s.e, 1764. In-8 p. (mm. 219x161), 3 opere in 1 vol., cartonato rustico coevo.

JEFFERYS, Thomas, editor
London: Printed for T. Jefferys, 1764. Some slight browning of paper, tear in two leaves expertly repaired.. Quarto, with four folding maps on three folding sheets; a very nice copy in old half maroon morocco gilt. The second and best edition of Jefferys's English translation, published the same year as the significantly shorter first: a 'most important contemporary account of Bering's discoveries, by a scientist attached to his second expedition' (Howes). The text, with additions by Jefferys, is based on Gerhard Müller's obscurely published account of Russian discoveries in eastern Asia and north America, which appeared in 1753 as volume three of his exhaustive study Sammlung Russischer Geschichte. This work, Müller's magnum opus, was published in St. Petersburg, where he was a lecturer at the Academy. Müller's publication contained the first full narrative of the Bering expedition, a 'most important contemporary account of Bering's discoveries, by a scientist attached to his second expedition' (Howes). The text has significant additions by Jefferys, and thus is not simply a translation of Müller's work. It represents the best contemporary geographical knowledge regarding the question of the Northeast Passage. Although the text was a vitally important addition to the information available in English, the work's glory are the four maps, in particular the first large map "Discoveries made by the Russians on the North West Coast of America", showing both Kamchatka and the Northwest coast. Whilst it closely follows the very scarce original (also by Müller and published by t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Augustae Vindelicorum [Augsburg]: Conradum Henricum Stage, 1764. Second Edition in Latin. This beautifully preserved and attractive Neoclassical binding is a fitting cover for a Latin edition of Fénelon's Homeric coming-of-age tale. Edwards of Halifax is credited with developing the process of acid staining calf by using stencils, a method known most notably to produce, as here, their so-called Etruscan calf bindings (after the Etruscan vase decoration they resembled). The process was also adopted by binders on the Continent, and became a fashionable choice for bindings in the late 19th century, when the present binding was surely produced. It is difficult to say whether this binding was done by the Edwards firm or by an imitator, but in any case, the quality of execution is very high. The popularity of Fénelon's account of the adventures of the son of Odysseus also spread, in this case beyond his native France, and it became a favorite of schoolboys far removed from the young Dauphin for whom it was originally composed. First printed in 1759, our Latin translation offered an opportunity for young men to practice reading that classical language. The engravings here were newly designed and executed for this edition by German painter and engraver Georg Sigmund Rösch (d. 1766).. 208 x 160 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/4"). 9 p.l., 262 pp.Translated from French into Latin by Joseph Claude Destouches. Second Edition in Latin. FRENCH ILLUSTRATED BOOKS). PEZAY, ALEXANDRE FRÉDÉRIC JACQUES DE MASSON, MARQUIS DE. and CLAUDE JOSEPH DORAT
Genve [i.e., Paris]: n.p., 1763; Sbastien Jorry, 1764; Paris: Sbastien Jorry. Genève [i.e., Paris]: n.p., 1763; Sébastien Jorry, 1764; Paris: Sébastien Jorry, 1764. FIRST EDITIONS of first two works. The graceful engravings of Rococo master Charles Eisen are the highlight of these four works of light and occasionally racy verse, written by two notoriously rakish dandies whose poems were so in sympathy with one another that there is often confusion as to which one is the author of a particular piece. For example, "Le Pot-pourri" is attributed to both men by the Bibliothèque Nationale. In any case, what all of the works here have in common is the invariably charming illustrations of Eisen. Cohen-de Ricci has special praise for the engravings in "Zélis" ("very beautiful") and "Pot-pourri" (a "charming volume very elegantly illustrated"). Bryan says that Eisen (1720-78), court painter to Louis XV and drawing master to Madame de Pompadour, had a hand in "almost all the important [illustrated] books published in France in his time." His "exquisite plates [are] engraved with a light point and with striking originality." He "took his inspirations direct from nature, but add[ed] something of the ideal, after the manner of Watteau and Boucher." A former musketeer, Dorat (1734-80) was known for his plays and airy verse, but the lavishness of his published works surpassed their profundity. Pezay (1741-77), a commoner who bestowed the title "Marquis" upon himself, was a courtier and libertine (like Dorat and Eisen) but he also had a serious side, as his scholarly books on maps and g … [Click Below for Full Description]

All entries are alphabetically ordered using Linnaean plant names and are followed by the common name in German, other nomenclature, a visual description and a specification of the parts used for medicine. The anonymous author writes in the preface that he had help from an experienced botanist, but curiously enough, while the descriptions are clearly carefully written, no mention is made of any medical qualities. BAYES, THOMAS
London: L. Davis and C. Reymers, 1764. First edition. FIRST EDITION of Thomas Bayes's extremely influential work on the concept of "inverse probability", the basis of modern statistical inference.
. ''Bayes, a Nonconformist minister, published only two works during his lifetime: Divine Benefits (1731), a religious treatise; and Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions (1736), in which he responded to Bishop Berkeley's attack on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. For the latter work he was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1742. In 1763, two years after Bayes's death, Richard Price, a fellow Nonconformist minister, economist, and actuary to whom Bayes had bequeathed his papers, found Bayes's Essay and submitted it to the Royal Society for publication. The arguments in Bayes's paper were adopted by Laplace, who saw in them the basis for statistical inference; they were later challenged by George Boole in his Laws of Thought. "Bayes's Essay contains the first statement of Bayes's Theorem for calculating 'inverse probabilities', which forms the basis for methods of decision analysis, statistical learning machines, and Bayesian networks. Bayesian networks are complex diagrams that organise the body of knowledge in any given area by mapping out cause-and-effect relationships among key variables and encoding them with numbers that represent the extent to which one variable is likely to affect another. Programmed into computers, these systems can automatically generate optimal predictions or decisions even when key pieces of information are missing. Bayesian or … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROUSSIER, Pierre-Joseph 1716 or 1717-1792
Paris: Bailleux, 1764. A slightly revised edition, published in the same year as the first. Scarce. Cortot, p. 173. Gregory-Bartlett ,p. 239. RISM BVI, p. 739."As a proponent of Rameau's theories, his goal was to reduce fundamental bass rules to a rigorous system that avoided speculative propositions. His Traité des accords is a compendium of chords and laws: thoroughbass chords are methodically described, related to three basic fundamental chords, and then labelled by a letter-plus-number notational system that indicates a chord's root and hierarchy in the scale. Roussier diverged from Rameau on the issue of double emploi. He insisted that a subdominant chord with added 6th was distinctly different from a minor 7th chord on the second scale degree. He extended Rameau's principles of inversion, supposition and substitution to invent new chords and to relate augmented 6th chords to a dominant function. He also advocated Pythagorean tuning."
