London: T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt, 1769-74. 5 volumes, octavo (210 x 127 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, titles to blue and green sheep labels to flat spine, gilt banded, edges sprinkled green. This set with two bookplates to front endpapers in each volume, excepting volume II; an armorial bookplate to the front pastedowns, and the bookplate of Samuel Bagster Boulton (1830-1918) to the front free endpapers; Boulton was the first baronet of Copped Hall, Totteridge. First editions of the last three volumes, bound uniformly with the revised and corrected second editions of the first two volumes. Thornton had announced his intention to translate Plautus into English verse as early as December 1762, publishing specimens in Robert Lloyd's St James's Magazine. Volumes I and II were first published in 1767. To these volumes, George Colman, to whom the translation was dedicated, contributed the translation of Mercator, while Richard Warner translated Captivi and supplied some of the critical matter. After Thornton's death Warner completed the project in three further volumes using Thornton's partial translations of two further plays. "An esteemed translation, accompanied with excellent notes from the best commentators" (Lowndes). Volume I with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front pastedown, heir to a successful chain of dispensing chemists, based in Nelson, Lancashire: "A collector of books, in a delightful room at his home, white-painted … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oxidationsschatten durch beigelegtes Blatt eines Kataloges, St. a. V., Ebd. berieben u. fleckig, hds. Notiz des Autoren a. T., leicht fleckig, angestaubt, leichte Gbrsp. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

FOOT, John
London: R. Davis, 1769. 8vo., 51 + (1)pp., occasional light spotting, well bound in 18th century style quarter calf gilt. A very good copy inscribed in ink in a contemporary hand, 'Written by John Horne Tooke, C.J.' Wellcome III, p.39 (but with only 47pp.) Although John Horne [Tooke]'s authorship is at least open to question, it is absolutely certain that Horne was closely involved in the case. In 1768 Horne was intimately engaged with the return of Wilkes from the Continent and the famous Middlesex election. (He himself had been presented with the living of a chapel-of-ease at Brentford in 1760 and had erratically taken up his duties there). It was certainly Horne, moreover, who had promoted the prosecution of Edward Quirk (alias Edward Kirk or M'Quirk), who, during a riot at the next election at Brentford (8 Dec. 1768), had killed a man, one George Clarke, by a blow to the head with a bludgeon. The Brentford killing is notable, not only as a minor illumination on John Horne's Brentford days, but as a modest medico-legal cause célèbre. John Foot, a surgeon of Holles Street, Cavendish Square [London], was professionally insulted when the convicted killer - largely convicted on Foot's own professional evidence of the medical results of the blow to the victim's head - had his conviction quashed by royal warrant on the grounds that death could have been caused by a previous medical condition unrelated to the blow. Foot's Appeal> describes in detail his medical findings, including his examination of the skull and the brain, relates his evidence at the Old Bailey trial and his e … [Click Below for Full Description]
