Moliere
Berwick: R. Taylor, 1771. Condition: Very Good. Duodecimo size, 1773 pp. Jean-Baptist Poquelin (1622-1673), known by his stage name of Moliere, was a playwright and actor who is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Thirteen years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing, combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Though conventional thinkers, religious leaders, and medical professionals in Moliere's time criticized his work, their ideas did not really impact his widespread success with the public (N.B. - above information from Wikipedia). DESCRIPTION: All six volumes, VG overall. Full tan leather, gilt ruling to both boards, five raised bands on spine, title in gilt in second compartment, volume number in gilt in third compartment, gilt pattern in other compartments, plain white endpapers. Contents: Vol. I (270 pp.), An Account of the Author, The Blunderer or the Counter-plots, The Amorous Quarrel, The Miser. London: Thomas Hodgson, 1771. see item description for condition details please. Here is another One of a kind showcase that I'm offering for sale. If you missed purchasing one of the other display cases that I listed, here's your chance for another. This one showcases a 1784,London printed "Children's Curious Hieroglyphick Bible" in the upper portion of the case. (it does not have the general title, but is otherwise complete) (the first edition was printed in London in 1783) I needed to edit this portion of the description because I originally thought this book to be a 1792 printing. Looking again at the free end papers, there is a note that identifies this printing as a 1784...the apparent identifiers of that date are found on page 107 of this book...this is noted on the free end paper in pencil. I do now recall about eight years ago being able to confirm that note as factual, but I can't remember how exactly I was able to research that and confirm it...but I do remember that I was able to. ............................................................................................................................................................... I have included a link now to show that the copy I have in this case is in fact one of the earliest copies of this book (very rare indeed)....indicating that the writing on the free end paper is correct.....please look at the following link and closely compare the woodcuts with the one I have in my photo (the second to last photo).... I received an eBay notice about the link I had....I will try to make it possible to do the comp … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAUDEAU, Nicolas] ; LIEBAUD
Rare. Bon

VIAUD, Pierre.
Amsterdam, Petrus Conradi, 1771.20th century cloth. Woodcut vignette on titel-page. Bordeaux 1768. - This book tells the extraordinary story of a French seaman who sailed from Bordeaux in February 1765 as mate in the Aimable Suzette, Captain St. Crie, bound for the West Indies. Forced by illness to remain on the small island of St. Louis, off the coast of Saint-Domingue (Haiti), Viaud enters into a partnership with a Haitian resident, monsieur Desclau, to trade goods to Louisiana. They hire a vessel, the Tigre, Captain La Couture, and sail with sixteen passengers and crew on 2 January 1766. During the voyage the ship springs a leak, and on 16 February 1766 runs aground and breaks up on an island off the coast of Florida. Viaud's account of his adventures somehow fell into the hands of the French scholar Jean Gaspard Dubois-Fontanelle who published it at Bordeaux in 1768. Exacly how much is the work of Fontanelle himself is uncertain, but it was an instant bestseller and became one of the most reprinted and translated works of the 18th century. After many years of debate and indecision, the basic framework (at least) of Viaud's account is now regarded as truthful (Howgego V, p.474-474). 'Probably the story of cannibalism accounted for the popularity of this narrative' (Huntress 80C).Not in Tiele or Cat. NHSM; Sabin 99414; Polak 9438.

Wheelock, Eleazar D.D.
Printed [by Ebenezer Watson] in the year, [Hartford], 1771. 61, [3 blanks] pp, with the errata list at the bottom of page 61. Stitched, untrimmed, uncut. Unsophisticated, some spotting to title leaf. Very Good. "Wheelock, a graduate from Yale in 1733, was pastor of the Second (North) Society in Lebanon, and a popular preacher during the Great Awakening. He began the Charity School (first called More's Charity School, after Col. Joshua More, who contributed a house and school-house) in 1754, and by 1765 had some forty-six pupils, all supported by charity. In 1769 Wheelock was given a charter to establish Dartmouth College, which he did in 1770, and became its first president" [Streeter Sale]. Wheelock's plan for the School, formed to instruct Indians and train them "as missionaries and teachers to their respective tribes" [DAB], evidently was inspired by his having taught Samson Occom in the 1740's. This is the second issue of the first edition, with the errata at the base of page 61. It is the sixth of Wheelock's series of Reports on the Indian Charity School. Pages 54-61 print 'A poem on the rise and progress of Moor's Indian charity-school, (now incorporated with Dartmouth College) its removal and settlement in Hanover, and the founding a church in the same," by Frisbie. Evans 12284. Streeter Sale 4062 [this issue]. Trumbull 1625. Field 1642. Sabin 103208. 6 Rosenbach 390. ESTC W27339. [Attributes: First Edition]

Cook, James) [Magra, James]
T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt (London), 1771. A JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, IN HIS MAJESTY'S SHIP ENDEAVOUR, IN THE YEARS 1768, 1769, 1770 AND 1771. (Cook, James) [Magra, James] London: T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt, 1771. 1st edition first printing, 4to, pp. [leaf - title] [leaf dedication with note at bottom Place this next the Title] 130 [2 leaves]. Period half diced Russia and marbled boards, some minor browning in margins or traces of handling on a few text pages, else a large and very attractive copy. The earliest of the series of so-called 'surreptitious' accounts of Cook's voyages, this published anonymously less than three months after the Endeavour returned and two years before Hawkesworth's official account of the voyage. The dedication leaf printed separately from the rest of the text, to the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Daniel Solander, implied their approval and gave this work the appearance of authority. However, the Admiralty, Banks and Solander immediately published an advertisement denying all knowledge of this work and the dedication was quickly removed; the result being that very few copies exist with this suppressed added leaf. The authorship has not been conclusively proved, but James Magra is the most likely candidate. He was an American-born midshipman on the Endeavour, whose important proposals twelve years later for the establishment of a colony in New South Wales were supported by Sir Joseph Banks. Magra's authorship was first suggested by Beaglehole and recent scholarship by Alan Frost has given additional weight to this attribution. … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Chez la veuve Duchesne, A Paris 1771, In-12 (10x17cm), xvj (4) 480pp. et (4) iij (1) 431pp. et (4) ij (2) 432pp. et (4) iv, 460pp., 4 volumes reliés. - Edition originale, rare, parue anonymement. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition, rare, published anonymously. Warnery, [Charles-Emmanuel] de.
1771. 8vo. 264 pp. With 3 folding engr. plates. Contemp. calf with giltstamped red label to gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Second, enlarged edition, published a year after the first and now including "diverses observations sur les grandes actions qui se sont passées dans la dernière guerre d'Hongrie, et dans la présente en Moldavie". This is the first work of the Swiss-born De Warnery (1720-86), published in a German translation as early as 1766 (purportedly against his own wishes): according to the author, never one to eschew self-aggrandizement, he was the first to "unmask the Turks" and show that they did not warrant the fear with which they were usually viewed (cf. ADB XLI, 176). The plates show suggestions for battle arrays. - Unobtrusive repairs to lower cover of the appealing binding. Variously browned and brownstained due to paper. Rare. Formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Barbier IV, 257. Cf. Atabey 1321 (first ed. 1770). Not in Blackmer.

A pupil of Pierre Fauchard, Bourdet was one of the most renowned dentist of his time. He soon entered in the service of Louis XV as personal dental surgeon. The king later elevated him to noble ranks for his professional merit. The author discusses the importance of the teeth both as embellishments to physical appearance and as cutting tools essential to life. He also stresses the need for oral hygiene in order to prevent infection of the bloodstream by the swallowing of impure saliva. The work is divided into sections on keeping the mouth healthy, on preventing damage to the teeth, and on repairing damage caused by neglect or accident. For toothache Bourdet prescribes luxation, through which the dental nerve was disrupted at the root. There are also observations on false teeth, and advice to parents and to others bringing up children. Part of the material is drawn from Bourdet's "Recherches sur toutes les parties de l'Art du Dentiste" published in Paris in 1757. "A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Manuscript.
1771. 12mo. Unpaginated. 9 pp. manuscript entries. This little book documents articles sold from ship's stores, as well as loans and payments made, in the course of a voyage of the ship "Royal Charlotte" from Suriname to Newport, RI, with a stop at St. Eustatius. "The Royal Charlotte" was a known slave ship, and William Vernon, mentioned several times in these entries, was prominent in the American slave trade. It is likely that this voyage of December 1771 - January 1772, was the third leg of a triangle trade voyage - carrying sugar from Suriname to Newport in exchange for slaves imported from West Africa. Named sailors are (?) Munro, Humph. Cochran, John Scott, John Turner, Lemuel Parmer, Aldrich Wiley, and John Foot. "Cory" is named several times as captain. Transactions include payments for rum, clothing, and "hospital money" subtracted from payment due to each sailor. Stab sewn. In plain paper wrappers on which is written "Brgt Charlotte Cory 1771 to Surranmae."
