The patriot King displayed In the life and reign of Henry VIII King of England: from the time of his quarrel with the Pope, to his Death. By Edward Lewis, M. A. Rector of Waterstock and Emington, in Oxfordshire.

Edward and Charles Dilly, 1769 - Londres, Edward and Charles Dilly, 1769. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

hamisha humshey Torah Khamisha Khumshey Tora Pentateuch Five Books of Moses

Kashman ben Yosef Baruch, Amsterdam, Holland 1769 - 1, 140, 23 leaves. Also includes The Five Scrolls or The Five Megillot, Hamesh Megillot, which are parts of the Ketuvim ("Writings"), the third major section of the Tanakh (The Bible). The Five Scrolls are the Song of Songs, the Book of Ruth, the Book of Lamentations, Ecclesiastes and the Book of Esther. These five relatively short biblical books are grouped together in Jewish tradition. All five of these megillot ("scrolls") are traditionally read publicly in the synagogue over the course of the year in many Jewish communities. In common printed editions of the Tanakh they appear in the order that they are read in the synagogue on holidays (beginning with Passover). The Song of Songs (Hebrew: Shir ha-Shirim) is read publicly in some communities, especially by Ashkenazim, on the Sabbath of Passover. In most Eastern Jewish communities it is read publicly each week at the onset of the Shabbat (Sabbath). There is also a widespread custom to read it at the end of the Passover Seder. Italian Jews read it at the Maariv (Evening Prayer) of the first and second day of Passover. The Book of Ruth is read in some communities, especially by Ashkenazim, before the reading of the Torah on the morning of Shavuot. Others read it in the Tikkun at night, or not at all. The Book of Lamentations (Hebrew: Eikhah or Kinnot) is read on the Ninth of Av in all Jewish communities. Ecclesiastes (Hebrew: Kohelet) is read publicly in some communities, especially by Ashkenazim, on the Sabbath of Sukkot. In other communities it is not read at all. The Book of Esther is read in all Jewish communities on Purim. The public reading is done twice, on the evening of Purim and once again the next morning. When read in the synagogue, these five books are sung with cantillation. In most communities, Esther is the only book accompanied by blessings before and after. But certain communities adopted the custom of the Vilna Gaon to recite blessings before the other four megillot as well. As indicated above, however, only two of the megillot are traditionally read in all Jewish communities, Esther on Purim and Lamentations on the Ninth of Av. The practice of reading the other three books on the Three Pilgrimage Festivals is widespread but by no means universal. To read them is a venerable custom among Ashkenazim, but many Sephardic Jews do not associate the three books with the three festivals. The association is thus weaker also among Hasidic Jews who were influenced by Sephardic customs.

        O Uraguay Poema

Famous landmark of Brazilian literature, a splendid copy. 1769. Regia Officina Typografica. In 8vo (162 mm x 102 mm). 1 [blank] + 3 ff. + 102 + 1 ff. + 1 [blank]. Splendid contemporary red morocco gilt, spine flat, boards with intense tooling within double gilt fillets, centre and corner pieces, a bit soiled, just with minor traces of rubbing. A fine copy, in entirely genuine condition, wide margins, lightly foxed.First edition. O Uraguay is a considerable achievement of Brazilian literature. It is of political nature, arguing in favour of Pombal?s actions against the Jesuits following the 1750 Madrid Treaty between the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns, which transferred the Jesuit Reductions of Paraguay to Brazil; it "was a political poem defending Pombal's action against the Jesuit reductions. After the Minister fell from power all available copies were suppressed" (Borba de Moraes). Its rarity may be explained by ?despite it having been printed in 1036 copies- the fact that it was ordered supressed. (Correa do Lago).Basilio da Gama (1740 ? 1795) was a Brazilian-born poet and Jesuit. Following his father?s death, he was sent to Rio de Janeiro to study with the Society of Jesus. After the Jesuit?s expulsion from Brazil, he went to Europe, were he adopted the pseudonym Termindo Sipilio, under which he writes the present novel.Borba de Moraes, 338. Sabin, 26487.       E. and C. Dilly, London 1769 - Comes bound in contemporary polished calf with gilt lines and title block on spine. Front board and first fly present but detached. Probably a "first thus" or a reworking of a 1749 volume with a similar title by Sheridan, still a fairly scarce volume. Sheriden was the Dublin actor/writer and father of the much more famous Richard Sheridan. Sheridan's book is of course mostly concerned with the teaching of the skills of language and oratory. Interior with a small bit of random foxing but generally very clean. "From the Author" in an old hand on first fly. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Early 19th century oval Stradbroke bookplates.& & Second edition of the first two volumes and first edition of the last 3. This is the first complete translation into English of the early Roman comedies of Plautus.& & This project was begun by Thornton near the end of his life, an appropriately witty man whom Samuel Johnson found highly diverting. Thornton was inspired by the edition of the plays of Terence prepared by his friend George Coleman the elder. Two volumes appeared in 1767, just before Thornton's death; these contained 5 plays translated by Thornton himself, one by Coleman, and one by Richard Warner. In the end it was Warner, a literary scholar and botanist who undertook to complete the project; his final text, as represented here provides one of the most successful English translations from the Latin in the 18th century.& & ""Thornton's versions are held to be the best, being highly praised by Southey for their playfulness and ingenuity"" (DNB).       London : Newbery and Carnan, 1769 A very good set, complete in 10 volumes. It is profusely illustrated with copper plates of major landmarks and features described on the title pages as 'palaces, castles, cathedrals; the ruins of Roman and Saxon Buildings; and of Abbeys, Monasteries, and other Religious Houses, Besides a Variety of Cuts of Urns, Inscriptions, and other Antiquities.' In contemporary full leather bindings with raised bands to spine, red labels with gilt lettering to spine; gilt volume numbers; and gilt tooling on the side edges of the boards, only visible when the book is laid down on its side. With 240 copper plates as called for, and numerous engravings in the text. The contents are in superb and clean condition. There is some browning to pages opposite the plates because they are not tissue guarded. One volume only (7) has some very slight water damage to the top right corner of the last 14 pages. Volume 10 has a very small wormhole affecting the fep and first few leaves with minimal damage and no loss of text. There are very occasional annotations. All have an ink signature, possibly of Suzanne Roberts, 1854. Some have a worn bookplate of Richard Colchester. The bindings are sound but showing some wear - usually at the top or bottom of the spine; some particularly at the joints, and some rubbing at corners. The leather bindings are very clean and nicely coloured. We can provide a detailed account of each volume on request.

[viii], 394 pags.+ [12 grav. desd.] - 3.º vol. [iv], 212 pags.+[6 grav. desd.].
