Die Inoculation der Liebe. Ein Erzählung.

Leipzig, Weidmanns Erben und Reich 1771. - 8vo. (1) leaf, 70 pp. Frontispiece, title-vignette and cul-de lampe all engraved by Geyser after Oeser. Later boards (slightly rubbed), gilt spine label. First edition. The illustrations in this copy would appear to be in an early state, and not recorded by some authorities (cf. Deusch in: Philobiblon 10 (1966) H. 1. p. 7 and figs. 12 - 14 or Oehler in: Jahrbuch d. Sammlung Kippenberg 5 (1925). p. 88.). For example, the frontispiece lacks the foliage arrangement, and the loving couple are in mirror image, the face of the snake charmer on the title page is less heavily accentuated and the branches of the tree somewhat simpler, and in the final vignette parts of the scenery disappear into the tree foliage. Apparently it would seem that this copy was a proof copy, whose unsatisfactory illustrations led to corrections. Slightly browned throughout (frontispiece and title more intensively), first and last leaved browned at inner margins. Book-block slightly broken, last leaves with worm-track to inner margins. A good copy with very rare engravings. Goed. IV 1, 582, 3; Borst 231 (mentioning zwo different title vignettes); Brieger 1315; Rümann 1148; Lanck./Oehler II, S. 195; Wilp./G. 2; Hayn-G. III, 433 and VII, 648. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Il Libro del Cortegiano del conte Baldassar Castiglione

Vendramini Mosca, Vicenza 1771 - 4 books in 2 volumes: [8]+xvi+255 pages with frontispiece; 205 pages with index and errata. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4) bound in stiff wrappers with lables to spines and deckle edges. This edition not in Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana; however, there are a number of listings for this title in the bibliography (4315 through 4330), listing 16 editions of various dates and publishers. First published in 1528. Baldassare Castiglione, count of Novilara was an Italian courtier, diplomat, soldier and a prominent Renaissance author. He was born into an illustrious Lombard family at Casatico, near Mantua. In 1494, at the age of sixteen, Castiglione began his humanist studies in Milan, which would eventually form his future writings. However, in 1499, after the death of his father, Castiglione left his studies and Milan to succeed his father as the head of their noble family. Soon his duties seem to have included representative offices for the Gonzaga court. For the Gonzaga he traveled quite often; during one of his missions to Rome, he met Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino. Urbino was at that time the most refined and elegant among Italian courts, a meeting point of culture ably directed and managed by duchess Elisabetta Gonzaga and her sister-in-law Maria Emilia Pia. The most constant guests included: Pietro Bembo, Giuliano de' Medici, Cardinal Bibbiena, Ottaviano and Federigo Fregoso, and Cesare Gonzaga, a cousin of both Castiglione and the duke. The hosts and guests organized intellectual competitions which resulted in an interesting, stimulating cultural life producing brilliant literary activity. Castiglione wrote about his works and of those of other guests in letters to other princes, maintaining an activity very near to diplomacy, though in a literary form. In 1516, Castiglione was back in Mantua, where he married Ippolita Torelli, descendant of another ancient noble family; two passionate letters he wrote to her, expressing deep sentiment, have survived, but she unfortunately died only four years later. At that time Castiglione was in Rome again as an ambassador, this time for the Duke of Mantua. In 1521 Pope Leo X conceded to him the tonsura (first sacerdotal ceremony), and thereupon began Castiglione's second, ecclesiastical career. In 1528, the year before his death, the book by which he is most famous, The Book of the Courtier (Il Libro del Cortegiano), was published in Venice by the Aldine Press run by Andrea d'Asolo, father-in-law of Aldus Manutius. The book is based on a nostalgic recreation of Castiglione's experience at the court of Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro of Urbino at the turn of the sixteenth century. It describes the ideal court and courtier, going into great detail about the philosophical and cultured and lively conversations that occurred at Urbino, presided over by Elisabetta Gonzaga. Castiglione himself does not contribute to the discussion, the book is his tribute to his friendship with the participants of the discussion, all of whom went on to have important positions. The Book of the Courtier caught the "spirit of the times" and was soon translated into Spanish, German, French, and English. One hundred and eight editions were published between 1528 and 1616 alone. (Pietro Aretino's La cortigiana is a parody of this famous work.) Castiglione's depiction of how the ideal gentleman should be educated and behave remained, for better or for worse, the touchstone for all the upper classes of Europe for next five centuries. The work on chess is in the second book of this work. Condition: Old stamps to title of volume two and first un-numbered page of volume one, Spine ends chipped with loss to heal, corners bumped, wrappers rubbed else a good copy of scarce title. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Martagum III, the new Crimson Pensilvania Martagon

Christopher Trew, Nuremberg 1771 - Etching, with engraving, coloured by hand, by J.M. Seligmann. Very good condition apart from some mild rippling. A very fine image from the work described by Dunthorne as 'one of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period' and by Blunt (p. 166) as 'one of the most decorative florilegia of the mid-eighteenth century.' A complete copy of this work sold for almost $1,000,000 in London in 2002. The great characteristic of this beautiful plate, from Trew's Hortus Nitidissimus , is the way in which the watercolour and bodycolour painting almost entirely eclipses the engraved lines. Although the work was actually started by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762), the engravings were based on the collection of flower drawings owned by the botanist and bibliophile Christoph Trew, a distinguished physician of Nuremberg. Georg Ehret (1708-1770), who enjoyed Trew's patronage from 1732 and traveled widely on his behalf before settling in London in 1736, produced the designs for 40 of the eventual total of 188 plates. The remainder were drawn up by a team of local artists, including J.C. Keller, Professor of Drawing at Erlangen University, the court painter Nikolaus Eisenberger, and A.L. Wirsing. Cf.         Free Thoughts on Seduction. Adultery, and Divorce With Reflections on the Gallantry of Princes, particularly those of the blood-royal of England. Occasioned by the late intrigue between His Royal Highness the Duke of Cumberland, and Henrietta, wife of the Right Honourable Richard Lord Grosvenor. Also remarks on the trial at law, between his Lordship and his Royal Highness, in consequence of that illicit amour, with observations on the depositions since taken, in the cause depending in Doctors-commons, between Lord Grosvenor and his Lady

London: Printed for J. Bell, 1771. Octavo; half-title restored at an early date, with slightloss of text, a few spots and stains, but a good, uncut copy in green quarter oasis, green cloth sides. First edition. Kenrick was a journalist and playwright known for his inflammatory writings and his attacks on Goldsmith, Boswell and Johnson. Here he points his poisoned pen at the trial regarding the adulterous relationship between the Duke of Cumberland and the wife of the Right Honourable Richard Lord Grosvenor. A unique work for its time in its strongly stated opinions and use of language about sex, adultery and divorce. In 1773 Kenrick published the first English dictionary to include pronunciations.

Pinto\'s experience as a merchant and financier in the Republic, along with his knowledge of French and English economic thought, laid the foundations for his European economic model. Pinto wanted above all to convince his readers of hte soundness of the British system of public debt. With the adoption of improvements in the redemption policy proposed in his book, the system would achieve a high degree of perfection. Riga: Friedrich Hartknoch, 1771.

      - Very rare first German edition of Gerard's influential "Plan of Education in the Marischal College and University of Aberdeen, with the Reasons of it. Drawn up by Order of the Faculty" (Aberdeen, 1755). Contemporary sources list the translator as Gottlieb Schlegel. Through the work of William Smith, founder of the University of Pennsylvania, the Marischal College plan of education did much to mould the shape of university education in America (see John S. Reid, Aberdeen University Review no. 172, 1984, pp. 359-79). Not at NLS. Worldcat records only one copy outside Germany (Denmark, Ballerup). The accompanying Kantian text is the third edition of "Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and the Sublime" (first published in 1764). This was Kant's most popular work, going through eight printings during his lifetime. Light-hearted in tone, it includes comments, typical of the age, on the differences between the sexes and between races. John Zammito and others have viewed it as a kind of proto-anthropology, prefiguring some of Kant's later work. Adickes 38. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small 8vo, [ii], 110, 86 pp., contemporary marbled boards with red label lettered gilt, rubbed, some loss to head of spine, ends of joints starting to split but binding tight and firm, uniform browning and occasional spots, no stamps or inscriptions, sound copies in a sammelband nicely linking the Scottish and German Enlightenments.       Amsterdam, Petrus Conradi, 1771.20th century cloth. Woodcut vignette on titel-page. 132 pp.* Dutch translation of: Naufrage et aventures de Pierre Viaud, natif de Bordeaux, capitaine de navire, histoire véritable. Bordeaux 1768. - This book tells the extraordinary story of a French seaman who sailed from Bordeaux in February 1765 as mate in the Aimable Suzette, Captain St. Crie, bound for the West Indies. Forced by illness to remain on the small island of St. Louis, off the coast of Saint-Domingue (Haiti), Viaud enters into a partnership with a Haitian resident, monsieur Desclau, to trade goods to Louisiana. They hire a vessel, the Tigre, Captain La Couture, and sail with sixteen passengers and crew on 2 January 1766. During the voyage the ship springs a leak, and on 16 February 1766 runs aground and breaks up on an island off the coast of Florida. Viaud's account of his adventures somehow fell into the hands of the French scholar Jean Gaspard Dubois-Fontanelle who published it at Bordeaux in 1768. Exacly how much is the work of Fontanelle himself is uncertain, but it was an instant bestseller and became one of the most reprinted and translated works of the 18th century. After many years of debate and indecision, the basic framework (at least) of Viaud's account is now regarded as truthful (Howgego V, p.474-474). 'Probably the story of cannibalism accounted for the popularity of this narrative' (Huntress 80C).Not in Tiele or Cat. NHSM; Sabin 99414; Polak 9438.

Landreis van 't Prins van Wallis Fort aan Hudson Baai, naar den Noorder-Oceaan.The Hague, J.C. Leeuwenstijn, 1798. 2 volumes. 8vo. With folding map, hand-coloured in outline (41.5×50.5 cm), a folding map of the Coppermine River, and 2 folding views, all engraved and etched. Contemporary half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Chavanne 4635; JCB 3966; Sabin 31184; cf. Lande, Canadiana 1220 (first edition). A Dutch edition of Hearne's expedition in search of the Northwest Passage and the fabled coppermines. A masterpiece in the literature of exploration, it contains interesting details on natural history and the Indian tribes of the region. Travelling overland from the Hudson Bay to the Arctic, Hearne met with many dangers, and very realistically describes the life and customs of the North American Indians. Tracing the Coppermine River, he reached the Arctic Ocean on 17 July, 1771, thus establishing that there was no Northwest Passage through Hudson Bay. In spite of the obvious importance of Hearne's expedition, the results were only published in 1795, after La Pérouse had discovered Hearne's manuscript at Hudson Bay. The present Dutch edition was translated from Johann Reinhold Forster's expertly annotated German edition.Tickets to back pastedowns. Some wear to bindings. An excellent crisp and clean set.

Zobeide. A Tragedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent-Garden

London: T. Cadell, 1771. Octavo, [viii], 80 pp., [iv]; original stitch-holes visible in the gutter, disbound. Teasing Banks from the stage. First edition of this orientalist fantasy (based on Voltaire's unfinished Les Scythes). Since it provides an odd insight into the fame of Banks and Solander on their still very recent return from the Endeavour voyage (they had docked in July, five months earlier) it must be a contender for having the first theatrical allusion to Cook's first voyage. Referring to the play's premiere the night before, an anonymous reviewer (London General Evening Post, 10 December 1771) reported that the highlight of the evening was Oliver Goldsmith's prologue, which 'alludes to the discoveries lately made by Dr. Solander and Mr. Banks. The play is supposed a ship; the theatre a strange company, and the audience characterized under the appellation of different animals. Upon the whole there is merit in the Prologue, and the town was too just to withhold the tribute of approbation.' Banks and Solander were the great heroes of the voyage when it first returned (Magra's unofficial account had already been published with its unauthorised dedication to them for example), but they were subject to endless teasing about the erotic delights of Otaheite. As so often with the eighteenth-century theatre, fuller references and details are scant, but a close reading of the prologue gives wonderful glimpses of the sort of broad farce that one might expect. Spoken by "Mr. Quick, in the Character of a Sailor", it begins: 'In these bold times, when Learning's sons explore / The distant climate, and the savage shore; / When wise astronomers to India steer, / And quit for Venus many a brighter here; / While botanists, all cold to smiles and dimpling, / Forsake the fair, and patiently-go simpling [i.e., gathering plants…]'. The concluding lines suggestively depict the heroic botanist hoping to "drive a thriving trade", with goods that are "equally fit for gallantry and war." When the offer goes unheeded, he decides he'd "best step back - and order up a sample." The play ran for a respectable thirteen nights with the famous Mrs Yates in the title role. Its author Cradock moved in exalted literary circles, and was a member of the "Catch-Club" founded by Lord Sandwich.
