A Voyage Round The World. Performed by Order of His Most Christian Majesty, In the Years 1766, 1767, 1768, and 1769.Translated from the French By John Reinhold Forster, F.A.S.

London: Printed for J.Nourse and T.Davies, 1772. - 4to. pp. xxviii, 476. 5 folding engraved maps & 1 folding engraved plate. contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked with gilt spine mounted (some scraping to covers, but a nice copy). First Edition of the English Translation of the official account of the first French circumnavigation. Bougainville was instructed by the French government to surrender possession of the Falkland Islands to Spain and then to proceed across the Pacific to the East Indies. On his voyage he visited Tahiti, which he believed he was the first to discover, naming it ‘Nouvelle Cythère’, unaware of Wallis’s prior exploration, the Solomon Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, and the New Hebrides. The largest island in the Solomons and two straits in the Pacific were named after him. The narrative includes an account of the discovery and occupation of the Falkland Islands, and a lengthy description of Tahiti and its inhabitants. Bougainville’s expedition stimulated great interest in France, and bolstered European romantic notions of a ‘South Sea paradise’ inhabited by ‘noble savages’. Despite the attribution on the title-page, the translation was probably done by Georg Forster, while his father, Johann Reinhold, supplied the preface, dedication, and footnotes. Bell B423. Cox I 55. Hill p. 32. Howgego B142. JCB II 1816. Kroepelien 113. National Maritime Museum Cat. I 133. Sabin 6869 (not mentioning plate). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

October – December 1772

1772 - Rare Mexican Colonial Scientific Journal. October – December 1772. Mexico. Imprenta de la Biblioteca Mexicana. In 4to (200 mm x 138 mm). Four issues: 4 ff.; pp. 49-56; pp. 57-64; pp. 65-72. Unbound. Very good, clean and crisp. First edition. These are 4 (of 13) of the impossibly rare and early colonial scientific journals by the Mexican scientist, Jose Alzate y Ramirez; the set comprises numbers 1, 7, 8, and 10, which include the “Estado de la geografia de Nueva España, y modo de perfeccionarla”, and the “Memoria sobre el modo mecanico con que obran los baños”. Of considerably rarity, we could only trace four complete institutional copies (with the 13 issues), the rest only holding separate numbers. Other issues include notes on crops, and references to Louisiana farmers, sadly not present here. Medina states that the whole of the journal was re-printed in volume 4, of the Puebla re-impression of the Gazeta. Alzate y Ramirez (1737 – 1799) was a Mexican Priest, scientist, cartographer, and writer; a true American scholar and polymath. His early studies were carried out at San Idelfonso in Mexico City, by 20 the age of 20 Alzate was already a Priest. Alzate was a corresponding member of the Spanish and French academies of science, and a precursor of meteorology in Mexico. His literary accomplishments comprise the Gaceta de Literatura, Observaciones metereologicas, Observacion del paso de Venus por el disco del Sol, and others. Medina, Mexico, 5469 (not in Medina).         The History of Hindostan. Translated from the Persian; Translated from the Persian

      T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1770-, London 1772 - Three volumes, quarto, folding map and eight plates (including frontispieces), a fine set in handsome contemporary gilt decorated calf, spine in raised bands with red and green morocco labels, joints with some wear. A beautifully bound set of Dow's history of Bengal, illustrated with remarkable engraved plates mimicking Mughal imperial art and a folding plate illustrating the Sanskrit language.Alexander Dow (1736-1779) was a Scottish infantry officer in the employ of the East India Company. Born in Perthshire, Dow left Scotland in 1757 under a cloud, possibly fleeing the repercussions of a duel. He served for a few years as a midshipman before landing in Bengal in 1760 where he signed on as a cadet in the East India Company. Both intelligent and ambitious, he rose quickly within the ranks and as lieutenant was assigned with raising a battalion of native troops in 1763. Despite promotion to captain in the following year, Dow's fiery temperament and outspoken nature eventually caused a rift with the army elite when he complained over wages, a move that left him relegated to Britain by 1768. Here he published a translation of old Persian tales and the first two volumes of this history of India derived from the works of the Persian scholar Ferishtam. Dow eventually returned to Bengal to continue his career, but further unpleasantness with the Company administration left him back in England by 1772 where he published the third volume of this history, appending a biting attack on the governance of Bengal.Dow's was critical of entrenched corruption, cronyism and self-interest within the East India Company that stifled the possibility of wealth for generations of merchants. His essay is critical of monopoly licenses, property law, the injustices of the resident princes and appalling poverty of the peasant classes. Dow proposed a thorough revision of the status quo, including the introduction of new banking systems to provide credit and the circulation of paper money to alleviate the shortage of minted currency.Dow's History of Hindostan remains a crucial source of information on the region. In addition to his essay on the East India Company, the work contains a treatise of over 80 pages on the Hindu gods, festivals and myths that includes a fine engraved plate of the alphabet in Sanskrit.Second revised and enlarged edition of the first two volumes, first edition of volume 3.

Fine. Chez Dessaint, à Paris 1772, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 4 (19x24,8cm), relié. - Mention of tenth edition, after the original was published in 1700. It is illustrated with 38 numbered plates two folding 15 for the first volume and 23 for the second and 35 woodcuts in-text. Bound in full sheepskin vintage blonde. Back tooled raised. Part of title and volume number morocco blond. Rubbed together. The boards are cut shorter. All costs. The custody papers are not the same on 2 volumes, they have been changed. Restore the tail of volume II. Room volume number of Volume II with missing (friction) on the term Rustic. Pretty good copy, which meets more often poorly connected. Great editorial success of the eighteenth century, the rustic house is an encyclopedia of agriculture and rural life; it deals with all matters of practice and usual way: there will therefore find a chapter on bees, but also on the construction, and how to design gardens, farmyard, horses, crops, all tree and shrub species, birds, cooking, vineyards, fishing, hunting ... His success is to be able to concentrate a maximum of practical knowledge (without facilities or commonalities) a almost playful way for the reader, the chapters on garden are examples of this approach. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

[Paris]: De l¿imprimerie de L. F. de la Tour, 1772 Large copy of the first edition. $3500USD Bound in contemporary full red hand stained goatskin, with period old marble endpapers, Lavishly gilt boards and spine, representing the design shown on plate XII fig 4. 5 raised bands with title Author and date on the spine. The original bindings on these were mostly ¼ sheep with marble boards, this copy¿s previous binding apparently was beyond saving and gave a great opportunity to bind this book in the detailed way that it describes in its contents. This was one volume of the series Descriptions des Arts et Metiers (Paris 1761-88). Bernard Middleton has written a good note: ¿Plans for a scientific description of all the manufacturing processes were first conceived late in the seventeenth century, and some progress was made with the drafting of essays and engraving of plates, but this was not maintained. Although this manual was not the first [bookbinding manual] to be illustrated, it was the first to have large detailed plates which could be helpful not only to those learning binding technique but also to those who planned to make standing- and other presses. The Bookbinding section was drafted by Jacques Jaugeon, and three plates were prepared by Louis Simonneau. Apparently the publication of the first volume of Diderot¿s Encyclopédie provided the stimulus for renewed activity, so Dudin, a layman, rewrote Jaugeon¿s essay, but depended heavily on the advice of the prominent Paris binder Jean Charles Henri Le Monnier, who also arranged for him to watch books being bound. Three of Simonneau¿s plates were used, and these were supplemented with thirteen others by Nicolas Ransonnette. Highlights from the Bernard C. Middleton Collection of books on Bookbinding (2000), p. 22. Dudin¿s was an important work; there was a later augmented edition published in Paris in 1820 and modern translations into Italian (1964) and into English (1977). Apparently the publication of the first volume of Diderot's Encyclopédie provided the stimulus for renewed activity, so Dudin, a layman, rewrote Jaugeon's essay, but depended heavily on the advice of the prominent Paris binder Jean Charles Henri Le Monnier, who also arranged for him to watch books being bound. Three of Simonneau's plates were used, and these were supplemented with thirteen others by Nicolas Ransonnette.Highlights from the Bernard C. Middleton Collection of books on Bookbinding (2000), p. 22. Dudin's was an important work; there was a later augmented edition published in Paris in 1820 and modern translations into Italian (1964) and into English (1977).

Alessandria: Nella stamperia d'I. Vimercati, 1772. First Edition. Good antiquarian condition. Two volumes, 8vo. [2], 349, [1]; 296 (i.e. 302) pp. Collation: Vol. 1: [pi]4 A-Y8 (gathering "O" misbound inside-out). Vol. 2: A-S8 T4. Vol. 1 has etched title-page. Vol. 2 has etched vignette on title-page. Ornamental head and tail pieces throughout both volumes. Early ownership inscription on verso if first blank leaf (vol. II without first blank). Original "temporary" bindings of thick pastepaper, covered with contemporary decorated paper by the papermaker Pierre-Fiacre Perdoux (spines soiled; joints chipped and strengthened with glue at an early date, some moderate foxing or browning throughout). This collection of poems is distinguished by the inclusion of a long poem IN PRAISE OF COFFEE (vol. II, pp. 104-113) which is apparently unrecorded in the standard literature on the subject (no copy in the Bancroft Library). Herein the author (Francesco Eugenio Guasco) gives the inexorable truth about coffee: "Del caffe, che le mie noie consola, medicina del celabro, e del petto, delizia del palato, e della gola." Additionally there another interesting poem by Guasco IN PRAISE OF THE TAROT (vol. II, pp. 114-122) which the author calls "Bagattultimo." It effectively an ironic satire, taking the Magician ("Bagatto") as the main figure of the game. This poem is described in great detail by Tarot authority Andrea Vitali in his "Il Giuoco del Bagattultimo: In lode del Dilettevol Giuoco volgarmente chiamato il Bagattultimo" (Le Tarot: Associazione Culturale online) and even gives a full transcription of it. Our copy is bound in contemporary boards that were covered in decorated floral papers BOLDLY SIGNED BY THE PAPERMAKER Pierre-Fiacre Perdoux: "A Orleans Chez Perdoux No 369." Perdoux was an Orleans print publisher; he began his career in the shop of Jean-Baptiste Sevestre (1728-1805), likewise of Orleans. In 1771 Perdoux went into business for himself. His venture was successful: by 1773 his is recorded as a book-seller, and by 1779 he began selling wallpaper and publishing popular prints. At some point Perdoux acquired the stock of woodblocks owned by Sevestre and Jean Le Blond (Sevestre's father-in-law). From 1789 his principal occupation was in publishing political and satirical prints. He retired in 1805, at which time his stock to his son-in-law Huet. Another instance of Perdoux's signed decorated paper is in the Olga Hirsch Collection at the British Library (Hirsch J 1397) which is labeled "No. 416" on the sheet. LITERATURE: N. Garnier, L'imagerie populaire francaise. The "Rime del Signor Cavaliere D. Alessandro Sappa" is decidely uncommon in the United States: OCLC lists just 5 copies, two of which are seriously defective: the LC copy lacks numerous leaves from vol. 1, and HRC lacks vol. 1 altogether. PROVENANCE: In both volumes the bookplate of a hanged Pierrot accompanied by the famous French / Latin cabalistic spell "Aspice Pierrot pendu..." which was thought to protected one's property.

A Candid Disquisition of the Principles and Practices of the Most Antient and Honourable Society of Free and Accepted Masons; .

      - [Boston] London; Printed: Reprinted and sold by Brother William M'Alpine, Boston 1772. Octavo sheep (publisher's? - the endpapers seem to be on identical paper to the text stock; a little scuffed); [4],xiv,[2],256pp. Generally foxed but still a very good, quite crisp copy; absolutely original. An inscription erased from inside the front board but handsomely inscribed on the second blank: 'Stephen Meeds's Book 1774'. 'A veritable gem for English Masonic collectors to look out for (it may be for years, it may be forever), as it is excessively rare'. (Sale catalogue of Charles W. Frederickson, sold in New York by Bangs in 1897). Maybe a little hyperbolic as I have found three copies sold in auction in the 20th century; the last one (1994, miscatalogued as London 1772) was cheap ($250) but seemed a pretty horrible copy. Calcott's book was first published in London in 1769 and it both superseded the first authoritive text, Anderson's 'Constitutions' (1723 and revised in 1738), and did much to heal the schism between Ancient and Modern Freemasonry that lasted into the early 19th century. Calcott himself remains obscure, he seems to have been something of a mendicant scholar, of whom Mackey said: 'It is a romantic fact . that words written down in 1750 or 1760 by this only half-known, gentle, much wandering man, two or three times described in Lodge Minutes as 'in unfortunate circumstances,' should afterwards be on the tongues of millions of men who have never so much as heard his name!' Mackey says that he was known to be in America twice, in the Carolinas, and it is possible that he visited New York and Boston. The Frederickson catalogue goes on to claim this as perhaps the first 'purely' American Masonic book of any importance. Now this is disingenuous; it doesn't seem likely that neither Frederickson nor Bangs' cataloguer didn't know of Benjamin Franklin's 1734 printing of Anderson's 'Constitutions'. So the claim then hinges on the American content of the two books. In between all I can find are Joseph Green's satirical squibs printed in Boston and a Masonic songbook briefly believed to be printed in Quebec in 1765 but actually printed in Scotland. We have a list of 405 subscribers in the Provinces of Massachusetts, New York, and Nova Scotia, the Colony of Connecticut; as well as the details of the three Boston Lodges. And we have nine songs not included in the London edition. By the way, the American Antiquarian Society notes that the only oratorio libretto that they can find printed in America before 1815 is 'Solomon's Temple' printed here, just before the extra nine songs. Stephen Meeds is listed as a private in the Westford company of minutemen who turned out for the first battle of the revolution on April 19th 1775 (Joseph Warren was, by the way again, a Grand Master and subscribed for six copies, and Paul Revere and fellow rider John Pulling are among the subscribers to this book). He reappears here and there among revolutionary documents: he signed the Association Test in Portsmouth in 1776 and he is listed as a Lieutenant of Marines on the Portsmouth privateer 'Raleigh' in 1777.         Ellis's Husbandry, Abridged and methodized: Comprehending the Most Useful Articles of Practical Agriculture.

London: Printed for W. Nicoll. 1772 - FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 213 x 123 mms., pp. xx, 516; [viii], 528 [529 - 567, 568 blank], including half-title in volume 1, contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines, green morocco numbering labels; fragments of title labels, joints very slightly cracked but quite firm, corners worn, but a very good set, with G. E. Fussell's autograph on the verso of the front free end-paper in volume, below a contemporary inscription, "Henry Christopher Wise his Book/ with Profit improving, therein may be had/ Monday May 19th 1777." William Ellis (c. 1700 - 1758) wrote a number of books on agriculture, the value of which was sometimes disputed by farmers. The present work is an abridgment of an eight-volume The Modern Husbandman, published in instalments and finished by 1744, though some of Ellis's other works are referenced in the abridgment. In her ODNB entry on Ellis, Anne Pimlott Baker comments, "Ellis's Husbandry Abridged and Methodized, a compendium of all his works on agriculture, appeared in 1772 in two volumes, and the editor defended Ellis, claiming that many of his observations were valuable." A similar observation was made when the book was reviewed in The Monthly Review in 1772, with the reviewer describing Ellis as a "rough diamond" and his various work son agriculture forming a "rude, indigested heap." He condludes favourably, "[W]e shall readily acknowledge that we think the public is obliged to [the Editor] for what he has done; as the sterling sense of this writer, which lay scattered through so enormous a mass of dross, was certainly worth the extracting. We could have wished that The Editor. had done something more than merely drawing his pen through the superfluous passages; that he had not been so very sparing of his notes; that he had attended more to the accuracy of his Author's language." George E. Fussell (1889 - 1990), whose copy this was, alludes to the book on page 6 of More Old English Farming Books., 1731 to 1793 (1950). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Voyage round the World Performed by Order of His most Christian Majesty, in the Years 1766, 1767, 1768, and 1769 in the Frigate La Boudeuse, and the store-ship L'Etoile

London: J. Nourse and T. Davies, 1772. Quarto, five folding maps and folding plate of Tahitian canoes, a couple of repaired short tears to the plates; a few spots through the text, owner's ink note at start; contemporary half calf, elaborately gilt flat spine with red morocco label, marbled sides; overall a very attractive copy. First English edition, by Forster. First English edition of the first French circumnavigation, translated and with an introduction by Johann Reinhold Forster (according to the preface, although the translation at least is now thought to have been the work of Forster's son Georg). Forster senior calls the voyage 'a work written by a learned, intelligent, and judicious traveller, which abounds with remarkable events and curious observations...', and says that he has edited 'and partially vindicated the British nation where we thought the author had been unjustly partial'.Bougainville sailed from Nantes in November 1766 to the Falkland Islands. They picked up a supply ship, the Etoile, and both ships passed through the Strait of Magellan in January 1768, spent time looking for the mythical "Davis Land", said to be off the Chilean coast, and then started on a direct route across the Pacific. Bougainville discovered the Tuamotus, and in April sighted and thought he had discovered Tahiti, not knowing that Wallis had been there the previous year. He visited Samoa, sailed through Melanesia, sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and passed through the Solomons, and New Britain, to Batavia. It was in fact only the Great Barrier Reef that prevented Bougainville landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros' "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the obvious barrier presented by the Reef. Had he made it, 'he would have come to the Australian coast near Cooktown, and would, likely enough, have been wrecked where Cook was wrecked two years later...' (Wood).

        Catulli, Tibulli, et Propertii Opera

Small 8vo. Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1772. Small 8vo, 276 pp. Original vellum, gilt rules with floral pattern, green and red morocco backstrip labels. Front joint weakening, minor rubbing to forecorners, else remarkably fine. Baskerville's "12mo" edition of the complete works of the three Roman poets, published soon after his quarto edition. The title-page seems to be in the state with the oversized 'T' in Catullus (although the discrepancy is minute); and A2 uncancelled. The vellum binding with six decorative morocco backstrip labels is elegant and handsome, as is the stencilled bookmark of I. W. Hanmer, Ch[rist] Ch[urch], with his ink signature dated 1797. The brightly marbled endpapers in orange and pink colors may indicate an origin for the binding from Baskerville?s binder, who used unusually bright marbled endpapers. Gaskell 45.

Contemporary mottled calf, elaborately gilt with gilt leather label, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Three bookplates on the front pastedown. Small ink library stamp on half title and titlepage, an occasional fox mark, short repaired tear to verso of folding plan. Internally clean. Very good, a tall handsome copy, with wide margins. A rare account of a scientific expedition to observe astronomical phenomena in California. Astronomer Jean Chappe d?'Auteroche, who had observed the transit of Venus in Siberia in 1761, was sent by the French government to Baja California to observe it again when it reappeared on June 3, 1769. The transit is illustrated in the plate facing p.96. En route to Baja, Chappe d'Auteroche made stops in Vera Cruz, Guadalajara, and San Blas. "A thrilling account of a race against time to reach Lower California before the transit of Venus occurred. After nerve-racking delays, which began in Spain, and narrow escapes from disaster, the goal was reached late in May. Two days after the transit was observed a malignant fever spread through the little group and Chappe d?'Auteroche, who nursed the sick and dying, took it himself and died on the first of August. Mr. Cowan is quite incorrect in his note on this book, saying 'this celestial phenomenon was visible only upon the coast of California.' It was in fact visible throughout the western hemisphere and expeditions to observe it were sent to numerous stations. Also Spain not only knew of the expedition, but in the end co-operated in every way to make it a success" - Streeter. Includes a large folding plan of Mexico City.         A set of 25 [of 26] alphabet cards taken from Wynne's Choice Emblems, Natural, Historical, Fabulous, Moral, and Divine, for the Improvement and Pastime of Youth

Each card measures portrait: 10.6 x 6.8 cm. Each has the letter in upper and lower case above a hand-coloured wood engraved emblem, beneath which is a single word that sums up the quality of character depicted in the emblem; below a five line moral, with each word are divided into syllables. Each card has a decorative border. Lacking the card for F. A facsimile supplied from a variant set in the Cotsen collection. There is some minor spotting and browning and soiling; 4 of the cards have creases - 'Z ' being particularly creased and consequently frail; else a very good set contained in a recent folding drop-backed morocco gilt box. The cards were probably issued in a printed wrapper, without which it is impossible to determine the publisher or the date. However, the paper is clearly 18th century, and the publisher is probably the firm of Newbery. The first two editions of Wynne's Choice Emblems (1772 & 1775) were issued solely by the publisher George Riley; the third and fourth editions jointly by Riley and a member of the Newbery family. From the fifth edition onwards, until John Harris took over the firm of Elizabeth Newbery, all editions were issued solely with the Newbery imprint. Alphabet cards of this date are of the greatest rarity. Teaching aids and games, issued by the firm of Newbery, with one or two exceptions in the case of table games, are virtually unheard of.Rare. Previously known only by the set held at The Cotsen Children's Library.

Two days after the transit was observed a malignant fever spread through the little group and Chappe d’Auteroche, who nursed the sick and dying, took it himself and died on the first of August.
