A Brief Enquiry into the State after Death, as Touching the Certainty thereof; and Whether we shall Exist in a Material or Immaterial Substance; and whether The Scripture Doctrine of a future State Be supportable by the Light of Reason

Manchester: Printed for the Author 1771 - FIRST EDITION, engraved portrait frontispiece (giving the author’s name, which is not on the title-page), a bit browned and soiled in places, some messy pen trials, a couple of paper repairs, price erased from title-page, pp. xi, [12-] 31, 8vo, late nineteenth century half brown calf, ex-Wigan Public Library with their blind stamp on first and last leaf, signature of John [ ] Kettel on title and of George Kellet on recto of frontispiece, sound. This curious tract is ‘written up’ on the Chetham’s Library website, from which we quote: ‘Sylvanus Hibbert’s snappily titled A Brief Inquiry into the State after Death [&c] is a pamphlet that deserves to be better known for three reasons. Firstly, it advocates cremation some years before this became popular . Secondly, the pamphlet is quite rare. In a note in the Library’s copy of this book, James Crossley, Honorary Librarian of Chetham's and President of the Chetham Society, claimed that this was "perhaps the scarcest of Manchester tracts, certainly one of the most curious. Dr. Hibbert-Ware, Sylvanus’s nephew, cashed in and destroyed every copy he could find" . Lastly, the book has an engraved frontispiece of the author, which shows that either he didn’t care about his physical appearance or that he was simply having a laugh . if anyone knows of a less flattering caricature of a Manchester man then please let us know.’ And see The Life and Correspondence of Samuel Hibbert Wake, Chapter II. (ESTC T53007; 6 copies in the UK, including Chetham’s, Yale only in the USA)

A Treatise on Marriage. Being serious thoughts on The original Design of that sacred Institution, and the absolute Importance of its Solemnization between real Christians, for promoting mutual Happiness. To which are added Scriptures on the Education of Children; containing Instructive Rules, deduced from Scripture and Experience, calculated to form their tender Minds, and train them up in the Paths of Duty

London: Printed by M. Lewis, and Sold by J. Buckland; J. Gureny; and G. Keith..., 1771. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo, 155 x 92 mms., pp. xii, 134, with divisional title after page 66 of the Treatise for the Strictures on the Education of Children, and a half-title with "Baptist Library/ Stokes Croft/ Bristol" in a contemporary hand on the top margin, 20th century half calf, marbled boards, spine blocked in gilt, and the book plate of John Lawson on the front paste-down end-paper; front joint slightly rubbed and slight crack at top, but a very good copy. In the preface, Giles discloses that the work began life as a treatise on the education of children, which he "transmitted it by parts, through the channel of a valuable periodical publication." He was then entreated by friends to write a tract on marriage, and the present book ensued. There are no revolutionary surprises in the description of the marriage bond. The married woman is to stand in the same relation her husband as he is to God; her duty is to obey and serve him. "This subjection is not a slavish one; but as the body and members of it are to be governed, guided and directed by its head, to what is for their good and benefit; so the obedient wife will reverence her husband in all things...." Giles does not seem to have been married, nor have had children. Eene waare geschiedenis. Door hem zelven beschreeven. Gesterkt met een certificaat van dan heer Sevettenham, commandant van het Engelsch fort St. Marc des Apalaches.

      - Amsterdam, Petrus Conradi, 1771.20th century cloth. Woodcut vignette on titel-page. 132 pp.* Dutch translation of: Naufrage et aventures de Pierre Viaud, natif de Bordeaux, capitaine de navire, histoire véritable. Bordeaux 1768. - This book tells the extraordinary story of a French seaman who sailed from Bordeaux in February 1765 as mate in the Aimable Suzette, Captain St. Crie, bound for the West Indies. Forced by illness to remain on the small island of St. Louis, off the coast of Saint-Domingue (Haiti), Viaud enters into a partnership with a Haitian resident, monsieur Desclau, to trade goods to Louisiana. They hire a vessel, the Tigre, Captain La Couture, and sail with sixteen passengers and crew on 2 January 1766. During the voyage the ship springs a leak, and on 16 February 1766 runs aground and breaks up on an island off the coast of Florida. Viaud's account of his adventures somehow fell into the hands of the French scholar Jean Gaspard Dubois-Fontanelle who published it at Bordeaux in 1768. Exacly how much is the work of Fontanelle himself is uncertain, but it was an instant bestseller and became one of the most reprinted and translated works of the 18th century. After many years of debate and indecision, the basic framework (at least) of Viaud's account is now regarded as truthful (Howgego V, p.474-474). 'Probably the story of cannibalism accounted for the popularity of this narrative' (Huntress 80C).Not in Tiele or Cat. NHSM; Sabin 99414; Polak 9438. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[LIST OF MONIES OWED TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UPPER HOUSE OF THE CONNECTICUT GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE OCTOBER 1771 SESSION, SIGNED BY ROGER SHERMAN, OLIVER WOLCOTT, AND OTHERS]

[Np, but likely New Haven]. November 1771.. [1]p. plus integral docketing leaf. Folio. Backed with tissue. Faint old fold lines. A few small edge tears at folds, repaired. Minor soiling. Very good. In a red half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. List of monies paid to twelve members of the House of Assistants of the Connecticut General Assembly, signed by several of them, including two future signers of the Declaration of Independence, Roger Sherman and Oliver Wolcott. Sherman is notable as the only person to sign all four of the major foundational documents of United States: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. He also served on the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and later drafted the Connecticut Compromise for the U.S. Constitution, which proposed a bicameral representative government and guaranteed equal representation in the Senate for every state, no matter its size. Wolcott signed not only the Declaration, but also the Articles of Confederation, and later served as Connecticut's fourth governor. This document was likely written in New Haven, which served as the joint capital of Connecticut with Hartford until 1776, hosting the October legislative sessions. In addition to Sherman and Wolcott, it is signed by representatives William Pitkin, Robert Walker, Abraham Davenport, William Samuel Johnson, and Joseph Spencer. The remaining members are noted as having been "paid by receipt." It is docketed on the verso and signed by Joseph Trumbull, deputy to the Assembly. For his time in the House of Assistants (later the Connecticut Senate), Sherman was paid £6/18/0; Wolcott, £5/15/4.

        Principles of Penal Law.

1771 - [Eden, William, Baron Auckland (1744-1814)]. Principles of Penal Law. London: Printed for B. White and T. Cadell, 1771. xxvii, 331 pp. Octavo (9" x 6"). Contemporary calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Some rubbing to extremities, a few small ink spots to boards, front joint starting at ends. Annotation to front free endpaper, early owner signature (of John Graham) to head of title page, text notably fresh. * Second edition. First published in 1771, this important treatise reached its third and final edition in 1775. "The first person to review English criminal law at once critically and comprehensively was William Eden. [His] book is a pioneer treatise. It discusses topics which, under the influence of Bentham and Romilly, aroused much attention in the last years of the eighteenth and the first years of the nineteenth century; and it discussed them effectively, because, as the author says in his closing chapter he had tried to establish his principles not as abstract propositions, 'but rather as argumentative inferences, interwoven with, and to be collected from, observations on the penal systems of different governments. (.) The conclusion which he draws, that the reform of the English penal code 'is become an important and almost necessary work,' is irresistible. (.) The book is a remarkable precursor of that new era of agitation for the reform of the law, which, under Bentham's leadership, was soon to begin.": Holdsworth, A History of English Law XII:364-65.       209 figures on 16 folding engraved plates. Titles in red & black. 2 p.l., xxxvii, [1], 394 pp.; 2 p.l., 444 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. cat's paw sheep (several skillful repairs to bindings), spines gilt, contrasting morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: C.A. Jombert, 1771. First edition. "Although its title was hydrodynamics, its subject matter was essentially hydraulics...The first volume was original only in arrangement and treatment, but it still provides an excellent picture of the state of knowledge (as he saw it) at Bossut's time. The experimental data presented in the second volume were largely new, and noteworthy even today are his comments on the difficulty of large-scale experiments versus the falsity of those at too small a scale."-Rouse & Ince, History of Hydraulics, p. 127. Bossut (1730-1814), assumed the chair of hydrodynamics established by Turgot at the Louvre. He was a major contributor to European scientific education and his texts represent the emergence of a standardized, rigorous system of engineering physics textbooks. Very good set.         Arte de Sombrerero [L'art de faire les chapeaux, in Spanish] Traducido al castellano, de orden de la Real Junta General de Comercio, Moneda, y Minas por D. Miguel Geronymo Suarez y Nu?ez.

Andres Ramirez, [ 1771.], Madrid - First edition in Spanish of L'art de faire les chapeaux, the first systematic and scientific study of the ancient process of hat-making, which Jean-Antoine Nollet had written for the Encyclopédie (1765). It deals with the raw materials, their preparation, manufacturing process and the dyes as well as the styles of hats. The plates, re-engraved for this Spanish edition are detailed depictions of the hatter's craft with excellent workshop scenes.Like his French counterpart Nollet, Suárez y Nu?ez was an enlightened polymath dedicated to the scientific exposition of crafts and industry. His magnum opus was the multi-volume Memorias instructivas, y curiosas: sobre agricultura, comercio, industria, economia, chyimica, botanica, historia natural, &c (1778-1791) translated from pioneering works published across Europe. Small 8vo (146 × 94 mm), pp. [xx], 345, [7], 6 folding engraved plates. Very minor marginal spotting to a few pages, folding plates slightly creased in places with slight soiling at extreme upper margin of one or two. Contemporary limp vellum, title in neat contemporary manuscript to spine. Early inscription "Esteban del Castillo" to front free endpaper and "Valladolid" to verso of final plate, later bookplate of Armando Cotarelo Valledor. A very nice copy indeed in contemporary state.
