Rousseau Jean Jacques
[Click Below for Full Description]

Winckelman, Jacoba Petronella
- 8?: *4 A-V8.Pagination: [8] + 312 + [8] pp. Title page printed in black and red type. Parchment binding, with the coat of arms of Middelburg gilt stamped on both the front and the back board. Remains of silk straps. Pasted inside is an ex-libris of Van der Veen-Hondius. Collection of poems by Jacoba Petronella Winckelman (Vlissingen 1696 - Middelburg 1761), who came from a very religious family and lived a reformed, pious life. By attending conventicles during which she shared religious ideas, she developed her literary talent. Jacoba Petronella died in 1761 at the age of 64, and most of her works were published after her death. In 1763, her niece Maria Elizabeth Winckelman published a first collection of poems, named 'Stichtelyke gedichten', in which she added an introductional biography of her aunt's life. A year later, this collection followed. It also includes a foreword by Maria Elizabeth, in which she explains that this book includes poems of the same nature as the previous publication, meaning devotional poetry aimed at bettering humanity. It also features blessings and mourning poems because these were believed to serve the same purpose. In 1769, these two volumes were republished as a bundle. L3908

Ownership markings of Jonathan Sayward Barrell, merchant in York, Maine, as well as James Lloyd of Massachusetts, who signed the front free endpaper of first volume in 1765. Front board of of first volume detached, rear board of first volume nearly detached, one signature clipped from margin in Volume II, lacking front free endpaper in second volume. Remains quite good, complete, with bright contents. Genealogical notes of the Lloyd family on rear endpapers of first volume. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dalby, Joseph
Birmingham: John Baskerville, for the Author, 1764. Rare Medical Book Printed by Baskerville [Baskerville, John (1706-75).] Dalby, Joseph (d. 1784). The virtues of cinnabar and musk, against the bite of a mad dog . . . 4to. [8], 3-56pp. (leaf B1 not present as in all copies). Birmingham: John Baskerville, for the author, 1764. 256 x 203 mm. Full morocco, gilt-ruled, in antique style. Marginal repairs to title and one or two other leaves, not affecting text, but very good. Errata corrected in an early hand. First Edition, second state, with the title dated 1764. "The title-page is also found in an earlier state, with line 7 set in English instead of Great Primer and ending with a full point instead of a colon, and with the last line reading: M DCC LXII. Both states are printed from the same setting of type (with these exceptions), and neither is found as a cancel" (Gaskell). Dalby's short work on the treatment of hydrophobia is the first of only two medical books printed by Baskerville, the other being William Hunter's Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus (1774). Unlike the Gravid Uterus, Dalby's work is extremely rare on the market, with no auction records over the past 25 years; this is the first copy we have seen in over 40 years of trading. The work was printed for the author and sold by subscription. The subscribers' list (leaves a2-a4) cites fewer than 200 people, it is likely that the edition was not much larger than that. [Click Below for Full Description]
