Randolph, Thomas, Attributed
1771. Adherence to the Creed of the Church of England [Randolph, Thomas (1701-1783), Attributed]. A Summary View of the Laws Relating to Subscriptions, &c. With Remarks, Humbly Offered to the Consideration of the British Parliament. London: [S.n.], Printed in the Year 1771. 36 pp. Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent period-style three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to spine ends and corners, light toning to text. * First edition, one of two issues from 1771 (the other an 8 pp. quarto). Subscription refers to one's adherence to the 39 Articles of Religion, the statement of the doctrines and practices of the Church of England that are part of the Book of Common Prayer. Degree candidates at Cambridge and Oxford were required to submit to a formal declaration of subscription. Using a legal argument, a Summary View opposes a recent movement to abolish this requirement. (Proponents of abolition, basing their case on William and Mary's 1701 Act of Toleration, presented a petition to Parliament in 1772 that was defeated.) Randolph, the presumed author, was a theologian and the president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. A second edition of this pamphlet was published in 1772. English Short-Title Catalogue T57412. Baumgarten, Siegmund Jakob & Semler, Johann Salomo.
Halle. J. J. Gebauer.1744-1771. Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten (* 14. März 1706 in Wolmirstedt; † 4. [Click Below for Full Description]

TERENCE (TERENTIUS AFER, Publius).
Dibdin, II, p. 475; for the binding tools: Spoelder, Prijsboeken, p. 725; J. Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch decorated bookbinding in the eighteenth century, vol. IIB, pp. 1018-1027. Celebrated edition, the first to be edited by Arnoldus Henricus Westerhovius, of all six comedies by Terence, his only known work, still regarded as highlights of classical literature and the earliest well-known works by an African-born author, with extensive commentaries and indexes. Dibdin described it as "a sumptuous and valuable edition", which "will be found to contain the learned observations of Lindenbrogius, of Calphurnius upon the 'Heautontomorumenos', of Eugraphius, enlarged from two Leiden MSS. and the commentaries of Donatus. The index is copious". With a manuscript inscription in Latin, dated summer 1771, by Friedrich Ludwig Abresch, rector of the Gymnasium in Zwolle, presenting the book as a prize to Wilt Gerrit Jan van Rhemenshuizen (1757-1827), when he advanced from the second to last to the final class. From 1781 on he was member of the "Ridderschap" of Overijssel, and in 1814 he was appointed member of the Provincial States of Gelderland (NNBW IX, cols. 860-861). The binding (12 cm thick!) was made by what Storm van Leeuwen calls the First Zwolle Prize Bindery (active 1766-1789), and he suggests it was operated by Simon Clement (ca. 1725?-1795).

This important text, also known as the Nakaz, or Instruction, is a statement of legal principles written by Catherine II from 1764 and 1766. Permeated with the ideas of the French Enlightenment, and copied mostly from the work of Voltaire, Montesquieu and Beccaria, it was compiled as a guide for the All-Russia Legislative Commission convened by the Empress in 1767 to create a new code to replace the 1649 Muscovite Code. Revised in consultation with Beccaria, Frederick the Great and Voltaire, the Instruction proclaimed the equality of all men before the law and disapproved of death penalty and torture. Unfortunately, her proposed code was never completed. Catherine's manuscript was written in French, and she later produced a Russian translation. Editions in German and Russian were published in Moscow in 1767. Several editions followed in nations ranging from Italy to Latvia. The first Dutch edition, in D … [Click Below for Full Description]

Osbeck, Peter (Pehr) [Translated by John Reinhold Forster]
Horace's Head, Fleet Street, London: Benjamin White, 1771. First English edition. Two volumes, 13 engraved plates (of which 11 are of plants), pp xx, 396; 367, (35), lacking the half-titles, a general age-toning throughout, a few very minor marginal tears, there is some marginal staining in the second volume which I would not call offensive, otherwise this is a very good wide-margined copy, uncut and unpressed; bound in a recent full panelled calf, blind-stamped, raised bands on the spines with a red labels, very good. [Osbeck (1723 - 1805) was a Swedish explorer, naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. In 1750 - 1752 he travelled as chaplain on the ship Prins Carl to Asia where he spent four months studying the flora, fauna, and people of the Canton region of China. He returned home just in time to contribute more than 600 species of plant to Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, published in 1753. Ekeberg (1716 - 1784) was a Swedish physician, chemist and explorer. He made several voyages to the East Indies and China as a sea captain. He brought back reports of the tea tree and wrote a number of books. Trained as a pharmacist and chemist, Ekeberg started his career as a ship's doctor, and became an expert navigator. Between 1742 and 1778 he made ten trips to India and China, becoming a captain in 1750 for the Swedish East India Company. He brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Carl Linnaeus, with whom he had a close friendship, and was honoured b … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[VEERE - FISHERY].
Cf. Het Utrechts Archief 53 (De Beaufort family archive), item 242 (similar printed ordinance of 1771); NCC & STCN (2 copies of a 1770 ordinance by the Stadholder); for fishing and the fish tade in Veere: Kees Leeman, De geschiedenis van de Veerse visserij 1250-1961, 2nd ed., 1997. Contemporary collection of 4 extremely rare printed ordinances and regulations concerning fishery and the fish trade at Veere, near Middelburg in Zeeland, none recorded in NCC or STCN, plus 7 manuscript extracts from minutes of the meetings of the Veere city council on the same subject. The city had been a leading fish market place since the Middle Ages, held a privilege for the inspection and taxation of fish caught in the region and authorized the auctioneers. To avoid taxes some people transported fish out of the city before it was sold. The first three ordinances attempted to reassert control over the fish trade, though the fact that the authorities found it necessary to issue new ordinances every few years suggests they were not very successful. Each ordinance refers to the previous one, showing that the Council issued none between these three. The fourth printed item gives guild regulations for fishermen using the city harbour, who are required to register their crew members, keep them orderly and make payments to the guild. The manuscript begins on the final integral blank of the 1771 ordinance. From differences in the handwriting it appears that these extracts of minutes were written over the years as the issues came up in the Council. Amusingly, the family name of the printer and publish … [Click Below for Full Description]

Holbach, Systeme de la Nature, 1771, PMM, Mirabaud Rare edition, released the year after the first. This famous work, one of the most radical Enlightenment philosophy, was called "the bible of materialism". Published in Holland under a false name, it caused a great scandal and was immediately banned and put to the stake in August 1770. Resolutely atheist and hostile even to deism, the baron of Holbach, who had drawn to support his thesis to Hobbes, Locke and La Mettrie, managed to offend almost everyone, including Voltaire and Federico II. The book, however, was a huge success and in a short time ten editions were made. For the 1770 edition see PMM 215, Tchemerzine 6/243 London, s.n., 1771., Edition printed one year after the original of this work published under the name of Mirabeau. A true manifesto of atheism and materialism, he made a considerable noise when he left. His publication drew to his author the wrath of the Index but also of Voltaire who denigrated (especially from the stylistic point of view). Grimm, on the other hand, praised it and attributed some passages to Diderot. The Nature System quickly became one of the emblematic texts of free thought in the Age of Enlightenment. Holbach contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague, Denis Diderot. Diderot, d Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussion at the Baron s house, which became known as "the café of Europe" (among whose foreign visitors were Wilkes, Hume and Sterne). In the Systême Holba … [Click Below for Full Description]

Van Aken, Cat. Ned. Toneel II, p. 351 (mentioning only a title-vignette); Moderne Encyclopedie van de Wereldliteratuur, vol. 7, p. 239; STCN (8 copies, only 3 with engr. title). Splendid copy, luxuriously extra-illustrated 5 years after the original publication, of the first edition of Pijpers's Dutch adaptation of Marmontel's 1771 Zémire et Azor, a version of the fairytale, Beauty and the beast. It is signed in brown ink by the author, and on the last page by G. de Visscher as a warrant of authenticity.STCN notes that some copies, like ours, have 2 additional folia: an illustrated typographical title-page (with Pijpers's roundel portrait on a monument) and a poem by Pieter Pijpers, entitled "Op Myne afbeelding", dated 1789. Apart from these extra leaves, our copy is embellished with 6 plates with scenes of the play from the original French edition of Marmontel's play, published in Paris, 1771, here all beautifully coloured, and with 3 extra plates by Dutch artists, probably made to illustrate a third edition; a second edition appeared in 1786.Zémire and Azor was a comical opera in 4 acts composed by the Belgian composer André Grétry, with a French text by Jean François Marmontel (1723-1799), based on Jean Marie Prince de Beaumont's 1756 La belle et la bête and P.C. The opera was first performed on 9 November 1771, stayed in the French repertory until at least 1821 and enjoyed worldwide success. Franz I. (1768-1835) erster Kaiser von Österreich. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Plate 6 in Volume 1 is bound opposite page 40, Plate 4 is bound opposite page 45, and the rest of the plates follow in correct order. The offsetting of Plate 6 on page 40 seems to show that this is the original placement of that Plate. The leather bindings are worn and chipped along the edges. See the photos. Cook, James
London: T. Beckett and P.A de Hondt, 1771. A JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, IN HIS MAJESTY'S SHIP ENDEAVOUR, IN THE YEARS 1768, 1769, 1770 AND 1771. (Cook, James) [Magra, James] London: T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt, 1771. 1st edition first printing, 4to, pp. [leaf - title] [leaf dedication with note at bottom Place this next the Title] 130 [2 leaves]. Period half diced Russia and marbled boards, some minor browning in margins or traces of handling on a few text pages, else a large and very attractive copy. The earliest of the series of so-called 'surreptitious' accounts of Cook's voyages, this published anonymously less than three months after the Endeavour returned and two years before Hawkesworth's official account of the voyage. The dedication leaf printed separately from the rest of the text, to the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Daniel Solander, implied their approval and gave this work the appearance of authority. However, the Admiralty, Banks and Solander immediately published an advertisement denying all knowledge of this work and the dedication was quickly removed; the result being that very few copies exist with this suppressed added leaf. The authorship has not been conclusively proved, but James Magra is the most likely candidate. He was an American-born midshipman on the Endeavour, whose important proposals twelve years later for the establishment of a colony in New South Wales were supported by Sir Joseph Banks. Magra's authorship was first suggested by Beaglehole and recent scholarship by Alan Frost has given additional weight to this attribution. [ … [Click Below for Full Description]
