Additional Articles to the Specimen of an Etimological Vocabulary; Or, Essay, by Means of the Analitic Method, to Retrieve the Antient Celtic. by the Author of a Pamphlet, Entitled, the Way to Things by Words, and to Words by Things

London: Printed for Lockyer Davis. 1769. First Edition. Hardcover. Recent quarter calf over marbled boards with five raised bands on spine and contrasing spine label bearing gilt titles, internally clean and bright, half title before main body of text and final advertisment leaf at rear. (ESTC T4130) , John Cleland (1710-1789) is best known for his erotic novel "Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure". Cleland claimed to have written most of it while living in Bombay, where he was working for the East India Company, and that he'd written it to prove to a colleague that it was possible to write about a prostitute without using vulgar language. However the work was not completed until 1748, at which time Cleland was in prison for non-payment of debts. The book seems to have solved Clelands financial problems but did lead to his prosecution for the production of an obscene work. He went on to write a number of other novels, several plays (which were never produced) and a series of linguistic treatises, of which this is the third. In them he explored the celtic roots of English words, suggested links between Welsh and Hebrew, with the implication of the later being derived from the former, and plagiarized an account of Sanskrit by an earlier author. Clelands linguistic theories lack basis in fact and reflect the author's biases and idiosyncracies. , 8vo 8" - 9" tall, [ii] iii-xvii [iii] 46 [4] pp .

He showed great insight by pointing out the need for the measure of electric resistance, and proposed a method for measuring what is now called 'impedance,' which at the time was not distinguished from resistance (Phil. Trans. 1769, p. 63). He also investigated the 'lateral explosion' produced in the discharge of a Leyden jar, and showed that it is of an oscillatory nature, thus anticipating in part more recent discoveries on this subject, especially those of Oliver Lodge.." - DNB.         Daime Fauve

A detailed hand colored lithograph by Frederic Cuvier (1769-1832) & Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) from their sweeping book "Histoire Naturelle des Mammiferes, avec les figures originales." that was published in Paris in 1824-42. Overall this print measures 12? x 18?. This rare publication of mammals was originally published in 72 parts (to be bound in seven volumes) under the auspices of the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris. The animals were drawn from life mainly at the zoo Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The majority of the descriptions were by Cuvier, with Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire editing the work and providing occasional articles (indicating by his initials at the end of each article). The two final parts were edited and seen through the press by Cuvier?s son. A quarto edit was started in 1826, but ceased publication (with the 13th part) in July 1833. These are among some of the most exquisitely rendered images of animals ever published. Cuvier has successfully brought each animal to life by his exceptional talent for detail without forgetting the characteristics that give them personality. We will not be knowingly undersold on this work of art. Overall this print is in fair condition with some staining throughout

Amsterdam: Jan Christian Sepp, [1769]-1771-[1774]. Folio. (20 2/3 x 14 2/5 inches). 3 mezzotint portraits of Trew, G.D. Ehret and J.J. Haid, 100 hand- coloured engraved plates by Johann Jacob Haid and Johann Elias Haid after Georg Dionysius Ehret, each with the first word of the caption heightened in gold. Contemporary Dutch mottled calf gilt, covers with central panel surrounded by gilt roll-tool border of stylized foliage. Modern tan cloth box, tan morocco lettering piece. An excellent copy of the first Dutch edition of Trew's celebrated Plantae Selectae - one of the greatest eighteenth century botanical books, with 100 plates after paintings by Georg Dionysius Ehret. Of the work, Linnaeus would write to Trew: "The miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants, Edwards' work of birds and Roesel's of insects, nothing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future." Christoph Trew, a physician and amateur botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look" (Hunt). He was born in Heidelberg in 1710 and originally worked as a gardener, practicing drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl who had commissioned him to copy plates in van Rheede tot Draakestein's Hortus indicus malabaricus (1678-1693); it was during this period that Trew met Ehret. Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret throughout his life, and by 1742 the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe, "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them, which with other pieces executed by local artists, should later on… constitute an appendicem to Weinmann's publication." Meanwhile, Ehret had moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until in 1748; Johann Jacob Haid from Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings. The first part was published in 1750, with the six subsequent parts appearing before Trew's death 1769. With the help of Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf, the work was completed in 1773. The present edition was begun at about the time of Trew's death. Employing the same plates as had been used in the first edition, the Dutch publisher Jan Christian Sepp, who specialized in the publication of deluxe natural history books and had them very carefully coloured (the higher quality of the hand-colouring of this edition is self-evident - and arranged for Pereboom to translate the text.       AMSTERDAM: MARC-MICHEL REY, 1769 2 volumes complete bound in one."In this work, Bonnet advocates the view that the female body carries all future generations in miniature form. He believed that these so-called Homunculi would survive even the most severe catastrophes, like the Flood." (courtesy of whonamedit). Bonnet was the first naturalist to propose the theory of parthenogenesis in this work which is claimed to be rare. 1769 was the year of publication of the first edition of this work, but I do not know which publisher issued the true first - this print was in Amsterdam but another edition appeared in the same year in Geneva. Contents very bright and clean, original full leather binding in poor condition - weak hinges, chewed edges, but worth repairing as it is gilt tooled with raised bands.

A geneve: Chez Claude Philibert et Barthelemi Chirol, 1769. relié. 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (11,5x20cm).

Amsterdam - Marc-Michel Rey, 1769 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of Charles Bonnet's important philosophical work. Four volumes bound in two; complete. In French. Charles Bonnet (March 13, 1720 May 20, 1793), Swiss naturalist and philosophical writer, was born at Geneva, of a French family driven into Switzerland by the religious persecution in the 16th century. In this work, Bonnet argued that females carry within them all future generations in a miniature form. He believed these miniature beings, sometimes called hormonal, would be able to survive even great cataclysms such as the biblical Flood; he predicted, moreover, that these catastrophes brought about evolutionary change, and that after the next disaster, men would become angels, mammals would gain intelligence, and so on. Condition: In roan bindings. Externally, generally smart with slight shelfwear, mainly to corners and to head of spine. Internally, firmly bound with a couple of small chips to the first and last few pages of the second volume. Generally bright and clean but with the odd spot and previous owner's ink inscriptions to the front and rear of both volumes. Overall: VERY GOOD.

A Amsterdam: S.n., 1769. relié. In 8 (13x19,5cm). - S.n., A Amsterdam _1769, In 8 (13x19,5cm), xxviij, 369pp., relié.

2 Theile (with the title to the second Part:3rd Fasc. which reads:) Botanisch=Oeconomische Beschreibung der Gräser).

Leipzig, Siegfried Lebrecht Crusius, 1769-79. Folio. Bound in one contemp. hcalf, 6 raised bands, gilt. Spineends professionally repaired. Part of title-label missing. Corners renewed. Large engraved title-vignette. (14),154;(2),88 pp., 2 half-page engraved vignettes. and 40 large folded (3/2-page) engraved plates, all finely handcoloured. Some fingermarks at lower right corners of the first leaves. A few scattered brownspots. Printed on good paper. A fourth part of volume 2 came out as late as 1810, having 14 plates and it is sometimes called volume 3. It is not present here.. Scarce first edition of Schreber's classic work on grasses, which became of importance due to its very elaborate explanations of all aspects of the numerous grasses mentioned and depicted in the 40 plates, which are considered very well executed, both in regard to drawing, engraving, and colouring. Schreber (1739-1810) was a German physician and natural scientist. He became famous for his diverse knowledge and for his scientific works within botany and zoology. He studied medicine and natural science in Uppsala, Sweden, where he became doctor of medicine and made the acquaintance of Carl von Linné, whom he learned a lot from. In 1787 he became a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences. In Germany he became professor of medicine, botany, natural history, and pharmacology at Erlangen, director of Erlangen botanical garden, and president of the Leopoldina. His work on grasses was considered fairly important, especially due to its very elaborate explanations of all parts of the particular grasses, its use, conditions, etc. etc. "Dr. Schreber, a pupil of the great Linnæus, and a son to one of the best writers on husbandry in Germany, is publishing in numbers a work on grasses: his plan we will communicate to the reader, as it bids fair to obviate the greater part of the enumerated difficulties, and greatly to promote the study of this useful branch of botany and husbandry. In an introductory discourse, Dr. Schreber describes all the different parts observable in grasses, their flowers and their fructification; so that this part may be considered as a "philosophia Agrostographia". He next observes the points which must be attended to in a good description of grass; and, lastly, he shews the extensive utility of this branch of botany. The first volume contains twenty-seven descriptions, and as many excellent drawings of grasses, on twenty coloured plates..." (a contemporary review of the work, from Smollett's "The Critical Review, or, Annals of Literature, Vol. 32). Schreber was obviously inspired by Linné, as will be seen from the systematic account of the different grasses described and depicted in the present work, although he refused to group the grasses under certain genera. We are provided with the first name of each grass represented as well as with all its varieties, and names in almost all European languages, whereafter follows an extensive description of that particular grass, containing everything that is known about it - where it grows, under which circumstances, in which soil, its time of flowering, when it brings ripe seeds, etc. We are also provided with extensive information as to its cultivation, on the cattle which like it best, on the authors who have written about it, on the medicinal use of it, etc. "The plates are very well executed in regard to drawing, engraving, and colouring. The second part of this work, the first number of which is published, will soon appear. The defects of the work are, its high price, its too great diffuseness, and the too minute detail the author frequently enters into, the prospect that many years will pass away before the work can be finished, and that it is written in German, a language very little understood in this country." ("The Critical Review, or, Annals of Literature, Vol. 32).Some of the excellent original drawings of the "Beschreibung der Gräser" are still to be found at Erlangen, where Scheber also had his private collection of numerous grasses(See Stafleu & Covan, V : p. 328 and No 11.127) Nissen: 1807. - Pritzel: 8395. - Not in Hunt

First edition. In French. preface+427+446 p+conclusion. 2 vol. Contemporary full-leather binding. Marbeled endpapers. Gilt-Ornamented Spine. Raised bands. Coloured edge. Inclouding inscriptions and contemporary bookmark. Binding slightly torn, otherwise in very good condition.. Charles Bonnet, 1720-1793, was, together with Ballanche, the founder of the theory of " LA PALINGÉNSÉSIE ". Bonnet was influenced by Noél-Antoine Pluche and René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur. In order to explain the fossil findings of extinct species, Bonnet, in his work La Palingénésie philosophique, advocated the view that the earth is periodically struck by global disasters. In these disasters most organisms die and the survivors climb the scala natura to reach new heights. According to this, mankind, the peak of evolution, would develop into angels after the next disaster, when plants would become animals, animals would become intelligent beings, and minerals would become plants. This disaster theory to explain evolution strongly influenced Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) grandfather. This makes Charles Bonnet one of the first biologist to use the term evolution in a biological context. However, he was stuck in the preformation theory, believing that each female organism contains within its germ cells an infinite series of preformed individuals, leading to an immortality and immutability of species. In this work, Bonnets advocates the view that the female body carries all future generations in miniature form

Obetydligt solkigt pergamentbd med vinröd titeletikett som går över nästan hela ryggen (B. Middleton). Oskuren. Små fuktfläckar på titelbladet. Lite solk och enstaka små lagerfläckar ytterst i marginalerna. Liten fläck på s. 53. Fin inlaga.. Brooks 10.
