Chronicon de Gestis Principum Vicecomitum ab anno MDDL usque ad Annum MCCCLXX. Accedit Opusculum ejusdem Authoris De Bello Canepiciano. Quae omnia ex Manuscripto Codice Bibliothecae Ambrosianae ediderat Ludovicus Antonius Muratorius.

Mediolani, apud Federicum Agnellum, 1771. 1771 In-4° (235x185mm), pp. (2), LX, 393, (1) di errata, legatura coeva m. pelle con filetti in oro e titolo in oro su tassello verde. 2 testatine, 2 capilettera e 3 finaletti. Manno, IV, 14714. Cat. Hoepli, 497. Predari, 119. Cocconato, Piemontesi illustri, IV, 223. Brunet, Table, 25377.

The Vicar of Bray : A Tale.

London, printed for R. Baldwin 1771.. First Edition, 2 Vols, tall 12mo [binding c.17.5 x 11 cms], very smartly and handsomely bound in modern period-style polished tan calf, the spines ruled and numbered in gilt, and with red morocco labels. First and last leaf in both vols a little browned around the margin from contact with the turn-ins of the original binding, Vol 1 with tiny piece nipped from top corner of first two leaves, occasional light spotting of text. Overall an exceptional copy, very bright and attractive. <> Extremely rare 18th century Libertine novel based on the life and times of the legendary Vicar of Bray, who supposedly contorted his religious affiliations to suit the changing times - from a supporter of Divine Right under Charles II, a papist under James II, moderate under William, tory under Anne, whig under George and lusty protestant under succeeding Hanovers. The final leaf of Vol 2 prints the text of the famous satirical Ballad of the Vicar of Bray<> The novel presents the Vicar as an anti-hero, ultimately disgraced, who, together with his aristocratic friends and patrons, not only tacks and gybes to the political weather, but also cuts a despicable swathe through the innocent women of town and country. The Vicar, who had 'an unconquerable aversion to the clerical character', is 'deep read in the mystery of politics' and 'does not scruple to become all things to all men'. Worse, he 'never saw a woman without forming designs upon her, nor never succeeded in his attempts without abandoning her to the complicated miseries of distress, poverty, guilt and disgrace'. <> Top corner of both title-pages neatly signed Horace O. Bayfield, LRCPE, Surgeon. Bayfield 1843 - 1917 was a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. He was born in Charlotte, Canada, the son of the distinguished British surveyor of the Canadian coast Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield. <> This novel is very rare : only two copies of this two-volume First Edition are held in British Libraries : and only three copies of the one-volume Irish Edition of 1771. A one-volume New Edition was issued in 1779, of which only one copy is held. <> The legendary story of The Vicar of Bray was the basis for an 1882 comic opera, and for a 1937 film starring Stanley Holloway.

London, for J.Cooke [1771].. frontispiece (offset on to title), [2], iv, vi, 7-160 p., 12-page catalogue, very good copy, old calf-backed boards, neat repairs. First edition, rare. From ESTC and OCLC we can locate 3 library copies in UK (all in London) and 3 in USA, but not all are complete. The book was reprinted the next year so carelessly that the page-numbers in the Contents are those required for the first edition, all astray for the second. The book is a pretty comprehensive account of high and especially low life in London: "bloods, bucks, choice spirits, and fellows of high fun; motherly matrons, and their obliging daughters; jilts, mock milliners, pimps, panders, jugglers, parasites, mock patriots; shallow politicians, ministerial understrappers; French hair-dressers, parish beadles, reforming constables, decrepit watchmen, &c. &c. &c."

Frankfurt and Leipzig: J. G. Fleischers Buchhandlung, 1771. 8vo. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches). 157pp. Uncut. Contemporary paper boards, early paper label on spine titled in manuscript. Rare edition of Beatty's journal of his travels among the Delaware Indians: "the first account of Indian towns in southeast Ohio" (Howes). The author was an Irish-born Presbyterian missionary who preached widely in both America and Europe. Beatty was sent to the American frontier in 1766 to report on the condition of the Indian tribes. "The tour of this zealous and intelligent observer to the Indian towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio, lying far beyond the frontiers, was made at a period of great interest in their history. The warriors of the Delaware and Shawnese had ravaged them with the tomahawk and firebrand for twenty years, and the Journal of the missionary is filled with notes of their awful massacres. It is very full and minute in its details of interviews with Indian chiefs, and the various phases of aboriginal life which attracted his attention" (Field). This German edition, i.e. the second edition overall following the 1768 first edition published in London, was unknown to Thomson or Field. We find no record of this edition appearing at auction in the last quarter century. Howes B28; Vail 608; Sabin 4150; Field 102 (London edition); Pilling, Proof Sheets 324 (London edition).

The History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth, Emperor of Germany, and all the Kingdoms and States in Europe, during his Age

Printed for the Subscribers Robert Bell America (Philadelphia): Printed for the Subscribers (Robert Bell), 1770; i.e., 1770-1771. First American edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Yes. First edition printed in America. Three volumes. 8vo. viii,(ii),360;(xvi),374;(xlii),351,(lvii)pp., but with several errors in pagination as noted by Evans. Contemporary full sheep; spines with simple gilt rules and volume number sin gilt; red leather lettering labels, gilt. A few notes by a former owner, including the beginning of his name on the title page of Volume 2 (Isaac Lew...) possibly a relative of Nathaniel Lewis and Mordecai Lewis who are listed on the List of Subscribers. This publication marks the substantial beginning of the introduction of European literature into America. Bell has published with it an address upon international copyright, the first on the subject. The long list of subscribers is a veritable who's who of early American history: John Adams, Jacob Giles, John Hancock (2 sets), Cecil Rodney, and so on: ''whose names posterity may respect because by these seasonable encouragements this American edition hath been accomplished at a price so moderate that the man of the woods as well as the man of the court may now solace himself with substantial delight." A two volume set was also printed that year. Evans, 11837; Sabin, 72003. Bell also brought out an edition of Blackstone in 1771. An exceedingly rare book.; if the list of subscribers is a guide, only a few hundred sets were issued. The owner's name was clipped in binding, and so will likely remain just out of reach.

The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands: Containing the Figures of Birds, Beasts, Fishes, Serpents, Insects, and Plants; Particularly, those not hitherto Described

London: Benjamin White, 1771. 2 volumes. Folio (22 3/8 x 15 2/8 inches). Text in English and French. Folding engraved map with original hand-colour. 220 hand-coloured engraved plates after Catesby. Modern red calf; modern red cloth cases. Third edition. In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Catesby was enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, and he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. Catesby initially encountered some difficulty in interesting sponsors in his monumental Natural History. Determined nonetheless to persevere in his project, and also wishing to maintain control over the translation of his drawings into print, the artist learned to engrave copper plates and set out to complete the Natural History himself. He produced all but two of the plates, and painted the impressions himself to further insure their fidelity to his models. The result was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Despite Catesby's initial difficulties in finding subscribers, his striking finished product received widespread acclaim. Cromwell Mortimer, Secretary of the Royal Society, declared the publication to be "the most magnificent work I know since the Art of printing has been discovered." Catesby's charming, distinctive style sets his work apart from all artists who later followed his example. The overt simplicity of his compositions is deceiving; the artist arranged each of his images with great care, often combining seemingly incongruous elements to create the most artful scene possible. A sense of Catesby's enthusiasm for his subjects is palpable in his engravings. Very few artists were so personally involved in the completion of a published work, and Catesby's images convey what the artist must have experienced in America: the colors and varieties of the exotic species of birds, fish, animals, insects and plants of the New World. Widely considered the great achievement of 18th-century art and science, Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands has lost none of its power to delight in the 250 years since its publication. This remarkable study of American plants and animals is a monument to Catesby's intelligence, scientific devotion and love of nature. The Natural History has provided an important model for ornithologists and scientists, including John James Audubon, who followed in Catesby's footsteps a century later..

Paris: Chez L.C. Desnos, 1771. 1 volume ('...Tome Premier, Des Plantes de Surinam'), folio. (19 9/16 x 13 inches). Engraved hand-coloured additional allegorical title dated 1768, 72 hand-coloured engraved plates [1 folding] by J. Mulder, P. Sluyter and A. Stopendaal, all after Merian, each with the French names of the plants depicted added to image area. Bound to style in 18th-century diced russia gilt, covers with triple fillet border with floral spray cornerpiece, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools. A fine hand-coloured copy of the complete series of 'Surinam' plates by Merian : beautiful images of the plants and insects of Surinam, and one of the most famous natural history works of the 18th century. Merian was the daughter of the well-known Swiss engraver/publisher Matthaeus Merian. Her mother was Dutch, and after Matthaeus' early death she married the flower painter Jacob Marrell. Tradition has it that it was one of his pupils, Johann Graff of Nuremberg, who first taught Maria to paint, and certainly they later married. Two of Maria's primary interests were botany and entomology and the present work reflected that interest. The impetus to produce the present plates came when, having left Graff, she was shown a collection of tropical insects from Surinam. This inspired her, and, together with her daughter Dorothea, she embarked on a remarkably enterprising journey. They arrived in South America in late summer 1699 and stayed until June 1701 studying and recording the plants and insects. The results of their labours being the magnificent Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, with 60 plates, was published in 1705. Later editions, including the present issue (...Tome Premier. Des Plantes de Surinam), were extended to include an additional 12 plates by Maria's eldest daughter Johanna. Peter Dance writes of the work, that it was 'easily the most magnificent work on insects so far produced... [combining] science and art in equal proportions... Her portrayals of living insects and other animals were imbued with a charm, a minuteness of observation and artistic sensibility that had not previously been seen in a natural history book' (The Art of Natural History [1978)). The printing plates for the present work were apparently bought by Desnos at the auction in Paris of the collection of 'Un Curieux de Paris.' This is possibly a reference to a member of the Huquier family. 'Huquier fils' of Paris published a reissue of the plates of the Metamorphosis... (without text) in about 1745 under the title Recueil de plantes des Indes (Hunt 524). The history of the plates between 1730 and 1745 is not known with any certainty, but Desnos notes that the previous owner of the plates had secured them in Amsterdam many years earlier. cf. Blunt (1994) pp.142-145; cf. Dunthorne 205; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.119; cf. Hunt 467 and 524; cf. Nissen BBI 1341.

The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands containing the figures of birds, beasts, fishes, serpents, insects and plants; particularly those not hitherto described, or incorrectly figured by former authors, with their descriptions in English and French ... By the late Mark Catesby ... Revised by Mr. Edwards ...

London: printed for Benjamin White, 1771 [plates on wove paper watermarked 1815-1816]. 2 volumes, folio. (20 3/4 x 14 1/4 inches). Titles and text in English and French. 220 hand-coloured engraved plates by or after Catesby, 3 plates (61, 80 and 96, volume 2) by Georg Dionysius Ehret, 1 double-page hand-coloured engraved map of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. Expertly bound to style in half diced russia over contemporary marbled paper covered boards, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, tooled in gilt on either side of each band, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, red speckled edges. "Catesby's Natural History is the most famous colour- plate book of American plant and animal life ... a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). A lovely and vastly important work by the founder of American ornithology, this book embodies the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. This is undoubtedly the most significant work of American natural history before Audubon. This copy a fine example of a later issue of the third edition. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his Natural History; he travelled extensively in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy. The end result is encyclopaedic: Catesby provides information not only on the botany and ornithology of the area, but also on its history, climate, geology and anthropology. Catesby writes in the preface of his method of working: "As I was not bred a Painter, I hope some faults in Perspective, and other niceties, may be more readily excused: for I humbly conceive that Plants, and other Things done in a Flat, if an exact manner, may serve the Purpose of Natural History, better in some Measure, than in a mere bold and Painter-like Way. In designing the Plants, I always did them while fresh and just gathered: and the Animals, particularly the Birds, I painted while alive (except a very few) and gave them their Gestures peculiar to every kind of Birds, and where it could be admitted, I have adapted the Birds to those Plants on which they fed, or have any relation to. Fish, which do not retain their colours when out of their Element, I painted at different times, having a succession of them procured while the former lost their colours ... Reptiles will live for many months ... so that I had no difficulty in painting them while living" (Vol.I, p.vi). First issued in parts between 1730 and 1747, this 1771 third edition appeared in at least two issues. The first was produced in 1771, and was printed throughout on laid paper. The present copy is a later issue, with the text still on laid paper, but the plates on Whatman wove paper. This wove paper was ideal for the printing of engraved plates as the smooth surface takes an impression much more correctly than the earlier laid paper, where the chain lines produce slight corrugations in the paper surface. Copies vary in the quality of colouring; in the present copy the colouring is superb.

Arbetet utkom första gången i bokform 1764.

        NEW GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL GRAMMAR:

1771. Very Good. SALMON, Thomas A NEW GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL GRAMMAR: Wherein the geographical part is truly modern; and the present state of the several kingdoms of the world is so interspersed, as to render the study of geography both entertaining and instructive... Illustrated with a new set of maps of the countries described. The Fourteenth Edition, with very large additions and improvements, brought down to the present times. Edinburgh: Willison and Darling..., 1771. Twenty-four plates, including twenty-two fold-out maps, as called for, and a frontispiece portrait of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Octavo: xii,[2],7-603,[13] pp. In a much worn and heavily scuffed contemporary leather binding with 1/2" loss at crown, a short tear at heel, one joint starting, and a skinned patch on the lower board. Near contemporary ink ownerships on back of frontispiece. The text leaves and maps are age-toned with some intermittent light to moderate foxing. Most maps are crisply folded and have sharp edges. The notable exception is the map of the world which has some loss along one fold (a rectangular patch in the Pacific Ocean), a horizontal tear at the top edge (without loss but the piece is heavily creased), and it is starting at folds. Nonetheless, despite the wear noted above, it is a very good and complete copy of this popular eighteenth-century work which is seldom found intact.
