Vauvilliers, J.F.
Paris, chez Desaint, 1769. One volume in 12mo; pp. VIII, 174, (2); contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with some gilding and red gilt lettering-piece, sprinkled edges, age-toning throughout, else clean, a good copy. Scarce first edition.J.-F. de Vauvilliers (1738-1801) was a famous hellenist and a professor at the Collège de France. He made contributions to the Éphémérides du Citoyen and was an adherent of the physiocratic school. In this work he argues against Mably's "Doutes proposées aux philosophes économistes". Mably pretended that the institution of landed property was neither right nor necessary for the prosperity of society, and he used Sparte as the example claiming that landed property had been absent in this ancient Greek state. Vauvilliers shows in his work that (without landed property) the prosperity of the lacedemonians was by far not as durable as Mably pretended.
2 works in 1 volume as issued, octavo (193 x 124 mm). Contemporary green vellum, red morocco label to spine, gilt armorial device at head of spine, red speckled edges, red silk page marker. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. Covers a little bowed, else a highly appealing copy. First edition of the prospectus for Morellet's planned but ultimately unrealised Dictionnaire de commerce, issued with his Catalogue, considered "the first bibliography of economic literature" (Carpenter, p. 2). "This prospectus, which is undoubtedly one of the very best specimens of that class of works, was intended to exhibit the principles and plan of a Commercial Dictionary, in the compilation of which Morellet was then actively engaged, which was to extend to five, or perhaps six, volumes folio. And from his acknowledged learning and talent, the liberality of his views, and his capacity for laborious exertion, there can be no doubt, had the projected Dictionary made its appearance, that it would have been infinitely superior to that of Savary, or any other that had then been published. Morellet continued to occupy himself with this gigantic enterprise down to the Revolution, when he was compelled finally to abandon it" (McCulloch, p. 62). Blackstone, Sir William
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1769. First Edition. Very Good. Four quarto volumes (250 x 194 mm) with the engraved "Table of Consanguinity" and folding "Table of Descendants" in Volume II. Contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked to style with gilt to boards and spine. All edged stained yellow. Some very slight rubbing to extremities but pleasing overall. Internally an excellent copy, with marbled endpapers and only minimal foxing in the text. "Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation...If the English constitution survived the troubles of the next century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was in part due to the enormous success of Blackstone's work" (Printing and the Mind of Man). First published in 1765, Blackstone made a complex legal system based on precedents, accessible to the average reader. The publication and great success of these commentaries marked a dramatic shift in the popular perception of the law within England and they became required reading for practitioners and scholars alike for many years. [Mexico] Rodriguez de Sagrada, Joseph Manuel
First edition of this peculiar account of a miraculous intervention in Mexico, in which Manuel Carrera, commissioned with fixing the watch of the Convent of Saint Francis of Queretaro, visited the chambers of Father Andres Picazo Minister of the Province of Saint Peter and Saint Paul of Michoacan on 11 February 1769 and left the chambers decided to kill him over a dispute on the time and manner the watch should be placed; the account tells us how the assailant shot several times at the Priest, then hit him with the "trabucos" [pistols], and finally knifed him, all with little success, to the only defense from part of the Priest of kneeling down praying to the Holy Virgin. Then follows with a narrative of the trial that followed. Finally it gives us a historical relation of the devotion of the people of Queretaro to the Holy Image of Our Lady of Pueblito [chapter xvii 'Apendice succinto, en que se da razon del origen de la Santa Imagen de Nuestra Senora del Pueblito, y progressos de su culto'] beginning in 1632 when idolatry was still persistent in a population nearby Queretaro despite the efforts of missionaries, when Father Nicolas de Zamora received the image and placed it in the same place where the Indians adored their gods: the idolatrers, the relation tells us, stopped, and became devout of the image. The illustration comprises a full-page woodcut of the Nuestra Senora del Pueblito of Queretaro, engraved by Navarro in Mexico it portrays the Lady of El Pueblito flanked by two putti and with a priest kneeling before her holding three spheres. TIMOR
Paris, Imprimerie de Knapen, 1769. ______ Format : In-8. Collation : 42 pp. Reliure : Cartonnage papier marbré moderne. Dance of Death
1769. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredible mid-18th-century printing of the famed 'Dance of Death' filled with fascinating macabre illustrations by Hans Holbein. Hans Holbein was a 16th-century German portraitist known for his classic style depicting death, macabre, and other dark themes. Holbein is mostly remembered for his illustrated 'Dance of Death.' In 1715, the 'Dance of Death' work was taken over by the Mechel publishing house who used some of Georg Scharffenberg's illustrations in addition to Holbein's original thirty. These 41 illustrations depict skeletons and creatures of death interacting with humans. An incredible work! [Attributes: First Edition]

St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1769-1771. First edition, and a very fine copy, of Euler's rare work on optics, ‘widely known and important in the physics of the eighteenth century' and which ‘laid the foundations of the calculation of optical systems' (DSB). The first volume presents his general theory of optics, including his prediction of the possibility of constructing achromatic lenses. The second and third volumes discuss the construction of the telescope and the microscope. “Next to the lunar theory, the most important subject which exercised the genius of [18th century] mathematicians was the improvement of the achromatic telescope” (<i>Edinburgh Encyclopedia</i>, Vol. 6). “In the second half of his life, from 1750 on and throughout his sixties, Leonhard Euler worked intensively on problems in geometric optics. His goal was to improve in several ways optical instruments, in particular, telescopes and microscopes. Besides the determination of the enlargement, the light intensity and the field of view, he was primarily interested in the deviations from the point-by-point imaging of objects (caused by the diffraction of light passing through as system of lenses), and also in the even less tractable deviations which arise from the spherical shape of the lenses… As was his custom, he collected his results in a grandly conceived textbook, the <i>Dioptrica</i> (1769-1771). AMERICAN REVOLUTION - [Gervase BUSHE]
James Williams, Dublin, 1769. [4], 43, [1]pp. Half-title. Uncut. Original stitched blue paper wrappers (re-used from a remainder parts wrapper to another contemporary work). A pro-American pamphlet advocating self-government: a lovely uncut example in original wrappers. This tract attributed to Bushe, an Irish MP, urges that England abandon the idea of colonial taxation and allow America greater self government, arguing that this policy would benefit England more in the end. The work even goes so far as to make the recommendation that Britain "should leave the Americans to tax themselves and that a law should be passed immediately repealing every act that taxes the colonies."
