Description de l’Arabie d’Après les Observations et Recherches Faites dans les Pays même.

Nicolas Moller, Copenhagen 1773 - xliii, 372 pp., 18 engraved plates hors text, of which 4 folding, and 7 maps of which 6 folding, letter press genealogical folding table, half title, title vignettes, new spine, preserving original full calf boards, brittle and worn, contents generally clean with only infrequent light marginal foxing and soiling, all edges red, plates 4 and 5 lightly offset, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary stamp verso front cover and on title page, stamp of Rev. Luke V. McCabe on title page. The famous account of the Royal Danish expedition (1761-67) to the Arabian Peninsula, the first scientific expedition to this area sponsored by King Frederick V of Denmark, and from which Niebuhr returned as the only survivor. The expedition faced continuous physical hardship and danger from the moment it failed to leave Danish waters against winter storms, until the loss of all its members, except Niebuhr, as a result of malaria in Yemen. Nonetheless, the scientific discoveries that were made and the array of manuscripts that were recovered, aroused lasting interest among Europeans, curious to hear about a part of Arabia that had previously been closed off. The plates include illustrations of food, shoes, clothing, inscriptions, coins, agriculture, military exercises in the Yemen, the mosques of Mecca and Medina, and maps of Oman, the Arab Gulf, Suez and the Red Sea. Niebuhr was famous for his map of the Yemen (55 x 35 cm) which he calculated by traversing the country and measuring the distances mile by mile. It was the map of the Red Sea that contributed to the British in India re-routing their cargoes via the Suez instead of around Africa. For the next century this map served further European explorers of Arabia. His map of the Arab Gulf is the earliest map to mention Kuwait. Niebuhr is also one of the first to call the country Yemen instead of Arabia Felix. His work still forms one of the most authoritative descriptions of Arabia and in particular Yemen. The first edition appeared in German in Copenhagen in 1772, and soon after, this edition in French. The second French version is by an anonymous translator. "He was the first European to mention the spread of the Wahhabi revolution, an Islamic fundamentalist movement which had a tremendous influence on the history of Arabia" (Waldman, 1992).         Chart of New-Zealand, explored in 1769 and 1770, by Lieut: I: Cook, Commander of His Majesty's Bark Endeavour. Engraved by I. Bayly.

1773 - London: Strachan & Cadell, 1773. 510 x 410mm. A landmark map: one of the most important maps in New Zealand's history: Captain Cook's map of New Zealand, engraved by I. Bayley for Hawkesworth's 'An Account of the Voyages. For making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere', the official account of Cook's first circumnavigation. Although New Zealand has been discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642, it was Cook who discovered that it was not part of the great 'Terra Australis' or Southern continent. Arriving at Poverty Bay on 7th October 1769 he took six months to circumnavigate the islands: as he sailed east of the Banks Peninsula he mistook it for an island; skirting south of Stewart Island he marked on this map as a possible peninsula.

        Laurus [Laurel]

[Nuremberg], 1773. Engraving, coloured by hand, by J.J..Haid. Very good condition. A very fine image from Trew's 'Plantae Selectae', one of the greatest of all eighteenth-century botanical books, drawn by the greatest of eighteenth-century botanical artists, George Dionysius Ehret. Linnaeus, wrote to Trew, in Latin, that "The miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants...nothing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future."Christoph JakobTrew, a physician and botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look." (Hunt). Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practised drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl, and it was during this period that Trew met Ehret.Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742, the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them...."Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until 1748, when Johann Jacob Haid from Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings.Gerta Calman Georg Ehret, Flower painter Extraordinary (1977) p.97; Dunthorne 309; Great Flower Books(1990) p.144; Hunt 539; Nissen BBI 1997; Pritzel 9499; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 15.131.

LA SAGESSE DU SOUVERAIN DANS LES MOYENS DE RENDRE LE COMMERCE FLORISSANT

Leiden, Elie Luzac. 1773. Paperback. First edition. Blue paper wrappers. 8vo. 4, 84 pages, 22 cm. In French. Title translates to “The Wisdom of the Sovereign in Finding Ways to Establish a Flourishing Trade. ” Title in red and black and with engraved vignette. The author describes here the economies of different countries during the course of various eras. He posits that freedom of religion is one of the prerequisites for creating a prosperous national economy, examples of failure in that regard is France- who drove out the Huguenots and Spain and Portugal who expelled the Jews. “Certainly the Inquisition is blind, superstitious and cruel for pushing the Jews to desert Portugal and Spain - [eventually] bringing them to Amsterdam, where wise-men welcomed them with kindness. There, the [Jews] encouraged flourishing trade practices which they spread around the world, while in Spain and Portugal [trade] collapsed. That is why in order to populate our provinces and have them grow prosperous, our wiser nations should welcome the strangerÂ… and let all freely practice his religion” (p. 16) . A copy sold at auction for USD 984 in 2016. Significant dampstaining and edgewear. Minimal pencil markings that do not affect text. Later tiny photo of a house added to title page. Good condition.         A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in His Majesty's Ship, the Endeavour. Faithfully transcribed from the Papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, Draughtsman to Joseph Banks, Esq. on his late Expedition, with Dr. Solander, round the World..

London: Printed for Stanfield Parkinson, the Editor, 1773. With offsetting from the plates as often; corner torn form one leaf without loss (p.37); some rubbing to boards especially at edges.. Large quarto, with frontispiece portrait, a map and 26 plates; completely uncut and partly unopened; an exceptionally large copy in its original binding of blue-grey paper boards, plain paper spine carefully renewed; in a folding cloth case. A really exceptional copy of the first edition of the most handsome of the unofficial accounts of Cook's first voyage. Copies of the first edition of Parkinson are invariably quite large with generous margins (and are often misleadingly catalogued as "Large paper" - in fact there were no "small paper" copies, only copies cut down by the binder), but the book is virtually never seen as here, completely uncut in its simple original binding. The spine has been replaced with appropriate plain paper. For the record, this copy measures 380 x 95 mm (binding) and 362 x 292 mm (bookblock).Parkinson, the son of a Quaker brewer of Edinburgh, was apprenticed to a draper when his ability for drawing 'flowers, fruits and other objects of natural history' first attracted the attention of Sir Joseph Banks. Banks engaged him as botanical artist on Cook's first voyage, and he went on to produce an important series of magnificent botanical and natural history drawings, and was the first professional artist to set foot on Australian soil. He died at the end of the voyage, en route from Batavia to the Cape of Good Hope.Parkinson's is the most handsome of the unofficial accounts of Cook's first voyage; it contains extensive accounts of New Zealand and Australia, and has some of the earliest natural history observations on the region, including the first published use of the word kangaroo (as "kangooroo", p. 149). Parkinson himself was responsible for the original drawings for twenty-three of the twenty-seven plates here. His original artwork and these splendid engravings made from it represent one of the chief visual sources for Cook's first voyage, and one of the first views European observers had of such South Pacific scenes. Parkinson's journal of the voyage is plain and unaffected, and in the words of its editor 'its only ornament is truth, and its best recommendation characteristic of himself, its genuine simplicity'. Curiously, as the botanical drawings were retained by Banks, none of his botanical drawings appear in his own account, and not until recent years has the world at large learned of Parkinson's genius as a botanical artist. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney).

Conferenza del signor Le Brun primo pittore del Re di Francia con le figure disegnate da me Abr. David Nizza l'anno 1773.

In Torino. Manoscritto cartaceo, fine XVIII secolo, - in-24 (mm 95x60), ff. Letters Patent Signed, in Swedish with translation, (1746-1792, from 1771 King of Sweden)

1773 - the King's titles include "Heir of Norway and Duke of Schleswig-Holstein", appointing "Senior Lieutenant . Our beloved the Noble and Honourable Johan Gustaf Haegerflycht", (1736-1805, later General), to be "Staff-Captain in the Company of Colonel the Baron Armfeldt, Knight, of Our Artillery at Stralsund", in place of Petter Bernhard Piper, "proposed to Us in humble obedience in consideration of his service faithfully performed and of constant and manifest satisfaction", awarding him the salary until further notice, all to be implemented by "the appropriate person", countersigned 'Carl Nadenstierna', embossed stamp duty of 18 daler plus 50%, good papered seal with Royal arms, 2 sides folio and conjugate blank, Stockholm Castle, 17th February small defect in conjugate blank Gustaf III succeeded to a Sweden torn by party strife, but by gaining the Army's support worked a bloodless revolution (September 1772) which made him a strong but constitutional sovereign. In 1775 he himself commanded the troops mobilised on the Norwegian frontier, but war with Denmark was averted. Sweden prospered - indeed it has been called her 'Golden Age' - under Gustaf's treaties with Russia and Denmark (1780, the famous 'armed neutrality'), with the new U.S.A. (1783) and with France. However, the old noble families resented their loss of power, and following the war with Russia to defend Finland (1788), conspiracies were hatched, and finally Gustaf was assassinated. Himself a brilliant speaker, he wrote for the theatre, laid the foundation of the Stockholm Museum with statues, pictures and medals bought during his visit to Rome (1783), and founded the Swedish Academy (1786). Lt.-Gen. Baron Fromholt Armfelt, 1721-1797, came from a famous military family, being a son of Carl Gustaf Armfelt, 1666-1736, and great-uncle of Gustaf III's favourite Gustaf Mauritz (1757-1814). Fromholt served in the Seven Years' War as a Captain in Marshal Saxe's regiment of dragoons, then transferred (1758) to the Artillery. From 1764 he was at Stralsund in Hither (West) Pomerania, opposite the southern tip of Sweden, held by Sweden 1628-1815. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE ANCHORET. A Moral Tale, in a series of letters.

Three volumes. [4], 216; [4], 215; [4], 171, [1 blank], [7 Contents] pages. Not illustrated. All half-titles present. Contemporary full untitled calf; gilt volumes numbers to panelled spines. 12mo. First edition. Contemporary armorial bookplates of Alexander Hamilton, the 10th Duke of Hamilton. Binding worn and joints splitting but holding; else a very good, clean set of this rare novel. Roscoe. J13. The Monthly Review described the work as. ' A decent and modest, though not very interesting tale; notwithstanding that there is much business done in the courtship way, and a great number of marriages performed: to which end many personages are introduced, but not many characters. The sentiments are moral, and the language, on the whole, superior to that of many productions of this kind. Yet the diction is in some places stiff, in other incorrect, and frequently filled with what the writer might think prettiness of phrase and expression. But as, doubtless his (or her) every faculty was strained to delight the gentle Readers, who, we suppose to be chiefly females, it is to be hoped they will be candid and favourable to the Author, who seems to be one of their own sex.'

CIORANESCU 18°, N°34061; OLIVIER N°1828; TCHEMERZINE III-730
