Observations on different Kinds of Air. By Joseph Priestley, LL.D.F.R.S. (Caption title: "Read March 5,12,19,26,1772").

(London, 1772). 4to. Bound in a fine recent brown hmorocco in old style, gilt back. In: Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society pp. 147-264 (vol. 62) and 1 folded engraved plate (P.Basire Sc.). A fine large copy, broad margins, printed on good paper, clean and fine throughout.. First edition of this important tract, which marked an epoch in the history of chemistry. As it is Priestley's first extensive work on Gases, it foreshadowed his identification of Oxygen."The paper here, for which the Royal Society awarded Priestley the Copley medal announced the discovery of hydrochloric acid and nitric oxide and the use of the latter in measuring the purity of air, which led through the work of Cavendish, Fontana and others to exact eudiometry. Priestley also observed that plants consume carbon dioxide and gave out oxygen, thereby purifying air which has been vitiated by combustion, respiration and putrefaction, and that this action takes place only under daylight." (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 217)."In this paper he also announced two new gases that he had obtained - nitrous oxide and carbonic oxide; these won him the Royal Society's Copley medal. Two years later his experiments in heating red oxide of mercury produced "dephlogisticated air" which was announced in 1775 and identified by Lavoisier as oxygen." (Dibner Heralds of Science No. 40).The work contains a proposal to saturate water with carbonic acid under either atmospheric or increased pressure, which led to the creation of the mineral-water industry. The Centenary of the discovery of oxygen was celebrated at Priestley's American home at Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and was followed in 1876 by the foundation of the American Chemical Society.         Poemetti filosofici

Eredi di Bartolomeo SolianiModena: Eredi di Bartolomeo Soliani, 1772 First edition. Contemporary speckled sheep over speckled boards, gilt flat spine with reddish-brown paste-paper lettering piece. . Octavo. Wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces A few wormholes, front cover a little rubbed. Occasional light foxing, but overall a very good, clean copy. With early twentieth-century stamp Fratelli Campori on front free endpaper. Giovanni Battista Vicini (1709-1782), poet and translator, was called by Baretti "uno dei magni poetastri d'Italia." He produced several collections of poems, both sacred and secular. He worked at the Ducal court in Modena and dedicated this work to Ipolito Giuliano Bellincini-Bagnesi, chamberlain to Duke Francesco III. The title indicates that the poems contained here are of a scientific nature. One of the longer poems is on the botany and use of trees, entitled "La favela, ed il canto degli arbori et dei fiori," which is both on the subjects of agriculture and natural history. Another poem, "I colori" deals with Newton's color theory, in particular his diffraction of sunlight with a prism.

        Doorway to Vatican Loggia [A]

Rome: 1772. Copper engraving by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand- colouring. Good condition. Three repaired tears to the left blank margin. Sight size: 31 1/8 x 18 1/4 inches. 30 1/4 x 17 1/8 inches. A highly decorative print from the famous "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" series, with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. A very fine image from the first part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. This remarkable print, one of the first to be published of the decoration of the Logge on the main storey of the Vatican apartments, was probably planned as early as 1760, but was not executed until between 1772 and 1776. The project as a whole was carried out by the painter Gaetano Savorelli, the draughtsman Ludovico Teseo, the architect Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. The plate is remarkable not only as the first important visual record of Raphael's work, but also for the quality of the hand-colouring - the work on this image is, in our opinion, some of the greatest to be produced in Europe during the whole of the eighteenth century: the golden age of the hand- coloured print. The whole series was of importance not just for the size and magnificent colouring of the prints, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and stimulated the taste for the "grotesque" in the neo-classical period.
