Gellert, C.F. (Christian Fuerchtegott).
Copenhagen, 1769. 12 cm x 19 cm. 214 pages. Original Hardcover / 18th century half leather with paper-covered boards. Good condition but with some rubbing and fading to spine and frontcover and some occasional foxing. Upper hinge slightly damaged. Very scarce ! From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen - Translator Erik Haugaard. (Wikipedia) Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (4 July 1715 - 13 December 1769) was a German poet, one of the forerunners of the golden age of German literature that was ushered in by Lessing. He was born at Hainichen in Saxony, at the foot of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). After attending … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIFORMA DEGLI ORDINI RELIGIOSI - MISCELLANEA (-)
1769. Paris, 1755-69. 6 titoli in 1 vol. in-12° (17 x 10), di pp. 51; pp. 24; pp. 33; pp. 385; pp. 55; pp. 196. Leg. piena pelle coeva dorso ornato. [Click Below for Full Description]

EUSTACHI Bartolomeo
1769. In-folio (mm 450x295). Legatura moderna in mezza pergamena. [Click Below for Full Description]

It will be found also in the trial, fact, that no military force can do this---it never did so long as the terms only of government remained ; it cannot assess or collect ; it may raise a contribution by military execution-but that, is not government, it is war....If the people are indeed in rebellion--it is a necessary war; but if they neither make nor intend any opposition by force or arms--if they have continued, & do continue, to pay the duties--what is there for the troops to do?..."" SONS OF LIBERTY. WILLIAM RUSSELL
Boston, Massachusetts, 1769. No binding. Fine. Autograph Document, Boston, Massachusetts, August 14, 1769, 1 p., with additional writing on verso. These patriotic toasts-written on the fourth anniversary of Boston's Stamp Act Riot-defiantly salute American liberty. The writer may have numbered among the 350 Sons of Liberty who celebrated the event at a dinner in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He would have been in good company: John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Adams were among the guests. Transcript ""Wilks & LibertyMay the Sons of Liberty Shine With Lustre. Boston { August the 14th. 1769Liberty without End. Amen. Americans 92 Wilks 45""Historical BackgroundThis document was found in the papers of William Russell (1748-1784), a schoolteacher, early member of the Sons of Liberty and Boston Tea Party participant. The writing on the verso, comprising the word ""Answer"" followed by several monetary figures, suggests that the toasts were drafted on a page from an old exercise book. Russell may have written all or part of the document. Though he is not among those listed as having attended the anniversary dinner, he may well have been a participant. The much hated Stamp Act of 1765, Britain's first attempt to impose a direct tax on the colonies, spawned the seeds of revolution in America. Cries of ""Taxation Without Representation"" echoed through the streets, stamp distributors were burned in effigy, and British goods were boycotted. That spirit of rebellion gave rise to the Sons of Liberty, a secretive group of patriots dedicated to opposing British tyranny. On Au … [Click Below for Full Description]

1769. saying that "In spite of the heat I must write you a line to tell you how we got on after Cairo. When I despatched my letter to you on the 4th Augt I went up in a carriage to the Citadel and had a splendid view of the Pyramids both of Giza and Cairo. You remember that Mehmet Ali put the Mamelukes to death in this Castle and the place where one of them jumped his horse over and escaped and where they were buried is shown. The Mosque in the Citadel and palace are most beautiful. I shall leave with ... a piece of the marble ... send it to you. We went on at 10 am to Suez, a miserable place 90 miles from Cairo and over the veritable desert it was a perfect waste of sand. Suez looked very warm, the steamers lay enclosed about 2 miles from the village, and we were conveyed to them by a small tug. The place where they said the Israelites passed is about 1 mile from Suez, the only reason for it being that the water is shallower there than elsewhere. The Arab boys dive wonderfully well altho the water is far from clear, they pick up 6 with ease. The land on each side of the Gulf of Suez is high and arid and looks very hot; about Sunday we passed the range of which Mt Sinai & Horeb are peaks but no one could say positively which was which, after the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea (which by the way is of Meditterranean blueness) widens and we lose sight of land. The whole navigation is very intricate and a native pilot is kept with the vessel as far as Aden. We are all pretty well ... it is not good to say anything about its being warm. Giovan Battista PIRANESI (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Roma 1778)
Acquaforte e bulino, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Isaak TIRION (1705 ca. - 1765)
A nice example of Tirion's plan of New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi River. The map was most likely drawn from Jeffery's large plan of the same 3 regions, published 10 years earlier. STORK, William (d. 1768), and John BARTRAM (1699-1777)
London: Sold by W. Nicol ... and T. Jefferys, 1769. Quarto. [4],viii,40,[2],xii,35,[1]pp. Large engraved folding map and two engraved folding plans. Minor browning, minor wormhole in the lower margin. Contemporary speckled calf, expertly rebacked to style retaining the original red morocco lettering piece The third and by far the best edition of one of the most important 18th-century works on Florida, with significant additions and fine maps not found in the previous editions. One of only two published works by famed American botanist John Bartram. Great Britain took possession of Florida in the peace settlement of the French and Indian War in 1763, opening the region to exploration and development by the English. In the winter of 1765-66, promoter William Stork and naturalist John Bartram explored the eastern part of Florida, up the St. Johns River near present day Jacksonville. "The celebrated botanist's journal complements Stork's promotional account, and both are among the most important sources for the history of East Florida" (Streeter). Stork describes the importance of East Florida to Great Britain, especially regarding commerce and relations with the Spanish settlements. Bartram's journal is prefaced by an 8pp. "catalogue of plants that may be useful in America" [i.e. in Florida] compiled for Stork by John Ellis. The journal itself is delightful: the daily thoughts and observations of probably the greatest 18th-century American naturalist. It runs from 19th December 1765 to February 12th 1766 and includes details of the places visited and the people encou … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of this anonymous French anthology on the art of happiness and pleasure, mainly concerning its psychological and moral aspects - as in both virtue and vice. A rather clandestine collection of treatises, the title roughly translates as The Temple of Happiness, or a Collection of the Most Excellent Treatises on Happiness, Taken from the Best Authors Ancient and Modern. A corrected “nouvelle” edition, augmented with a fourth volume, followed in 1770 and is more commonly found. Although published anonymously, this work has widely been (by British Museum and Bibliothèque Nationale de France catalogues and Quérard [La France littéraire]) attributed to Jean-François de Dreux du Radier (1714–1780), who published an earlier Temple du Bonheur in 1740, although this attribution with the current work is still contested (see Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, 1806–09). According to the 1995 publication the Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France 1769–1789 by Robert Darnton, the Temple du Bonheur was confiscated by customs in 1775 and Dreux du Radier was exiled for “seditious talk.” This is a rare work with a complicated history (authorship and details of the censorship in question), but it … [Click Below for Full Description]

This example is dissected and laid on to linen and preserved within the original 18th century slip case, which has section 3 from the index map cut and pasted on to the upper side. Below this is pasted an old label inscribed 'Part of Dury and Andrews's Survey of Kent 1769. The only specimen I have seen in this form. F.W. Cook. 1918'. Dresden, 1769. Radierung von O(tto) C(christian) Sahler. Blattgr. 43 x 31 cm. - Bildgr.: 36 x 25 cm. - - - PLEASE NOTE: ORDERED BOOKS WILL BE SHIPPED NOT BEFORE 14/02/2018 !!!
