Self Published, Oaxaca, 1764. 35 gatherings with approximately fourteen folded folio leaves (12 1/4"" x 10") in each gathering which are now stored in an archival protective sleeve. All hand written generally on recto and verso, but in many different hands with seals stamped or embossed to documents. Now housed in a custom designed folio enclosure (15" x 12 1/2") along with the original velum. This work details the agricultural, household and commercial operations, as well as the daily life, at the Hacienda. The manuscript includes business records, legal documents and a variety of other historical material. Originally housed in a vellum binding which has become loose, but enclosed within the custom enclosure for the document. This gives a glimpse of Oaxaca life at the end of New Spain's colonial reign in Mexico. Condition: Worming throughout, sometimes heavily. The terminal pages have heavy chipping and wear at extremities affecting text, some pages damp-stained. Robert Dossie (1717-1777) was a rigourous advocate for the advantages of improved public knowledge. With the publication of this work he provided information and instruction to the reader in a multitude of trades, many never before disclosed outside there trades. As a resource, it was well regarded by eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century artisans and became the standard work for practical techniques of that era.

Winterschmidt, 1764-66-68-75. The finest copy I have seen in many years, finely bound in citron morocco, of the first edition in French of this famous and beautifully illustrated microscopical work. Ledermüller (1719-69), a polymath, displayed a discerning interest in the art and science of natural history and especially in the newer science of microscopy, which made it possible to study the characteristics of a great variety of specimens. The fine engravings, made by Winterschmidt from the author's drawings and beautifully hand-colored, depict a wide range of objects under magnification including insects, plants, fungi, minerals, cochineal, mites, hydra, mollusks, etc. Several microscopes and apparatus are also illustrated. A very fine and handsome set. This set has the Traité phisique et microscopique de l'Asbeste (1775) which Brunet says "manque souvent." Winckelmann (1717-1768) gilt sowohl als Begründer der klassischen Archäologie, als auch der modernen, stilgeschichtlich orientierten Kunstgeschichte. Sein hier vorliegendes, wissenschaftsgeschichtlich revolutionäres Hauptwerk brach mit der Tradition, Kunstgeschichte vornehmlich als Künstlergeschichte aufzufassen und machte ihn umgehend zu einer Gestalt von europäischem Rang. Recently succeeding to his father's (William Adam) architectural practice, along with his brothers John and James, Robert set off on a Grand Tour to increase his understanding of the field and demonstrate his sensibility. He travelled to Dalmatia in July 1757 with his manservant Donald, his teacher Charles-Louis Clérisseau (largely responsible for the drawings), and two draftsmen. After a stay of a bit more than five weeks, he began his return trip to London, where he persuaded his cousin William Robertson to write the dedication and the preface for the book, while Clérisseau arranged for the engraving of his drawings in Venice. The resulting publication provides an elaborate description of a rare private residence of the Imperial period. Of this publication Edward Gibbon remarked (The Decline and Fall, chap. 12): "There is reason to suspect that the elegance of his designs and engravings has somewhat flattered the objects which it was their purpose to represent." A suite of twelve prints illustrating scenes in the pantomime "Der Schwätzer der Leichtgläubige", a carnival entertainment performed in the small auditorium (Aula minor) of Salzburg University, on 27 February 1764. The pantomime was enacted during an intermission of the tragedy "Pietas in patriam" and is dedicated by its author, Florian Reichssiegel, to Prince-Archbishop Siegmund Christoph von Schrattenbach. The principal characters are the clowns Harlequin, Hanswurst, and Pierrot; a synopsis of the action (in Latin and German) appears beneath each print. The scenes were drawn by the Salzburg stage designer Matthias Siller (1710-1790) for the Augsburg printmakers Philip Andreas Degmair (1711-1783) and Johann Philip Haid (1730-1806). The title and prints 2, 8, [10] are mezzotints; prints 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12 are line engravings. Il tutto nitidamente inciso in rame. Leg. coeva in perg. rigida con titoli in oro su tassello. Una firma di possesso antica al verso dell'occhietto: Ex libris Johannis Bergogelli ed un nunerino impresso e ripetuto alcune volte nel volume.Bell'esemplare, fresco, ad ampi margini e stampato su carta vergata. Edizione originale italiana, elegantissima di quest'opera considerata come uno dei monumenti della poesia inglese del '700. Particolarmente apprezzabile fu l'opera di traduzione del parmense Angelo Mazzza per il quale Gherardini (autore delle giunte al Vocabolario) ebbe parole di grande elogio, Cfr. Gamba 2612. Lo stampatore, curiosamente anonimo, è il Comino. Cfr. Federici. Non comune, soprattutto in tale stato di conservazione.

In Venezia, per Giambattista Pasquali, 1764. Cm. 17, pp. (4) xxvi, 243 (1). Bella antiporta e frontespizio finemente incisi in rame. Legatura coeva in cart. ricoperto da carta decorata del tempo con titoli ms. al dorso. Minime mancanza di carta decorata alla legatura, ma cart. perfettamente integro, quaderni leggermente allentati, peraltro esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1709-1785), pensatore politico francese, fratello del Condillac, va annoverato tra le principali figure della politica estera del Settecento francese. Nelle sue opere sviluppò concetti politici che a molti osservatori parvero come principi anticipatori delle idee rivoluzionarie, in realtà la visione sociale di Mably era suggerita più da istanze morali che da una visione complessiva di risistemazione socio-economica. Ebbe comunque modo di schierarsi con decisione contro il dispotismo illuminato dei fisiocrati caldeggiando lo sviluppo di una monarchia sorretta da istituzioni repubblicane. Quest'opera edita per la prima volta in Francia nel 1763 si basa, secondo quanto sostiene Mably, sulla scoperta di un manoscritto antico a Montecassino. Cfr. Melzi, 290, Barbier, 1560; Iccu. Première et unique édition. Ecrit majeur et "testamentaire" de celui qui joua un rôle prépondérant dans la rénovation de la typographie française du XVIIIe siècle. L'ouvrage est orné de deux frontispices gravés sur cuivre par Fessard d'après De Sève pour l'un et Gravelot pour l'autre. Le premier volume comporte 16 planches hors texte gravées sur cuivre et repliées à la fin. Le second est illustré de 250 pages de spécimens, 101 alphabets anciens et modernes (hébreux, syriaques, arabes, coptes, arméniens, éthiopiens, romains ou grecs) et près de 400 modèles de vignettes qui ont tant contribué à la réputation de ses impressions. Une des plus belles réussites typographique du XVIIIe siècle. Pierre-Simon Fournier (1712-1768), dit Fournier le Jeune, était le fils du directeur de la fonderie des Le Bé, reprise après sa mort par son fils Jean-Pierre. Genève Cramer 1764 12 in-16Genève, Cramer, 1764, 12 volumes in-12, veau fauve, dos fleuronnés sans nerfs, pièces en maroquin rouge, filet sur les coupes, tranches marbrées (reliure de l'époque). Premier tirage. Frontispice par Pierre, gravé par Watelet, représentant le génie couronnant le buste de Corneille et 34 jolies figures par Gravelot, gravées par Baquoy, Flipart, Lemire, etc... Belle édition que Voltaire fit imprimer par souscription chez les frères Cramer à Genève, en l'accompagnant de commentaire, afin de doter une descendante du grand Corneille, qu'il avait recueillie. Toute l'Europe y prit part. Contient à la fin du Tome II, un supplément de 9 pages : Réponse de l'auteur des commentaires à un Académicien et 1 feuille-avis au relieur. Le 12ème volume contient bien la liste des souscripteurs (47 pages) et de Voltaire : Macare et Thélème, Allégorie (8 pages). Ce conte allégorique est précédé d'une "lettre de l'auteur à M. le D.D.L.V. (duc de La Vallière) en lui envoyant la pièce suivante" ; cette lettre est datée du 6 février 1764 (cf Bengesco, T.Ier, N°650, p.183 ; Cohen 255). Toutes ces pièces se trouvent rarement. Agréable reliure de l'époque présentant de menues restaurations. Coiffes fragiles, infimes trous de vers, très légères taches à la reliure et quelques rousseurs internes.
