Essai de Cristallographie, ou Description des Figures Géométriques, Propres à différens Corps du Regne Minéral, connus vulgairement sous le nom de Cristaux

Paris: Chez Didot jeune, Knapen & Delaguette, 1772 Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (199x121 mm), [iii]-xxxii, 427, [3] pp. including half title, 2 folding tables, 10 folding engraved plates. Contemporary French mottled sheep (worn, corners scuffed, spine label gone, hinges split), marbled endpapers, title-page with old ownership inscription, interior little browned, occasional spotting. ----

Norman 1847; Wellcome 4, 553; Burke, Origins of the Science of Crystals, 1966: 69-71; Dana's 7th (Bibliography): 69; DSB: 11, 520-4 [by R. Hooykaas]; Freilich Sale Catalog: nos. 460-1; Hoover Collection: no. 691; Hooykaas, R., "De kristallografie van J.B. de Romé de l'Isle (1783)". - First Edition, Scarce. "The Cristallographie ranks as one of the great contributions to the science of crystals. In it Romé de l'Isle attempted to make a comprehensive classification of crystals. By the time he wrote this volume, he was extremely familiar with the subject, and this work greatly supassed all previous works in scope and detail. To apply his classification, he adopted a morphological approach in which he attempted to relate the diverse forms of crystals of the same substance. As a general morphological concept he introduced the idea of the "primitive form." All crystals of the same inorganic substance, no matter how different in appearance had a fundemental and common geometrical form-the primative form-to which their actual crystal shapes related. The justification for this idea was derived from the previous work of Carl Linneaus who had tried to expain the genesis of minerals by means of an analogy with the procreation of living creatures, and classified cystals by the similarities of their crystallized forms. In this first edition of the Cristallographie, Romé de l'Isle identifies 110 crystal forms by which minerals crystallize. Grouped under each of these shapes are described the minerals that exhibit similar habit, including the approximate angles between crystal faces. These forms were all derived form a common saline ingrediaent in every mineral that worked at a molecular level. Although he believes that these primitive forms existed, it is never made clear how they should be defined for any group of crystals" (Mineralogical Record Bibliography)..

Première Introduction à la philosophie économique; ou analyse des Etats policés. Par un disciple de l'Ami des Hommes. [Bound with:] BADEN-DURLACH, Karl Friedrich von. Abrégé des Principes de l'Économie Politique. Carlsruhe and Paris: Lacombe, 1772.

Paris: Didot, Delalain, Lacombe, 1771: Carlsruhe and Paris: Lacombe, 1772. - 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (190 x 120). Nineteenth-century polished calf and marbled boards, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco spine label. Very good copies. Printer's device on title. I: First edition of Baudeau's finest economic work, "a compendious statement of Quesnay's views which, for clearness as well as for certain touches of originality, is far superior to anything from the pen of Mirabeau, Du Pont de Nemours, or Le Mercier de la Rivière" (Cossa). Baudeau here brilliantly refutes the Abbé Galiani, whose Dialogues sur le Commerce des Bleds had been published the previous year. The work is written in clear and simple terms ? Turgot called it "un livre très clair et écrit, sur la fin, avec une chaleur douce qui en rendait la lecture intéressante" (quoted in Weulersse) ? and met with great success as a general introduction to physiocratic thought. II: Very rare first separate edition, first published in the Ephémérides du Citoyen in January 1772. The work is divided into four sections, dealing with the natural requirements of man, society, reproduction, and the outlay of land-owners. Baden-Durlach was the only head of state to actually apply Physiocratic principles to the ruling of a country, a fact overlooked by Adam Smith when he wrote that "that system which represents the produce of land as the sole source of revenue and wealth of every country has, so far as I know, never been adopted by any nation, and it at present exists only in the speculations of a few men of great learning and ingenuity in France A system which never has done, and probably never will do, any harm in any part of the world" (Wealth of Nations, quoted in Higgs, The Physiocrats). Schumpeter lists the Première Introduction as one of the four principal textbooks of physiocrat orthodoxy, writing: "The Abbé Nicolas Baudeau (1730?92) began as an enemy [of physiocracy] but had his day of Damascus in 1766 and from then on proved a most useful popularizer and controversialist as well as an efficient editor" (p. 225). He further calls the Abrégé "the fourth and best" textbook of Physiocrat orthodoxy, whilst Higgs cites it as "a commendable précis of physiocracy" (The Physiocrats, 1897, p. 86). Baudeau: Einaudi 349; Higgs 5158 ('The best of his works'); INED 291; Kress S.4657; Mattioli 232; not in Goldsmiths'. A fascinating 239 piece archive of John Wormley, Esq., founder of the town of Wormleysburg in Pennsylvania. Several legal documents and items relating to the famous Susquehanna bridge

Archive consisting of 239 pieces, various dates, relating to John Wormley and his estate which became Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania. The most interesting aspect of this archive is the rich history of Wormsleyburg's founder and the sad demise of his fortune. Rich in land but otherwise poor, John Wormley owned several businesses in town and when he passed away, he left his heirs with a substantial debt. This archive contains many of his agreements to pay back money he borrowed from people. It also consists of several hundred documents including letters and legal documents from John Wormley, Esq.'s life. Wormleysburg history dates back to 1772 when John Wormley settled on the West Shore and was deeded land beside John Kreitzer from William Penn. Both Wormley and Kreitzer were farmers and became quick friends. In 1845 John Wormley, Esq. Inherited his father's estate which he sold off to buy more land from John Armstrong, Colonel under George Washington and leader of the expedition against Kittaning. The land Wormley purchased became Wormleysburg. At the time Wormleysburg had fifty dwellings, one tavern, two grocery stores, a school house, a Methodist meeting house and a handicraft village with a population of 280. The town was incorporated into a borough on May 13, 1907 after a citizens' group, started in the 1890's, pursued this action. Some of the highlights include: Several partial accounting books from stores Wormley owned. A receipt to Wormley from Conrad Doll. The receipt dated July 6, 1807 reads, "Received July the 6th, 1807 of Mr. John Wormley one of the Trustees of the Lutheran Congregation in East Pennsborough Township Cumberland County the sum of two hundred dollars towards making an organ in their church. Per me. Conrad Doll." Interesting receipt dated May 19, 1809 pertaining to the history of the Wormleysburg. This appears to be a receipt to John Wormley, Esq. For "eighty six cents for three blank books for the Susquehanna bridge . . ." In the mid 1820s Wormley ran a ferry from Harrisburg to Wormleysburg and when the bridge was built, it put his ferry operation out of business. The bridge was built in 1834 and cost $157,000. It was 5,629 feet long, fourteen feet above high water, built of all wood, and about forty feet wide; had two tracks, also, used for vehicles and foot passengers, and tow paths, the latter for the Susquehanna and Tide Water Canal. It was destroyed on July 1, 1863 during the Fight at Wrightsville. According to the Lancaster Examiner and Herald, "the confliguation was a sublime sight, the entire length being on fire at once, with the buildings at Wrightsville and floating blasting timbers in the stream. The rebels were on the other bank and the adjacent hills, and crowds of males and females on this side glaring at the sight. The fire department here was in service constantly to save the eastern end of the bridge, but it was useless. Soldiers, citizens, and freeman labored together, also the Philadelphia City Troop. The troop acted splendidly in the fight. The only Columbia volunteers in the fight were fifty-three negros, who after making entrenchments with the soldiers, took muskets and fought bravely." A legal request dated April 23, 1893 to John Wormley, Esq to hear the case between Robert Fax and Conrad Ripley. The summons reads, "Sir, you are hereby notified that you are chosen one of the referees in the above action; you are therefore required under the penalty of two dollars, to attend at the house of John Black . . . in Easthampton township, on Saturday, the 28th day of April at 1 o' clock in the afternoon to hear the said parties, their proofs and allegations, and report to me agreeably to a rule of reference which will be delivered to you, of this date . ." London: Printed for J. Nourse and T. Davies, 1772.. xxviii,476pp. plus engraved folding plate and five engraved folding maps. Quarto. Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco label. Neat repairs at head and toe of spine and to lower front joint, else very good. Provenance: Samuel Reynolds Solly (armorial bookplate). First edition in English. Bougainville first undertook, at his own expense, an expedition to the Falkland Islands and Patagonia to secure them for French colonization. To avoid potential conflict due to Spain's envy of the acquisition, France gave up the territory to her. The narrative of that expedition was related in THE HISTORY OF A VOYAGE TO THE MALOUINE ISLANDS... (Paris, 1770). After delivering the Falklands to Spain, Bougainville was ordered across the Pacific to the East Indies, and from there to return home. The narrative of this part of the voyage comprises the text of the present volume. The completion of the three-year voyage marked the first official French circumnavigation and drew a good deal of French interest in the Pacific islands. The party collected much natural history information concerning the regions visited, with a chapter on that of the Falklands, as well as a history of their settlement. They stopped at many South Sea islands, among them Tahiti, and a long section on that island is included, as well as a vocabulary of the natives. Bougainville was in Buenos Aires when the order arrived for the expulsion of the Jesuits from Paraguay, which he describes in detail. "According to the title, this translation of Bougainville's VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE... was made by Johann Reinhold Forster; it seems, however, that the actual translator was Georg Forster, while his father Johann contributed the preface, dedication and the numerous footnotes" - Hill. COX I, p.55. SABIN 6869. HILL 165. O'REILLY & REITMAN 285. BORBA DE MORAES, p.115.

Paris: 1772 - One of the first studies in comparative cartography, here are two maps of the west coast of the United States from the Strait of Anian (modern day Alaska) to the tip of Baja California, one inset on the other, and with intriguingly different interpretations of the same area. These are extracts based on maps by Vischer of 1612 and 1641, and appeared in the Supplement to Denis Diderot's Encyclopedie. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. The smaller inset map shows much more of the Strait, along with an open sea, making a suggestion of a Northwest Passage. The coastlines vary in both maps, with the smaller one listing important place names such as C. de San Francisco and los Farilones; while the larger shows the Bay of San Miguel (current day San Diego). The larger map showing a section of coast where the Sierra Nevada are drawn called "Nova Albion", which was explored and claimed for England by Sir Francis Drake; the smaller map showing the entire west coast area as "Mexicana". Image sie: 12 3/4 x 12". Paper size: 18 1/2 x 15 1/4". Pedley #473; Wagner #632; Wheat # 159.

Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette of St. Peter’s Monastery in Salzburg. Double column Latin text (occasional passages in German) with decorative chapter head and tail pieces. The dedication to Count Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach First Bishop of Salzburg contains an ornate half page engraved portrait of the Count. The text includes 76 portrait engravings representing each of the abbots of St. Peter’s from St. Rupert who founded the monastery in the late 6th or 7th century c.e. down to Beda Seeauer who became Abbot in 1753. Five small illustrations representing early monograms, seals or symbols are also included with the text. Bound in period quarter vellum with speckled paper boards – rubbed, shelf-worn; the board paper is peeling or worn away in some spots. The binding is sturdy. All edges of the book block are dyed red. The interior is generally clean with some minor scattered foxing and age-toning. A miniscule notation in an early hand is located at the end of the first paragraph in the second column of p. 95. A name plate and an early inscription are present on the inside front cover. St. Peter’s Benedictine Monastery in Salzburg is one of the oldest monasteries in the Germanic lands. Beda Seeauer (1716-1785) who was Abbot of St. Peter’s compiled this extensive chronicle of the Salzburg diocese from old sources and continued it up to his own time. The chronicle (which starts with the year 582 c.e.) contains much early source material pertinent to the medieval era as well as to later times. Uncommon. [Potthast – Wegweiser p. 1558 (under Vita St. Ruperti); Holzmann & Bohatta 9452].
