Printing and the Mind of Man describes the Encyclopedie as "a monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien régime and in heralding the French Revolution; a permanent source for all aspects of eighteenth-century civilization."

Fungorum qui in Bavaria et Palatinatu circa Ratisbonam nascuntur Icones nativis coloribus expressae. Edition Secunda.

Ratisbonae, impensis auctoris, 1772. 4 volumes bound in 2. Large-4to (270 x 225mm). With 2 engraved frontispieces and 330 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary green morocco, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments, sides with gilt borders, gilt edges. A beautifully bound copy of the finest work published in Germany on fungi. The text is in German as well as in Latin and describes the fungi of Bavaria and the Palatinate. The second edition is a reissue of the first edition which was published in 1762-1771. Four editions were published and all editions must have been very small. The text is both in Latin and German. //Schaeffer was a Bavarian clergyman-naturalist, a phenomenon so characteristic of the age of Enlightenment. His interest was broad and apart from publishing the most beautiful early iconography on fungi he published on birds, entomology and paper-making, however most of his works describe the fauna and flora of South Germany. The plates of the present work are superbly handcoloured and were drawn by Sophie Beez, I.St. Loibel, Johann Rothermund, and Schauer, and engraved by various engravers. //Nissen BBI, 1744; Stafleu & Cowan 10476.

A View of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the English Government in Bengal:

London - Printed for J. Nourse, Brotherton and Sewell and T. Evans. 1772 - A scarce copy of Verest's A View of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the English Government in Bengal. Bound in half leather with gilt lettering. Scarce. First edition. Rebound with new endpapers and professional repairs. Harry Verelst (1734 1785) was a colonial administrator with the British East India Company and the governor of Bengal from 1767 to 1769. William Bolts (1740-1808) is well-known for his exposition of the nature of exploitation and despoiling of Bengal by the East India Company and its officials. As a participant in the post-Palashi pillages, Bolts had seen very intimately how Bengal, once a prosperous region, was despoiled and bled white by the East India Company. His observations and experiences were recorded in his notable Considerations on Indian Affairs, 1772. Bolts' work is a unique source for scholars inquiring into the nature of early British rule in Bengal. Bolts, himself a private trader, had amassed immense wealth in Bengal and returned home only to lose it in defending himself in the series of lawsuits brought against him by the East India Company. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including bumping. Internally the pages are slightly browned with some mild spotting and evidence of past worming throughout, the worst of which has been repaired. Probably been in India where this is very common. There is an ink signature on the title page. Overall the condition is good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

The island of Crete and the adjacent islands of the Aegean with the new island of Santorini ... "Insuls Creta nunc Candia in sua IV Territoria distinicta, cum aliqoud adjacentibus Ægei maris Insulis imprimis Nova Santorini insula modo ante XXVII annos ex abysso marsi emersa..." "Creta nunc Candia

Greece: Augsburg, Lotter Conrad Tobias 1772. Copper engraved map of Crete with View of Iraklion after Seutter from Lotters "Atlas Novus." . Original old colour; verso blank The map shows the island of Crete, taken from the Homann map of 1712 { Zacharakis 1641/1879] with the a long text beside the newly emerged island at Santorini following the volcanic eruption of 25th May 1707: "In 1707, activity began again, the small when two cones appeared. They were called Aspronisi and Macronesi. Those were united in the course of the following five years by an island which formed between Palea and Small Kameni, much larger and higher then either and was called Nea (New) Kameni .This island, is the youngest island in Greece."[Santorini Living ] Below is a panaromic view of Iraklion, black & white as issued. The map was first published by Lotter's father-in-law Matthaüs Seutter in his "Atlas Novus" in 1728 who took the lower part of Homann's map re-engraved the cartouche and text and added the scale to the right half of the map. Seutter then added the panoramic view below the map. . Seutter is renowned for his detailed plans and prospects of cities which appeared in his "Atlas Novus". Decorative title cartouche with imprint of Lotter replacing that of Seutter. The vignette shows a Janissary overseeing 2 turkish sailors loading cargo; grapes and wine barrels adorn the pedestal; in the background a large sailing ship and on the mountains a herd of Kri-Kri the indiginous capricorn of Crete. The view with title to sky. Good dark impression; 4 small worm holes near title of view, 2 more near seashore of castle. The map was bound in an atlas at he left margin, but folded at centre [ hence the pairs of wormholes]; crease to left side up to the cartouche and also to upper right corner; light soiling to margins, ink stamp removed to lower right margin. A good example of a scarce prospect/map. Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717 - 1777) was a German engraver and map publisher. He married the daughter of prominent map publisher Matthaus Seutter, the Elder. Upon Seutter's retirement Lotter took control of the firm and republished many of his maps with minor updated and changes. In time, Lotter became one of the most prominent mid 18th century map publishers working in the German school. After his death in 1777, the firm was taken over by his son, Mathias Albrecht Lotter who republished and updated many of his father's maps. Seutter was an engraver, globe-maker and publisher. Born in Augsburg in 1685, the son of a goldsmith. Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg in 1697, apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann. in 1707 later he returned to Augsburg subsequently working in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in the city. He founded the Seutter publishing house and print shop in 1710, producing maps, atlases, and globes., which became a primary competitor to Homann. Very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and none of the necessary connections to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Therefore Seutter copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models (approximately 500 pieces). His "Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt' appeared in 1725 with 46 maps: the "Atlas Novus" various editions in 1728, 1730, 1736, 1742; the "Grosser Atlas" in 1734 with 131 maps, and the pocket atlas "Atlas minor in 1744 with 64 maps. After Matthäus Seutter died in 1757, his son, Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the business for five more years. Johann Baptist Homann (1664 ?" 1724) from 1687 Homann worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece "Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt" Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, in business until 1848, known as "Homann Erben", "Homanniani Heredes", "Heritiers de Homann" abroad.         A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening

London: Printed by W. Griffin, Printer to the Royal Academy; sold by Him and T. Davies, Bookseller to the Royal Academy; also by J. Dodsley; Wilson and Nicoll; J. Walter and P. Elmsley,, 1772. Quarto (260 × 205 mm) Contemporary finely sprinkled calf, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, and black morocco crested label in the first, floral devices gilt to the other six. Fully engraved title page incorporating superb allegorical vignette to the title page by Bartolozzi after Cipriani, large medallic head-piece to the dedication leaf. Somewhat rubbed at the extremties, careful restoration of the joints and corners, light tan-burn to first and last few leaves, light browning else. First edition. Chambers had made three voyages to China as supercargo on Swedish East India Company ships, and as such was the "first European … to have studied Chinese architecture at first hand" (ODNB). In 1757 he published his Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, Dresses, Machines and Utensils, " the first time Chinese architecture was presented as a subject worthy of the kind of serious study formerly reserved for Western antiquity", a work which missed the high-point of British chinoiserie, but had considerable influence in continental Europe. His essay Of the Art of Laying out Gardens, was better received at home, being reprinted in the Gentleman's Magazine and in the Annual Register in 1758, where Edmund Burke regarded it as 'much the best that has been written on the subject', and again in 1762 by Bishop Thomas Percy in Miscellaneous Pieces Relating to the Chinese. "It recognized that nature must be improved by ingenious artifice and subtle deception. The union of art and nature that Chambers saw as having a Chinese pedigree was one of the themes of his gardens at Kew, but was also the cause célèbre of his Dissertation on Oriental Gardening in 1772, a disguised attack on the landscape gardening of Capability Brown which misfired with the public. Chambers was forced to publish a second edition in 1773, to which he annexed an 'Explanatory discourse'. Nevertheless, the Dissertation contains some remarkably prescient suggestions, such as colour gradation in planting and the need for comprehensive country and urban planning. In essence, Chambers saw Chinese gardens as a union of art and nature, in which the gardener improved upon nature's beautiful irregularities. He believed that Capability Brown denied this in his 'natural' gardens based upon arboreal and landscape modelling" (ODNB). Contemporary ownership inscription of Henry Wm. Bunbury, "Geoffrey Gambado", artist and caricaturist to the front pastedown and title page, engraved armorial bookplate of his son Sir Henry Edward Bunbury to the front pastedown.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION: Third English edition of this very rare account to South America. Hardly browned, only marginal damages to paper, altogether very nice copy in great modern calf binding, blind tooled and with fragments of original spine labels mounted. 2 Bände. The third edition.. Jahrhunderts."This voyage arose out of the desire of the French Government (through the Academy of Sciences at Paris) to send certain members of the Academy of Sciences to measure a degree of longitude in the equinoctial countries of Peru. This request was not only accorded in the most courteous manner, but the King of Spain conceived the idea of sharing the honor of a scheme devoted to the advancement of knowledge, and sent two of the most scientific officers of the Spanish navy to accompany the expedition. This party carried on a series of operations of unexampled difficulty and encountered hardships and sufferings which demanded the strength of the strongest constitutions and the energy of minds stimulated by a love of science. Much information was collected and published, which has been reproduced in other works on South America" (Cox).

1772 - Diderot made this map illustrating important discoveries and voyages from Spain and Russia to western North America in 1772. The remarkably well maintained, copper plate engraved map still has crisp, even, hand coloring as issued distinguishing major geographical/political realms. An inset shows islands in the Mer de Tartarie. The discrepancies between today's knowledge of the North American coast and how it was mapped in the 1700's makes this beautiful and rare map a significant historical document.
