George Anson
London: H. Woodfall, W. Bowyer, W. Strahan et al, 1769. Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson PC, FRS, RN (1697 - 1762) was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. During his time in office Anson instituted a series of reforms to the Royal Navy. While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Commodore George Anson led a squadron of eight ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Returning to Britain in 1744 by way of China and thus completing a circumnavigation, the voyage was notable for the capture of an Acapulco galleon but also horrific losses to disease with only 188 men of the original 1,854 surviving. Includes three fold-out maps, one of which is detached. CONDITION In a brown calf binding. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Internally generally firmly bound with generally clean pages throughout with minor browning due to age and some first and last few pages as usual. Bookplate to front pastedown. Printed for J. Dodsley, 1769. 8vo. xvi, 324 pp. 15 engraved plates (1 is unnumbered, facing p.22), folding table (p.36), index; some offsetting of plates, occasional foxing. Modern full speckled calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped red spine label, new endleaves. Bookplates of William Strong ["Fortis et Fidelis"] and Alfred M. Hellman, M.D. Fifth edition, with additions (see title) of this extremely popular work which went into a number of editions. The first edition was issued in 1742, and was full of material that the author "compiled, abstracted and copied everything available about the instrument, even Leeuwenhoek's plates found in the archives of the Society" [Ratcliff, p.80], this edition includes the discovery of the polyp. Even so, no one had studied Leeuwenhoek's instruments that were considered so valuable for his own pioneering and systematic research, until Baker took the task up some 20 years later - those instruments having been donated in 1723 on Leeuwenhoek's death. Arranged in two parts, the first dealing with various types of microscopes, their employment and adjustment, including the instruments of Wilson, Leeuwenhoek, Culpepper, Scarlett, Cuff, and Lieberkuhn. The second part is devoted to the examination of natural specimens established by and similar to Hooke's Micrographia. This work and the author's Employment of the Microscope, contain the bulk of his more important communications to the Royal Society. / Ratcliff offers more insight to the relationship Baker had with the various persons involved with instrument making, including Cuff and Lieberkuhn. On trouve dans ce traité des expériences sur l'électricité, le magnétisme et le vide. Il mit aussi en évidence la différence de résistance des matériaux en traction et en compression. ¶ D.S.B. Voet, J. E.
La Haye [The Hague], G. Bakhuysen, [1769-1804]. Two volumes in two. 4to (24.3 x 20.2 cm). Half titles and titles to the volumes, titles to to the text in each language; 555 pp. [(iv), 74; 114, 111; 82, (i), 86, 87]; 105 [55; 50] engraved and finely hand-coloured plates. Later uniform quarter mottled calf over yellow paper boards. Spines with five raised bands; compartments with gilt floral vignettes and two (red and black) labels with gilt title and volume number. Edges marbled red. So called second, expanded, edition of this beautifully and accurately illustrated, scientifically important work on beetles by the Dutch medical doctor, entomologist and poet Johannes Eusebius Voet (1706-1778). This edition has 105 plates, whereas a "first" had only 72. However, Horn and Schenkling state that there is no real first edition, only incompletely published copies of the parts edited by Voet before his death. There is also a title edition, or second state, with different title pages, dated 1806 and with naamlyst instead of naamlijst-which is more common-, and a later German edition. Voet, being an early modern entomologist-following the Linnaean binominal nomenclature and systematics-, introduced many new names that are still valid today. Several plates were made by the entomologist and son-in-law of August Johann Roesel von Rosenhof, Christian Friedrich Carl Kleemann (1735-1789)-see Junk, Rara. The work is entirely trilingual, with the whole descriptive text in Latin, French, and Dutch. The fine binding is later, but not modern. A wonderfully clean copy. Vauvilliers, J.F.
Paris, chez Desaint, 1769. One volume in 12mo; pp. VIII, 174, (2); contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with some gilding and red gilt lettering-piece, sprinkled edges, age-toning throughout, else clean, a good copy. Scarce first edition.J.-F. de Vauvilliers (1738-1801) was a famous hellenist and a professor at the Collège de France. He made contributions to the Éphémérides du Citoyen and was an adherent of the physiocratic school. In this work he argues against Mably's "Doutes proposées aux philosophes économistes". Mably pretended that the institution of landed property was neither right nor necessary for the prosperity of society, and he used Sparte as the example claiming that landed property had been absent in this ancient Greek state. Vauvilliers shows in his work that (without landed property) the prosperity of the lacedemonians was by far not as durable as Mably pretended.
In a brown calf binding. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Internally generally firmly bound with generally clean pages throughout with minor browning due to age and some first and last few pages as usual. Bookplate to front pastedown. Overall Condition: Good.
