonnes polygones (Mémoires de l'Académie royale des sciences 1771 [1774]: 705-775). The Pasumot-Desmarest map "set a new standard for precise graphic representation of the positions of distinct kinds of rock, and played a role in emerging conceptions about geomorphological change and about the distribution of volcanic rocks" (Taylor, p. 129).

Pasumot devoted much of his time to the study of archeology and ancient geography, which he became interested in after the discovery of several ancient monuments in the Auxerre region of Burgundy, where he was then teaching. He was the author of numerous works on antiquarian subjects, the most important being Recueil de mémoires géographiques sur quelques antiquités de la Gaule (1765), in which he determined the topography of the ancient towns of Chora, Bandritum and Gergovia as well as the location of several sections of Roman road. The present letter is representative of Pasumot's activities in this area: In it, Pasumot obliges his correspondent with several long extracts, taking up nearly two pages of the letter, from his then-unpublished "Eloge" to fellow antiquarian the Comte de Caylus (1692-1765), whose seven-volume Recueil d'antiquités égyptiennes, étruscanes, greques et romaines (1752-55) helped lay the groundwork for the development of modern methods of archeology and art history. Pasumot's letter ends with an "Extrait du testament de feu M. le Comte de Caylus: à Paris, le 15 juillet 1765" (Extract from the will of the late M. le Comte de Caylus, Paris, July 15, 1765), and a transcript of the inscription on Caylus's tomb, taken from the July 1769 number of the Journal des Scavants. Pasumot's "Eloge" to the Comte de Caylus, completed in 1766, remained in manuscript until after Pasumot's death, when it was included in the posthumous Dissertations et mémoires sur différens sujets d'antiquité et d'histoire (1810-13) edited by Grivaud de la Vincelle. Taylor, "New light on geological mapping in Auvernge during the eighteenth century: The Pasumot-Desmarest collaborabion," Revue d'histoire des sciences 47 (1994): 129-136.

Folio (366 x 230mm). pp. 129, (1, blank), 1 leaf of 'Entwurf der Tafeln', title with engraved vignette, 2 handcoloured engraved plates of floral detail and 101 fine handcoloured woodcuts on 100 leaves of flowering plants. Contemporary boards. First and only edition, documenting a remarkable survival. The 101 woodcuts are printed from the original blocks of Fuchs 'De Stirpium historia', 1542, the most celebrated herbal ever published. "The only apparent difference is the removal of the (printed) plant-names from the old plates and the printing of new ones at the bottom. It is interesting to compare the handcoloring in the eighteenth-century volume with that in its great sixteenth-century predecessor" (Hunt). In the preface Schinz explains how he discovered the original woodblocks of Fuchs and how they were coloured in the Zurich orphanage. The large woodcuts are beautifully hand-coloured. Christoph Salomon Schinz (1764-1847) was a Swiss physician and botanist at Zürich.//Hunt 640; Nissen BBI, 1761.

The works of colonial Quaker preacher and abolitionist John Woolman (1720-1772), containing his famous journal and early anti-slavery essay, "Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes." & & This copy bears the signature of Mary Olney Brown (1743-1798), second wife of Moses Brown. Moses Brown (1738-1836) was the youngest of the four Brown brothers who helped found Brown University in 1764. Members of a prosperous merchant family of Providence, the Browns financed the disastrous voyage of the slave ship Sally in the 1760s, and eldest brother John Brown remained one of America's most active and notorious slave traders into the 1790s. Moses, however, distanced himself from the slave trade after the Sally affair and further withdrew from the family business in 1773 during a spiritual crisis brought upon by the illness and death of his first wife, Anna. That same year, as he became increasingly involved with the antislavery Quakers of Rhode Island, he renounced slavery entirely and freed the last of his own slaves. Brown was formally accepted as a member of the Friends Meeting in 1774 and went on to follow in the tradition of John Woolman as one of early America's most committed and influential early abolitionists. Mary Olney, a fellow Rhode Island Quaker, married Brown in 1779. EVANS 13782. HOWES W-669, "aa." SABIN 105211.

        LEGENDE DU PLAN DU PORT-LOUIS [manuscript caption title]

      [N.p., but most likely Mauritius. Early to mid- 19th century].. Manuscript map, 18 x 33 inches. On wove paper. Handcolored. Two joined sheets. Old folds. Some ink burn at the neatline, causing separations. Light wear and soiling, a few small tears at edges. Small losses at central fold, affecting a few letters of legend. Very good. Handsome and highly detailed manuscript map of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, done in pen and watercolor, showing the town, surrounding countryside, and the harbor, with many points keyed and identified in the accompanying legend. The plots of land in the town are done in orange and brown, denoting developed and undeveloped parcels. The extensive battlements and defences are each identified. The map comprises two- thirds of the sheet, while the remaining third contains the extensive key. A pencil notation at the bottom of the sheet indicates that the map was done by M. d'Estaing and predates a memoire written by him in 1774. If so, this is almost certainly a later copy of that map. In his bibliography of Mauritius, Toussaint does indicate two maps done by M. d'Estaing in 1774, though neither matches this precisely. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

        An Essay on Circulation and Credit, in four Parts;

      London: For J. Ridley,, 1774. And a Letter on the Jealousy of Commerce. From the French of Monsieur de Pinto. Translated, with Annotations, by the Rev. S. Baggs, M.A. Quarto (270 × 201 mm). Later half morocco and pebbled cloth, spine lettered gilt. Small circular library stamp of the National Liberal Club to title page and two other leaves, with their cancelled exlibris to front pastedown. Front joint spilt at foot, extremities somewhat rubbed. Closed tear to one leaf without loss, lower outer corner of first few leaves chipped; intermittent light spotting and the occasional stain. A very good copy. First edition in English of this "sound and ingenious" (McCulloch) work on revenue and stock exchange transactions. The main premise of Pinto's argument is that the national debt, instead of being a burden, has been the principal source of the wealth and power of England. The work excited much controversy on publication: though purportedly translated into English by Rev. S. Baggs, it was in fact the work of Sir Philip Francis, who published it,with notes, in 1774. This English translation is scarce. Pinto (1715–1787) was born in Amsterdam. He was descended from a Portuguese family and lived for some time at Bordeaux. "He then settled in Holland, where he soon made a large fortune and an equally great reputation. The Stathouder William IV (1747–51) had a very high opinion of his advice, both on administration and finance. He was as tolerant as he was high-minded, and his benevolence won him popularity" (Palgrave).

        "Bell's edition of Shakespeare's plays, as they are now performed at the theatres Royal in London; regulated from the prompt books of each houseÉ"

      London: printed for John Bell É and C. Etherington at York. 1774. "9 volumes, 12mo, each volume with an engraved title page, each play with a separately printed title page and an engraved frontispiece, portraits of Shakespeare and Garrick in volume 1, volume 9 contains a Life of Shakespeare and the poems; contemporary and almost certainly original calf- backed marbled boards, black morocco labels on spines; front cover loose on volume 1; volumes 2 and 3 length of spine with vertical crack; all joints cracked, extremities worn; yet still a compelling set, unrestored. ""All the plays were paginated and printed separately for the use of playgoers ... Like that of 1747, this edition (dedicated to Garrick) was accused of being the worst ever published. To be 'damned with faint praise' sometimes proves the best aid to sales, as in this case. It scored a greater success than any previous issue, one week alone witnessing the sale of 800 sets. Doubtless the beautiful copperplates helped the output considerably"" (Jaggard, p. 504)."

        Recueil de questions, proposées à une société de savants, qui par ordre de sa majesté danoise font le voyage de l'Arabie. traduit de l'allemand.

      S.J. Baalde Amsterdam 1774 - First edition in French, 4to., [iv], xliv, 256, [xxx], 38pp., JAMES BRUCE'S COPY with a few pencil annotations, contemporary tree calf gilt, red morocco lettering piece, an excellent copy. Provenance: James Bruce (1730-1794), explorer, with "Bruce of Kinnaird" bookplate and several pencil annotations; Rosenkilde & Bagger, Cat.200, no.273 (1979); Dr. Bent Juel-Jensen (Amharic book label). The Recueil was published to accompany an edition of Description de l'Arabe by Carsten Neibuhr, issued by the same publishers in 1774. Neibuhr's expedition was organised under the auspices of Frederick V of Denmark. Of the five savants who went on the expedition, some were pupils of Michaelis, the most celebrated orientalist of his day, and it was to him that Frederick turned for a list of subjects to be investigated and questions to be asked. Bruce's explorations in Africa, and in particular the interior of Abysinnia, are described in his celebrated account Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile in the Years (1790). At the finish of his extraordinary voyage "he took ship for Marseilles, where he arrived on 23 March 1773. French savants flocked to meet the man whom most Europeans had long presumed to have vanished in the interior of Africa" (ODNB). The pencil annotations are to sections discussing Abyssinia. Gay 3366. 40 AL(S) - 40 eigenhändige Briefe, meist mit Unterschrift.

      . . Jean Baptiste Biot (1774-1862), French physicist, best known for his work on polarisation of light, associated with Laplace, Arago and Gay-Lussac (with whom he undertook the first balloon ascent for scientific purposes); in 1820 he discovered with Felix Savart the law which is known as "Biot and Savart law". - - Series of 40 autograph letters (10 signed "J.B. Biot", 18 signed "J.B.B.", 12 unsigned) to his "tres chere amie" Sophie Ducrest de Villeneuve, stepdaughter of Georges Cuvier. Paris, Bosquet des Chartreux and no place, between March 5, 1857 and February 25, 1860 (some without date). 102 pages 4to and 8vo, mostly with embossed letterhead "JB". 2 letters lightly stained, otherwise excellent condition. - - A few examples from these charming love letters (of the decent kind, though) in which the famous scientist displays his private life: - - Bosquet des Chartreux, July 20, 1857. ". J 'ai revu aussi Mad. Binet et sa fille, deux personnes d'un caractere adorable, qui ont pour moi une vive affection, comme moi pour elles. J'ai ecrit une lettre de remerciement . a la belle Madame De Rouge; et apres quelques moments passes a la seance de l'academie des sciences, j'irai tout a l'heure rendre visite a d'anciennes amies du faubourg St. Germain . je viens d'achever d'imprimer la notice que j'ai ecrite sur Couchy" (the late mathematician Augustin Louis Couchy), ". j'ai actuellement dans les mains des recherches sur l'ancienne astronomie egyptienne qui ont pour moi beaucoup d'attrait ." - - Paris, August 28, 1858. Biot writes that he has interrupted a work on an essay which he had to read at the Academy soon (and which he could not expect to finish in time), just to write to her, and to praise the courage which she had shown in a certain night: "... Cette attention de votre part m'a bien touche ... Je n'ai pas pu vous en remercier plutot, m'etant plonge, trop inconsiderement, dans un travail qui devait etre lu lundi prochain a l'academie mais, reconnaissant l'impossibilite ou je suis de le terminer pour ce jour la comme je m'y etais engage, je quitte mon devoir pour mon plaisir, et je me mets a vous ecrire. Votre description de cette nuit, de vos dangers , de vos craintes, est effrayante; et il faut tout votre courage, pour avoir eu la force d'en epargner l'angoisse a ma vive amitie ... " - - (Madame de Villeneuve is at a Spa which seems to bore her, and Biot tells her, there was no reason to change it with Paris: Paris is deserted, you even would not find the ennoying people to entertain you ... the heat which pressed us was followed by streaming rain on our heads, and there is nothing to distract us, but the news about hurricanes, earth quakes and other disasters ... if there was not the war in China and the transatlantice cable, we would die from boredom.) - - 5.II.1859. Biot feels depressed from an unpleasant winter, concerns about his grand daughter, and boring academic commissions. ". La fatigue d'esprit que je ressentais depuis plusieurs mois, s'est aggravee par mille incidens reunis: La tristesse de l'hyver sombre et pluvieux; le manque des promenades; des inquietudes serieuses sur la sante de ma petite fille Mad. L'AN DEUX MILLE QUATRE CENT QUARANTE. RæVE S'IL FóT JAMAIS. Nouvelle Edition, Revue & Corrigée par l'Auteur, qui a Jugé à Propos de Refondre le Chapitre de la Bibliothèque du Roi

      A Londres [i.e. Paris],. 1774. Octavo, pp. [iii-iv] v-xii 1-410,. early three-quarter black leather and marbled boards, all edges stained yellow.. Binding rubbed at edges, corner tips a bit worn, old repair to upper. right corner of title leaf, some damp staining to the text block,. mostly to upper margins of several signatures, most noticeably. signatures C and Y, a very good copy with a fairly clean interior. A. scarce edition of this seminal book. (#90772). First printing of the second edition, revised and corrected. "This first utopia set in future time was one of the eighteenth century's most successful books. It was immediately banned in France, put on the Inquisition's list of forbidden books in 1773, and condemned in Madrid in 1778 as a blasphemous work whose distributors, if discovered, would be fined five hundred ducats and sentenced to six years in prison. THE YEAR 2440 had eleven editions in French between 1771 and 1799, as well as two English translations and translations into Dutch, Italian, and German. Investigation of its printing history leads Everett Wilkie to conclude that 'there were 18,000 copies in print in three languages by the end of 1772 and 30,000 copies by the end of 1782, at which point it had spread thoroughly over Europe ... 63,000 copies had been printed by Mercier's death' in 1814. The book was less successful across the Atlantic, but a 1795 Philadelphia edition was 'nevertheless, the first utopian novel published in North America.' George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned copies of The Year 2440." - Alkon, Origins of Futuristic Fiction, p. 117. "... although the earliest specimens of futuristic fiction were in English, the glory of discovering the true potentialities of the genre belongs to the French -- to Sebastien Mercier who established the first satisfactory model of the new fiction ... The utopian prophecy of L'AN 2440, the first influential story of the future in world literature, became one of the most widely read books in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The translations into Dutch and German, the English and American editions, and the many imitations show how Mercier beguiled his readers in two continents with the vision of a dream come true." - Clarke, The Pattern of Expectation 1644-2001, p. 23. Mercier's bibliographer, Everett C. Wilkie, Jr., states that only a few editions of this work are of textual importance: the first edition of 1771, this edition of 1774, the 1786 edition in 3 volumes, and the one of An VII (1798). See Alkon, Origins of Futuristic Fiction, esp. pp. 117-29. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 1-29; (1981) 1-123; (1987) 1-63; (1995) 1-63; and (2004) II-757. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1476.
