Mundi Vetus, Recens: Hinc Posterum Universale Systema. (..) Tabula Riveriana Prima

Verona. 1772. Folio. Plate mark 70 x 47,5 cm. The whole sheet 75 x 53 cm. Passe partout 81 x 58 cm. Etching / engraving. Uncut margins. Green passe partout. Two small repairs to the image area.. One small loss of surface area in the lower right corner (ca. 1 x 1 cm). Some foxing, mainly to the margins. Two small holes in the upper margin.. A wonderful print in contemporary hand colouring, which is quite uncommon. Most copies are uncoloured. It is an "allegorical composition on the order of the universe, after Boscarati,; at centre the crouched Atlas carries a globe on his back; the globe support a seasaw upon which sit Mars and Ganymede, a wind-god blows on a torch held by Hymen, who crouches on the ground and tries to shelter the torch with his wing; nearby, a nude woman with many breasts and with legs bound with a spiked belt leans on the globe; up in the sky a man brandishing a stick reclines on a cloud; on the ground, to the right, a cow (agriculture), a fish and a net (fishing) and the head of a boar (hunting)" (British Museum). There is a long explanation of the allegory in latin below the image. A man with text on his sole - "Ego Lazarus Riviera Calculando Invent" - is standing in front of a very large canvas where most of the figures are depicted. The canvas hangs from the top of the image. The print is described as the "Tabula Riveriana Prima" and executed after a painting by Felix Boscarati. "Tabula Riveriana" is a famous serie of four allegorical paintingsy Boscarati. The present print was drawn, etched and engraved by Vicentinus Christophorus ab Aqua. Boscarati was a painter active in Verona in the 18th. century. Vicentinus Christophorus ab Aqua was a reproductive etcher active in Italy in the same period. Scarce

Apologie de Monsieur le Comte de Bernstorf. Schutzschrift des Herrn Grafen von Bernstorf. [With introduction by Ludwig von Hess].

(Location and printer unknown), 1772. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt spine and five raised bands. With librarian Bølling's signature to pasted down front free end-paper. Some occasional brownspotting, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Text in French and German on opposite pages.. Scarce first edition of Bernstorff's defence speech before the King against accusations from fellow ministers. The book was declared to be a forgery, and all copies were ordered confiscated hence only a few remains in circulation. Danish chamberlain Frederik Danneskjold-Samsøe raised various different accusations against Bernstorff, the most serious being the state debt exceeded to a dangerous level due to Bernstorff's economic policy. In the present book Bernstorff managed to refute all Danneskjold-Samsøe's accusations and the many intrigues he had been exposed to. Unfortunatly Bernstorff did not live to see the effect of his publication.Goldsmiths'-Kress no. 10841.0

        Beschreibung von Arabien

Copenhagen: printed at the Hofbuchdruckerey by Nicolaus Möller,, 1772. Quarto (249 × 186 mm). Modern pale tan half morocco on marbled boards, darker tan label to spine, floral devices gilt in compartments, red edge-stain. Title page vignette of Geography and Astronomy, arms of the House Oldenburg as head-piece to the dedication, 18 plates, 4 of them folding, 2 of these coloured, 7 maps, all but one of them folding, the large map of Yemen at the rear being coloured in outline. Small library stamps of "Bibliothek Prof. Engels" to title and verso of the dedication leaf, light browning, occasional foxing, but overall a very good copy. First edition. Niebuhr trained as a surveyor in order to support himself into his majority, then receiving a small inheritance. He next studied mathematics at Göttingen before joining the Hanoverian corps of engineers. In 1760 he was invited to join the scientific expedition being sent out by Frederick V of Denmark. Originally intended for the purpose of illustrating certain passages from the Old Testament, it developed truly encyclopaedic ambitions, the party consisting of Niebuhr as surveyor, Friedrich Christian von Haven, a Danish linguist and orientalist, Peter Forrskål, a Linnaean naturalist, Christian Carl Kramer, a doctor and zoologist, Georg Baurenfeind, the expeditions artist, and Berggren, a Swedish ex-soldier. In the event Niebuhr was the only one to return. From Constantinople they proceeded to Egypt and spent a year there, ascending the Nile and visiting Suez and Mount Sinai. "Disguised as pilgrims … they left Suez in October 1762 for Jiddah, from where they advanced down the coast in a tarrad (an open boat), making frequent landings as far as Al Luhayyah in Northern Yemen" (Howgego). On their way to Mocha, Niebuhr and Forrskål contracted malaria, and on arrival von Haven died, swiftly followed by Forrskål, and by late 1763 the whole party were so ill that they were carried onto a vessel bound for Bombay. On the voyage Berggren and Baurenfeind died, followed by Kramer in early 1764, leaving Niebuhr as the only survivor, seemingly protected by his adoption of native dress and diet. Continuing alone he visited Muscat, Bushire, Shiraz, Persepolis, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, Aleppo, Cyprus, and Jerusalem. "Niebuhr described the town and its inhabitants in minute detail and made a map of the surrounding area. Continuing northward along the coast, he crossed the Taurus mountains of Turkey to Brusa and Constantinople, then made his way homeward through Poland and Germany." Niebuhr published in Denmark, under the patronage of the schizophrenic king, Christian VII, to whom the book is dedicated, the cost of the plates being defrayed by the government. Niebuhr was a remarkably conscientious and accurate observer, and this official account of his travels has long been considered one of the classic accounts of the geography, people, antiquities and archaeology of the region, his maps remaining in use for over 100 years.

Paris: Chez L.C. Desnos, 1772-1774. (19 9/16 x 13 inches). 2 parts in one volume, folio ( x inches). Engraved additional title and 85 engraved plates (the 23 in the second part by Nicolas Robert). Bound to style in 18th-century diced russia gilt, covers with triple fillet border with floral spray cornerpiece, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools. A fine copy of Desnos' edition of Jonston's work, bound with two selections of engravings by Robert: one of the greatest of all 17th century natural history artists. The main part of the present work is a French edition of Jonston's work on birds. To this is added a reissue of most of the plates from two of Robert's works on the birds of the royal menagerie at Versailles: Receuil... and Suite des Oyseaux les plus rare, both originally published in Paris in 1676. Jonston, the grandson of John Johnstone of Craigieburn, Nithsdale, Scotland, was born and raised in Poland. After studying botany and medicine at Cambridge, he travelled extensively before settling in Leiden, where he practiced medicine. Jonston is now seen chiefly as a "learned compilor" (Johnston) and published a very popular natural history (Historiae Naturalis), in 77 parts between 1650 and 1662. His sources were wide ranging, but probably the main influence was Aldrovandi (1522-1605). The first 62 plates in the present work are a reprint of the complete suite of plates from the De Avibus section of Aldrovandi's great work. The remaining 23 plates are by Nicolas Robert. Robert is one of the two greatest French natural history artists of the 17th century. He made his name illustrating the Guirlande de Julie: a jewel of a manuscript, an album of flowers given as a gift from the baron de Saint-Maure to his fiancée. Robert subsequently worked most memorably on the vélins du Roi botanical drawings and the engravings for the Académie Royale des Sciences work Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire des Plantes. Whilst working on these commissions for others he also produced his own plates, the present excellent engravings are fine examples of his work. Anker 238; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.111; Nissen IVB 484; cf. Ronsil 1503; cf. Ronsil 2599 (1st edition of Robert plates); Wood p.410.

Sthlm, C. Stolpe, 1772. 8:o. (16),234,(37) s. & 4 utvikbara grav. plr. Häftad i samtida ngt nött gråpappersomslag. Soulsby A catalogue of the works of Linnæus 3596 respektive 1223.

Observations on different Kinds of Air. By Joseph Priestley, LL.D.F.R.S. (Caption title: "Read March 5,12,19,26,1772").

(London, 1772). 4to. Bound in a fine recent brown hmorocco in old style, gilt back. In: Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society pp. 147-264 (vol. 62) and 1 folded engraved plate (P.Basire Sc.). A fine large copy, broad margins, printed on good paper, clean and fine throughout.. First edition of this important tract, which marked an epoch in the history of chemistry. As it is Priestley's first extensive work on Gases, it foreshadowed his identification of Oxygen."The paper here, for which the Royal Society awarded Priestley the Copley medal announced the discovery of hydrochloric acid and nitric oxide and the use of the latter in measuring the purity of air, which led through the work of Cavendish, Fontana and others to exact eudiometry. Priestley also observed that plants consume carbon dioxide and gave out oxygen, thereby purifying air which has been vitiated by combustion, respiration and putrefaction, and that this action takes place only under daylight." (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 217)."In this paper he also announced two new gases that he had obtained - nitrous oxide and carbonic oxide; these won him the Royal Society's Copley medal. Two years later his experiments in heating red oxide of mercury produced "dephlogisticated air" which was announced in 1775 and identified by Lavoisier as oxygen." (Dibner Heralds of Science No. 40).The work contains a proposal to saturate water with carbonic acid under either atmospheric or increased pressure, which led to the creation of the mineral-water industry. The Centenary of the discovery of oxygen was celebrated at Priestley's American home at Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and was followed in 1876 by the foundation of the American Chemical Society.         Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano

Rome: 1772-1777. Copper engraving by Volpato after a drawing by Camporesi, later professional hand-colouring. Good condition. Expert strengthening to verso of right outer blank margin, some old light creasing to 3 inches of the sheet. 25 x 16 3/8 inches. 26 3/4 x 19 1/8 inches. This beautiful perspective view of Raphael's Loggia, served as the frontispiece to the celebrated text, "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano". This arresting print is a general perspective view of Raphael's design for the Loggia at the Vatican, with a large profile portrait of Raphael in a medallion over the entrance to the corridor. The plate served as the frontispiece to the first part of the "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano", which depicted the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. This remarkable print, one of the first to be published of the decoration of the Logge on the main storey of the Vatican apartments, was probably planned as early as 1760, but was not executed until between 1772 and 1776. The project as a whole was carried out by the painter Gaetano Savorelli, the draughtsman Ludovico Teseo, the architect Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. The whole series was of importance not just for the size and magnificent colouring of the prints, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and stimulated the taste for the "grotesque" in the neo-classical period.
