Angélique-Marguerite LE BOURSIER DU COUDRAY
Saintes: Chez Pierre Toussaints, 1769. [Click Below for Full Description]

LÖHE, Joh. Conrad);
Nürnberg Verlag der Martin Jacob Bauerischen Buchhandlung 1769 - EA; ca 20x13 cm; 414 (2) Seiten mit gest. Titelvignette; Kartoneinband d. 0,000 gr. Reliure en plein veau brun marbré d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Mors fendus. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First french edition, translated by Frénais. Binding full brown marbled vintage calf. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, H.L. & DE LA MARRE, L.H.
Paris, Saillant & Nyon/ Desaint, 1769-1782. 4 volumes bound in 12. Folio (445 x 290mm). With 250 folding engraved plates. Later half calf, gilt ornamented spines with blue label. First edition. A rare complete copy of 'one of the finest works on fishing and fisheries in any language' (Westwood p. 82). This superbly illustrated work with large folding plates shows marine- as well as freshwater fishing, all kinds of fishing equipment, different types of fishing boats, as well as fishermen and their dresses of the various French regions. About half the plates show marine or freshwater fishes. Most of the plates have scenic backgrounds. Henri Louis Duhamel (1700-1782) was an exponent of the French enlightenment and wrote quite a number of books of scientific as well of economic interest. In 1732 he was appointed 'inspecteur généneral de la marine'.This large monument on fishes and fishing shows the enormous economic importance of this branch of industry. The publication was an integral part of the 'Descriptions des Arts et Métiers' and was often sold separately."The scientific interests of Duhamel were broad. While he was concerned with the descriptions of the handicrafts of candle-making and the refining of sugar of those or the locksmith, the slater, and the maker of playing cards, and although we are likely impressed by the extensive treatise on fishes and commercial fishing which forms a part of the 'Descriptions', his fame rests perhaps largely upon his studies in agriculture and the allied field of forestry. Duhamel du Monceau presents a figure of the benign scientist suc … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAWKESWORTH, John (editor).
1769. Beddie 658; cf. Hill 783; Holmes 5; Sabin 30945; O' Reilly & Reitman 367-370. First Dutch edition of an important collection of accounts of recent English maritime expeditions, including Cook's first expedition, edited by John Hawkesworth. "John Byron, in the Dolphin, visited the Tuamoto Islands and Nikunau in what would later be called the Gilbert Islands . . . Captain Wallis, also in the Dolphin, discovered the volcanic island of Tahiti, which he named King George III Island, and Moorea . . . Captain Carteret, in command of the Swallow, became separated from Captain Wallis and was feared lost. He discovered Pitcairn Island and some remote atolls in the South Seas. The first voyage under the not-yet-famous Captain Cook's command, on the Endeavour, was primarily of scientific nature . . . Entering the Pacific around Cape Horn, Cook reached Tahiti in 1769 and carried out the necessary astronomical observations. Excellent relations with the Tahitians were maintained, and Sir Joseph Banks . . . and Daniel C. Solander carried out extensive ethnological and botanical research. Leaving Tahiti in July, Cook discovered, named, and charted the Society Islands, and . . . explored New Zealand . . . Cook then headed towards Australia and discovered and charted the eastern coast . . ., naming the area New South Wales. Cook's discoveries won him prominence, promotion, and the opportunity to sail again. They also ensured John Hawkesworth's position in maritime literary history, as the official chronicler of Cook's first voyage'' (Hill).With some water stains at the head of 1 quire ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

Before the trial John Paffard will have conveyed it to his friend John Webb, the defendant, for a nominal sum. Another friend, Henry Cutler, sues Webb for possession, alleging dispossession by a fictitious Hugh Hunt. Called to warrant Webb's title, Paffard in turn calls the court crier, Thomas Francis Martin, to say, untruthfully, that Martin had sold the lands to Paffard as a freehold. The process ends with judgment against Webb and Martin, and with Cutler in freehold possession. John Paffard has rid himself of all entails and encumbrances on the property, and will soon get it back from Cutler. Wilmot, a fellow pupil with Dr. Johnson at Lichfield, took part in the cases arising from John Wilkes' libels.
