The views offered here of Mangazey and other Siberian cities are based on drawings made during the Great Northern Expedition (1733–1743), ordered by Empress Anna Ioanovna. Under the leadership of Vitus Bering the expedition was charged with mapping the eastern reaches of Siberia a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plutarch [Dryden]
J. Williams in Skinner Row (but possibly by J & R Tonson in London, for the Irish market), 1769. 6 volumes. A rare and very attractive printing. With a beautiful engraved frontispiece to volume one, each "life" is accompanied with a large engraved portrait in oval, in the style of a Roman broach or coin, for those few for whom no reliable likeness was available, empty frames have been cleverly placed where the portrait would otherwise be located. 8vo, bound in handsome contemporary polished calf over correct 18th century marbled boards, the spines with double gilt rules bordering the raised bands, one compartment with red morocco lettering label gilt and one compartment with volume numbers on contrasting green morocco labels in gilt. lxiv, 382; 468; 468; 431; 467; 245, index pp. A fine and handsome set in full period state with no sophistication or restoration. Some light age wear to the edges, but a very well preserved set, clean internally, crisp and unpressed and the bindings in good order. A RARELY SEEN PRINTING, AND A VERY PLEASING SET, HANDSOMELY BOUND AT THE TIME. Plutarch continues to be one of our most important sources for the history of Greece and Rome and is also well-known as a primary source for the plots of Shakespeare's classical plays and for numerous passages in the non-Roman ones. The great bard relied almost exclusively on Plutarch's writings for the historical background of ancient Rome. The Lives of Plutarch (ca. AD 50 - ca. 125) was one of the most influential works of antiquity, and was the most popular work at the time of the Renaissance. The Lives … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEGRAND D'AUSSY
Eugene Onfroy, Paris. Paris, Eugene Onfroy, 1769. 3 volumes, in 8°, 414, 430, 468 pp. Première édition. *** Binding: contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt, minor rubbing only but a very good clean tight set with no evidence of wear or use, First edition, A landmark treasury of translations and extracts in prose and verse from French manuscripts of the 12th and 13th Century, and long been regarded as a standard work on the subject. YOSHIMASU, Todo
28; 31 folding leaves. Two vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (rubbed), new stitching. [Kyoto?]: Heian Shorin, 1769.First edition and a very rare book. Yoshimasu (1702-73), was one of the innovative practitioners of his time. While beginning his career as a surgeon and obstetrician, he began to question established medical hypotheses of his time, especially those which came from China. He ultimately embraced the original teachings of the ancient Chinese physician Henjaku (or in Japan Katsu ju or Hakunin) as expressed in his book Nan kiyo (or Hachi ju-ichi nankyo or Nankyo hongi). He also wrote an extremely influential book Ruishu-ho [trans.: Indications of Kampo Prescriptions] which circulated in manuscript before its posthumous publication in 1799.Written at the end of his career, the Iji Wakumon is a summary of the author's medical beliefs and is somewhat more philosophical than practical. In this work, Yoshimasu argues that the human life span was decided by the gods, criticizes the speculative approach of the Goseiha School, stresses abdominal palpation therapy and the use of strong purging methods. He believed that all diseases came from one poison that could affect different sites to produce various symptoms.Fine copy.

- 2. Butterworth sculpt. Leeds." Hand-colored highlighting in pink and green. Some light soiling, relatively small ink stain in lower blank margin, and a few repairs. Overall in good condition, if just barely so. *** FIRST EDITION. Priestley's Description of a New Chart of History, initially published in London the same year, was meant to accompany and explain this chart. According to ESTC, below the imprint of the second edition of the book, 1770, in square brackets, was noted that the price of the book alone was 1 s. 6d. or with the Chart 10s. 6d. Most extant copies of editions of the book seem to lack the chart. There were at least ten subsequent and revised editions by 1801, and one edition published in the U.S. before 1800, in New Haven in 1792. No later edition before 1806 is listed in American Imprints. A New Chart of History is said to have gone through fifteen editions by 1816. According to Josiah, JCB has only the New Haven, 1792 edition, without the chart.Priestley, English theologian, Dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, grammarian, educator, and liberal political theorist, who published over 150 works, published A New Chart of History and its prose explanation as a supplement to his Lectures on History and General Policy.
