Andreas Gottlieb Masch (1724-1807, Text) & Daniel Woge (1717-1797, Illustrationen).
Berlin, Carl Friedrich Rellstab, (1771).. Quart. Zeitgenössischer marmorierter Pappband (etwas lichtrandig, Kapitale berieben). 20 Bll., 151 (+1) S., mit 1 gestochenen Karte und 52 teils ausfaltbaren Kupfertafeln. Sehr gutes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

Piccole manc. The book describes the geography, biology and anthropology of Argentina (then a Spanish colony), Patagonia, Tahiti and Indonesia (then a Dutch colony). The book was a sensation, especially the description of Tahitian society. Bougainville described it as an earthly paradise where men and women lived in blissful innocence, far from the corruption of civilisation.Bougainville's descriptions powerfully expressed the concept of the noble savage, influencing the utopian thoughts of philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau before the advent of the French Revolution. Denis Diderot's book Supplément au voyage de Bougainville retells the story of Bougainville's landing on Tahiti, narrated by an anonymous reader to one of his friends. Diderot used his fictional approach, including a description of the Tahitians as noble savages, to criticise Western ways … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILKES, John
London, printed by T. Sherlock, for J. Williams. 1771. 8vo., (2) + 320pp., wanting the errata leaf, with two early engraved portraits added and bound in (of Wilkes and Horne Tooke),> title-page lightly soiled, ink library shelf number on blank verso of title and foot of spine, old Norwich library inkstamp in two blank margins and its bookplate on front pastedown, bound in late 19th century maroon half morocco, spine gilt with raised bands. A good, crisp, copy. First edition. A contemporary anthology of the Horne/Wilkes correspondence, sometimes vitriolic, largely from the two or three year period following the 1768 and 1769 Middlesex elections. 'In 1769 Horne was elected burgess of Brentford and on 20 February of that year, under Horne's auspices, the Society of Gentleman Supporters of the Bill of Rights> was formed at the London tavern. An advertisement for the society drawn up by Horne states that ‘their sole aim is to maintain and defend the legal, constitutional libertyÂ’ of the people (Wilkes, Controversial Letters,> 150–51), but its primary objective was to assist a financially crippled Wilkes through subscriptions. Supported by some of London's wealthiest and most prominent agitators, the society managed to raise considerable amounts towards retrieving Wilkes's finances. Horne was at this time occupied with an exhausting interest in political contests, such that one critic later commented that he was acting ‘as a kind of travelling counsel to every man who thought himself capable of being made an object of public commiserationÂ’. Horne, however, had a genuine inte … [Click Below for Full Description]
