THE HISTORY OF THE LATE WAR IN NORTH-AMERICA, AND THE ISLANDS OF THE WEST-INDIES, INCLUDING THE CAMPAIGNS OF MDCCLXIII AND MDCCLXIV AGAINST HIS MAJESTY'S ENEMIES

London, 1772. Large quarto. 20th-century red morocco, richly gilt, t.e.g., gilt inner dentelles, by Worsford. Some light shelf wear. Light scattered foxing to contents. Some maps reinforced or repaired discreetly with linen in gutter margin. Very good. The best contemporary account of the French and Indian War, justly celebrated for its cartography and textual content, and one of the great rarities of colonial Americana, complete with all maps and the elusive errata leaf. Virtually all of Mante's account relates to the war in North America, with detailed narratives of Braddock's campaign and the other frontier and Canadian campaigns of the conflict. The work is particularly desirable for its contemporary descriptions of Pontiac's War, a campaign in which the author participated as major of brigade to Colonel Dudley Bradstreet. In addition, the introduction includes an interesting account of young George Washington's escape in 1753 from assassination by an Indian who acted as his interpreter and guide. Mante evidently took great care to gather information that was both historically and cartographically accurate for the present work. The maps are praised by all bibliographers as being by far the best relating to the war, and include several seminal maps which are the most accurate produced to that time. They comprise: 1) "Fort Beau Sejour, & the adjacent Country Taken Possession of by Colonel Monckton" 2) "Lake Ontario to the Mouth of the River St. Lawrence" 3) [Map of Lake George and vicinity] 4) "A Plan of Fort Edward & Its Environs on Hudsons River" 5) "Communication Between Albany & Oswego" 6) "Attack on Louisbourg" [by Amherst & Boscawen] 7) "The Attack of Ticonderoga" [by Major General Abercromby] 8) "Plan of Fort Pitt or Pittsbourg" 9) "Guadaloupe" 10) "Attack on Quebec" [by Wolfe & Saunders] 11) "A Sketch of the Cherokee Country" 12) "The River Saint Lawrence from Lake Ontario to the Island of Montreal" 13) "A Plan of the Attack upon Fort Levi" 14) "River St. Lawrence from Montreal to the Island of St. Barnaby...& the Islands of Jeremy" 15) "A View of the Coast of Martinico Taken by Desire of Rear Adml Rodney" 16) "Part, of the West Coast, of the Island of Saint Lucia" 17) "Plan of the Retaking Newfoundland" [by Colville & Amherst] 18) "Attack of the Havanna" [by Albemarle & Pococke] Sabin writes of this great rarity: "Copies with all the maps are scarce. It is probable that but few were printed, though the large and beautiful plans and military maps (which gave it so great a value), must have made its production a work of much expense.

      - Amsterdam, J.C. Sepp, 1772-1781. 9 parts (bound in 4 volumes). Folio (443 x 270mm). With 473 handcoloured engraved plates (of which 425 depict birds). Contemporary half vellum. A splendid work, beautifully coloured. In 1749-1776, the works of Edwards 'A natural history of uncommon birds' and 'Gleanings of natural history' and Catesby 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands' were translated into German and combined into one work under the title 'Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel'. Catesby's work is considered 'the most famous colorplate book of American plant and animal life' (Hunt). The plates of Edwards and Catesby were re-engraved by Seligmann, further embellished by the addition of figures of plants not present in the originals. The present work is a translation of the German edition into Dutch by Houttuyn with Seligmann's plates. The Dutch edition was published by the famous Dutch publisher Sepp, a company which exercised the utmost care in producing colour-plate books of outstanding quality. The colouring of the Dutch edition seems to be more delicate than the other editions. An unusual clean and fine set of this rare ornithological classic, of which according to the list in volume I, only 90 copies were subscribed. The Dutch edition is the most complete edition having 473 plates. The German edition has 447 plates and the French edition 422 plates.Fine Bird Books, pp. 73-74; Landwehr 180; Nissen IVB, 857 & ZBI, 845; Zimmer I, 200.

The European Part of the Russian Empire with Several Countries that are the Theatre of the Present War between the Turks and the Russians / The Asiatic Part of the Russian Empire with the adjacent Coast of North America

London: Robert Sayer, 1772. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original outline hand coloring. Image measures 18 3/4 x 51". This large scale map of the Russian Empire covers the European as well as the Asian portions of Russia. Extends from the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea east to include an unusual mapping of Kamchatka, and beyond to the speculatively mapped Alaskan Peninsula of North America. Includes Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic. Includes parts of neighboring China, Poland and parts of Scandinavia. Intricately detailed, notes numerous town, with topography beautifully rendered in profile. Based on d'Anville's map, perhaps the most interesting feature is the mapping of the largely unexplored northeast portion of Asia. The mysterious Company's Land or "Land of the Company according to the Dutch" and "Land seen by Jean de Gama" as well as the Strait of Vries are identified. Company's Land and Gamma Land were considered to be the early mappings of the Kurin Islands discovered by Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. They believed that these islands were part of America, which was separated from Asia by the Strait of Vries. In 1729, Bering finally debunked their myth, but the islands appeared in maps for another 50 years. Bering's Island is identified, where the great Arctic explorer ultimately died in 1741. The conjectural mapping of North America includes the note "Some pretend that this Land may be seen from Bering's Island. The "Present War between the Turks and the Russians" mentioned in the title refers to the Russo-Turkish wars fought between the 16th and 20th century, the longest series of conflicts in the history of Europe. Printed on two sheets, joined together (as issued). In very good condition with minor foxing. Some wear and toning along folds. Edge wear. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This beautiful, large-scale map is an impressive example of his work.

Fitz-Stephen's Description of the City of London, Newly Translated from the Latin Original; with a Necessary Commentary. A Dissertation on the author, Ascertaining the Exact Year of the production, is Prefixed (BULL-FIGHTING)

B.White, London 1772 - Title concludes: 'and to the whole is subjoined, a Correct edition of the original, with the various readings, and some useful annotations by an antiquary'. ix, 81, 1 (ads.) pp. along with 10 pages of very neat contemporary ink manuscript notes. A scarce book originally published in an edition of just 250 copies. With a provenance of having come out of the library of Henry B. H. Beaufoy with his bookplate pasted to the front paste-down. In period marble-papered boards - leather to corners. The spine appears to have been re-backed in the nineteenth or early twentieth century with five raised bands and gilt embossed text. The book bound with ten pages of manuscript notes to the rear and, a neat ink provenance for them in probably another hand along with signature I can't read. The manuscript additions apply to the above title but also to Cooke's Patriarchal and Druidical Religion - the manuscript additions for this are according to this information by the Rev'd Joshua (?) Greene who was presumably also responsible for the manuscript additions to this title. Perhaps still more interestingly, most of the final three pages of notes describe in great detail the practice of bull-fighting in Spain - this could well appeal to a collector of books/ephemera on bull-fighting. Toning to the corners of the paste-downs and endpapers - appears to be the result of some acidity in the glue used on the leather corners - with slight paper loss to the rear endpaper. 3 ink letters stamped to the front paste-down. Some splitting to both the front and rear hinges - though boards remain firm. A little rubbing to the leather on the outer hinge. Rubbing to paper of marbled boards. Slight paper loss to inner hinge corner of the rear endpaper. Slight or light scattered foxing perhaps most noticable to the title page - but not heavy. The margins remain good. A very good copy of a scarce publication with unique and charming manuscript notes. Shipping from the UK [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Blackstone translated English common law into layman's terms and as the colonial legal system, and afterwards, that of the United States, was based upon the English legal system, it was as important a text in America as in England. Bell justifies his piracy of this work by saying that his edition helps the American economy by keeping the monies here and that his edition will also be a great deal more economical for the purchasers. From his advertisement in Volume I, "The inhabitants of this continent have now an easy and advantageous opportunity of effectually establishing literary manufactures in the British colonies, at moderate prices calculated for this meridian, the establishment of which will absolutely and eventually produce mental improvement, and commercial expansion, with the additional recommendation of positively saving thousands of pounds to and among the inhabitants of the British empire in America.-Thus-The importation of one thousand sets of Blackstone's Commentaries, manufactured in Europe, at ten pounds per set, is sending near ten thousnad pounds across the great Atlantic ocean." A 22 page subscriber's list in the fourth volume including many prominent people such as: John Dunlap, Printer; John Jay; Sir William Johnson; Andrew Oliver and Edmund Quincy. There are quite a few of the "Signers of the Declaration" on the subscriber's list including: John Adams, William Ellery, Philip Livingston, Thomas McKean, Lewis Morris, Robert Morris, John Morton, Cesar Rodney, George Ross, Richard Stockton, Roger Sherman, James Smith, George Taylor and Matthew Thornton. This publication was the first major undertaking by Robert Bell in his printing and publishing business. Known best to his contemporaries as an auctioneer, he has been credited with having done more than any other printer in the Colonies to promote the reading of the classics (Oswald). The first volume of Blackstone contains 4 pages advertisements and notices from Bell including his notice "To the American World" explaining his "buy American" theory and the advertisements pertain to the works of Hume, Ferguson and Robertson as well as Blackstone. Also a list of subscribers, from May 1769 to June 1772. To which is prefixed, the historical account of this institution, with remarks on the usefulness of it

London, MDCCLXXII [1772]. 12mo., xi + (1) + 62 + (2) + 139 + (1)pp., with an engraved title-page, contemporary calf, spine fully gilt in compartments with flower and leaf devices within raised bands, red morocco label, just the smallest snag at foot of spine, but still a fine copy originally from the library of Sir Timothy Waldo, one of the original subscribers,> with his armorial bookplate on pastedown. First edition: rare. Higgs 5565. Not in Goldsmiths. [ESTC, OCLC & COPAC find only a few libraries with copies: 6 in B.Isles, but only Harvard, Houghton Lib., elsewhere]. The 'historical account' (62pp.) was written by Jonas Hanway himself for it was he who, in 1756, had got together a group of shipowners and merchants to form a society to supply men and boys for the sea service and to equip them with the proper gear. During the war years, 1756-1763, some 10,625 men and boys were thus fitted out for sea duty. At the close of the war, however, the activities of the Marine Society lapsed for financial reasons until 1769 when it was left a substantial legacy. 'Now its schemes were directed chiefly toward discovering destitute or deserted boys, fitting them out, and apprenticing them in the merchant service. In 1786, the Society acquired a ship, where 150 to 200 boys would be 'separated from their evil companions, cleansed from their rags and filthiness, softened into habits of subordination and obedience, inured to gentle disciplines. In terms of numbers affected and money involved, the Marine Society developed into one of the more imposing eighteenth-century charities. During its first half century (from 1756 to 1808), over 27,500 boys were equipped for service at sea and more than 36,000 landsmen volunteers were clothed as seamen for His Majesty's ships. Receipts came to nearly £246,000.' [David Owen, English philanthropy,> 1965, p.60].

(Howes: K5) Second English edition.Pehr Kalm (in Finland also known as Pietari Kalm and in some English-language translations as Peter Kalm) was a Swedish-Finnish explorer, botanist, naturalist, and agricultural economist. He was one of the most important apostles of Carl Linnaeus. In 1747 he was commissioned by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to travel to the North American colonies and to bring back seeds and plants that might be useful to agriculture. Among his many scientific accomplishments, Kalm can be credited with the description of Niagara Falls written by a trained scientist; he described this phenomenon along the border of New York and Canada. In addition, he published the first scientific paper on the North American, 17-year periodical cicada, Magicicada septendecim. On his journey from Sweden to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kalm spent six months in England, where he met many of the important botanists of the day. Kalm arrived in Pennsylvania in 1748; there he was befriended by Benjamin Franklin and naturalist John Bartram. Kalm based his explorations at the Swedish-Finnish community of Raccoon (now Swedesboro) in southern New Jersey. This town had been founded as part of the former Swedish colony of New Sweden. There he also served as the substitute pastor of Trinity Church, the local Swedish Lutheran church. Kalm subsequently married the widow of Johan Sandin, the former pastor who had died. He remained in Raccoon until 19 May 1749. Kalm made trips as far west as Niagara Falls and as far north as Montreal and Quebec before returning to Finland in 1751. He took a post as professor at the Turku Academy. In addition to teaching and directing students, he established botanical gardens in Turku.Condition:Lacks map to volume two.         Réflexions philosophiques sur le Système de la Nature.

Londres (Neuchâtel), 1772 - Due volumi legati in un tomo in 8°, pp. 332; 344. Mezza pelle dell’epoca.

In 4, pp. (4) + DLII con 2 tavv. inc. all'acquaf. pi? volte ripiegate. ITA
