ANNO REGNI GEORGII III. DECIMO QUARTO. CAP. LIV. AN ACT FOR THE BETTER PROVIDING SUITABLE QUARTERS FOR OFFICERS AND SOLDIERS IN HIS MAJESTY's SERVICE IN NORTH AMERICA [caption title].

London. 1774. - [2],1251-1252pp. Folio. Two leaves, in three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Near fine. The Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773 unified both the protesting colonists in America and the forces of reaction in Great Britain in their respective positions. News of it arrived in London in January, 1774. From the point of view of the English government of Lord North, which commanded a firm majority in Parliament, the Tea Party represented an outrageous act of defiance which must be quashed. As soon as news arrived in London, legislation was prepared to punish the defiant colonists and bring the colonies, especially Massachusetts, firmly to heel. Their goal was to punish Massachusetts for the Tea Party and extend direct Royal control at the expnse of popular liberty. Between March 31 and June 22, 1774, five acts were passed which became known collectively as the Coercive or Intolerable Acts. As news of each reached America, with troops to enforce it, a new spirit of defiance was kindled. Among these was the Quartering Act, passed June 2, 1774 and aimed specifically at Massachusetts. It allowed for the lodging and billeting of British soldiers with families and on private property. This shifted some of the cost of maintaining an army in the colony to the colonists, besides the difficulty of having soldiers in homes. Of all the acts, this directly affected the most people. The Intolerable Acts brought strong and immediate reaction throughout the colonies. The most important was the calling of a Continental Congress, first proposed by Rhode Island on May 17, four days after General Gage took over the government of Massachusetts as a Military Governor. A key step on the road to Revolution.

        A Political Survey of Britain.

for the author; and sold by Richardson and Urquhart, and others, London 1774 - Two volumes, large quarto, upper joints of both volumes just starting, a little inoffensive wear to the extremities; yet a fine set in magnificent tree calf, flat spines featuring gilt foliate ornament with green and crimson morocco labels. Redolent of the 1780s in its strictly contemporary binding, Campbell's Political Survey describes the England that the First Fleet left behind.More than dry political economy, the survey contains a wealth of information regarding the trades, agriculture, transportation, fisheries, seaports, markets and natural resources of Britain. The author was appointed the King's agent for the province of Georgia in 1765; accordingly this survey is rich with reference to the American and West Indian colonies (although the possibility of revolution is conspicuously absent). The subtitle itself says much of the author's aspirations for national self-sufficiency: the book is 'intended to shew That we have not as yet approached near the Summit of Improvement, but that it will afford Employment to many Generations before they push to their utmost Extent the natural advantages of Great Britain.'This set, with its elegant binding, bears the bookplates and ownership signature of Alexander Allardyce (c.1743-1801), a Scottish slaver who made his fortune in the West Indies. Upon his return home, Allardyce entered parliament and spent lavishly on the improvement of Dunottar House near Aberdeen and its magnificent walled garden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Earlier editions of Frankli's electricity were published in separate parts. "The most dramatic result of Franklins researches was the proof that lightning is really an electrical phenomenon. Others had made such a suggestion before him--even Newton himself--but it was he who provided the experimental proof. In 1752 he flew a kite in a thunderstorm and attached a key to its string. From this he collected electric charges in a Leiden jar and showed that atmospheric and frictional or machine-made electricity are the same. His reputation as a scientist was immediately established by the publication of the results of his researches in a series of letters addressed to Peter Collinson, a London merchant and naturalist." (PMM). The first edition was published between 1751 and 1754. PMM 199 (1st Ed); Sabin 25506; Waller 11340; Wellcome III, p.62. VG-, a few very old repairs necessitated by extremely thin paper.         Political arithmetic Containing observations on the present state of Great Britain; and the principles of her policy in the encouragement of agriculture Addressed to the Oeconomical Societies established in Europe To which is added, a memoir on the corn trade: drawn up and laid before the commissioners of the Treasury By Governor Pownall

London: W. Nicoll, 1774. 8vo, xii + (4) + 366 + (2)pp, complete with the final leaf of advertisements, contemporary mottled calf, spine fully gilt with raised bands and gilt label, joints with some wear and cracking, but still a good, sound, binding. A very good copy indeed from the late 18th century library of John Cator* with his armorial bookplate.> First edition. A second volume was published in 1779 but the two volumes are rarely found together. The 2nd volume was clearly an afterthought unplanned in 1774. Kress 7066. Goldsmiths 11103. Higgs 5881. Einaudi 6093. Young's Political Arithmetic> is probably his most obvious excursion into economic theory (Young called it 'one of my best works'). It was largely motivated by his enduring drive to increase the profitability and product of agriculture. Nevertheless there is much here on wider economic issues; Young enthusiastically, for example, tackled what he labelled as 'false propositions'. Among these he included matters such as taxes on consumption, Quesnay's Maxims> in the Encyclopedie>, population, 'false ideas of the French writers', and so forth. The book was translated into several European languages. John Cator (1728-1806) was a wealthy timber merchant and landowner and Member of Parliament. Among other things, he was responsible for the layout of much of the area around Blackheath and Beckenham (Kent), which he transformed into a significant suburban town with opulent houses situated along wide tree-lined avenues.

Autographed Endorsement Signed "Jas. Warren Sheriff" on the back of a partly printed document signed

Plymouth, 1774. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 6.75 x 8.25 inches, Boston, February 18, 1774 -- a warrant requesting that the Sheriff of Suffolk & Plymouth Counties attach the property of certain individuals, and to assure that said persons appear before the Court of Common Pleas safely. On the back, Warren responds to the warrant which he has executed: "Plymouth, March 7th, 1774, explaining in detail that he has attached a large piece of land, including the boundaries and related landmarks, and requesting a Sheriffs fee of 8 pounds / 6 shillings." Ironically, on the opposite fold from Warren's endorsement appears a clerk's notation: "Mr. Officer, Attach sufficient - or hold to Bail by order of John Adams," written just two months after the Boston Tea Party! Uniformly toned with weak folds including one that has been lightly reinforced with archival tape. The endorsement by James Warren is boldly written, taking up one complete panel, 3 x 6.5 inches, with a dark clear signature. An exceptional association piece in very good(-) condition. American patriot and arguably one of the most important figures in the instigation of hostilities between the Colonies and the British Government. He was one of the founders of the Sons of Liberty, fought at Bunker Hill, Major General of the State Militia, a planner of the Boston Tea Party, and lifelong friend of John Adams. In addition, he was a correspondent and adviser to Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

First and only editions of the Dutch translation by Jac. van Ekers of a description of Arabia, Egypt and the Middle East (ad 1) and an account of a voyage to Arabia and surrounding countries (ad 2). Both works were originally written by the Danish traveler and surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) and published in German, in Copenhagen in 1772 under the titles: Beschreibung von Arabien, and Reisenbeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Lander. Both works were also translated into French and English. In 1760 Niebuhr was invited to join a scientific expedition to Egypt. Other members of the expedition were Friedrich Christian von Haven (a Danish linguist and orientalist), Christian Carl Kramer (a Danish physician and zoologist), Georg Baurenfeind (an artist from southern Germany), Berggren (a Swedish ex-soldier) and Pehr Forrskal (a Swedish botanist). In January 1761, the expedition sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Alexandria, Egypt. The members of the expedition spent a year in Egypt, visiting Suez and Mount Sinai. They left Suez in October 1762 and sailed to Yemen. In May 1763 they reached Mocha where Von Haven and Forrskal died from malaria. In August 1763 Baurenfeind and Berggren died, followed by Kramer in February 1764. Niebuhr was the only one left to continue the expedition. In 1764, he explored India, sailing from Bombay to Muscat, as well as Shiraz, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, and Aleppo. He spent some time in Persepolis in 1765 where he has made very detailed drawings and maps, which were used for more than a hundred years. In 1766, he explored Palestine before finally returning to Copenhagen on 20 November 1767, after a journey of seven years. When he returned to Copenhagen the Swedish government warmly welcomed him and paid the costs of engraving the plates to illustrate his accounts of the voyage. Both works are lavishly illustrated, having together 2 large maps of Yemen and 148 beautifully engraved maps, plans and views of all the regions Niebuhr visited. Location/localizacao: PCS

II: 286 pp., [1] f., [6] ff. of original wrappers. 1776: 2 vols. (of 4). I: [1] f., 290 pp., 4 plates II: 310 pp. [1] ff., 3 plates.. 1774–76 In this monthly journal of criticism and original German literature, three monthly issues constituted a volume. Present here for 1774 is vol. 3 (July–September), for 1775 are vols. 1 and 2 (January–June), and for 1776 also 1 and 2. The volumes for 1775 have => retained their original green paper printed wrappers. The plates in the 1776 volumes are essentially frontispieces, being engraved portraits of Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg, Johannes Fichard, Wilibald Pirckhaimer, Sebastian Brandt, Ulrich von Hutten, and Hans Sachs. Political coverage is secondary to the literary and philosophical content here, but => in the 1776 volumes the coverage for England is almost exclusively devoted to America. The journal's editor, Wieland (1733–1813), was a complex figure of the German Enlightenment: a poet, novelist, political theorist, and pedagogue. His critical review/journal was of considerable influence. Provenance: Duplicates (with no markings) of the Harold Jantz Collection (i.e., ex–Duke University). Volume for 1774: Contemporary wrappers of brown paper sprinkled with black; uncut; considerable foxing and some waterstain lines. Volumes for 1775: the two are bound in one volume of brown leather, spine darkened to black and flaking; plain endpapers. Binding shows wear, but text clean. Volumes for 1776: Contemporary calf, gilt spines; covers with some stains and abraded at edges, some distressing of the spines. Interesting "wallpaper" endpapers in blue-green and white of a floral and wave pattern. Good++ condition. Very definitely a mixed, partial set and definitely an interesting array of presentations.

I: [1] f., 290 pp., 4 plates II: 310 pp. [1] ff., 3 plates.. 1774?-76 In this monthly journal of criticism and original German literature, three monthly issues constituted a volume. Present here for 1774 is vol. 3 (July?-September), for 1775 are vols. 1 and 2 (January?-June), and for 1776 also 1 and 2. The journal's editor, Wieland (1733?-1813), was a complex figure of the German Enlightenment: a poet, novelist, political theorist, and pedagogue. His critical review/journal was of considerable influence. Provenance: Duplicates (with no markings) of the Harold Jantz Collection (i.e., ex?-Duke University).

A Father's Legacy to his daughters ?the fourth edition

London: for W, Strahan [etc.], 1774. Fourth edition. Pp. [i]-x[-xii]; 1-132. Half-title. 1 vols. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco lettering-piece to spine. Provenance: P. Johnston, Lincoln's Inn (inscription). Fourth edition. Pp. [i]-x[-xii]; 1-132. Half-title. 1 vols. 12mo. An excellent copy of an unusually early edition of this best-seller: but a work that did not find favour with Mary Wollstonecraft. The author, Dr. John Gregory, served as professor of medicine at the universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. The present work was written in 1761 after the death of his wife, but was not published until 1774, after Dr. Gregory's own death. It proved to be his most popular book, going through a great many editions (at least six appeared in 1774). It served as a sort of memorial to his wife, and he included his wife's thoughts about the education of their two daughters, the eldest of whom was Dorothea Gregory (d. 1830). "He may have incorporated the advice given him by his friend and celebrated bluestocking Elizabeth Montagu, who approved his pattern of educating the girls 'in a philosophical simplicity'" (L. Hunt. Montagu MSS, MO 3183, Elizabeth Montagu to Elizabeth Carter, 9 September 1766). "This little work was not intended for publication, but was to be given to his daughters after his death. However, it was published by his son James in 1774 and was an immediate success, running into many editions and translations. The work contains advice on religion and moral conduct, female friendship, and behaviour towards the opposite sex, principally regarding love and marriage. Deploring the forwardness and freedom of contemporary female manners, Gregory argued that modesty, delicacy, and elegance would better secure men's respect and admiration. His concern for his daughters' reputations in the world led him to advocate caution and prudence; thus he advised them to conceal their learning and wit, advice that was scornfully dismissed as a system of dissimulation by Mary Wollstonecraft in Vindication of the Rights of Woman" (Oxford DNB).

Letters to married women. The third edition, revised, and considerably enlarged

London: printed for the author; and sold by G. Kearsly, 1774. 12mo., xvii + (3) + 256pp., including the leaf of advertisements before the main register (advertising Smith's Family Physician>), with the contemporary armorial bookplate of Grant Mitchell on front pastedown and the near-contemporary signature of Charlotta Amelia Mitchell >on title-page, contemporary plain sheep, worn at joints. A very good crisp copy. First published in 1767: 2nd ed. 1768: 3rd ed. 1774. Translated into French 1770: into Dutch 1775: and the 1st American edition, Philadelphia 1792. Although copies of the first three editions of Smith's popular little work are now very scarce, later editions, particularly those of the 6th ed. of 1792, are relatively common. Letters to married women> is a group of 15 'letters' in each of which the author addresses various aspects of pregnancy and child care (Letters I - XII), milk (Letter XIII), the sick chamber (Letter XIV), and old age and death (Letter XV), the last letter being dated March 20, 1774. It is primarily, though, on the subject of pregnancy, infancy, and children that Smith's book was considered an authority. The first two chapters, however, consider the subject of 'marks' or birthmarks, and Smith goes about showing that the popular view that such marks 'have been generally considered as the effect of a fright, or a disappointment of the mothers longings' has no scientific validity. The author, although a convinced advocate of breast feeding - and he also warns of the 'evils' of 'delivering children to the care of foster-nurses' - describes here an artificial breast or infant suckling system of his own design. 'Since this book made its first appearance', Smith writes, 'I have contrived a milk-pot for my own nursery ... For the satisfaction of my readers I shall give a description of it. This pot is somewhat in form like an urn; it contains a little more than a quarter of a pint; its handle, and neck or spout, are not unlike those of a coffee-pot, except that the neck of this arises from the very bottom of the pot, and is very small ... The end of the spout is a little raised, and forms a roundish knob, somewhat in appearance like a small heart; this is perforated by three or four small holes: a piece of fine rag is tied loosely over it, which serves the child to play with, instead of the nipple, and through which, by the infant's sucking, the milk is constantly strained. The child is equally satisfied as it would be with the breast; it never wets him in the least; he is obliged to labour for every drop he receives in the same manner as when at the breast; and, greatly in recommendation of this contrivance, the nurses confess it is more convenient than a boat, and that it saves a great deal of trouble in the feeding of an infant; which is the greatest security to parents, that their servants will use it, when they themselves are not present' Smith concludes by announcing that 'the model of this milk-pot is left with Mr. Morrison, at the Three Kings, in Cheapside, for the benefit of the public. The milk-pots are now also made in the Queen's-ware, in order that the poor may be accommodated'. Hugh Smith, M.D. (1736?-1789), from a family of medical practitioners, practised at Hatton Garden in London, having graduated M.D. from Leyden in 1755. He married the wealthy daughter of Archibald Maclean of Trevor Park, East Barnet.

Considerations on the measures carrying on with respect to the British colonies in North-America

London printed; Hartford reprinted: Eben. Watson 8vo (21.6 cm, 8.5"). 63, [1] pp.. 1774 One of five American editions appearing in 1774, following the London first of the same year, of this important polemic. The second Baron Rokeby was a politician and champion of civil liberties who published several pamphlets opposing Lord North's American policy; Appletons' Cyclopaedia of American Biography notes that "the measures for the coercion of the American colonies were especially repugnant to his sense of justice" (V, 287). As supportive as he was of the American cause, Robinson-Morris was also critical of Dr. Franklin, whose inflammatory writings are here compared to Fawkes's gunpowder. Period-style quarter calf with marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges tooled in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title and elegant small decorations at head and foot. Pages age-toned; three leaves with minor staining. Title-page with repaired chip to outer margin, traces of early inked inscriptions in center of page, and partially shaved inscription in upper margin. Last text page with inked inscription in lower margin, partially shaved at beginning of inscription.

Published in fifteen parts between 1774 and 1793 with the 27 text passages divided in no particular order. These parts were supplied with separate title leaves which for obvious reasons usually were discarded in connection with the binding and regrouping of the booklets, of which all are known in several variants. In this copy the separate title-leaf to Isaiah in the Old Testament is preserved. The Swedish Bible Commission was set up in 1773 by King Gustav III by initiative of Bishop Jacob Serenius. It consisted of 21 members, apart from Serenius himself, C. F. Mennander, G. A. Liljestråle, N. Rosén von Rosenstein, J. Ihre, P. W. Wargentin and above all Carl Aurivillius and later J. A. Tingstadius. The great botanist Linnaeus was also a member of the commission, in which he mainly served as an expert on the subjects of zoology and botany. There are docoments preserved from this period where Linnaeus presents an odd theory regarding the bone from which Eve was created, a theory which however was passed over in silence in the finished translation. It took twenty years to complete the work, after which it was presented to the Swedish clergy. The commission received severe criticism for lacking an ear for the language of devotion, among other things. The translation was not approved at the Council of Uppsala in 1793 and the commission had to begin again with new members and more explicit guidelines. The work was not finished until 1917, when the Bible Commission of 1773 finally was dispersed as one of the longest working official committees in Swedish history. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First edition of "The first French book on picturesque gardening... (It) occupies a position in the forefront of the development of French picturesque gardening design and theory." (Wiebenson. THE PICTURESQUE GARDEN IN FRANCE, pp. 64-5). Watelet was a financier, artist, poet and aesthetic theorist whose own garden at Moulin Joli, begun in the 1750s on a natural and picturesque site on three small islands in the river Seine near Paris, was among the earliest and most significant French gardens laid out in the natural style. Watelet was a central figure in an important artistic and literary circle which included Francois Boucher, Hubert Robert, d'Alembert, and Vigée-Lebrun. These were frequent visitors to Moulin-Joli, which was also visited by Marie Antoinette (while she was still planning her Hameau), Walpole, De Lille, and De Ligne, among others. Watelet describes the garden in the last 23 pages of his ESSAI. There is also a lengthy description of a Chinese garden (based on Liu-Chou's ESSAI SUR LES JARDINS DES CHINOIS).         A SUMMARY VIEW OF THE RIGHTS OF BRITISH AMERICA. SET FORTH IN SOME RESOLUTIONS INTENDED FOR THE INSPECTION OF THE PRESENT DELEGATES OF THE PEOPLE OF VIRGINIA, NOW IN CONVENTION. By a Native, and Member of the House of Burgesses

Philadelphia: Re-Printed by John Dunlap, 1774.. 22 [of 23]pp. Last leaf provided in expert facsimile. Half antique calf and marbled boards. A bit tanned. Overall just about very good. The extremely rare John Dunlap second edition, and first obtainable edition, of Thomas Jefferson's first book, a central document of the Revolution. "This is Jefferson's first separately printed book and, according to Randolph Adams is one of the four fundamental works relating to the Revolution...The SUMMARY VIEW should be required reading for those who today are inclined to minimize and excuse the conduct of the British towards our ancestors" - Streeter. Jefferson submitted this petition to the Virginia convention, with the intent that it be sent to King George. Because of its strong tone it was never sent, but printed copies circulated in America and a London edition appeared as well. It was an extraordinary debut, and its success was probably responsible for Jefferson's election to the Second Continental Congress and his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence. The first edition of the SUMMARY VIEW was printed in a small edition at Williamsburg, also in 1774, and survives in seven known copies, six in institutions (the last copy at auction, in 1991, realized $231,000, and is in a private collection). Another copy of the present edition realized $27,500 the same year. The present copy, with only the final paragraph in facsimile, was sold by this firm to the collector Laird Park, and appeared in his sale in 2000. We are pleased to now offer it again. The two copies mentioned seem to be the only ones to trade in the last thirty years. HOWES J79. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 74-37a. AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE 119b. STREETER SALE 754. EVANS 13351. SABIN 35918.
