        Elementa physicae. Tomus I (-VIII).

Naples, Donato Campi, 1767-1769. - 8vo. 8 vols. With engraved frontispiece and a total of 130 folding plates (several in the 6th volume loose). Contemp. marbled boards with giltstamped spine labels. All edges sprinkled in red. Final, most extensive edition of this compendium of 18th century science, compiled by the naturalist Gianmaria della Torre (1710-82), a Somascan Father and professor of physics in Naples. The first two volumes treat general physics, the others are dedicated to special fields, including thermometry, geophysics and minerals, metals, magnetism, earthquakes and volcanism, electricity, hydrophysics with rivers and ice, hydraulics as well as navigation; botany, animal life, the human body, anatomy; atmospheric phenomena and the perception of sound, light, colours, optics, etc. Of particular interest are the numerous engraved illustrations, showing not only instruments and experiments, but also maps of the Old and New World (Europe, Africa, Asia, America), the Torne River on Finland's Arctic Circle, the English Channel, crystals, volcanoes (with several views of Vesuvius and its latest eruptions), pumps and pumping stations, diving bells, etc. "Della Torre was a man of wide culture and of wide scientific curiosity. His studies led him into the history of philosophy, optics, and microscopy [.]; in addition, he observed and recorded eruptions of Vesuvius [. His] most important work, however, was as an encyclopedist. His two-volume work, 'Scienza della natura' (Naples, 1748-1749; [.] a considerably enlarged Neapolitan edition appeared in 1767-1780 as 'Elementa physicae'), anticipated the more famous 'Encyclopédie' the publication of which began in 1751. [. Della Torre's 'Elementa'] presents a complete and ordered picture of the state of scientific knowledge in its time. Although Della Torre's work is almost forgotten today, he was strongly influential in establishing the scientific climate of 18th-century Italy" (DSB). - Bindings rubbed and bumped; variously brownstained and waterstained; a few plates loose; unappealing old collector's stamps to title pages. Almost never encountered complete (as thus): no copy in auction records internationally; even libraries rarely hold more than four or six volumes, while the eighth and last volume is almost never present (nine-volume sets - such as those in the libraries of Benevento and Veroli - collect all the illustrations into a single volume of plates). DSB IV, 26. Poggendorff II, 1118 ("9 vols."). OCLC 883699282. Cf. Engelmann (Bibl. hist.-nat.) 198 (first ed.). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dabei kommt er zu Vorschlägen, deren technokratische Rationalität an Huxley’s Brave New World erinnern lassen. AN APPEAL TO THE WORLD, OR, A VINDICATION OF THE TOWN OF BOSTON FROM MANY FALSE AND MALICIOUS ASPERSIONS CONTAIN'D IN CERTAIN LETTERS AND MEMORIALS, WRITTEN BY GOVERNOR BERNARD, GENERAL GAGE, COMMODORE HOOD, THE COMMISSIONERS OF THE AMERICAN BOARD OF CUSTOMS, AND OTHERS, AND BY THEM RESPECTIVELY TRANSMITTED TO THE MINISTRY. PUBLISHED BY ORDER OF THE TOWN

Boston: Edes & Gill, 1769. First Edition. Hardcover. The title page has suffered insect damage causing the loss of about half of the right side affecting the text there as well as about 1/3 of the text on the verso. A facsimile of this leaf is included in a special pocket in the box. The next few leaves show some marginal damage but no text is affected. The remainder is clean. Unobtrusive library markings on three pages. Very Good. Recently re-sewn into marbled paper over boards, with a printed paper label on the front panel and fresh endpapers, and enclosed in a custom clamshell box with a leather spine lettering piece. Adams 62A, Evans 11133, Heartman 509 ("certainly one of the most important pre-revolutionary pamphlets"), Sabin 6478. For several years there had been rising enmity between the Massachusetts Assembly and the appointed Governor of Massachusetts, Francis Bernard, over a number of issues. Eventually this led to serious unrest, the unwelcome presence of British troops, and the organization of the Sons of Liberty. Then a series of inflammatory letters were made public from Governor Bernard and others to the Earl of Hillsborough who had recently been named Secretary of State for the Colonies. The members of the Assembly, who felt they had been "traduced and vilified," appointed a committee to reply to the letters, resulting in this response.

T., leicht fleckig, angestaubt, leichte Gbrsp. Veduta di S. Pier d'Arena (ripetuto in francese)

Genova 1769 - Incisione in rame, mm 510x1490, firmata in basso "Gius.

"Sage's dubious qualifications as a chemist were soon evident. In his Examen chymique and his more successful Elemens de minéralogie docimastique (1772), Sage had claimed that a white lead ore found at the famous mine of Poullaouen in Brittany was a compound of lead and marine acid (hydrochloric acid), even asserting in the latter book the ore contained twenty percent by weight of marine acide. Late in 1772 a master apothecary of Paris, one Laborie, reported to the Academy of sciences an analysis of this ore which controverted Sage's results : accordingly, a commitee composed of the other chemists in the Academy carried out experiments in Baumé's laboratory to decide between the contestants. They concluded unanimously that the ore contained no trace of marine acid. It is perhaps significant that while both laborie and Sage were invited to observe the experiments, only Laborie accepted the invitation."

RELATION HISTORIQUE DE L'EXPEDITION, CONTRE LES INDIENS DE L'OHIO EN MDCCLXIV. COMMANDEE PAR LE CHEVALIER HENRY BOUQUET...CONTENANT SES TRANSACTIONS AVEC LES INDIENS, RELATIVEMENT A LA DELIVRANCE DES PRISONNIERS

Amsterdam, 1769. Full tree calf, gilt spine extra, ruled in gilt on boards. Minor wear to edges and joints. Overall, an unusually bright copy, with clean maps and plates, very good. This is the French translation, after the first edition printed in Philadelphia in 1765, and includes a biography of Bouquet (Smith prepared the book from Boquet's notes). Bouquet's expedition to relieve Ft. Pitt showed British strength in the Ohio country in the wake of the close of the French and Indian War and brought an end to the Pontiac War. The Indians were soundly defeated at the battle of Bushy-Run and treated for peace, releasing captives taken in the previous years. Smith describes the campaign, gives an account of the country, tells of Indian warfare and how to fight against them. "A translation of Smith's 'Historical Account,' taken from the London, 1766 edition....The maps and plates are re-engraved from the London edition of 1766, the two parts of the map appearing separately....The preface includes a biographical sketch of Bouquet by Dumas" - Sabin. "Originally ascribed to Thomas Hutchins, who accompanied this expedition and executed the two plans; but that the book was prepared by Smith, from Bouquet's notes, has been established. This campaign gave Pontiac's conspiracy its death-blow" - Howes.

LETTERS TO THE MINISTRY, FROM GOVERNOR BERNARD, GENERAL GAGE, AND COMMODORE HOOD, AND ALSO, MEMORIALS TO THE LORDS OF THE TREASURY, FROM THE COMMISSIONERS OF THE CUSTOMS. WITH SUNDRY LETTERS AND PAPERS ANNEXED TO THE SAID MEMORIALS

Boston, 1769. Original gathered sheets, untrimmed and stitched as issued. Light staining to titlepage, slight age-toning to text. Very good. In a folding cloth clamshell box, stamped in gilt. An important tract on the causes of the American Revolution. This pamphlet was one of the first major "leaks" in American history. Bernard was governor of Massachusetts during the Stamp Act Crisis and was not well liked by the colonists. He was replaced as governor by Thomas Hutchinson in 1769, after being burned in effigy. He had made his feelings clear to various officials in London, while expressing strong views on how to stamp out dissent in Boston. Copies of the papers were obtained by parties (still unknown), who published them. Wikileaks had nothing on this; a firestorm of protests followed, and the resulting ill-feeling only added to the growing anger of the colonials. "On the turbulent state of affairs in Boston resulting from the Stamp Act" - Howes.

COPIES OF LETTERS FROM GOVERNOR BERNARD, &c. TO THE EARL OF HILLSBOROUGH [caption title]

[Boston, 1769. Quarto. Stitched as issued. Some light wear and soiling; old institutional ink stamp of the American Antiquarian Society, releasing it as a duplicate in 1921, on the first page. Very good. Untrimmed and unopened. In a half roan and cloth folder. These letters were written by Massachusetts colonial governor Francis Bernard to Lord Hillsborough, Secretary of State for the Colonies, complaining about the state of affairs in Massachusetts and about various colonists. Bernard, who was governor in the 1760s, writes primarily about the quartering of troops in Boston, which was much opposed by the citizens and the Council. There is also a letter from Gen. Thomas Gage. The correspondence was leaked by parties still unknown, and its publication raised a firestorm of criticism which led to Bernard's resignation. Bernard was replaced as governor by Thomas Hutchinson in 1769, after being burned in effigy. The letters arrived back in Boston in April 1769. Three editions - one a four-page folio edition, the present sixteen-page octavo edition, and a twenty-eight-page edition evidently issued to accompany the publication of further letters - were issued surreptitiously before their official publication by the order of the House of Representatives. Adams supposes that Edes & Gill, the official printers, may have issued the first two before the official publication, shortly after their arrival in Boston. This is the octavo version. ESTC locates ten copies.

(4), 376, (2) pages ; V. (4), 320 pages ; VI. (4), 375, (1) ; VII. (4), CIII-CXVIII, 413, (1) pages ; VIII. (4), 276, (6) pages ; IX. Christophorus Jacobus Trew

[Nuremberg], 1769. Mezzotint, on laid paper. Some light marginal spotting and surface soiling. An important mezzotint portrait by and after Johann Jakob Haid, of the author of one of the greatest of all botanical books. Johann Jakob Haid came from a German family of artists and printmakers. Haid worked initially with the animal painter Johann Elias Ridinger, but he soon went on to found a well-known publishing house in Augsburg. This portrait is from a series which pictured all those most closely involved in the publication of Trew's Plantae Selectae , and was originally bound into that great botanical work. Dr. Trew (1695-1769) was a Nuremberg physician, scholar, botanist and collector whose greatest contribution to the worlds of art and botany was his patronage of Georg Ehret and publication of Plantae Selectae and Hortus Nitidissimus. All of Plantae Selectae and much of Hortus ... are engravings after drawings by Ehret.

Andreas B. Kilcher. Das Orakel der Vernunft: Poetik und Politik des satiirischen Schreibens in Marquis d’Argens Kabbalistischen Briefen (S. 179-202). In: Der Marquis d’Argens. Hg. von Hans-Ulrich Seifert und Jean-Loup Seban. Wiesbaden 2004. S. 9). - Einbände teils wurmspurig, etwas beschabt und bestoßen, innen sauberes und gutes Exemplar. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Description of East Florida, with a Journal, kept by John Bartram of Philadelphia, botanist to His Majesty for the Floridas; upon a journey from St. Augustine up the river St. John's, as far as the lakes

London: Sold by W. Nicol ... and T. Jefferys, 1769. Quarto. (10 x 7 1/2 inches). 1 large engraved folding map, 2 engraved folding plans. (Short repaired tear to first map, neatly mended corner folds in first half). Half speckled calf over marbled paper-covered boards (rebacked to style) The third and by far the best edition of one of the most important 18th-century works on Florida, with significant additions and fine maps not found in the previous editions. One of only two published works by famed American botanist John Bartram. Great Britain took possession of Florida in the peace settlement of the French and Indian War in 1763, opening the region to exploration and development by the English. In the winter of 1765-66, promoter William Stork and naturalist John Bartram explored the eastern part of Florida, up the St. Johns River near present day Jacksonville. "The celebrated botanist's journal complements Stork's promotional account, and both are among the most important sources for the history of East Florida" (Streeter). Stork describes the importance of East Florida to Great Britain, especially regarding commerce and relations with the Spanish settlements. Bartram's journal is prefaced by an 8pp. "catalogue of plants that may be useful in America" [i.e. in Florida] compiled for Stork by John Ellis. The journal itself is delightful: the daily thoughts and observations of probably the greatest 18th-century American naturalist. It runs from 19th December 1765 to February 12th 1766 and includes details of the places visited and the people encountered, all interspersed with notes on the climate, the terrain, and of course the indigenous animals and plants. This edition, the rarest of the three published, is noted for the plans of St. Augustine and the Bay of Espiritu Santo and a large map of the region, all by Thomas Jefferys. The map, titled 'East Florida from Surveys made since the last Peace', depicts the major cities and waterways of Florida and is particularly notable for showing the overland route from St. Augustine to St. Mark of Apalache. The map depicts the peninsula as far north as Savannah and as far west as Pensacola. A lovely copy of one of the most important 18th-century works on Florida, significant for its contributions to travel literature, natural history, and cartography.         THE AMERICAN TRAVELLER: OR, OBSERVATIONS ON THE PRESENT STATE, CULTURE AND COMMERCE OF THE BRITISH COLONIES IN AMERICA, AND THE FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS OF WHICH THEY ARE CAPABLE

London, 1769. Quarto. 20th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Hinges and corners rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Minor foxing and soiling. Contemporary notation on plate. Very good. Cluny details the commerce and produce of the colonies in a series of letters to his patron. "In 23 letters Cluny describes the economic condition of the various colonies in America. He demonstrates the potentialities of the Hudson Bay trade and its restraint by the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly, the importance of newly conquered Canada, the increasing estrangement of the English colonies southward and their economic value to Great Britain" - TPL. He expounds on each section of the American colonies, commenting on the agriculture and goods produced in each, including tobacco, rice, indigo, and silk from the South. The map (here in facsimile) is entitled, "A Map of North and South America, with Part of Europe, Asia & Africa. By the American Traveller." It shows the whole of the known world, with the Americas at its center. The frontispiece shows Cluny leading a party of men on snowshoe, accompanied by a dog sled. A contemporary hand has written beneath the image: "Alexander Clunie with his body guard of Indians travelling thro' the wilderness of America in 1744 & 5.
