VEERE - FISHERY].
, . . Cf. Het Utrechts Archief 53 (De Beaufort family archive), item 242 (similar printed ordinance of 1771); NCC & STCN (2 copies of a 1770 ordinance by the Stadholder); for fishing and the fish tade in Veere: Kees Leeman, De geschiedenis van de Veerse visserij 1250-1961, 2nd ed., 1997. Contemporary collection of 4 extremely rare printed ordinances and regulations concerning fishery and the fish trade at Veere, near Middelburg in Zeeland, none recorded in NCC or STCN, plus 7 manuscript extracts from minutes of the meetings of the Veere city council on the same subject. The city had been a leading fish market place since the Middle Ages, held a privilege for the inspection and taxation of fish caught in the region and authorized the auctioneers. To avoid taxes some people transported fish out of the city before it was sold. The first three ordinances attempted to reassert control over the fish trade, though the fact that the authorities found it necessary to issue new ordinances every few years suggests they were not very successful. Each ordinance refers to the previous one, showing that the Council issued none between these three. The fourth printed item gives guild regulations for fishermen using the city harbour, who are required to register their crew members, keep them orderly and make payments to the guild. The manuscript begins on the final integral blank of the 1771 ordinance. From differences in the handwriting it appears that these extracts of minutes were written over the years as the issues came up in the Council. Amusingly, the family name of the printer and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Troisieme edition revue, corrigee et considerablement augmentee par M. Buch'oz. a laquelle on a joint une troisieme parti qui traite des plus belles fleurs. The work was the combination of Merian & Rabel's artwork by Buc'hoz & Desnos into this 1771 printing. The work was published in Paris by Chez L. C. Desnos in 1771.The work is the rarest of Desnos's extraordinary publications. It is an unacknowledged fourth edition of Daniel Rabel's Theatrum Florae. It includes all 69 of the plates that are present in the first three editions. "The plates in Theatrum florae are indeed magnificent. While the images clearly owe much to the earlier florilegia of Vallet and de Bry, certain illustrations stand out due to their exceptional artistic quality and almost scientific realism." ( Oak Spring Flora)Rabel's name was omitted from the work and earlier editions. He only began getting the credit and re-attribution of this work to him in the last 60 years. Blunt considered Rabel to be one of the two greatest French botanical artists of the 17th century, noting that his work, along with that of his successor Nicolas Robert, was 'consummate in its perfection' (The Art of Botanical Illustration p.114). --- The work is in excellent condition overall. Paris, 1771. This exquisite botanical engraving with old hand-coloring is from Daniel Rabel & Maria Sibylla Merian's work entitled Histoire Generale des Insectes de Surinam et de toute l'Europe. There may be a few minor marks or imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Though it lacks such formal and precis treatment of titles and imprints as we are accustomed to today, the 'Bibliotheca botanica' is tremendously impressive in its erudition, its analyses of the contents of important volumes, its biographical notes, its useful though imperfect index, its attractive Zurich typography" (Hunt). - Stellenweise leicht gebräunt bzw. etwas stockfleckig, sonst gut erhalten. - Hunt 622 [Attributes: First Edition]

Samson Occom
New Haven: T. Green, 1771. Age Appropriate. Fairly good. Refer to photos of a few pages which are representative of the condition. It is almost 250 years old. THIS IS A VERY RARE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION. ONE SOLD ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO IN THE RECESSION FOR ABOUT $4,400 AND ANOTHER IS CURRENTLY FOR SALE FROM A DEALER FOR ABOUT $9,200. I am reducing our price to $5590.00. A book publisher wrote to us in 2013 when seeing ours and comparing our complete pamphlet with past auctions, referring to the lack of wrappers " ... it is a scarce and desirable item anyway. I found mixed past auction results for this item, but none so impressive that I am anxious to make a high offer. If the item were priced and offered to me, it would be easy for me to provide a yes or no." Another collector wrote, " Thank you for thinking of us as a home for your Samson Occom sermon pamphlet. We have the best collection in the world of early American imprints published before 1820, so even though we already have this pamphlet in our collection, we are interested in obtaining this as a second copy since the text is complete in yours and not in our copy." We are now ready to offer this scarce and desirable pamphlet. It is an early American treasure. The title page and the first 2 pages are pictured above. It is complete, except for the wrapper. A description of this pamphlet is as follows: "The author of this pamphlet was elder Samson Occom (1723-1792), a leader of the Brothertown (sometimes found as Brotherton) Indians who moved from New York to Wisconsin in the early 19th century. Tasso, Torquato
Parigi: Appresso Agostino Delalain, Pietro Durand, Gio: Claudio Molini, 1771. Illustrated by Gravelot, Hubert-François. First Edition. Hardcover. Item #25082 In two volumes. 331pp; 340pp. Contemporary full mottled calf, sides with triple gilt fillets, ornate gilt spines, gilt inside dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces, titles, dedication, nineteen inserted plates, nine full-page illustrations, head-pieces, tail-pieces, all by Gravelot and engraved by Ponce, Leveau, Le Roy, Rousseau, Henriquez, and others. Rubbing and scuffs to sides and edges, three small old ink stains to bottom edge of volume one, short corner tear to one leaf. Lacks the plate for the eighteenth canto and there are some very minor markings in ink to some of the plates. From what transpires from the two old inscriptions on the front endpapers this set was donated by the Vicar of a church near Brescia to a noted scholar and professor at the University of Brescia. The ink in the markings appears to be the same as the ink in the inscription. Likely the Vicar decided to censor some of the images. A good+ set. Gamba 948. Graesse VII.33. ; Octavo. "He then comes to France, and is recognized as the lost nephew of an old French prior and his sister ... [L'Ingénu's] simplicity, frankness, and good sense produce some comical situations ... The story ... is both a protest against abuses of power ... and an exposure of some of the absurdities of our conventions" (Ox. Comp. to French Literature). [Attributes: First Edition]
