6 vols. 8vo. 1 frontispiece portrait, 116 engraved folding plates depicting Nollet … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baffo Giorgio
[London or Venice ?], 1771. Large 12° (179x111 mm). [2], 250 pages, lacking the last blank leaf. Nineteenth-century half-calf, over pasteboards. Marbled covers. Spine tooled in gilt, title in gold on red morocco lettering-piece. Marbled flyleaves; edges marbled. A good copy, repair to the outer blank margin of the title-page, slight foxing in places. A few leaves browned.Rare first edition, published posthumously and clandestinely, probably in Venice or, more likely, in London, as argued by some scholars, through the efforts of Consul Joseph Smith (1682-1770), a collector of paintings and great lover of Venetian literary culture. A second edition was issued in London in 1789, and the complete, four-volume edition of all Baffo's works (Raccolta universale delle opere) appeared from the fictional place of Cosmopolis (Venice or London) in 1789 at the expense of the Earl of Pembroke, a great admirer of the poet. However, some of the poems, which had enjoyed anonymous manuscript circulation while the author was still alive, have remained unpublished until today. Baffo refused a large sum offered to him by some British travellers who wanted to see his compositions printed, and it seems that in the last years of his life he also destroyed many of his papers. Born on 1 August 1694 into a family of the small Venetian aristocracy, Giorgio (Zorzi) Baffo completed his studies in law and embarked upon the obvious professional career to which a man of his rank was entitled. Following assignments in Peschiera and Asola, he entered the Quarantie (Venice's Supreme Court) in 1732, particular … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book is in good condition, having some defects. The backstrip of the Dutch floral paper covered binding is missing, and the whole has been covered in grey paper sewn to the boards. The small text block is shaken and has had the first two leaves sewn back in, leaving them misaligned. Five leaves are missing, comprising pages 23 to 28, 93, 94, 123 and 124. The book has 57 woodcuts of the original 62. Scattered foxing and occasional handling marks throughout, though many pages are mainly clean. One leaf (pages 61-62) has a small hole, but no text or image is missing. On the rear free endpaper is inscribed Elizth Harrison Her Book March 5 1775. The edges of the pages are slightly softened, and there are some turned corners. So, a defective copy, but apparently the only one left in existence. The Cries of London As They are daily exhibited in the Streets; With An Epigram In Verse, Adapted To Each, Embellished with sixty-two elegant Cuts. To Which is added, A Description of the Metropolis In Verse Printed for F. Newbery, at the Corner of St. Paul's Church-Yard. 1771. 1st edition. Bound in original Dutch floral paper-covered boards, later oversewn with grey paper. Very rare 1st edition of Newbery's Cries of London, of which I find no other copy, only references to there being no known copy. Also a description of London in verse & by A Song on the City of London. 10cm (4 inches) tall, pagination: title, blank, i-v, 6-22, 29-92, 95-122, 125-133, plus 6pp publisher's catalog … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tasso, Torquato
Parigi: Appresso Agostino Delalain, Pietro Durand, Gio: Claudio Molini, 1771. Illustrated by Gravelot, Hubert-François. First Edition. Hardcover. Item #25082 In two volumes. 331pp; 340pp. Contemporary full mottled calf, sides with triple gilt fillets, ornate gilt spines, gilt inside dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces, titles, dedication, nineteen inserted plates, nine full-page illustrations, head-pieces, tail-pieces, all by Gravelot and engraved by Ponce, Leveau, Le Roy, Rousseau, Henriquez, and others. Rubbing and scuffs to sides and edges, three small old ink stains to bottom edge of volume one, short corner tear to one leaf. Lacks the plate for the eighteenth canto and there are some very minor markings in ink to some of the plates. From what transpires from the two old inscriptions on the front endpapers this set was donated by the Vicar of a church near Brescia to a noted scholar and professor at the University of Brescia. The ink in the markings appears to be the same as the ink in the inscription. Likely the Vicar decided to censor some of the images. A good+ set. Gamba 948. Graesse VII.33. ; Octavo. Joseph-Mathias Gérard de Rayneval,
Rousseurs. Rare ouvrage, très intéressante provenance.

The first type specimen printed by Giambattista Bodoni, rare. ?In Fregi e Majuscole we are able to see what types and ornaments Bodoni used in the earlier part of his career. They are (as he says in his very "worth-while" preface) a derivation from Fournier, but lack that precision which Bodoni embodied so characteristically in his 19th century types. They exhibit, however, his admiration for Fournier, whom he copied in a flattering but barefaced manner. Granted that the most agreeable features of the book are copied, this "specimen" of 1771 is one of the most tasteful and charming volumes of its kind in existence. Each page is surrounded with borders, of which scarcely one is bad, and scarcely two alike. The types are old style, but their delicacy shows current tendencies; and this is specially true of the italic. The Greek character is condensed and very ugly, and but one font is shown as against the twenty-eight varieties exhibited in Bodoni's Greek specimen of 1788. Bodoni's ornamented letters are modelled on those of Fournier. The 377 vignettes or ornaments (exactly the number shown in the Manuel) are mostly recut after Fournier's designs, but Bodoni's versions have less color and warmth and a certain Italian twist to them -of those shown, all but two (305 and 325) are copies or adaptations. Their arrangements as border … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robertson, William
America (Philadelphia): Printed for the Subscribers (Robert Bell), 1770; i.e., 1770-1771. First American edition. Hardcover. First edition printed in America. Three volumes. 8vo. viii,(ii),360;(xvi),374;(xlii),351,(lvii)pp., but with several errors in pagination as noted by Evans. Contemporary full sheep; spines with simple gilt rules and volume numbers in gilt; red leather lettering labels, gilt. A few notes by a former owner, including the beginning of his name on the title page of Volume 2 (Isaac Lew...) possibly a relative of Nathaniel Lewis and Mordecai Lewis who are listed on the List of Subscribers. This publication marks the substantial beginning of the introduction of European literature into America. Bell has published with it an address upon international copyright, the first on the subject. The long list of subscribers is a veritable who's who of early American history: John Adams, Jacob Giles, John Hancock (2 sets), Caesar Rodney, and so on: ''whose names posterity may respect because by these seasonable encouragements this American edition hath been accomplished at a price so moderate that the man of the woods as well as the man of the court may now solace himself with substantial delight." A two volume set was also printed that year. Evans, 11837; Sabin, 72003. Bell also brought out an edition of Blackstone in 1771. An exceedingly rare book.; if the list of subscribers is a guide, only a few hundred sets were issued. The owner's name was clipped in binding, and so will likely remain just out of reach. Near fine. Item #17232. [Attributes: First Edition]

ARENA, F.
Cosmopoli 1771. 2 volumes. 4to (235 x 180mm). pp. viii, 440; viii, 416; 167, (1), (8), with 65 folding engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, gilt decorated spines with red gilt lettered label. Second edition, probably a reissue of the first 1767-1768 Palermo edition, as it has the same number of pages. One of the rare Italian florilegia, illustrated by the author and Mario Cammareri. Both their signatures appear together in the first engraving, an allegory showing Flora, crowned with a garland of flowers, offering floral tributes to three figures - Botany (shown holding an alembic), Physics (who is looking through a magnifying glass) and Pomona (who holds a spade and a basket of fruit). "Arena states in the introduction of the first volume of his work that it was intended not only for 'florists' but for scientists too, in particular 'botanists, physicists and agriculturists'... The second volume deals with horticulture, in particular flowers. In the first sixty pages Arena describes in considerable details how to set up a flower-garden" (An Oak Spring Flora, pp.149-150). The delicately engraved plates illustrate several plant species and varieties, with one plate of parterres, and one plate of seeds, floral structures etc. Filippo Arena (1708-1789) was a Sicilian jesuit, mathematician and botanist at various Jesuit colleges: at Viterbo, and as professor of mathematics at the Jesuit college in Malta, later at the Collegio Imperial di Palermo. The printer's town Cosmopoli is an imaginary one, see Parenti 'Luoghi di stampa falsi' page 66 and is most propably Palermo as the fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

HANCARVILLE, Pierre-François-Hugues, Baron d' (1719-1805)
Leiden [i.e. Naples]: circa 1771. 2 volumes in one, 8vo (210 x 130mm). 2 engraved titles, 70 engraved plates, good impressions with margins. Contemporary French red morocco gilt, edges gilt, in Derome style. Provenance: Robert Peyrefitte, with his bookplate; purchased from H.D. Lyon, 1994. FIRST EDITION of Hancarville's collection of classical erotica, supposedly taken from actual medallions. Hancarville catalogued Sir William Hamilton's collection of ancient vases in Naples in 1764, from which it is likely he took some inspiration for these images. He went to London in 1777, where he arranged for the second edition of this work with the text also in English. Brunet V:1119; Cohen-de Ricci 476. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

Francois-Marie Arouet Voltaire
London: T. Carnan, 1771. First edition in English of his famous philosophical tale, L'Ingénu, first published in 1767; 12mo, pp. [4], 210; contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, neatly rebacked, black morocco label on spine; two short tears entering the top margin of the title, 1 internal page stained, else generally very good and sound. An edition was published in Philadelphia in 1778. L'Ingénu is a young man born in Canada of French parents, but brought up for twenty years among the Hurons. "He then comes to France, and is recognized as the lost nephew of an old French prior and his sister. .. [L'Ingénu's] simplicity, frankness, and good sense produce some comical situations. .. The story. .. is both a protest against abuses of power. .. and an exposure of some of the absurdities of our conventions" (Ox. Comp. to French Literature). [Attributes: First Edition]

Vergilius Maro, Publius
John Baskerville. Second edition of Baskerville's first ("perhaps finest") book; 4to, pp. [10], 432; contemporary full mottled calf neatly rebacked, preserving the old red morocco label on spine; a bit of spotting to the prelims, but a very good copy nonetheless. This second edition, virtually identical, was (surreptitiously?) printed by Baskerville ca. 1771, which is identified by the positioning of the letter J in Johannis in the imprint. The first edition has the J between the B and the I in Birminghamiae; in the second edition it is to the left of the B. Gaskell 2: "The second edition, unlike the first, is a rare book.".

Miguel de Cervantes
Glasgow: printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1771. 12mo, 4 volumes; 4 engraved plates; contemporary calf; boards and spines worn, labels perished, upper board of volume 1 nearly loose, 1 page chipped, affecting text; good. Gaskell's inferior paper variant without dagger or * signatures. Gaskell notes three plates, in vol. II, p. 238; vol. III, p. 146; and vol. IV, p. 398. Our 4 plates have instructions to be placed on volume I, p. 220; volume II, p. 238; volume III, p. 274; and volume IV, p. 398. Since the page numbers are printed on the plates, there is a good chance that our plate in volume III is not the same as those in Gaskell's. Gaskell 521.
