First Spanish edition. The voyage was destined mostly to the East Indies, but the true object was to make discoveries in the South Seas -New Albion on the American North West coast amongst other places. Byron (1723 - 1786) sailed in 1764 in the Dolphin with junior officers Charles Clerke and John Gore. Both Clerke and Gore later sailed with James Cook, with Clerke taking command of the final voyage after Cook's death. Byron visited Brazil and then continued south through severe storms and ice for Patagonia and through the Strait of Magellan, relating one of the best accounts of the Strait to date -from this part of the voyage; he earned the name 'Foul-Weather Jack'. The expedition was searching for rumored islands and in the process identified a few new off the Falklands before being forced back to the Strait by storms. Ashore in Patagonia, he reported on the eight-foot tall Indians he found there (the famous meeting is shown in the frontispiece), and finally sighted the Falklands. He claimed them for England, unaware that Bougainville had recently claimed them for France. Ignoring his instructions to sail for New Albion, he headed for Juan Fernandez and the Tuamotus, where he discovered Danger Island and others in the Tokelaus and Gilberts before making for the Philippines, Sumatra, Cape of Good Hope and then home to England. Although no significant discoveries were made, thanks to the speed of the voyage, no men were lost to scurvy, the Falklands were secured for England and the Admiralty was stirred to make further exploratory voyages into the South Pacific. PASTA Andrea
[Click Below for Full Description]

TISSOT, [S.A.].
Lausanne: Chez Franç. Grasset et Comp., à Lyon: Chez Benoit Duplain, 1769. In-12; [xii], 224p.

London: Printed for William Randall Successor to the late Mr. J. Walsh in Catharine Street in the Strand, 1769. First complete edition. Smith no. 4. BUC p. 435. RISM H637. "Many of the pages are from the plates as issued in Walsh's [earlier] editions, but with extra bass figurings, and with the original pagination and singers' names cleaned off. The earliest copies of Randall's 'Judas Maccabaeus' contain the Houbraken portrait in untouched condition such as it was originally issued by Walsh with 'Alexander's Feast', the plate not being used for Randall and Abell's 'Messiah' (1767) but in later issues of that work and other Randall scores after 'Judas Maccabaeus'." Smith p. 114. Judas Maccabaeus was first performed in London at Covent Garden on April 1, 1747 to text by Thomas Morell based on biblical incidents. Composed to celebrate the English victory at Culloden and the return to London of the victorious general, the Duke of Cumberland, in celebration of his suppression of the 1745 rebellion, it contains the noted chorus 'See, the conquering hero comes'. "It was highly successful and proved to be one of the most enduringly popular of the oratorios, though the alterations made for later revivals tended to emphasize its jubilant and military elements rather than the pleas for reconciliation and peace which Morell had thoughtfully incorporated and Handel had carefully set. The early performances also included a concerto for orchestra with two wind groups, the first of three such works partly but very effectively arranged from earlier music (especially choruses).
