[Turmeau de la Morandiere, Denis Laurian].
1764. 8vo. 3 parts in one volume. (4), VII, (1), 223, (5), "220" [but: 200], (4) pp. With engraved vignette on title-page. (Includes as third part, with separate title-page): [Jean Baptiste Jacques Elie de Beaumont], Question sur la légitimité du mariage des protestans françois, célébre hors du Royaume. 105, (1) pp., final blank. Contemporary full calf, spine richly gilt with red label. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. First edition. A plea for the toleration of Protestantism in France - for humanitarian, but above all for economic reasons. Toleration towards Protestants would contribute to the growth of French population, and the author, an extreme populationist, considered the size of population as the chief source of wealth for the kingdom. The additional work, added as a final part, argues that marriages with Protestants concluded outside France are valid and protestants should be tolerated if population growth is desired. - A fine copy. [Verri, Pietro (ed.)].
Large 4to. 4 parts in 2 vols., bound in one. 288 pp. 287, (1) pp. Printed in double columns. Contemporary green half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped title to spine. Third collected edition of a principal journal of the Italian enlightenment, "The Coffeehouse", modelled on the English periodical "The Spectator". It was published by the "Società dei pugni" (Society of Fists), members of which included the Milanese brothers Pietro (1728-97) and Alessandro Verri (1741-1816), the philosopher Cesare Beccaria (1738-94) and the mathematician Paolo Frisi (1728-84). Covering a large range of subjects, the journal's emphasis was on economics and public policy. It did not enjoy a long life: the first issue appeared in June 1764 (at Brescia to avoid censorship), the last in May 1766. The first collected edition appeared as early as 1765-66 in Brescia, and a second one in Venice in 1766. In 1764, the year that "Dei delitti e delle pene" was published, Beccaria contributed to one of the first issues an article on the relationship between tariffs and smuggling ("Tentativo analitico su i contrabbandi", vol. 1, pp. 122f.). This essay has been recognized by various authors as an important early contribution to mathematical economics and is been treated at length by Reghinos Theocharis. Beccaria posed the problem of a smuggler desirous to compute the risks of his profession. He attempts to express in algebraic formulae the relations between the value of goods purchased by the smuggler, the value of goods left after part of the goods have been seized by customs, and the value of the c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig, Johann Wendler, 1764. 8vo. Non-uniformely bound. Vol 1: Totally uncut in the original cardboard-binding. Some wear to capitals and hinges. Internally a bit of minor occasional brownspotting. (18), 592 pp. Vol 2: 19th century marbled paper-binding with red gilt title-label to spine. Wear to extremities. Only light occasional brownspotting. (2), 435, (1). ¶ The very rare seminal first edition of Lambert's main philosophical work, the work which coined the term "phenomenology". "Neues Organon" is a work of breakthrough that came to, directly or indirectly, influence almost all later philosophy, also that of Kant.Johann Heinrich Lambert, is probably today remembered by most people as one of the greatest mathematicians and logicians of his time. However, a true polymath, he also played a dominant role in the development of 18th century philosophy, primarily with his philosophical magnum opus "Neues Organon", in which he set out to provide a better methodology for philosophy, with the aid of mathematics. As such, he is considered a path-breaker of Rationalism and one of the most important predecessors of Kant, who knew him well and admired him greatly; the two corresponded frequently. "Kant himself recognized Lambert as a philosopher of the highest qualities; and he expected much from his critical attitude. He had drafted a dedication of the "Critique of Pure Reason" to Lambert, but Lambert's untimely death prevented its inclusion.Lambert's place in the history of philosophy, however, should not be seen only in its relation to Kant. The genesis of his philosophical ideas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small octavo. . [4], iii, [1, blank], 144 pp. Copper engraved frontispiece and three additional copper engravings. Half morocco over marbled boards with gilt-lettered and gilt-ruled spine. Lesuire's original edition was published in 1760. James Pettit Andrews (1737-1797) was a British historian and translator. According to the preface, he "picked up the original by accident, as he was making a tour on the Continent: - he was struck with the humour of it, and took it into his head, that though, in the satire, the failings of Englishmen are exaggerated beyond all reason, yet it might, on the whole, be of some use to his countrymen, to know in what light they are seen by foreigners. It is only necessary to add, that very few liberties have been taken in the translation; the author of Les Sauvages of Europe was too … [Click Below for Full Description]

Krasheninnikov, Stepan Petrovic (1713-1755); Grieve, James.
Glocester: R. Raikes for Thomas Jeffrys, 1764. First English language edition. The first English edition of Krasheninnikov’s 1755 scientific description of Kamchatka, largely based on the notes of Georg Steller. Krasheninnikov abandoned the Great Northern Expedition to avoid becoming Steller’s assistant, but was able to make use of his notes for this first scientific account of Bering’s expedition to Alaska. Steller survived the shipwreck and scurvy that killed Bering and most of the crew, and continued to explore and document Kamchatka for several years, giving his name to a variety of newly discovered Arctic fauna and describing the native people of the region. . Quarto (27 cm); [8], vii, [8]-280, [8] pages, [8] leaves of plates (some folded) : illustrations, maps. Bound in full speckled calf outlined in gilt; red title label titled in gilt; spine in six compartments defined in gilt. Fore-edge stained red, faded. Joints and hinges reinforced, corner and edges renewed. Old commercial marks in pencil on front pastedown, along with old printed catalog entry. Old tears at corners of folding maps admirably repaired. Occasional paper blemishes; closed tear at S2; light even toning throughout. A very good copy! [Sugar Act]
London, 1764. [2],275-299pp. Dbd. Folio. Light tanning and some offsetting. Still very good. The scarce official Parliamentary printing for the "Grenville Budget" of 1764. This budget act contains the so-called "Sugar Act," which was the first deliberate and direct attempt to tax the American colonies in order to pay for the British military presence in North America. The Sugar Act levied a tax of three pence per gallon on the importation of foreign molasses (molasses from the British West Indies would be exempt from the tax). But the proposed legislation did far more than tax sugar products. It also detailed more foreign goods to be taxed, including certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric, and printed calico, and further, regulated the export of lumber and iron. The enforced tax on molasses caused the almost immediate decline in the rum industry in the colonies. The final part of the title of the Act was Grenville's response to the British Customs Board's estimate that the annual revenue from American customs was a paltry £1800. Grenville, whose guiding principles were strict adherence to legality and financial solvency, found this state of affairs to be intolerable. Existing trade regulations, designed to raise greater revenue, would be more rigidly enforced, with incentives offered to naval officers and customs officials. This Budget Act of 1764 set the tone for many of the British policies and measure that followed. A chain of events was set in motion which would lead step by step to the American Revolution. Reaction in the colonies was not long in coming … [Click Below for Full Description]

Goldsmiths, 10057. Higgs, 3089. Vanderblue collection of Smithiana, p. 41). Quelques petits accrocs à une coiffe et aux coins. Bayes, Thomas
London: L. Davis and C. Reymers, 1764. First edition. FIRST EDITION of Thomas Bayes's extremely influential work on the concept of "inverse probability", the basis of modern statistical inference.
. ''Bayes, a Nonconformist minister, published only two works during his lifetime: Divine Benefits (1731), a religious treatise; and Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions (1736), in which he responded to Bishop Berkeley's attack on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. For the latter work he was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1742. In 1763, two years after Bayes's death, Richard Price, a fellow Nonconformist minister, economist, and actuary to whom Bayes had bequeathed his papers, found Bayes's Essay and submitted it to the Royal Society for publication. The arguments in Bayes's paper were adopted by Laplace, who saw in them the basis for statistical inference; they were later challenged by George Boole in his Laws of Thought. "Bayes's Essay contains the first statement of Bayes's Theorem for calculating 'inverse probabilities', which forms the basis for methods of decision analysis, statistical learning machines, and Bayesian networks. Bayesian networks are complex diagrams that organise the body of knowledge in any given area by mapping out cause-and-effect relationships among key variables and encoding them with numbers that represent the extent to which one variable is likely to affect another. Programmed into computers, these systems can automatically generate optimal predictions or decisions even when key pieces of information are missing. Bayesian or … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEDERMÜLLER, M.F.
Nuremberg, Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, 1764-1768. 3 volumes. 4to (265 x 215mm). With 1 fine handcoloured allegorical frontispiece and 150 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Later half vellum. The rare French edition of probably the most beautifully illustrated work on microscopical research. Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769) settled down in Nuremberg in 1749, after having been wandering about for many years as a soldier and a secretary, and started his valuable microscopical observations under the protection and direction of the famous Dr. C.J. Trew. The publication of the results, with the finely engraved and coloured plates by the successful Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, met with close attention and interest, and for years to come the "Mikroskopieren" was a fashionable pastime for many of the well-to-do classes. The work describes and illustrates a wide range of objects: parts of plants and insects, small shells, plancton, the crystallization of salts in solution etc. The author was the first to use the term 'infusoria'. Our copy does not have the supplement of 23 pages and 2 plates "Response... à quelques obiections et doutes... par le Baron de Gleichen" a supplement which is lacking in most copies and not listed by Nissen.//A fine uncut copy.//Graesse IV, 139; Brunet III, 919: "Ouvrage très estimé"; Nissen BBI, 1156.
