FIRST EDITION. A fine set of the rare abridged English translation of the medical papers in the Histoire et Mémoires of the Académie Royale des Sciences from 1699 to 1750. Thomas Hutchinson
Thomas and John Fleet, Boston, MA, 1764. FIRST EDITION. [6], iv, 566 pp. Hardcover in contemporary cloth with red leather spine and gilt title label on spine. Age toning and minor foxing throughout the text. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the "tyrannical disposition" of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's "harpies." Hutchinson's History acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self-interested groups like the advocates of an inflated money supply he had battled in the 1740s. Though Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) got credit for the Albany Plan of colonial union in 1754, Hut … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Legatura francese dell'Ottocento in mezzo marocchino rosso, piatti in carta marmorizzata, dorso a quattro nervi con fregi e titolo in oro, risguardi e tagli marmorizzati. [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarto. 20th-century polished calf, spine gilt, five raised bands, gilt morocco spine label. Mild shelf wear. Top portion of titlepage above title remargined, small abrasion beneath imprint, text somewhat toned, small ink stamp to one leaf, minor repairs to folding maps on verso, a few short splits along folds. Overall good plus. The second and best edition, after the first of 1761. The text, with additions by Jefferys, is based on Gerhard Müller's work regarding the Northeast Passage and represents the best geographical knowledge of the time. One of the large maps, "...Discoveries made by the Russians on the North West Coast of America," shows both Kamchatka and the Northwest Coast. The other, a large folding map of Canada, shows discoveries from Canada to the west of Hudson Bay and some points on the western coast. The two smaller maps (bound in as two sheets in this copy) show "parts of America, showing their Situation with respect to Japan" and Admiral de Fonte's discoveries, respectively. "Most important contemporary account of Bering's discoveries, by a scientist attached to his second expedition" - Howes. "This important book is indispensable for the history of discovery and explorations in the northern Pacific...and it represents the most extensive account in English of Bering's polar expedition and of the discovery of the Bering Strait and the western limits of North America.... This is the second English edition of Gerhard Friedrich Müller's … [Click Below for Full Description]
