KITAO, Tatsunobu. [Son of Nishikawa Jitokusai Sukenobu?]
[Osaka 1772, Kashiwaraya]. Stitched blue wrs., large format, 18 x 26 cm., minor edge wear, contents clean, [204]p. wood- block printed on doulbe leaves, 8p. color prints, ca. 75 b w illustrations on women's culture, a small old worm hole on the first few pages, no loss. This excellent work is devoted to Japanese women, with 60 illustrations on the events of the twelve months, about 50 others on women's culture all skillfully drawn by Kitao. * With a profusion of calligraphy examples on how to write a New Year's letter & reply, festival letters, invitations, plum blossom letters, yearly celebration letters, holidays, weddings, births, 'thank you' notes, gifts &c. A very interesting illustrated book, with very good insight to the activities of the Japanese before Western influence. Charming illustrations show a wide variety of customs and festivals. * Color plates show shell gathering at the shore, Great Shrine at Edo, Shamisen & Koto playing, Madame Lady Murasaki composing her "Tales of Genji," the first novel written by a woman. With most beautiful examples of calligraphy examples. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: K. Toda: THE RYERSON COLLECTION: p.216 top of the page. * Louise Brown: BLOCK PRINTING & BOOK ILLUSTRATION IN JAPAN: p.131, bottom of the page, wherein Brown lists books signed by Sukenobu, although he died in 1751, may actually have been the work of his son. Clearly the art work is exceptionally similar if not that of Sukenobu. It is our opinion, because of the coloring, this must be the work of his son, with the innovative color added. * Not in Kerlen. *

Very rare first edition due to the fact that during his lifetime most of Hemsterhuis' works were printed for private circulation only and hence in small and anonymous editions which Hemsterhuis had bound for the recipients. Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790), Dutch philosopher. Although Hemsterhuis was an admirer of John Locke and Isaac Newton, his inspiration was Platonic and idealistic. His emphasis on feeling as a source of knowledge makes him a forerunner of the Romantics. His life and philosophy may be divided into two periods. In the first period the Lettres sur l'Homme et ses rapports was his principal work, preceded by two small, closely connected treatises, Lettres sur la Sculpture and Lettre sur les Désirs in which works Hemsterhuis argued that the essence of the aesthetic experience is longing to unite oneself with the art object. This concept became part of his theory of ethics which is set out in the Lettre sur les Désirs, and which is further developed in the pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baegert, Jacob]
Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey, 1772. [16],358,[1]pp. plus two engraved plates (on one sheet) and folding map. Small octavo. Modern half vellum and marbled boards, spine gilt. A bit of light age toning and an occasional light fox mark. Three small purple ink spots in lower portion of map. Near fine. First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California, its climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California, and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: " was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians, the soil was poor, the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak, and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768, after the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sumarokow [Sumarokov], Alexand(r) [Aleksandr Petrovic]:
Riga, Hartknoch, 1772 - 88 S. Erste deutsche Ausgabe der "Pervyj i glavnyj Streleckij bunt" von Aleksandr. P. Sumarokov (1717 - 1777), sehr selten. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Venezia), Albrizzi, (1772). In-folio; 37 cc. Peter the Great; Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov, editor
pri Imperatorskoi Akademii Nauk, St. Petersburg 1772 - Small quartos (24.6 × 18.3 cm). Later polished calf with spine in six compartments and gilt titles; marbled endpapers; red edges; 460 and 438, a-e, 460 pp. (lacking pp. 461-763). Decorative initials, headpieces, and etched allegorical vignette with a small portrait of Peter, signed C. M. Rothe, preceding the text of both volumes. Small private library label removed to front pastedown; private stamp to titles verso; occasional foxing and light moisture stains to lower margin; the first five leaves of volume II with paper repairs, not affecting text; overall still quite attractive and an unusually complete set. First edition of the military and diplomatic campaign journals kept by Peter the Great, his lieutenants, and secretaries, which document the Russian war with Sweden and the legal and military development of the Russian Empire. These papers were to serve as the basis for any authoritative history of Petrine Russia and were compiled and edited by Peter himself, with the help of Aleksey Makarov and Petr Shapirov, but published only at Catherine the Great's behest after Peter's death. She tasked the conservative statesman, writer, and thinker, Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov, 1733-1790, with editing the work, as described in his preface. Peter was highly invested in leaving detailed documentation on the Great Northern War (1700-1721), which led to Sweden's defeat in the Baltic and established the Russian Empire as a major European political and military power. The journal describes in detail Peter's strategy, the movement o … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAUDEAU, abbé Nicolas.
Paris: Didot, Delalain, Lacombe, 1771: Carlsruhe and Paris: Lacombe, 1772. - 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (190 x 120). Nineteenth-century polished calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco spine label. Very good copies. Printer's device on title. I: First edition of Baudeau's finest economic work, "a compendious statement of Quesnay's views which, for clearness as well as for certain touches of originality, is far superior to anything from the pen of Mirabeau, Du Pont de Nemours, or Le Mercier de la Rivière" (Cossa). Baudeau here brilliantly refutes the Abbé Galiani, whose Dialogues sur le Commerce des Bleds had been published the previous year. The work is written in clear and simple terms – Turgot called it "un livre très clair et écrit, sur la fin, avec une chaleur douce qui en rendait la lecture intéressante" (quoted in Weulersse) – and met with great success as a general introduction to physiocratic thought. II: Very rare first separate edition, first published in the Ephémérides du Citoyen in January 1772. The work is divided into four sections, dealing with the natural requirements of man, society, reproduction, and the outlay of land-owners. Baden-Durlach was the only head of state to actually apply Physiocratic principles to the ruling of a country, a fact overlooked by Adam Smith when he wrote that "that system which represents the produce of land as the sole source of revenue and wealth of every country has, so far as I know, never been adopted by any nation, and it at present exists only in the speculat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Terence. Publius Terentius Afer (Ca. 190-159 B.C.).
John Baskerville, Birmingham: 1772. 364p. Slight foxing. 4to. [304 x 235 mm.] Contemporary straight grained plum morocco leather binding. Boards tooled in gold with a wide Greek key design, and in blind with an archway roll. Engraved bookplate showing a shield (Arms Barry of six Supporters); two unicorns; ermine Coronet of an Earl ; and the Motto A MA PUISSANCE. This is likely the plate of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845) Whig Prime Minister of Great Britain (1830-1834). There is also a manuscript inscription: "With B. Drury's Best Wishes, Eton, March 20 , 1820." John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Reed, in 'Old English Letter Foundries'. Gaskell 46; Brunet V:71 8. A really handsomely bound copy of a beautifully pri … [Click Below for Full Description]
