First edition. 3 volumes. 88 engraved plates: 24 in text volumes and 64 in atlas including Death of Cook plate (3 short marginal tears repaired). Together. 9 volumes, comprising 8 volumes 4to, and 1 volume atlas folio (57.5 x 42.5 cm), minor spotting, offsetting and occasional stain, nothing untoward. Modern half calf gilt extra by Aquarius, an excellent set. A complete set of Captain Cook's great voyages. Complete with Death of Cook plate and Streight of Magellan chart. "Captain Cook's three great voyages form the basis of any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done. He was the first really scientific navigator, and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). "As an explorer Cook stands equal to Vasco de Gama, Christopher Columbus and Magellan. Beside proving that the Southern Continent existed only within the Antarctic Circle and showing there was no practical sea route between the Pacific and the Atlantic in the Arctic, he completed with accuracy the outline map of the largest ocean and opened the way for trade and settlement. As a seaman and navigator he showed outstanding ability. As a man he was brave and determined, a leader that men could follow literally to the ends of the earth. But greatest among his qualities was his care and consideration for people, be they his men, whose health and conditions were always his close concern, or the natives that he met, whose culture and custom he was careful to respect" (Lord Lewin writing in Capt. James Cook Navigator, NMM, 1990). The first voyage under Cook's command on the Endeavour was primarily of a scientific nature, the mission being to observe the transit of Venus at Tahiti. Having carried out his duties, Cook sailed on to New Zealand which he circumnavigated and surveyed, before going on to Australia where he discovered and named New South Wales. Both Australia and New Zealand were annexed as a result of this voyage. On the second voyage Cook was sent by the Admiralty to ascertain whether a great Terra Australis really existed below the Antarctic Circle. He circumnavigated Antarctica at high latitudes and captained the first ship on record to cross the Antarctic Circle. Though discovering the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia, he did not gain sight of a Southern Continent. "Cook was a brilliant navigator and hydrographer, an excellent administrator and planner, and probably the first sea captain to realize the importance of preserving the health and well-being of his crew On his second voyage, of 112 men on board the Resolution, which he commanded, Cook lost only one by disease - and that not scurvy - a unique achievement in his time." PMM. Cook's third and final voyage was an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage with a remarkable crew including William Bligh, George Vancouver, and James Burney. After calling at Tasmania [Attributes: First Edition]

Description Méthodique d'une Collection de Minéraux, du Cabinet de M.D.R.D.L.

Engraved allegorical frontis. by Augustin Saint-Aubin. xxxii, 299, [5] pp. 8vo, orig. wrappers, uncut. Paris: Didot & Knapen, 1773. First edition, and a lovely copy in original state, of an uncommon book; this is one of Romé's first publications. It is a description "of the metallic ores of his own mineral cabinet, in which he discussed the origin, metamorphosis, and paragenesis of each."-D.S.B., XI, p. 521. Earlier, he had catalogued the mineralogical curiosities in the cabinet of Pedro Francisco Davila and for several years found steady employment by preparing at least fourteen other mineralogical catalogues. In all the descriptions in the present work, Romé stresses the importance of crystalline form and that this form is the chief characteristic by which minerals may be classified. Romé (1736-90), by formulating the law of constancy of interfacial angles, established crystallography as the basis of mineralogy. The attractive frontispiece, drawn by Saint-Aubin, depicts two putti, one examining ores under a microscope and the other stoking a furnace. Preserved in a box. ? Yves Laissus, "Les Cabinets d'Histoire Naturelle" in René Taton, ed., Enseignement et diffusion des sciences en France au dix-huitième siècle, p. 669-"un véritable manuel de minéralogie." Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography, 1469 to 1920, 4154-"Very scarce. In this collection catalog, the famous French crystallographer fully describes about 750 metallic minerals from his own cabinet. Included are specimens consisting of pure metals as well as natural alloys and combinations with sulfur. Basic division is based upon the principle metals and semi-metals contained in the described specimens and include gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, lead, mercury, antimony, zinc, bismuth, cobalt, arsenic and sulfur. Under each of these headings, the specimens are divided based upon their form and chemical composition. For each item described, notes on the origin, associated minerals, locality, size and the estimated weight of contained precious metals is presented. The catalog is well referenced, and if a particular specimen was given to Romé, the supplier's name is included in the description.".

Catalogue des Livres, Estampes, &c. de Monsieur V.S.

dont la vente se fera publiquement…à Anvers à la Chambre des Arquebusiers, le Lundi 18 Octobre & Jours suivants. 12, 250 pp. 8vo, attractive antique half-calf & speckled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Anvers: J. Grangé, [1773?]. An earlier owner attributes the ownership of this catalogue to Pierre François Gisbert de Schorel, seigneur de Wilryck (1716-73 or 1778) and mayor of Anvers, whose collection of paintings was sold the following year in Anvers by Grangé. Van Schorel was actively involved in the artistic life of Antwerp and in the early 1740s played an important role in the reorganization and financial support of the city's Academie voor Schoone Kunsten. He formed one of the largest gatherings of Rubens's oil sketches in the southern Netherlands in the eighteenth century. His splendid art collection featured twenty-eight paintings by Rubens.

Bibliotheca Westiana: A Catalogue of the Curious and truly Valuable Library of the late James West, Esq; President of the Royal Society

â€¦digested by Samuel Paterson. Which…will be sold by Auction, by Mess. Langford…on Monday, the 29th of March 1773, and the Twenty-three following Days… viii, 239 (i.e. 235) pp. 8vo, cont. French red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, flat spine richly gilt, a.e.g. [London]: 1773. The second of the auction catalogues prepared for the sale of the library of James West. This is a splendid copy bound in contemporary French red morocco and entirely ruled in red (including the title-page) with prices in a contemporary hand. This copy belonged to the famous book collector Michael Wodhull (1740-1816), who has characteristically recorded on the free front flyleaf the price, date and place of purchase as well as signed it. West (1704-73), treasurer of the Inner Temple and President of the Royal Society, formed a collection of printed books "exceedingly rich in early English ones. It contained no fewer than thirty-four Caxtons, and a large number of works from the presses of Lettou, Machlinia, the anonymous 'Scole mayster' of St. Albans, Wynkyn de Worde, Pynson, and the rest of the old English typographers, many of which were unique copies. His manuscripts were exceptionally interesting and valuable."-Fletcher, English Book Collectors, p. 205-(& see pp. 203-07). His library was also strong in scientific, historical, and philosophical works as well as books dealing with law and crime. West bought at all the great sales and dispersals in England for nearly fifty years, including those of Rawlinson, Harley, and Folkes. West also formed large collections of prints, drawings, paintings, medals and coins, and an important natural history cabinet. Upon his death, the collections were consigned to a general auctioneer, Messrs. Langford, who were a stone's-throw from West's house and experienced in selling anything and everything. Langford's prepared a catalogue of the library but suppressed it within a week due to its inferior and chaotic cataloguing and modest appearance. Samuel Paterson, the great auctioneer and cataloguer, was called in to produce a fresh catalogue, under the auspices of Messrs. Langford, intended to be more worthy of the library's fame. Paterson's catalogue - the present one - merged all the books. The number of lots was increased from 3796 to 4653 and the cataloguing was far superior (the compiler of the first catalogue disliked titles in German and had only a slight knowledge of the older books). The sale, with Paterson officiating, brought nearly 3000 pounds which was a very great event for the time. All the great English collectors of the period were buyers including Bindley, Wodhull, Dr. Askew, Dr. Hunter, George Mason, Thomas Crofts, and C.M. Cracherode. A very fine copy. ? De Ricci, pp. 51-53, 55-57, 66, & 72. R. Charles Lucas, "Book-Collecting in the Eighteenth Century: The Library of James West" in The Library, 5th Series, Vol. 3 (1949), pp. 265-78.

1773 MAP of THE SHROPSHIRE EARTHQUAKE

On the 27th of May, 1773, a remarkable land-slip occurred at a place called the Birches located on the hillside above the River Severn between Buildwas and Coalbrookdale, not far from the site of the present day Ironbridge power Station, when more than 18 acres of land were, by a sudden disruption, carried forward with such impetuous velocity as to stop the current of the Severn, and take possession of its ancient bed. After days of heavy rain with the river in heavy flood, the hillside above slipped into the valley below, completely blocking the river for a time, there are recorded reports of many vessels having fallen on their sides in the drained river bed downstream being lost when the river finally found a new course past the blockage. Great Chasms 30 feet deep appeared in the hillside above with pillars of earth left standing within the chasms, the ground below having moved a considerable distance. There were a number of written accounts of this phenomena including one by the famous Methodist minister The Rev. John Fletcher of Madeley, and T Addenbrooke whose account appeared in the Annual register for that year . This is a Rare original copy of the Plan of the Landslip, as surveyed and drawn by George Young in 1773, which details the change of the course of the river Severn and the Landslip and its affects above, here called an Earthquake, the map measures 27 inches by 20 inches approx., and is mounted in an old wood frame with slatted back which measures 34.5 inches by 26.5 inches, the map is generally darkened with a small area of loss to the top left corner, and a few small edge tears with no loss, mild staining to left hand border, small red mark above the explanatory text in lower left corner else in good general condition, due to the weight and fragility of the frame, It would not be safe to post the map in the frame so would prefer collection in person if possible,

London: printed for R. Baldwin,, 1773. Containing, I. The Elements of Modern Geography, in which, besides many other useful Articles, the Latitude and Longitude of a great Variety of Places are given from the latest Observations. II. A comprehensive System of Ancient Geography, both sacred and profane, particularly adapted to the Illustration of the Classic Authors, and of the Historical Parts of the Bible. III. The Description and Use of the Celestial and Terrestrial Globes, in which particular Attention has been given to the regular Disposition, and most convenient Solution of a numerous Collection of Problems, which are succeeded by several ingenious and entertaining Paradoxes for the Exercise of the Learner. - Also the Principles of Dialling, as it is performed and illustrated by the Globes;-And the Construction, and Use of the different Kinds of Maps. IV. The Elements of Astronomy, in which, besides a large Account of the Solar System, and of the various Motions, Revolutions, &c. of the Planet and Comets, are given the Theory of the Four Seasons, the Harvest-Moons, Eclipses, Tides, and several other Phaenomena too numerous to be here mentioned. To this Part is added a copious Appendix, containing the Elements of Chronology, a Science very intimately connected with that of Astronomy. The Whole is illustrated with The Necessary Engravings. And, though principally intended for The Use Of Schools, May serve as a convenient Memorandum-Book for those Gentlemen and Ladies who have been already instructed in the Sciences above-mentioned. Duodecimo (175 x 106 mm). Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label. Folding engraved world map as frontispiece, 12 engraved plates, of which 3 are folding; with integral final advert leaf. Contemporary ownership inscription ("Bravier") at head of title. Corners worn, small inkspot at head of preface, a few marks elsewhere, but a very good copy. First edition of this juvenile text on geography and astronomy. Jones, described on the title as "Teacher of the Classics and Geography, at Bromley, in Kent", is known principally by this work. He also wrote A New and Universal Geographical Grammar: or, a Complete System of Geography (1772), a version explicitly for adults. The book is dedicated to John Hawkesworth, who was governor of a girls' boarding-school housed in Thornhill Mansion, Bromley, before he established himself as a literary figure of some note; Jones was presumably a master at Hawkesworth's school. This title, published the same year as Hawkesworth's best-selling account of Cook's first voyage, is uncommon: ESTC gives three locations in the British Isles (BL, Nottingham University Library, and the Bodleian) and three in North America (two at Harvard, the other Toronto Public Libraries).

No 13. [The head of a New Zealander.]

1773 - London: Strahan and Cadell, 1773. 185 x 225mm. A very fine example. An illustration of the intricately-tattooed face of a Maori, published in Hawkesworth's 'An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere.' which included the Official Account of Captain Cook's First Voyage. It shows the Maori head-and-shoulders, with a comb in his hair, a stone ear ornament and a tooth necklace. Although tattooing was already known, it was Cook's voyage that introduced the Samoan word 'Tatau' to England, with Sir Joseph Banks describing the procedure in his journals. The plate only has a plate number, so the title, as above, comes from the index.

Très bel exemplaire. Edition originale rare. "Du théatre...", composé au moment où les pièces de l'auteur n'avaient pas encore de succès; c'est une attaque contre l'ancien théâtre et principalement contre Racine, une tentative de poétique nouvelle, tendant à ouvrir une voie nouvelle, à rejeter les fables et les règles anciennes, à produire sur la scène la société vivante, le peuple, la vie ordinaire. Présentées sous une forme violente et bizarre, ces idées soulevèrent toute la critique contre leur auteur. wiki.

An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the Order of His present Majesty for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook

      W. Strahan & T. Cadell, London 1773 - Three volumes, quarto, with 52 engraved charts and plates (most folding); in contemporary tree calf. First edition of the official account of Cook's great first voyage into the Pacific during the course of which he discovered and charted the entire east coast of Australia, naming it New South Wales. This narrative was edited from Cook's journals by the professional writer Hawkesworth. Cook's voyage occupies volumes two and three; the first volume contains the official accounts of the voyages of Byron, Wallis and Carteret, and Hawkesworth's compendium thus contains the cream of eighteenth-century English exploration. As the official narrative of the Endeavour voyage this publication has always enjoyed considerable status, though it had its critics, chiefly because of Hawkesworth's cavalier approach to the editing job: Cook himself hated the use of the first person singular in the narrative. Horace Walpole noted waspishly in a letter (to Dr Mason: Yale edition of the Letters, vol. 28 p. 96.) that 'I have almost waded through Dr Hawkesworth's three volumes of the voyages in the South Seas. The entertaining matters would not fill half a volume; and at best it is but an account of the fishermen on the coasts of 40 islands?'.This is a really handsome copy of the first edition, and unlike many examples it is complete with the leaf of " A Description of the Cuts" and the Chart of the Straits of Magellan. These are frequently lacking from copies of the first edition, probably because they were the last components of the book to be printed. Some browning and offsetting, the plate 'Strait of Magellan' torn and laid down on linen; but a good copy, spines renewed. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Question Concerning Literary Property, Determined by the Court of King's Bench . . . In the Cause between Andrew Millar and Robert Taylor

London: Printed for W. Strahan and M. Woodfall for B. Tovey, 1773, 1773. First edition. Rothschild 561; ESTC T88999. Title a little browned; fine, large copy.. Quarto, modern brown cloth, brown calf label, gilt lettering. One of the most important copyright decisions of the 18th century English jurisprudence: In 1767 bookseller Andrew Millar brought suit against Robert Taylor for Taylor's printing of James Thomson's The Seasons, the famous poem which Millar had purchased from the poet in 1729, and to which in his opinion he still owned exclusive rights. The arguments before the court explored in depth the questions of common-law copyright, the Statute of Anne, "booksellers' monopoly," and the rights of authors to their literary property. The court decided, three to one, in Millar's favor, who died just as the trial was beginning. Sir James Burrow (1701-1782) was a legendary court reporter, and his account of Millar vs. Taylor is considered a "lucid and valuable" narrative.

The printed version, dedicated to Samuel Johnson, appeared several days later to an equally successful reception. It was produced at great haste simultaneously by two printers (one was responsible for signatures A-K, the other L-P). Consequently there are several states of the first edition "and no copies appear entirely in the first state" - Todd. This one contains the following first issue points: it does not have a half-title and the epilogue is in the preliminary gathering; the price is on the title-page, a second issue point, which is found in both first and second states. Leather bookplate of Blairhame on the front paste-down.
