Thomas Hutchinson
Thomas and John Fleet, Boston, MA, 1764. FIRST EDITION. [6], iv, 566 pp. Hardcover in contemporary cloth with red leather spine and gilt title label on spine. Age toning and minor foxing throughout the text. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the "tyrannical disposition" of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's "harpies." Hutchinson's History acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self-interested groups like the advocates of an inflated money supply he had battled in the 1740s. Though Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) got credit for the Albany Plan of colonial union in 1754, Hut … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Ferguson
printed for A. Millar, 1764. First edition, 4to, pp. vii, [1], 252, [4]; 23 folding engraved plates; bound with: A Supplement to Mr. Ferguson's Book of Lectures ... containing thirteen copper-plates, with descriptions, of the machinery which he has added to his apparatus, since that book was printed, London, A. Millar, 1767, pp. 40; 13 folding engraved plates; contemporary full calf, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; joints cracked, corners worn and peeling, boards scuffed; externally good; internally about fine. A talented artist, for many years he earned his living as a portraitist. In later years he was able to devote himself to science, delivering popular lectures on science, and designing instruments. He invented eight orreries, a tide-dial, a 'whirling table' for displaying the mode of central forces, the 'mechanical paradox' and various kinds of astronomical clocks, stellar and lunar rotulas, as well as his 'seasons illustrator' and the 'eclipsareon' of which he was very proud..." (Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechinaca, p. 114-5). "His models of the planetary system were classics of engineering design whose accuracy far surpassed anything previously available" (DSB). Charles Nicolas COCHIN
Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, some expert repairs at the back, otherwise in good condition. This plate is engraved by Cochin & Jacques Philippe Le Bas, after a painting by Joseph Vernet. Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 to paint fifteen views of the main ports of France, and given the exceptional title of "peintre des marines de sa majesté". He spent twelve years travelling around the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Channel coasts with his family and servants in tow. The country was at war with England at the time, and Loui … [Click Below for Full Description]

EON (de Beaumont, Chevalier) et F.J. CADART
Bayes, Thomas
London: L. Davis and C. Reymers, 1764. First edition. FIRST EDITION of Thomas Bayes's extremely influential work on the concept of "inverse probability", the basis of modern statistical inference.
. ''Bayes, a Nonconformist minister, published only two works during his lifetime: Divine Benefits (1731), a religious treatise; and Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions (1736), in which he responded to Bishop Berkeley's attack on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. For the latter work he was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1742. In 1763, two years after Bayes's death, Richard Price, a fellow Nonconformist minister, economist, and actuary to whom Bayes had bequeathed his papers, found Bayes's Essay and submitted it to the Royal Society for publication. The arguments in Bayes's paper were adopted by Laplace, who saw in them the basis for statistical inference; they were later challenged by George Boole in his Laws of Thought. "Bayes's Essay contains the first statement of Bayes's Theorem for calculating 'inverse probabilities', which forms the basis for methods of decision analysis, statistical learning machines, and Bayesian networks. Bayesian networks are complex diagrams that organise the body of knowledge in any given area by mapping out cause-and-effect relationships among key variables and encoding them with numbers that represent the extent to which one variable is likely to affect another. Programmed into computers, these systems can automatically generate optimal predictions or decisions even when key pieces of information are missing. Bayesian or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769) settled down in Nuremberg in 1749, after having been wandering about for many years as a soldier and a secretary, and started his valuable microscopical observations under the protection and direction of the famous Dr. C.J. Trew. The publication of the results, with the finely engraved and coloured plates by the successful Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, met with close attention and interest, and for years to come the "Mikroskopieren" was a fashionable pastime for many of the well-to-do classes. The work describes and illustrates a wide range of objects: parts of plants and insects, small shells, plancton, the crystallization of salts in solution etc. The author was the first to use the term 'infusoria'. Our copy does not have the supplement of 23 pages and 2 plates "Response... à quelques obiections et doutes... par le Baron de Gleichen" a supplement which is lacking in most copies and not listed by Nissen.//A fine uncut copy.//Graesse IV, 139; Brunet III, 919: "Ouvrage très estimé"; Nissen BBI, 1156.
