Baegert, Jacob]
Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey, 1772. [16],358,[1]pp. plus two engraved plates (on one sheet) and folding map. Small octavo. Modern half vellum and marbled boards, spine gilt. A bit of light age toning and an occasional light fox mark. Three small purple ink spots in lower portion of map. Near fine. First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California, its climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California, and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: "...it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians, the soil was poor, the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak, and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768, after the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sumarokow [Sumarokov], Alexand(r) [Aleksandr Petrovic]:
Riga, Hartknoch, 1772 - 88 S. Erste deutsche Ausgabe der "Pervyj i glavnyj Streleckij bunt" von Aleksandr. P. Sumarokov (1717 - 1777), sehr selten. [Click Below for Full Description]

POESIE PER L'INGRESSO SOLENNE
(Venezia), Albrizzi, (1772). In-folio; 37 cc. (Lapiccirella). "Venetian publishers produced some of the finest illustrated books in Europe in the 18th century? due to the exceptional pool of talented engravers in the city, with Francesco Bartolozzi among the most prominent? (Martineau-Robison, see nr. 244-245). ?[Venetian publishers] produced rich editions of libretti and poems for special events, which embodied in their ornamental fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter the Great; Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov, editor
pri Imperatorskoi Akademii Nauk, St. Petersburg 1772 - Small quartos (24.6 × 18.3 cm). Later polished calf with spine in six compartments and gilt titles; marbled endpapers; red edges; 460 and 438, a-e, 460 pp. (lacking pp. 461-763). Decorative initials, headpieces, and etched allegorical vignette with a small portrait of Peter, signed C. M. Rothe, preceding the text of both volumes. Small private library label removed to front pastedown; private stamp to titles verso; occasional foxing and light moisture stains to lower margin; the first five leaves of volume II with paper repairs, not affecting text; overall still quite attractive and an unusually complete set. First edition of the military and diplomatic campaign journals kept by Peter the Great, his lieutenants, and secretaries, which document the Russian war with Sweden and the legal and military development of the Russian Empire. These papers were to serve as the basis for any authoritative history of Petrine Russia and were compiled and edited by Peter himself, with the help of Aleksey Makarov and Petr Shapirov, but published only at Catherine the Great's behest after Peter's death. She tasked the conservative statesman, writer, and thinker, Prince Mikhail Shcherbatov, 1733-1790, with editing the work, as described in his preface. Peter was highly invested in leaving detailed documentation on the Great Northern War (1700-1721), which led to Sweden's defeat in the Baltic and established the Russian Empire as a major European political and military power. The journal describes in detail Peter's strategy, the movement o … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAUDEAU, abbé Nicolas.
Paris: Didot, Delalain, Lacombe, 1771: Carlsruhe and Paris: Lacombe, 1772. - 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (190 x 120). Nineteenth-century polished calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco spine label. Very good copies. Printer's device on title. I: First edition of Baudeau's finest economic work, "a compendious statement of Quesnay's views which, for clearness as well as for certain touches of originality, is far superior to anything from the pen of Mirabeau, Du Pont de Nemours, or Le Mercier de la Rivière" (Cossa). Baudeau here brilliantly refutes the Abbé Galiani, whose Dialogues sur le Commerce des Bleds had been published the previous year. The work is written in clear and simple terms – Turgot called it "un livre très clair et écrit, sur la fin, avec une chaleur douce qui en rendait la lecture intéressante" (quoted in Weulersse) – and met with great success as a general introduction to physiocratic thought. II: Very rare first separate edition, first published in the Ephémérides du Citoyen in January 1772. The work is divided into four sections, dealing with the natural requirements of man, society, reproduction, and the outlay of land-owners. Baden-Durlach was the only head of state to actually apply Physiocratic principles to the ruling of a country, a fact overlooked by Adam Smith when he wrote that "that system which represents the produce of land as the sole source of revenue and wealth of every country has, so far as I know, never been adopted by any nation, and it at present exists only in the speculat … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRIESTLEY, Joseph.
London: Printed for J. Johnson. FIRST EDITION. The first history of theories of vision, light, and colour, containing a thorough review of virtually all the significant work in the field. It also contains substantial chapters on optical instruments (the telescope, microscope, etc.). "Although the History of Optics contains much useful information, it was considerably less successful than the History of Electricity. Until recently optics had not attracted substantial historical interest, and although Priestley's History of Optics had but one English edition and a translation into German, it remained the only English work on the subject for a hundred and fifty years and the only one in any language for over fifty" (DSB). Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1772. Crook S/479 (with incorrect plate count). This copy has an additional list of 28 subscribers on the verso of the errata leaf, including several from Jamaica.2 volumes, 4to, pp. v, (viii), xvi, 422; 1 leaf, pp. 423-812, (12), folding engraved biographical chart (frontispiece) and 24 stilted plates.
