        of Johann Christoph von Selpert.

Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Hamburg, Göttingen, Lausanne, Leipzig, Meißen, Regensburg, Zurich, 1768-1774. - Oblong 8vo (200 x 118 mm). 86 ff. with 93 entries, 5 full-page illustrations (1 washed pencil drawing, 4 gouaches), and a watercolour flower in the text. Contemp. vellum with coloured lacquer decorations to covers and spine. Bronze varnish paper; edges goffered and gilt. Uncommonly beautiful friendship album belonging to the law student Johann Christoph von Selpert (d. 1817), later councillor and delegate of various cities at the Regensburg Imperial Diet. Among the various contributors are many important scholars of the late 18th century, including Moses Mendelssohn, Johann Bernhard Basedow, Salomon Gessner, A. F. Büsching, and Christian August Clodius. - The earliest contributors are mostly Regensburg relatives of Selpert's, including Johanna Elisabetha née Harrer, wiife of the local merchant and freemason Ludwig Leonhard Schkler (1738-1807), but also the 13-year-old Benedikt Friedrich Springer (1756-1803), later a preacher of note. Soon, more important personages are added whom Selpert met during his University years at Leipzig: the Rosicrucian Adam Michael Birkholz (1746-1818), who published under the pen name "AdaMah Booz", the preacher and hymn poet Johann Gottfried Schöner (1749-1818), the later law professor Christian Rau (1744-1818), as well as the historian Johann Gottlob Böhme (1717-80), the law scholar J. H. Wilmerding (1749-1828), later the mayor of Braunschweig, the educator Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724-90), the poet and philosopher Christian August Clodius (1737-84), the theologian and classical scholar Johann August Ernesti (1707-81), director of Leipzig's Thomasschule, and the city captain Johann Christian Krappe (1709-91). In Berlin, Moses Mendelssohn signs himself (in Hebrew) on 25 Iyyar 5532 (i.e., 28 May 1772), as does the geographer Anton Friedrich Büsching (1724-93); a Hamburg contribution is by the Linné student Johann Christoph von Heidenstam (1739-74); others, from Göttingen, are by Johann Heinrich Prieser (1749-1801) and Johann Jakob Besserer (1753-1834), both of whom soon would make their careers in Augsburg as concillors and even as mayor. Further journeys lead Selpert to Dresden, Meissen, and Bremen. Contributions from Lausanne (1773) include the physician and chemist Heinrich Struve (1751-1826), the naturalist Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach (1748-1839), and the jurist Samuel Porta (1716-1790); in Zurich the poet Salomon Gessner (1730-88) signs, as does the physician and writer Johann Kaspar Hirzel (1725-1803). - Selpert's coat of arms (an ink drawing on strong wove paper) is inserted loosely. A title page and some four leaves were removed from the album, apparently at a very early date. Spine somewhat sunned. A complete list of all contributors is available upon request.         The Temple Builder's Most Useful Companion

1774. OVERTON, Thomas Collins. The Temple Builder's Most Useful Companion. 15, [5] pp. Illustrated with frontispiece and 50 engraved plates, of which one is folding, all engraved by R. Pranker. 8vo., 260 x 175 mm, bound in original blue wrappers, preserved in a new quarter morocco brown folding box. Uncut, partially unopened. London: I. Taylor, 1774. |~||~||~||~||~| The 50 numbered engraved plates comprising the Temple Builder's Companion show elevations and plans for a series of eighteenth-century garden "follies," Overton's "designs for small houses, cottages, pavilions, and other garden structures in a Palladian mode, but including battlemented and 'gothick' forms" (Millard, p. 181), a number of which were adapted from Batty Langley's Ancient Architecture Restored of 1742 and others from Gibbs. The work was first published in 1766 under the title Original Designs for Temples and republished the same year under the current title, as a reduced and less expensive pattern book with an added frontispiece. This is a reissue by I. Taylor, successor to the original publisher Henry Webley, with the same content but excluding the list of subscribers (which included Henry Hoare and Paul Methuen, both notable patrons of local buildings). Numbered explanations of each illustration precede the plates, all engraved by R. Pranker after Overton's designs. The frontispiece, of two figures beside elevated statues of Palladio and Inigo Jones in an arcadian landscape, was engraved by Pranker after Samuel Wale. Little is known about the author Thomas Collins Overton (b. 1734), who probably came from a family of land surveyors based in Devizes; indeed, three of the present plates depict structures from that part of England. With minor foxing, wrappers faded and lightly stained, still a good copy of this scarce book, including a four-page publisher's list of other "Books in Architecture" sold by I. Taylor in Holborn. Millard, British 47 (second edition, note). Harris 610. ESTC N37747.

Les Loisirs du Chevalier d'Eon de Beaumont

Thirteen volumes. 8vo., 205 x 122 mm, bound in contemporary French mottled calf, flat spines gilt, contrasting lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, red edges. Amsterdam: [s.n.], 1774. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this collection of writings on the geography, politics and government, commerce, economic conditions, ecclesiastical and political history of Europe and North America, written by the sexually ambiguous author, Charles d'Éon de Beaumont (1728-1810), known generally as the Chevalier (or Chevalière) d'Éon, who had an active career as a soldier and diplomat. Curiously, it was never entirely clear whether he was a man or a woman; he was employed as a secret agent by Louis XV at the court of Elizabeth of Russia and later in London; at the Russian court, he assumed the manner and dress of a woman. When d'Éon returned to France, he presented himself at Versailles in the uniform of a captain of dragoons; he was immediately required "to resume the garments of his sex." The queen ordered him a complete set of women's clothes, and the Chevalier spent the next two years at court dressed as a female. The author lived for more than thirty years as a kind of public curiosity. Apparently d'Éon did not wear women's clothes in London, where he spent the last years of his life, although the question of his sex became a matter of intense speculation and the object of huge wagers. Only after his death was it discovered once and for all that he was in fact a man. In this copy the spine labels on vols. IV and XII are reversed. Exceptionally well-preserved and attractive French eighteenth-century bindings. Echeverria & Wilkie, French Image, 774/10. Goldsmiths'-Kress library of economic literature, no. 11086. Cioranscu 27698. See Leigh, Catalogue of the Christie Collection, John Rylands University Library, Manchester.

1774. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Two very light waterstains on bottom edge of sheet. This captivating print is a rare proof impression of Francois Anne David's celebrated print depicting a bustling herb market in Amsterdam. Francois Anne David was a highly regarded engraver working in Paris at the close of the eighteenth century. Born in 1741, David garnered a reputation as a talented portrait engraver. He was the master of J. P. Lebas and a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1802 to 1819. He was an esteemed member of the Academy in Rouen and in Berlin, and his prints can be found in some the most noted European museums. This delightful genre scene is regarded as one of his finest engravings. From the collection of Frederic R. Halsey, a famous New York print collector, who was active during the latter part of the 19th century.         Discurso sobre el fomento de la industria popular

Antonio de Sancha, Madrid 1774 - 8vo. (4 ff.), cxcviii pp. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, evidence of two pair of ties. Text very crisp & clean. TRUE FIRST EDITION of this crucial work on reforming the Spanish economy, issued anonymously by the Conde de Campomanes, who "probably influenced Spanish economic thought of his time more than any other writer" (La Force p. 156). The present work is described as: "'one of the fundamental books of the Spanish Enlightenment' (F. Venturi, Italy and the Enlightenment. Studies in a Cosmopolitan Century, p. 274). * Campomanes advocates household industry - mainly textiles - rather than large-scale industry, so that people will not have to move from small towns and farms. In order to spread the knowledge that would make such industry possible, he strongly advocates the formation of local economic societies. Campomanes analyzes the natural resources, existing industry, and available manpower of each Spanish province (section X); he also makes sociological observations on what Spaniards consume and why. When the Discurso appeared, the King ordered copies sent to all local governing officials and bodies of Spain and to bishops for distribution among the clergy. The work was supplemented in 1775 by "Discurso sobre la educacion popular de los artesanos y su fomento." Carpenter, in discussing why this work did not qualify for the Baker Library's exhibition of economic bestsellers printed before 1850, speculates "[Campomanes] was translated into Dutch, German, Italian and Portuguese, and ordinarily, such widespread translating indicates a considerable number of editions in the original. Yet, in this case there appears to have been only one. Perhaps, as a major figure in the government of Charles III, his prominence led to very large initial edition" (Economic Bestsellers Before 1850, p. 2). In "Additions and Corrections" Carpenter notes that according to Antonio Conca, the translator of the 1787 Italian edition (pp. ii-iii), there were two Spanish editions dated 1774. The first consisted of 5,000 copies; the second, of 40,000 copies, which the government distributed to parishes throughout the country. Moreover, Carpenter compared the two editions at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, finding them to be from different settings of type, but with the same pagination and text on the title page, distinguishable as follows: in the true first edition on p. iv the last line begins "nado" not "disciplinado"; while on p. cxcviii the first line begins "dad economica" instead of "cada provincia". The present copy contains both "points" indicating that it belongs to the original edition. * Because Campomanes (1723-1803) was a leading minister of D. Carlos III, his economic philosophy, of the liberal, mercantilist school, had an enormous impact on Spain's economy. Among his reforms were free trade with America, tax exemptions for many raw materials, duties on more imports, and the creation of a national bank. Campomanes' achievements were widely recognized abroad: for instance, Benjamin Franklin welcomed him as a member of the American Philosophical Society merely on the basis of what had been printed about him in the newspapers. Campomanes also wrote on a wide range of political, legal, and historical matters. * REFERENCES: Palau 273681.         Tryon County Legal Debt Document Signed by Hendrick Frey, Judge

Tryon County, NY, 1774. . DS, 2pp, 7.75 x 12.75 in., Johnstown, Tryon County, NY, 15 Dec. 1774 (Fifteenth year of the reign of King George the Third). Legal document regarding a debt, signed by Hendrick Frey, Judge.Condition: Folds and toning as expected otherwise very good. All mounted on larger sheets with cut-outs so both sides visible. John, patriot and Hendrick (Heindrick) Frey, loyalist of Canajoharie, brother against brother in the American Revolution.Colonel Hendrick (Heindrick) Frey (1734?-1827) and his brother, Major John Frey (1740-1833), were the grandsons of Heinrich Frey, a native of Zurich, who settled on the Mohawk in the late seventeenth century. Major John Frey became an active and dedicated patriot. He served as Tryon County's first elected sheriff and on its important committees of correspondence and public safety, was wounded at Oriskany, and later was captured by Indians and carried off into Canada. His older brother, Hendrick, fell heir to the family estates at Canajoharie and married the sister of Nicholas Herkimer, the hero of Oriskany. He fought beside Sir William Johnson in the French wars and later became Sir William's close friend and executor. When Tryon County was formed in 1772, Hendrick Frey was its first representative to the provincial legislature. With the outbreak of the Revolution, however, he tried to remain neutral, but as an intimate of the Johnsons, he soon fell under the suspicions of his Whig neighbors. Frey was arrested, brought before the Tryon County Committee of Public Safety (of which his brother was a member), and then jailed at Albany. In 1777, he was released in the custody of his friend General Philip Schuyler and allowed to return to Canajoharie. But rumors again began to swirl about his head. "People of all sorts" were seen about his grist mill on Canajoharie Creek and he was cited by the Tryon Committee as being "a most dangerous Person." Shortly thereafter Hendrick Frey was rearrested and sent to a Hartford, Connecticut jail where he remained until 1783. Cooper long remembered "Old Frey with his little black peepers, pipe, hearty laugh, and broken English...." [James Fenimore Cooper, The Letters and Journals of James Fenimore Cooper, edited by James Franklin Beard (Cambridge, 1964), 1II, 41]. A third brother, Bernard, or Barnard (?-1812), apparently was an active Loyalist who went to Oswego with Guy Johnson in 1775 and later served with Butler's corps of Tory rangers. This information on the Freys has been obtained from the following sources: S. L. Frey, "An Old Mohawk Valley House," The Magazine of American History, VIII (May, 1882), 337-345; Ernest Greene, "Frey," Ontario Historical Society Papers and Records, XXXIII (1939), 45-74; Nelson Greene, The Story of Old Fort Plain and the Middle Mohawk Valley (Fort Plain, New York, 1915), pp. 37-39, 159; Public Papers of George Clinton (Albany, 1900), II, 229, 285, 287, 330-331, 742-743.

The Gentleman's Magazine: and Historical Chronicle. For the Year MDCCLXXIV [1774] [through] MDCCLXXXIII [1783] [Ten Volumes in Eleven]

London: Printed at St. John's Gate for D. Henry, 1774-1783. Full modern brown calf, five raised bands, red morocco spine labels, gilt titles and rules, in period style. Beautifully bound, with new endpapers, some leaves closely trimmed with occasional but minimal grazing of a few letters, numerals added to volume titles, occasional institutional ownership stamps mostly to versos of volume titles, a few small chips and tears on leaves, one plate worn through the neat line, one later plan unrelated to America in facsimile, a few with tears at the folds, but overall a magnificent set spanning the American Revolutionary War from start to finish. 8vo. Illus. with 164 engraved portraits, figures, maps, and plans (75 folding, 1 facsimile) plus numerous in text drawings. Descriptions of every major event of the rebellion, every major battle of the ensuing war, every important letter, every major speech in Parliament, every major document including the Declaration of Independence. "Cave began the Gentleman's Magazine in January 1731, thus giving birth to one of the major publishing forms of the modern era, the magazine. It began modestly as a digest of London newspapers and periodicals for country customers (an orientation signaled in Cave's editorial pseudonym, Sylvanus Urban), but it went on to prosper and survive until 1922." (ODNB). Still using the name Silvanus Urban, Henry David, who succeeded as editor on Cave's death in 1754, and who was a first cousin of Patrick Henry of Virginia and a friend of Benjamin Franklin, added a special section starting in August 1774, entitled "Proceedings of the American Colonists, since the Passing of the Boston Port-Bill" which provided substantial coverage of the build-up and progress of the American Revolution with items previously published in the official government paper, letters from British officials in America, and reports from American newspapers and other sources, all with remarkable impartiality. Its influence on periodicals, newspapers, and magazines in general, and the British public's understanding of the American war in particular, cannot be overestimated. Beyond the American Revolution, the magazine reported extensively during these years on other issues and news concerning the British public, both domestically and internationally, from explorations, battles, public works, science, literature, philosophy, all providing a detailed picture of Great Britain and her people during this great upheaval. Each volume is difficult to find, and Revolutionary sets are rarely come by. To which is added, a memoir on the corn trade: drawn up and laid before the commissioners of the treasury. By Governor Pownall. [With:] [Political Arithmetic. Part II. Containing considerations on the means of raising the supplies within the year. Occasioned by Mr Pulteney's pamphlet on that subject.] Two parts in 1 volume, octavo (210 × 128 mm), pp. xii, [4], 366 + advertisment leaf; 78 + advertisment leaf. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked in calf, original calf corners, spine ruled and direct lettered gilt. From the library of Arthur Young, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Library stamp of the Royal Agricultural Society of England to title verso and final text leaf. Corners worn, with loss of leather exposing the boards underneath. Bound without the half-title and title to the second part. Occasional light spotting, else a very good copy. First edition, the most complete statement of Young's general economic philosophy, this is "one of his best works, and indeed his reputation as an economist rests primarily upon it" (Gazley). Young considered the book one of his best, and it immediately received several translations into European languages. In it he discusses a wide range of politico-economic subjects, including taxation, prices, food, population and the balance of trade. He further devotes a considerable section of the book to an "examination of false propositions" including a "reply to de Quesnay's Maximes in the Encyclopédie". Part II, published in 1779, is extremely rare.
