HESS, Joachim.
- [Advertisement] in: Opregte Haerlemse courant, 27 (1769), p. [2]; Boers, "Bouwstoffen tot eene Nederlandsche muzikale litteratuur", in: Caecilia VI, 2 (1849), p. 15; STCN (2 copies). Very rare second and enlarged edition of an introduction in learning to play keyboard instruments. In the preface, the author writes that the first edition of the treatise was highly praised and quickly sold out. As this necessitated a second edition, he used the occasion to add "everything which came to my mind while instructing [from the book]" (*2r) and include an engraved plate. In this "short and simple manual" the author gives the basics of musical staff notation and of playing basso continuo. Over the next 50 years, the book went through numerous editions but at the time proved to be too complicated for beginners. Therefore, Hess wrote a simplified edition of the book, containing more explanations and an extra illustration, which was published in 1808. No copies of the first edition of the Korte en eenvoudige handleyding could be located, nor could they be identified in any source (cf. Boers).Joachim Hess (1732-1819) was an organist and writer, who wrote several treatises on organs and organ playing. For almost sixty years he played the Moreau organ in the Sint-Janskerk in Gouda, which was changed according to his specifications. In his publications he gives great knowledge of all matters related to the organ and he was famous throughout the Netherlands for both his writing and his playing. With the title-page and the inner part and outer margin of the folding plate browned where they t … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUSTACHIUS, Bartolomeo:
Venetiis [Venice], Typis Bartolomaei Locatelli ('accurata & pulcherrima Veneta editio, summo studio elaborata, atque diligentissime aere incisa'), 1769. Large folio (approximately 420 x 300 mm), with an engraved frontispiece portrait, title page printed in red and black (with an engraved title vignette of a dissection), and 21 plates of anatomical subjects containing approximately 225 figures, engraved after Eustachius' plates by 'Petrus Monaco'. Early plain laced limp boards, with a few chips or short tears to the spine; a few light and inoffensive stains to the plates, well clear of the illustrations (the first five have a small light spot near the top margin, the balance have a tidemark to the bottom inside corner, becoming larger and more visible only towards the end); the first two plates are slightly cropped along the top edge, affecting a few captions; trifling production flaws to a few plates (occasional creases caused by the drawing of such large sheets through the rolling press; smudges where the copper plate was not wiped completely clean); one old pencil annotation in Italian; one old tear to the front flyleaf expertly sealed; trifling signs of use and age; overall an excellent copy of this rare work, in attractive original condition. Bartolomeo Eustachius (circa 1510/20-1574) completed the plates in 1554. Less stylized than those of his contemporary and antagonist Vesalius, his anatomical illustrations are remarkably accurate despite his support of the old Galenic theories of anatomy. The copper plates remained unpublished in his lifetime and were rediscovered … [Click Below for Full Description]

SYDENHAM, Thomas (1624-1689)
Geneva: Fratres de Tournes, 1769. Later edition. Two volumes, 4to. Contemporary French cat's-paw calf, gilt decorated on spine, red and green morocco lettering-pieces. A fine copy of an early edition of the works of the "Father of English Medicine." "Sydenham recorded significant observations on dysentery, scarlet fever, scarlatina, measles and other conditions. He stressed the clinical study of medicine and kept careful case records" (See Garrison-Morton-Norman 2198). Sydenham's conceptions of hysteria (see Hunter & Macalpine, pp. 221-224) are expressed in the dissertation "ad Guilielmum Cole" (vol. 1, pp. 230-284). The "podagra and hydrope" (vol. I, pp. 300-349) contains the first complete and precise clinical description of gout, which Sydenham knew well from having suffered it. He advises to avoid the wine and the meats of game. (See Printing and the Mind of Man 159 for the original edition of this treatise). The publisher has added to the works of Sydenham the important memoirs of Musgrave on gout and on the joint complications of gonorrhea (see Copeman, A short history of the gout, 5, 7, 8, 85, 146, 147). Musgrave was secretary of the Royal Society of London. See Garrison-Morton-Norman 2198. Early effaced inscriptions on titles, rear cover of volume one slightly buckled, generally fine and crisp / From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D.

ANQUETIN
Paris: Chez l'auteur, rue de Thionville n° 1769, AN IX (1801). In-4 (29*22 cm), demi basane, 184 pp., quelques figures.. Quérard, I, 68. . (Catégories : Mathématiques Arithmétique )
