[Bushe, Gervase P.]
Boston: Edes & Gill, 1769. 4to. 15, [1 blank] pp. Stitched. Light to moderate spotting, Good+. Originally published in London in 1768, this is the second American edition, and the only American printing to which Howes accorded the 'aa' rating for scarcity . It was preceded by the Philadelphia edition several weeks earlier in 1769. This important defense of the American right to self-government "urges that England abandon colonial taxation, and that the colonies be permitted to act voluntarily" [Howes.] The Colonists "have a right to tax themselves by their representatives, in their provincial assemblies, and that none of them vote for representatives in the British Parliament; and that all of them are to enjoy the freedom of British subjects." The arguments against the American side are "very weak and very few." The Americans' rights "are derived from time, from compact, and from nature." Howes B1039aa. Adams Independence 64e. Evans 11194.

Ghedini Fernand' Antonio
COMPAGNIE DES INDES -
A Paris, De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1769. 2 volumes in 1. (4), 294, (2), 124 pp.; (2), 50 pp. 4to. Contemporary half calf, raised bands, green label with gilt lettering, worn and rubbed, spine damaged, joints split, but solid. First work: Kress S.4166; Goldsmiths 9478A; Einaudi 1659; Higgs 2007; JFBL D341; not in INED; not in Sabin. First edition. Joseph François Dupleix (1697-1763), French colonial administrator. Dupleix revolutionized the policy of the European powers during the critical period of their expansion into India and the Far East. Taking advantage of temporary French superiority of sea power in Indian waters he was able by means of skilful diplomatic intervention among the Indian princes to make himself the leading European influence in India. He changed the hitherto merely commercial interests of the French and British East India companies into a rivalry for territorial and political control. His ambition developed from the conviction that he could extend French influence beyond the coastal trading ports into the interior and erect there a political hegemony which would not only pay its own way but also vastly expand trading opportunities and produce for France and the French East India Company a revenu 'fixe, constant et abondant'. His ambitious policy failed in the end and he had to return to France where he was received with honour untill he submitted 'ses créances', which were considered disappointing. The ensuing trial ruined Dupleix who died in 1763, poor. Cet homme … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith p. 114. Judas Maccabaeus was first performed in London at Covent Garden on April 1, 1747 to text by Thomas Morell based on biblical incidents. Composed to celebrate the English victory at Culloden and the return to London of the victorious general, the Duke of Cumberland, in celebration of his suppression of the 1745 rebellion, it contains the noted chorus 'See, the conquering hero comes'. "It was highly successful and proved to be one of the most enduringly popular of the oratorios, though the alterations made for later revivals tended to emphasize its jubilant and military elements rather than the pleas for reconciliation and peace which Morell had thoughtfully incorporated and Handel had carefully set. The early performances also included a concerto for orchestra with two wind groups, the first of three such works partly but very effectively arranged from earlier music (espec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original calf boards with gilt tooling [joints cracked but holding], raised spine bands with decorative gilt tooling and title [rubbed, some small chips]. Marbled endpapers with matching marbled fore-edges of textblock. Text lightly tanned with minimal foxing. Very Good. This is a new edition of Maubert de Gouvest's LETTRES IROQUOISES published in 1752, containing thirty-six of the forty-three letters found in the original. The fictional story, centering around a Native American Iroquois traveling through Europe and North America, is told in a series of letters. The basic theme is that of an Iroquois traveler named "Igli" who has been sent to France on some type of recognizance mission. His letters to his Chief in Canada raise questions about the absurdities and injustices of French society, especially its subservience to the ruling monarchy and an oppressive church. Interspersed with his more serious reflections on the French, Igli gives detailed descriptions of the wonderful sights in Europe, such as the beautiful women with their charming playfulness and the lush gardens. [Yale University Library Gazette, Vol. 72, No. 3/4, April 1998, Page 172; Dobie: TRADING PLACES: COLONIZATION AND SLAVERY IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FRENCH CULTURE. 2010. Pages 180-1.] Maubert de Gouvest (1721-1767) was a French writer, known for his irreverent style and for a large collection of works which often appeared anonymously and under fictitious imprints.
