The sale catalogue (6752 lots) of the library of the Collége (or Lycée) Louis-le-Grand at Paris, one of the most important of all Jesuit libraries, known for its rarities and first editions of the classics. The chief donors to the library were Pierre Pithou (1539-96); the poet Philippe Desportes (1546-1606); Nicolas Fouquet (1615-80), superintendent of finance under Louis XIV; and Achille Harlay IV. The sale of this splendid library was caused by the expulsion of the Jesuits from France in the early 1760s. Pretty copy and scarce; priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Contemporary engraved armorial bookplate of Alexandre Michel Pomereu, "conseiller du Roy." Leather bound. 273pp. Sextodecimo [16.5 cm] in full mottled brown calf with raised spine bands, gilt-tooled spine, and gilt-stamped maroon morocco spine label, boards ruled in brown. Marbled endpapers, all edges red. Rubbing and wear to boards, corners exposed, chipping to spine at tips, 1.5" crack to front joint at foot; hinges cracked (but holding), inscription on front free endpaper blotted out with modern black; a few dog-ears and occasional light foxing throughout. Engraved frontispiece and 4 folding plates. Known by his ecclesiastical title, l'Abbé Nollet was a pioneering physicist popular with the aristocracy. He was especially interested in electricity, and twice publicly demonstrated the speed of its current by having a large number of men form a ring that was then closed with a Leyden jar, causing them all to leap in unison. He did this first with soldiers, then with monks.

Legatura coeva in piena pelle con dorso e nervi (rifatto recentemente) e titoli in oro su tassello originale. Sguardie marmorizzate. Ottimo stato di conservazione, marginoso e fresco. Manca la tavola n. 18 raffigurante un bassorilievo di Villa Giustiniani. Le tavole raffigurano alcune vedute, antichità e due riguardano la situazione agricola del bolognese ed il modo di coltivare la vite in Lombardia. Esemplare cui sono state aggiunte (oltre alle tavole citate) una carta geografica ripiegate a colori dell'Italia centro-settentrionale, e altre 8 tavole provenienti da un opera dello stesso periodo (Lalande?). Seconda edizione (la prima apparve nel 1730) di questo classico viaggio che segue le orme del Grand Tour settecentesco. Cfr. l'enigmatica descrizione che ci offre Cicognara (4153): "Pochissimo noto è in Italia questo viaggio pubblicato con 40 tavole in rame...
