Middelburg, widow of Jakobus Pauwelsen, [6 July 1754, published 25 July]. (3) Ordonnantie op den afslag der Verschen visch, binnen de stad Vere.Vere, Chrristiaan Hendrik Held, [18 May 1771]. (4) [MANUSCRIPT]. Extract uit de notulen van weth[ouders] en raad der stad Vere.[Veere?], [18 July 1772-19 June 1773, 7 April 1787]. (5) Reglement voor die van de haven der stad Vere ter vis-vangst vaaren.Middelburg, Adriaan de Vin, [1 June 1774].With a woodcut Veere coat of arms on the title-page of each of the 4 printed ordinances (3 different blocks). 5 items in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary marbled wrapper backed with plain paper.

Cf. Het Utrechts Archief 53 (De Beaufort family archive), item 242 (similar printed ordinance of 1771); NCC & STCN (2 copies of a 1770 ordinance by the Stadholder); for fishing and the fish tade in Veere: Kees Leeman, De geschiedenis van de Veerse visserij 1250-1961, 2nd ed., 1997. Contemporary collection of 4 extremely rare printed ordinances and regulations concerning fishery and the fish trade at Veere, near Middelburg in Zeeland, none recorded in NCC or STCN, plus 7 manuscript extracts from minutes of the meetings of the Veere city council on the same subject. The city had been a leading fish market place since the Middle Ages, held a privilege for the inspection and taxation of fish caught in the region and authorized the auctioneers. To avoid taxes some people transported fish out of the city before it was sold. The first three ordinances attempted to reassert control over the fish trade, though the fact that the authorities found it necessary to issue new ordinances every few years suggests they were not very successful. Each ordinance refers to the previous one, showing that the Council issued none between these three. The fourth printed item gives guild regulations for fishermen using the city harbour, who are required to register their crew members, keep them orderly and make payments to the guild. The manuscript begins on the final integral blank of the 1771 ordinance. From differences in the handwriting it appears that these extracts of minutes were written over the years as the issues came up in the Council. Amusingly, the family name of the printer and publisher of the 1774 regulations is "De Vin" (The Fin). In very good condition. Spine faded and tattered. A remarkable contemporary collection of unique items concerning fishery and the fish trade in Veere.

These remarks are prefatory to Desnos's advertisement of a new type of writing paper he had developed, and the last eight pages of this work describe that paper.         App. 17 - The Great Laurel

London, third edition 1771 - Mark Catesby (1683-1749) Plate from The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands London, 1731-44 (first edition); [1771, third edition] Hand-colored copperplate engraving Paper size: 20” x 14”; Framed: 24” x 20 1/2” In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. When Catesby returned to England from his final voyage to America in 1726, he was unable to afford the expense of having his drawings engraved professionally. Undeterred, he taught himself to etch with the assistance of Joseph Goupy, a French artist living in London, and went on to produce all but a few of the plates for his publication. He scrupulously monitored the coloring of the engravings, either painting the impressions himself or closely supervising the work to insure its fidelity to his preparatory studies. The result of Catesby’s tenacious effort was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Widely considered a crowning achievement of 18th-century art and science, Catesby’s Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands has lost none of its power to delight in the 250 years since its publication. This remarkable study of American plants, animals, and marine life provided an important model for later artists, including John James Audubon, who followed in Catesby’s footsteps a century later. The works illustrated here are among the masterpieces of Catesby’s Natural History. The artist’s charming, distinctive style is immediately apparent in these engravings, and Catesby’s enthusiasm for his subjects is palpable. Aside from their esthetic charm, however, Catesby’s illustrations were significant for other reasons. His pioneering attempts to describe and portray birds accurately, life-sized, and in botanical settings set him apart from his contemporaries and foreshadowed the work of Audubon and Alexander Wilson. He was the first to abandon the Indian names for his subjects, trying to establish scientific names based on generic relationships. Indeed, the great Linnaeus, working on his Systema Naturae at this time, used Catesby’s work as the basis of his system of binomial nomenclature for American species. For all these and many other reasons, these are magnificent prints both for their beauty and importance. The quality of the work was so far superior to foregoing accounts that many scholars rank Catesby as the first real naturalist in America.

Les Traits de l'Histoire Universelle, Sacrée et Profane. D'apres les plus grands peintres, et les meilleurs écrivains. 4-vol. set (Complete)

Le Bas, Paris 1771 - 12mo. [3], 130, 235, 85, 71 leafs. Decorative paper covered boards with Remarkable narrative of Sacred History, illustrated mostly by Le Maire, but also by Masquelier, du Clos, Gauché, and many others. Le Bas published this further edition in 1771 (the original edition was published between 1760 and 1762). These volumes consist of an unascribed bilingual text (Latin and French) to accompany plates illustrating Biblical scenes along with short interspersed series of scenes drawn from Homer and Virgil and a gallery of Muses by way of conclusion, with captions derived from Ausonius; the plates owe much to Goltzius, Diepenbeeck, and Le Temple des Muses, and anticipate some of Le Mire-Basan's "Métamorphoses Gravées" (Paris, 1770). Bindings rubbed along joints and edges. Corners bumped (not affecting pages throughout). Rear cover of second volume glued. In volume 1, the first leaf of Le Maire's dedication to the Duke of Burgundy is missing. Otherwise, this work is complete! Sporadic and very minor age toning throughout. Text in French and Latin. Bindings in overall fair, interior in good to very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
